when you were younger, do you remember someone in your family making quilts or doing hand work?

DawnMarie 01-10-2011 09:27 AM

My Grandmother on Dad's side made and tied quilts.
My Great-Aunt, who had Cerebral Palsy, did all kinds of beautiful embroidery work.
My Mother cross-stitched.

QuiltingGrannie 01-10-2011 09:28 AM

My mother and I made a king size quilt together when I was 10. It's the only quilt I remember. My one grandmother crocheted everyone in the family "Granny Square' afghans.

I carried on the tradition of the afghans for a while.

Now my granddaughter has a Granny Square afghan I made her for Christmas '09 and a quilt I made her for Christmas '10!

raptureready 01-10-2011 09:30 AM

Mom and two of her sisters made beautiful quilts by hand---hand pieced, hand quilted, gorgeous!

My paternal grandmother made quilts on the machine--beautiful in their own way.

2 Doods 01-10-2011 09:35 AM

Nope!
Aunt, grandma, and mom made clothes (and doll clothes) but don't remember anyone ever knitting, quilting, or any handwork. Had to teach myself.

alissa 01-10-2011 09:36 AM

quiltsRfun 01-10-2011 09:43 AM

Until she lost her eyesight my grandmother always did hand work, mostly crochet but also some knitting.

Cuilteanna 01-10-2011 09:45 AM

No, but apparently my grandmother did knit and crochet. I just wasn't there to see! Not a quilter to be found anywhere in the extended family.

Deborah12687 01-10-2011 09:47 AM

My Mom, Aunts and Grandma would do quilting on a regular basis together. My Mom and my Grandma are deceased and my aunt does not quilt anymore. I tried to pass the quilting craft on to my daughter, daughter in law and Grandaugters but they lost interest in it.

Renee110 01-10-2011 09:50 AM

My grandmother was part of a quilting bee. That is what she called it. Several of them would sit and work on the same quilt.

akrogirl 01-10-2011 09:50 AM

My mother did some knitting, but I don't remember anyone but myself doing any sort of sewing, embroidery or cross-stitch work. We did a little sewing in both junior school and high school, but I am largely self-taught.

Jeanniejo 01-10-2011 09:51 AM

My mother made 2 quilts when I was older, I guess she had to wait until the nine of us were on our own to have any time to herself !!!My SIL sewed alot but not any quilting.

On my mother's side, my grandmother made quilts although I don't remember ever seeing her sew. My one aunt who had a serious hearing problem "trocheted". She used to make lace around handkerchiefs, and make those lace trimmed pillowcases with the lady with the petticoat trimmed in lace. I used to love to sit beside her and watch. I attribute my love of crocheting doilies to her. My other grandmother on my dad's side had a treadle sewing machine and evidently sewed at some time in her life, though I don't ever remember seeing her use it. I made a pair of baby doll pj's on it with stitching so close together that the fabric wore out long before the stitching ever did. And of course my mother made everything when I was little. She also knitted.

C.Cal Quilt Girl 01-10-2011 09:59 AM

Yep, Mom, Sister, Neighbor next door, 1 Grand, and Great Grand and a whole lot of Great Aunts on both sides, and a few cousins still do. Some Hand others Machine.

Borntohandquilt 01-10-2011 10:00 AM

My mother and grandmother knitted a lot, Mom also did crochet and different kinds of embroidery. I think Quilting wasn't known at all in Germany when I was young!

feline fanatic 01-10-2011 10:03 AM

As far as I know I am the only quilter in my extended family. I was never exposed to quilting as a child.

Magdalena 01-10-2011 10:03 AM

I grew up wearing the clothes my Mama made. She made pillows, tablerunners and etc. She was a cross-stitch expert in your young days. What I do remember is that she use to make quilt tops, I didn't know that is what it use to be called when I was young. Through the eyes of a child, she would attach it with a bed linen and a blanket, and sew it like a large pillow - her quilt piece on top, of course. Turn it inside out and then proceeded to stitch together. We never heard of the word quilting. It was called using scraps and making it to use. It took me so many years to understand what she was doing - Quilting.

