Lady Crafter 01-10-2011 07:28 PM

The only person close to a sewing machine that I can remember was my Mom. She sewed curtains, dishtowels, doll clothes, etc. Nothing too complicated, and definitely not a quilt. We DID, however, have TONS of feedsacks, as my parents owned a chicken farm. If I knew then what I know now ...... :D

My grandmother quilted, she also pegged jeans(in the James Dean days 50 cents a pair.) If she needed a pattern she would grab a newspsper hold it up to you and cut out a pattern. In her later years she would piece only and take the quilt to a quilter with what would have been a longarm. I remember the quilting was big loops. She made my first-born a baby quilt all stitches by hand, she was 80. The quilt is 43 years old.

My grandmother and my Great Aunt Thelma!!

Quiltforme 01-10-2011 07:42 PM

I am the only one who quilted. My mom made a blanket but never a quilt. My great grandmother died before I was born and she and her mother were quilters.

lclang 01-10-2011 07:43 PM

My mother sewed garments for the kids, crocheted, quilted, and knew how to tat, but I never saw her do it. She taught me to crochet and helped me with quilting after I was married, and I taught her to knit. We truly enjoyed showing each other what project we were working on. Our tastes in fabric were similar and once after a shopping trip I took a bag with some fabric in it and she told me that was hers. When we got to looking she had purchased a piece of the very same fabric and we had a good laugh over it. She has been gone for many years and I still miss being able to "show and tell" her what I have been doing. Now I am so lucky to have a daughter who does marvelous quilting and we get to share those things with each other.

Jaynie 01-10-2011 07:48 PM

My Nannie was a quilter. I learned alot from her: quilting, cooking, sewing, crocheting. She was the best. The only quilt I remember my Memaw making was a denim quilt from old blue jeans...but it was great too. I am so lucky to have had the influences from both my grandmothers: Nannie & Memaw. I am trying to pass on those same values & talents to my grandchildren.

Boscobd 01-10-2011 08:04 PM

I understand that both of my grandmothers quilted as well as my maternal grandmother's mother (one of my great-grandmothers). My Mom has a few quilts from her side of the family, but they are in really rough shape. My Mom sewed clothes and taught me how to sew, but she didn't quilt. I think I got the sewing gene from her and the quilting gene from my grandmothers!

lclang 01-10-2011 08:09 PM

Although my mom made quilts, clothing and all kinds of other good things, when I was not feeling well I would go to my grandfather's room and he would put me on his bed on top of an old horsehide cover backed with felt and then cover me up. When I woke up I would be soaked with sweat but I sure did enjoy his attention! He was one of the major influences in my life and we did some silly things together. I loved to sit on the wide arm of his old leather recliner with my arm around his neck and just veg out.

Blue's quilting mama 01-10-2011 08:13 PM

My Grandma on Dad's side made quilts and tied them...we would help her tie them, in the living room, stretched out on the frame.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-10-2011 09:19 PM

My Mom has always been a knitter. She's made beautiful things, including all my kids baby things that are stored away for them when they have their own someday :)
Mom wasn't much into sewing. I'm the only one who loves it :)

janedee 01-10-2011 10:20 PM

no one quilted in my family but my Mum was always sewing, her main thing was repairs on the priests garments they used for mass remember always used to love playing with the very luxurious fabrics that she used

SnowysCreations 01-11-2011 12:07 AM

My mom always made my clothes, all of my little dresses were quite unique, Grandma also croched as well as my mom and knitted, they did cross stitch and embroidery and i learned from them and make beadworking, jewelry for my family on special occasions. My mom and grandmother were very talented women, in many crafts including pencil drawing. I inherited all of these and have used them in my life. I am very grateful that they passed their gifts on to me. smilles:)

My Mom made clothes, household items, doll clothes and she did embroidery. She taught me both skills and I fell in love with embroidery. It is still one of my favorites, today.

