I remember my mother doing alot of hand=sewing (she loved doing hems) and some embroidery. Don't remember anyone quilting. But my grandmother crocheted rag rugs. My cousins and I still laugh about grandma "hooking" whenever she came to see us! I would give anything to have some of those rugs now.

My step mother hand quilted and taught me how, I have several quilts done by her, and my kids have one apiece
|
I slept under a quilt made by my grandmother. She taught me to sew simple nine patches by hand, never got as far as making a quilt, but it was my first intro to the process.
|
My great-grandmother made all of her grandchilden and great grandchildren a quilt. My pride and joy is one made by my grandfather's mother who died before I was born. We have dated it about 1860. By great-grandmother was one of the reasons I started quilting.

My mother knit and crocheted and always had something going. Maternal grandmother always made mittens for the church fair, paternal grandmother sewed. She gave me my first cigar box full of squares, a needle and thread when I was about 7

I didn't know there was anything on a bed but quilts until I was in Junior High. That's all I ever and still have to sleep under. I remember sitting under a quilt on a frame threading my grandmother's needle's for her while she and her church group quilted. I have a Trip Around the World from her. My other gr mother died in 1937 when I was two, before she died she pieced a Diamond Field and a Double Wedding Ring for me, my mother finished it. I still use them off and on. My mother marked every quilt made in my Dad's family though the years. She & her sister passed a Grandmother's Flower Garden back and forth, 200 miles for 35 years, it's now on my bed. My mother made eight Rose of Sharon quilts and asked me to finished the 9th. I think I will start on that after I finish my grandson's quilt for high school graduation.
I have a photo book for both my mother and I with pictures of the quilts we have made. |
My maternal grandma taught me how to do embroidery and crochet. We tinkered in other things too!
My paternal grandma had made only a couple of quilts-but I did not discover it until after she died. But I did get the quilts, as I am only GD, and no one else was interested. |
My mom was always doing hand work of some kind - she made all my clothes as well as her's - she knitted - my grandmother made quilts & crocheted
|
I went with my grandma to her church quilting circle every Thursday. The ladies hand quilted on a big quilting frame and taught me how to make those tiny stitches. My great grandma taught me to tat, and all of my school dresses had cross stitching around the skirt. Lots of handwork in our family back in the day.
|
Mom's side my Grandma Made quilts all hand done , crochet everything from pillow cases to bed spreads. Grandma on Dads side hand pieced and quilted. crochet, embrodied, and tating. Both taught me a lot. It seems I keep learning with every project I do, if not something new, than a new way to do it.
|
One grandmother made quilts. The other grandmother crocheted and never needed a pattern. She was one of those lucky ones who could look at something and figure out how to do it. Various cousins learned to crochet but they didn't keep up with it like I did. My aunt on my Dad's side quilts, needlepoints, spins, weaves...etc...
|
grandmother on my Fathers side quilted all by hand. Her frame was 2 long poles resting on sawhorses. When she was using it they stoud up in the corner. She made one for all the grandchildren on their marriage. Wish I had not used it so much, but that's what she made it for.

Nobody in my family or any relatives ever quilted. That's probably why nobody realizes the amount of work that goes with it
|
No one in my family does any hand work. I'm the only one.
|
My paternal grandmother taught me crochet and embroidery.
Thanks to her I don't need a pattern book to crochet...just let me borrow a finished one. ;-) |
I had one aunt who made those beautiful big doilies and kept them startched and looking perfect. My mother could knit, crochet, quilt and did embroidery. I am the only other one in my generation with any interest in quilting. My mother was knitting the cutest afghan when I was pregnant....you should have seen the look on her face when I told her I'd just found out I was going to have twins! Yes, of course she made another one.
|
All of my aunts and my grandmothers and my momma did handwork, quilts, knitting,& crocheting. I come from a long line of seamstress and good cooks ...did you guys ever notice that most women who do things with their hand in the fabric and yarn world can cook so good ....lol

my aunt crochet - esp like the crochet slippers she made me every christmas. she is gone now and I still miss her and the slippers. my mom knitted, as did her sister. i remember once my mom made me a dress - i was in grade school (at that time all girls had to wear dresses/skirts to school. no jeans, no pants, no shorts - my kids are just appalled when I tell them this) anyway, i was so upset b/c i didn't want to wear a home made dress- let alone a dress- was a tom boy so it was a fight to even get me in skirts. needless to say it was the only dress she ever made me