Sadiemae 01-10-2011 10:26 AM

My Dear Mom made all of my clothes. Both of my Grandmas and my Mom embroidered and made doilies. I began embroidering and crocheting at a very young age. I really miss it.

charmpacksplus 01-10-2011 10:28 AM

My grandmother and my aunt made quilts but we didn't live close enough for them to teach me. My grandmother also crocheted and some of my other aunts did as well. When we visited it was usually a holiday and they had all that put away.

maryb119 01-10-2011 10:42 AM

My Grandma on mom's side made a crazy quilt and hand embroidered each block. She finished it in 1979 and left it to me because I was the only granddaughter who sews and would appreciate all the work she put in to it. She made most of my clothes and her own and loved to sew. My Grandma on my Dad's side was also a seamstress. She did hand work like embroidery and hand stitching. My mom is also an excellent seamstress. I grew up around sewing.

Central Ohio Quilter 01-10-2011 10:48 AM

My mom sewed clothes, but never did any quilting, knitting or anything like that.

Never knew either of my grandmothers, but there was always in our home a beautiful white, pink and green quilt that my great-grandmother made. I have always loved it and now I have it in my home. I think that was my inspiration to start quilting.

I learned quilting by doing - and reading directions from a Better Homes and Gardens magazine quilt pattern in the 70s.

ann clare 01-10-2011 12:09 PM

My grandmother and mother were great crafts people. Crafts included spinning, knitting, sewing/dressmaking, crochet, embroidery, rugmaking using hessian sacks. Old jumpers were ripped to get the yarn for the rugs.

Tulip 01-10-2011 12:36 PM

My mom and grams were both sewers. I remember in 8th grade Home Ec, the assignment was a quilt. That night Mom brought out the clothing scrap bag, we removed buttons for the button can, cut the shirts up into large pieces. Make a 5 inch template out of cardboard (recycled) and cut squares for a patchwork quilt. My mom had this quilt on her bed forever, now its earned retirement in the hope chest. It was so exciting shopping for a new sheet for the backing when I finished the top! What a precious memory Mom gave me...

kateyb 01-10-2011 01:07 PM

My mom taught me to embroider, her mother tatted, her sister knitted.
Mom's grandmother, aunt and cousin quilted. another aunt that crocheted. Her great uncle was a tailor.
My dad's aunt was a seamstress. She did beautiful beading on cloths. I don't know about the rest of his family.
Her cousin was the one who taught me to sew.
I can also knit, crochet (husband's grandmother taught me), weave. I still make cloths for myself and daughters.
My husband's step mom was in charge of a clothing factory. She started on the sewing floor.

minstrel 01-10-2011 01:10 PM

My mom made clothes, for us and for my dolls, did cross stitch and other embroidery, crochet and all manner of crafts. Never quilted, though.

tjradj 01-10-2011 01:23 PM

No one in my family quilted. But they did sew. My mom made most of my clothes and mended all of them. She raised and lowered hems with the best of them. I remember my Grandma sewing with her hand crank -- but most of it was mending.
My mom crocheted. My grandmother knitted. I learned all three. I also learned how to draft patterns from my mom - that skill has turned out to be valuable more than I can say. In my early adulthood, I took my knitting and crocheting basics and taught myself to do more intricate work. Mom also taught me tatting. Being around all this sure had its influence on making me a crafter in several different ways.
Quilting, well that I taught myself. But by knowing how to follow patterns from garment sewing, it was an easy learning curve. Now my Mom is my biggest fan of my quilting.

plainpat 01-10-2011 01:39 PM

Grma made tied quilts using gray wool blankets for batting on her Singer treadle machine..Talk about itchy LOL.

Not one of her 8 kids ever did any sewing or crafts.Neither do my DDs, so I'm a lonly only quilt top maker:-)

Juliebelle 01-10-2011 01:40 PM

My mother and MIL both sewed and my mom did the most beautiful crochet work.

leatheflea 01-10-2011 02:41 PM

Yep my grannie, she was always whipping up something. Quilts, barbie cloths, table runners, dollies, wedding dresses, you name it grannie made it.