Tippy 01-11-2011 02:12 AM

My father's grandmother wove rag rugs and taught me that skill when I was 9 .. she was 96 at the time. her daughter, my grandma, did hand piecing and quilting. My Aunt taught me to sew in 4-H and does upholstery. My grandmother on the other side just sewed her own clothes. My mom could do almost anything with textiles. She sewed our clothes till we were old enough to take over, crocheted a lot, embroidered when she had time. As we got older she got caught up in counted cross stitch and has made some phenomenal pictures and still crochets. And a lovely neighbor lady taught me the basics of tatting when I was in high school.

Aurora 01-11-2011 02:53 AM

My father's mother crocheted. My mother's mother (who still lived on the farm) crocheted, hooked rugs, quilted, gardened, canned, and raised chickens and cooked. My mother had five sisters -- they all crocheted, some quilted, most sewed. My mother did some sewing, some embroidery, and lots of reading. I think I got her mother's genes. I have done hooking (rugs), macrame, crocheting, embroidery, gardening since I was about eight, made all my clothing for about 20 years and learned to knit six years ago and am now adding quilting to my skills. So I have stashes of macrame cord, yarn, embroidery floss, garden seeds and tools, thread, patterns and fabric. It is important to deversify and be well stocked/prepared.

quiltgrammyt2 01-11-2011 03:41 AM

My Grandma on Mom's side made all of us grandkids a "quilt",they were two pieces of fabric with flannel for batting and she would stitch our names on them by machine and use the fancy stitches to go around the edge of the binding and she did all of the mending. She had these quilts at her house that were squares of wool in shades of grey and black tied with red yarn very warm and itchy(would love to have one now, because of the memories),I don't know who made them.
Grandma on Dad's side did embrodiery, but never while us grands were there(which was every week day,she was our "baby sitter").
After I was married Mom and aunts took up crocheting for awhile.

jeanneb52 01-11-2011 03:54 AM

MY mother and her family were, and are hopeless with their hands. My father's family shine...crochetters, knitters, tatters, clothes sewers but no quilters. I have a beautiful hand carved wooden box from my great great great grandmother who did wood carving. It was made to hold her daughter's crochet hooks. You can see the indentations of the hooks in the velvet lining. I also have some of her(the daugher) whalebone hooks, carved by her father on sea voyages As a crochetter, they are prized possesions. Maybe someday someone will treasusre my goodies....

My grandmother made quilts for living even before I was born. I have some of the quilts she made for my mom and uncles. There was a quilt show of her quilts that people still had back when I was a teen. I'm 62 now. I wonder how many are still around?

huntannette 01-11-2011 04:29 AM

my grandma made weaved blankets on her weaving loom...it took a whole room in her house...i remember helping her with it...she cut the fabric all by hand.....only used recycled clothes, blankets etc

thenonnielady 01-11-2011 04:40 AM

All four of my aunts crocheted, my grandmother tatted and croched, one aunt was a fabulous garment maker, my mother sewed, crocheted, they all embroidered. My sister and I did everything except tat.

Lyle 01-11-2011 05:16 AM

I remember my father's mother, my aunts, my mother quilting quilts to use. My grandfather's "chore" was to keep the needles threaded as they quilted them on a frame hanging from the ceiling. My oh my, many years ago.

Minnisewta 01-11-2011 05:25 AM

My Mom made a quilt and when the kids in the neighbor hood played dolls etc. we would all sit on the quilt. My Mom still has that quilt and it looks darn nice. My Mom also had 20 Dresden Plates that my Grandma made in the 30's. I had friend help me applique them and finished the quilt in 2008.

sidmona 01-11-2011 05:29 AM

No quilters in my background. Grandmother taught me to cross stitch, crochet and knit.

Carol J. 01-11-2011 05:44 AM

My mother came from a family of linen weavers in Germany so all the women on her side going back for generations sewed, knitted and crocheted. My great grandmother knit stockings in the dark so sell and my own mother sewed for people, knit crocheted and quilted so my sister and I did too.

No one in my family does handwork. My mother, at some time in her life made 1 quilt which my baby sister (age 48) has. Mother pieced in on her old singer treadle (which I have) and hand quilted it terribly. It was made from old clothes from us 7 kids. Today when some of my sisters and brothers look at it they can still identify what clothes the fabric came from! We laugh and remember when.....