Dress to learn, not to play. I also grew up in the age where it was dresses or skirts and blouses for girls and button shirts and pants for boys...all through to high school....and this was in Hawaii! Couldn't even wear the Muu muuu except on May Day. Times have cure changes. |
Mom taught me embroidery (hucksack and iron on transfers on regular cotton), her mom taught needlepoint, showed me crochet but I learned that on my own later, neighbor taught me to knit. Never saw or knew anyone who quilt. Learned when I retired! I've taught my 7 yr old grandson and 9 year old granddaughter to knit and piece and longarm quilt, embroider on plastic mesh. The other 3 (ages 3,4,8) make stuffed toys (snakes are popular) with my sewing machine.

My aunt on my father's side did it all and my father did beautiful woodwork. I think I got it from them!!!
|
Definitely. My Grandmother never just sat. She always had something in her hands to work on, Piecework, croghet, tatting or just mending. Tje only thing I never saw her do was knit.
My Mother sewed ond embroidered, mostly but she and my Grsnd worked on quilts together. |
My grandmother on my Mom's side did quilts (hand tied) and crochet. She died when I was 18 so never got to share the love of quilting with her. It still makes me sad. :(

When I was really small Mom was an occasional knitter. Little sister and Mom got the flu for about a month and Mom taught Sis how to knit. Little sis fell in love and ran with it. The next thing we knew there were sweaters everywhere and all the rest of us took up knitting and I also learned crochet. Today Sis owns her own sheep, spins, dyes weaves and knits the most wonderful items.

When I was younger??? That's so far back, LOL
My maternal grandmother pieced and quilted. She lived to be about 2 months past her 100th birthday, and pieced quilts up until about 2 months before her death. My Mama quilted quilts for many many years using a large frame hanging from the ceiling. I still have the quilting frame since Mama passed away almost 3 years ago. My MIL pieced and quilted quilts. I have one that has very very small pieces. It is beautiful. |

I remember family members doing handwork -- embroidery and crochet. I began embroidery at 6 yrs old and crochet after I was married. Made ponchos for my girls and any other little girl who wanted one. Also made lots of shrinks. Remember those? |
My Great Aunt used to make all sorts of things. She never made quilts though. One Aunt did for a while, but I don't remember ever seeing a finished one of hers. But books & museums I went to had quilts I thought were so very pretty! Always wanted to try it.

When I was little we would go over to Grandpa's house and he would let us kids have one and only one malt ball and watch him quilt. His hands would be all red and chapped but he would not quit. He would use any and I do mean any kind of material in his quilts. They were all squares and half squares. For the batting he would just use old blankets or whatever he had. He always tied his quilts he. He always used a ladder and a couple tables to lay them out. He put a sign out side that said Quilts for sale and he had people that were vacationing from Arizona, Texas, California and all over stop in for his quilts. My Grandma was deceased so that is what he did with his time. He had 18 children and not a one of them quilted. I am the only one on my Mothers side that took it up where Grandpa left off and I am truley blessed.

My mom's aunt was always crocheting. She made beautiful lace tablecloths which are treasured today. My mom knitted beautiful little coats and hats for my daughter and niece but sadly, I don't remember anyone ever making quilts. Another one of my mom's aunts was a seamstress in Hollywood, worked for Don Loper who made costumes for the movies. She sent my sister and me lace from one of Lana Turner's wedding gowns.
