They like the BACKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So............. I traveled to my DS & DDIL's for Christmas. Staying for 2 weeks.
Since I made a number of things for them that are Christmas related, they got presents ahead of time. One of the gifts was a tree skirt, made using the 9 degree wedge ruler, with 2 fabrics for each wedge. (I'll have to remember to take a photo for all of you) This takes time to make........... the PRECISE cutting, sewing....... you all know. So, while still at home I'm up burning midnight oil trying to get this last gift finished, and do. I proudly give it to them last night after we all finished trimming the Christmas tree and they just LOVE IT................. only, what they love is the BACK SIDE!!!! All I can do is smile and shrug my shoulders to myself. I explained that the "right" side is made up of 80 pieces of fabric, sewn together to equal 9 degree wedges and then sewn together to make a 360 degree circle. They "oohed and ahhed" over that explanation, said it was pretty and then put the skirt under the tree.......... backing up!!! Hahahahahahahahahaha. Incredible. Now I'm afraid to give them the spiral table topper, as they might like the solid backing on that too! |
Where are the pictures!!!!
Oh my , at least you picked a great backing fabric!!
Kids! Maybe they're just protecting the top side by keeping the tree from dropping needles all over it?
I also made a quilt for a friend where she loves the back more than the front! At least she loves some part of it!! LOL
I'd love to post a pic, but have tried several times and get a message that says my attempt has failed. So sorry.
Pic please??? J J
I made a patriotic wall hanging for friends and when I visited it was hung showing the back. She thought I had used leftover pieces to make the back-really the front. A decorative rod through the hanging sleeve didn't look to bad, luckily I had picked a very nice patriotic backing. I told her that was the back but if she liked it better to leave it that way. Once its given away you don't have control. :)

Be happy they are using it, many write that they get comments and the item never gets used. At least you know it was made with love and was accepted that way too.
Goes to show that one can't predict what others will like!
At least you are going with the flow and not throwing a hissy-fit :) over what they have "done" to you tree skirt ... and letting it spoil Christmas for all. Good luck with your spiral .... they may surprise you. And too, remember in years to come they may change and say OMG the back/front side is a beauty and reverse their usage. |
karen have you tried reducing your picture size (pixels)? here are a few online links to help you reduce your photos and save them to your computer to post on this thread. i hope this helps as i want to see that tree skirt also.

You never know what someone will like. Maybe the will turn it over next year for a new look.
Well, at least they like it. You'll have to tell us if your incredable spicy tablerunner ends up in the same position.:)
Just thinking out loud here ....... a lesson to all, to not make our backings so darned lovable! :)
Back to boring plain stuff! |
Reminds me of the vest I made my SIL several years ago. Used Christmas fabrics to make 5" crazy quilt blocks, fancy machine stitches with gold, red or green metallic threads on all the seam lines. It's lined to the edge with a Christmas print, and she wears it lining side out.
LOL, I guess just as long as she likes it it's OK. |
LOL is not just kids! I made a lovely set of Christmas placemats for each of my sisters one year. The oldest put hers on the table upside down...she thought they 'looked modern' that way.
Well, at least they liked one side! Reminds me of the last tablerunner I sold. I did a neat Christmas runner; the lady wanted the plain green back -- to see off her candlelabra sp?
Isn't it just the way?! The value or beauty we see isn't necessarily what anyone else sees. :-))

Thank you Havplenty for the links. I've had trouble posting pics. This should take care of those pesky details. |
I sometimes wonder, as I complicate a pattern beyond belief, why I tend to think that simple is less effective!? It also helps to be very sure of the recipient's tastes. But hey, they like it and that is why you made it so it is all good.
Maybe your quilting is so fantastic that they just love being able to see every detail of it. I usually love the backs of my hand quilted quilts the best, my machine one's, not so much. I'm sure they love it and appreciate all of your efforts no matter how they use it.
That was a GREAT story! I'm glad they loved the gifts though. :)
PICTURES!!!!!!! |
That's funny.
Sorry I had to laugh! It's like the commercial where the baby is playing with the box instead of the present. My dog loves her toys, but give her the lid off a spray can and she's in heaven.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Glad they liked it.
i have a vest similar to your description and i love it. i wear it just about every year.

So funny made me laugh. You just never know :-)
let's face it, WE love patchwork, but that does not mean EVERYONE loves patchwork. To each his own.
Kinda like getting your kids the gift they really really wanted when they were young, and they end up playing with the box :-). Don't worry, some day they will see the light, and flip the skirt over to the right side.
kindly explain to them, that they can cover it up with presents, but the top needs to be up! sigh
I think that is a cute story. It's funny what our recipients do when we give them one of our treasures.
I think they are preserving the top for future generations. It will be an heirloom, you know. Too funny. (Well, kind of sad too.) Hope you can continue to release it to be used as they desire. But I think one day, they will see the light and turn it the right way. Next time back it with muslin. :-)
As long as they love it both sides will eventually be appreciated (smile).
That is just too funny... I guess the old saying goes... different strokes for different folks... backing must be something special that catches them...
At least they like it!! :)

Something very similar happened to me. I made a beautiful (IMHO) Warm Wishes using "musical fabrics" and nice blenders. On the back where only he could enjoy were large appliques of silouettes of his own guitars and various "scraps" from the front of the quilt. Plus the size was a couch size for him to use in his large recliner. Well, I go to visit and where is the quilt? across the top of his queen size bed with the backing UP. Hilarious! I told him I know where his priorities lie. I explained to him that the label, which was a large eighth note with the information embroidered in white. He thought that should be on the front. Needless to say, he LOVES his quilt!

Here's another way to look at this. You've made them a reversible tree skirt! Who knows, maybe next year they'll use the "right" side. I often do this when making table runners and wall hangings, especially around the holidays so one side will be Christmas and the other winter-related. In the fall, one side is Fall and the other is Thanksgiving. Truthfully, I started doing this because I was too busy to make piece and quilt two projects so I combined them into one. Congratulations on your reversible tree skirt being used and loved! :-)