No...but my mother wasn't crafty at all. I taught myself to knit, crochet, etc. I taught myself quilting too. Read LOTS of books! :D

Scakes 01-11-2011 05:55 AM

My mom quilted at 1 point because we had quilts. I'm the youngest of 4 and there was 13 &17 years between me & my brothers, 19 years between me & my sister.I do remember her making a string quilt when I was about 8 or so. I really liked the sewing machine and wanted to sew so she helped me cut squares of paper and I made my first string quilt. Made it for 1 of my dolls. She did a lot of sewing, crochet and embroidery as I was growing up but it wasn't until I was grown that she started quilting again. Her health was getting bad and she couldn't get out much. My dad even got into the act and helped her tie several quilts. I have a couple of their quilts and they are very special as both of my parents are gone now. My sister was an amazing seamstress but don't remember her quilting. Had an aunt who crocheted beautifully. Several woodworkers in the family but I don't know of many quilters.

jad1044 01-11-2011 05:55 AM

Grandma made quilts with mom's help when I was little -
She also crocheted and embroidered as did my mom, and mom also made afghans galore.
My aunt tatted.

Another aunt did painting by number pictures and did great work on them - looked like a real painter when it was finished.

A distant cousin does the calendars with the glitter, sequins and etc.

My Grandmother taught me to embroider when I was six. I know she crocheted doilies, but never taught me. Other than the embroidery, all my other "skills" were self taught: knit, crochet, sewing, cross stitch, quilting, naking cards, etc.

my grandmother made granny squares out of yarn. I believe knitting, but possibly crochet. My mother made all of our clothing.

My dad's family all were prolific knitters. Even the brothers learned to knit. My mother sewed alot of our clothes and also knitted. No quilters, though.

No one in my family quilted, but my MIL began quilting when she retired and for the next 20 years made beautiful quilts for all her family. She was my inspiration.

My mother was an avid knitter.

janiesews 01-11-2011 06:26 AM

All the time. My granny went to the landfill after the dress factory "dumped" their scraps and she made cobbler aprons and quilts from the pieces. My mom was always sewing or doing embroidery work. I started sewing in grade school. So glad to have had their influences and teaching.

Dortha 01-11-2011 06:36 AM

My mother..with nine children she had a lot of beds to supply with quilts. A great aunt worked for a drapery company and would send mother the 18 by 18 inch samples of drapery materials at each new seasonal change of patterns. They made heavy ,warm and surprisingly pretty quilts.

grannypat7925 01-11-2011 06:36 AM

My mother didn't do quilts but she did a lot of crochet and tatting. Grandmother hand pieced baby quilts for her church. Great grandmother did hooked rugs out of old clothes and comforters. We were started on handwork as soon as we were able to understand needle and thread. The little embroidery cards and then embroidery and on from there!

denise d 01-11-2011 06:46 AM

My gram taught me how to crochet. I remember the first thing she showed me was how to make Oreo cookie magnets. :)

We started an afghan almost 25 yrs ago. Thank goodness that we purchased all of the yarn at the same time.

Well, gram passed in 1998. I finally finished the afghan in 2003. :) The colors I liked as a kid definitely are not my favorite, but I will say the afghan is on my couch now and my kids love to snuggle up in it. It is super good for invoking great childhood memories!

No one in my family made quilts. My DH remembers, as a child, cutting feed sacks for his aunt to use in her quilts. Wish we had one of her quilts! My Mom crochet lovely doilies and I've thought of maybe using some in a quilt one day.

Joanieu 01-11-2011 07:07 AM

My Mom's mother made clothes and my Mom knitted and crocheted. Never even heard of quilts until I moved to Texas. and then of course I wanted to learn how for many years, and 5 years ago self taught myself - along with this board family. I have always crocheted and cross stitched - even taugh my Mom how to cross stitch 15 years ago, but she didn't like doing it.

mountain deb 01-11-2011 07:08 AM

My grandmother cut up old clothing and tied them together with older quilts inbetween. My DM crazy quilted for years. I cannot count how many she has made of those.
