Mom taught me embroidery (hucksack and iron on transfers on regular cotton), her mom taught needlepoint, showed me crochet but I learned that on my own later, neighbor taught me to knit. Never saw or knew anyone who quilt. Learned when I retired! I've taught my 7 yr old grandson and 9 year old granddaughter to knit and piece and longarm quilt, embroider on plastic mesh. The other 3 (ages 3,4,8) make stuffed toys (snakes are popular) with my sewing machine.

My aunt on my father's side did it all and my father did beautiful woodwork. I think I got it from them!!!

Definitely. My Grandmother never just sat. She always had something in her hands to work on, Piecework, croghet, tatting or just mending. Tje only thing I never saw her do was knit.
My Mother sewed ond embroidered, mostly but she and my Grsnd worked on quilts together.

My grandmother on my Mom's side did quilts (hand tied) and crochet. She died when I was 18 so never got to share the love of quilting with her. It still makes me sad. :(

I remember my DMIL being a part of a quilting bee. They met in the winter every Wednesday morning at what used to be an old country store. One or more of the husbands would always hang around to keep the wood stove going so the ladies would stay warm. :wink: :wink: :wink:

When I was really small Mom was an occasional knitter. Little sister and Mom got the flu for about a month and Mom taught Sis how to knit. Little sis fell in love and ran with it. The next thing we knew there were sweaters everywhere and all the rest of us took up knitting and I also learned crochet. Today Sis owns her own sheep, spins, dyes weaves and knits the most wonderful items.

When I was younger??? That's so far back, LOL

My maternal grandmother pieced and quilted. She lived to be about 2 months past her 100th birthday, and pieced quilts up until about 2 months before her death.

My Mama quilted quilts for many many years using a large frame hanging from the ceiling. I still have the quilting frame since Mama passed away almost 3 years ago.

My MIL pieced and quilted quilts. I have one that has very very small pieces. It is beautiful.

No quilts. I can only remember combing the wool from old quilts to have new quilts made by a group of sisters who kept the town warm in quilts.

I remember family members doing handwork -- embroidery and crochet. I began embroidery at 6 yrs old and crochet after I was married. Made ponchos for my girls and any other little girl who wanted one. Also made lots of shrinks. Remember those?

My Great Aunt used to make all sorts of things. She never made quilts though. One Aunt did for a while,but I don't remember ever seeing a finished one of hers. But books & museums I went to had quilts I thought were so very pretty! Always wanted to try it.

My Mom knit occ but with 6 children not so much.