Stitchnripper 01-10-2011 02:54 PM

No one made quilts. We never had any quilts. My mother knitted, did crewel embroidery and cross stitch. My aunt crocheted and sewed, and made most of my halloween costumes. My aunt has my grandmother's treadle from the 1920s but won't give it to me! I keep asking. She hasn't used it in years.

SherriB 01-10-2011 02:59 PM

My Mom sewed but never did any quilting until my first DD. She used pre-quitled panels and made quilts for her grands. My maternal grandmother quilted, but I don't have an memories of her quilting. She lived in VA, where my Mom grew up, and we only got to visit in the summer for a week. My paternal grandmother also quilted I don't remember her quilting either. I do remember a large wooden frame that hung from her living room ceiling.

My aunt made quilts as wedding gifts whenever anyone in the family got married. I also remember, as a kid, sleeping under a heavy (but very warm) quilt that was made out of old clothes. All sorts of clothes... some were rather scratchy as I recall, but none the less, I wish I had that quilt today.

sewTinker 01-10-2011 05:47 PM

My grandmothers made clothing - the older one (born 1888) on a treadle (which I inherited!). The older one also crocheted - but by the time I came along, she was only making doilies. Couldn't tell you if she ever made an afghan, but I don't think so. My younger grandma (born 1904) sewed for her three daughters, and was capable of recovering furniture.

My girlfriend taught me to crochet when I was 17 and we were hippies. That's what hippie girls did, you know. :-) So I've crocheted over the years. She went on to making purses and skirts; I, however, stuck with blankets and shawls.

Homespun 01-10-2011 06:06 PM

My grandmother made me clothing

rexie 01-10-2011 06:07 PM

My great aunt hand quilted from frames that hung from her ceiling by the fire. My grandmother quilted also by using all home made patterns and all of the old dress and shirts she could find.

My grandmother quilted back in the 20's-30's. She died at 81 when I was 6, I was her youngest grandchild. I remember sleeping under a patchwork quilt when staying over at her house. I loved to play "match game" with it, finding one fabric and trying to find the others that matched it. My mother just saw them as old bed coverings for poor people, even though we were not far from poor, and didn't care for them after grandma passed on. Mom knew how to sew, embroidery & crochet, but saw them as a chores back in the 50's. She didn't see that stuff as art, relaxing, fun and she didn't teach me. I had to learn from Home Economics in high school. God bless the Home Ec. teachers, the ones that are left, they don't teach that stuff in school anymore. I've done my part though and have taught my DD's and my Girl Scout troop, back when my girls were younger, basic sewing & needlework skills. :)

MadQuilter 01-10-2011 07:01 PM

My maternal grandmother was a milliner by trade and a crafter by choice. She apparently had the talent and drive. What she didn't have was patience to teach my mom. Unfortunately, my grandma died when I was only 2, but I KNOW that I inherited her love for fabric and craft.

Since my mom has an aversion, I just had to teach myself some crafty skills. However, my mom is an unbelievable word-smith. She is very creative with the rhyme.

Now my maternal grandfather was a blacksmith and a craftsman in his own right.

My paternal grandma quilted and crocheted but I wasn't close to her. My paternal grandfather was crafty in assorted media. My biological father used to be a painter and he is a master gardener.

Come to think of it, with all those creative genetics - how could I not be creative in some way?!

SnowysCreations 01-10-2011 07:13 PM

My grandmother used to make quilts and i would help her by basting the pieces of a yoyo quilt and making the little circles for her, i loved going through her fabric and her button boxes. When we went to visit her she would tuck us in and have so many quilts on the beds that once tucked in we coldn't move from the sheer weight of those quilts. LOL!
It always gave me comfort, feeling like i was wrapped up in her love.:)
I have one of the yoyo quilts that i helped her with, she was never able to finish it, she got very sick from breast cancer about that time and wouldn't seek treatment for it. I cherish that unfinished quilt and it will be passed down to my oldest granddaughter, hopefully with her help making some of the circles the cycle of life will continue and the love of quilting will be passed on to her and her grand children. That yoyo quilt is a wonderful reminder of the time my grandmother and i spent bonding by letting me help her and instilling the craft of quiltmaking into her oldest grand daughter as i am instilling into mine, so the circle of life continues.:)
