My grandmother....but she quit when i was about 7? I still have 2 of her"s made when she was lots younger!

max's grandma 01-11-2011 07:16 AM

My Mother crocheted and made quilts, she would have the neighbors over to help quilt and I remembered playing with my dolls under the quilt frame.

ShirlinAZ 01-11-2011 07:33 AM

Nearly every woman and girl I knew did hand work. We all made our own clothes. All the women in my family quilted, crocheted, and embroidered. My second grade teacher taught me to tat, and a neighbor tried to teach me to knit. I never did get the knitting down. I still have a pillowcase and dresser cover I embroidered as a teenager, and my first tatting project, as well as an early quilt block. I still do all these. Crochet, tatting, and embroidery travel well.

My stepfather (who adapted me at age 5 and became my dad) was previously married and still did handyman jobs for his ex MIL. He would often take me with him and while he worked she taught me needlework. I think she was happy to have someone that took an interest and wanted to learn. Dad also inherited two scrappy bow tie quilts...I loved to examine all the different fabrics. I guess I was destined to be a quilter!

steelecg 01-11-2011 08:06 AM

Everyone on my mother's side sewed and my mother was wonderful at all types of crafts.

Parrothead 01-11-2011 08:32 AM

I was very lucky in the fact I grew up with both Grandmothers (they passed when I was grown) and two Great Grandmothers (they also passed when I was grown). One Great Grandma crocheted and the other tatted, did "cut work" and Huck Embroidery. I have things from both of them. One Grandmother crocheted with yarn. Grannie sewed, quilted a lot and crocheted with thread. She made tablecloths, runners, etc. and over 20 quilts. Her Mother quilted also. My Mother sewed, quilted and she was known for her knitted Christmas stockings. I started very young doing hand work and made my clothes starting at 10. I crochet (both yarn and thread), needle point, Swedish Weave, Huck Embroidery, quilt and sew. Like Grannie, I never just sit, always something in my hands.

catrancher 01-11-2011 08:42 AM

Oh yes. My maternal grandmother was never without some sort of hand work. She picked up a crochet hook and some crochet thread and just went to work. No pattern. She also did embroidery, needlepoint, and quilts. My other grandmother was a knitter, but she also made beautiful ceramics. My aunt was a quilter and a knitter. My mother was an excellent seamstress.

lynnie 01-11-2011 08:45 AM

all the neighbor ladies, always on the porches in the summer, mostly knitting and crocheting. BUT>>>>
aunt betty the lady next door would sew every morning, and i would go over and she taught me how to sew at 3 buy sewing buttons onto fabric.

themeemama 01-11-2011 09:24 AM

My maternal grandmother crocheted until she was well past 80. My paternal grandmother did the most beautiful cutwork embroidery. My aunt quilted by hand. Many of her quilts were also hand embroidered. I have sheet and pillowcase sets from the 40's that are such an important part of my life.

No one in our family did anything with quilting or crafting, I am the only one. I started as I remember in school elementary, I did a show with pupets I made and A box turned into a stage with curtains. I drew scence for different parts of france and the puppets talked about france, capital the effil tower . I made furntire I cover in fabric . From there as I got older I did craft shows, from wood to embroidery, to fabric. Now at the age of 63 I have decided to quilt and I have been doing it for a short time and really love it. As well as this site with great quilters to help me out.

my grandmother did all sorts of hand work, knitting, tatting, croheting.. did make a wedding ring quilt for my parents (never made one after that)

ewhughe1 01-11-2011 10:18 AM

My Mother did crochet, beautiful work, huge bedspread for a 4 poster bed, dolies, etc. She made almost everything she and I wore. I do all of that also, I can't seem to learn to tat. . . one of these days hopefully. I wish I had a neighbor that knew how.

Snappy 01-11-2011 10:19 AM

My grandma quilted and both my sister and I would help tie them. She made quilts for all her grandkids and then the great grandkids when they came along. My three children still have the quilts that great grandma made for them. Years later my mom started quilting and she made them quilts....and now I quilt and have made quilts for all my children and grandchildren as well some nieces and nephews. It is so addicting, I love it.

grandmacharlie 01-11-2011 10:30 AM

When I was a little girl I remember my Mammy (grandmother) quilting for people. She had sawhorses set up in her livingroom with the quilt rolled on long poles. That is when I became interested in quilting. She also taught me to embrodery(the old way by hand). My Aunt taught me to crochet. I love all kinds of hand work.

deema 01-11-2011 10:37 AM

My mom crochets. No quilting or sewing of any kind. My maternal grandmother did basic mending, but that's it.

Betty Lee 01-11-2011 10:46 AM

Yes, my Mother was a quilter. I was never interested in this while growing up, but now that Mom has passed away I have learned how to quilt. What a shame I didn't have this desire while she was still alive. She also did crochet, embroidery work. I remember her mixing sugar water to starch things she had made crocheting. She did try and teach me to crochet, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. Betty Lee

Not a famliy member but a lady I called Grandma Ballard she was my Grandma in all ways! I found out a few years agot that my olde cousin quilts and she wondered where we got it from too!

penski 01-11-2011 10:58 AM

the only one i can think of would be my gramma and i thik it was all done by hand , we only saw her once a year because she lived out of state but i remember she had quilts on her bed and had some sewing stuff laying around, but my mom was very good at sewing clothes , and my sister follows in her footsteps they could see a dress or something in a store and go home and make the same thing!!

IndyQuilter 01-11-2011 11:14 AM

Sadly, as I was growing up there was no one in my family that quilted or did other crafts. I knew I must have gotten my passion for quilting from somewhere so I asked my aunt and she told me that my great grandmother "Tiny" and her sister were avid quilters. That made me happy.

grannie-k 01-11-2011 11:29 AM

My maternal grandmother quilted by hand and taught me to crochet. My paternal grandmother tried to teach me to knit but I just could not get the hang of it. She also hand quilted. She was hand quilting till she passed away one day before her 101st birthday. I have some of the unfinished pieces I want to do something with. I have quilts made by both of them I treasure. Wrapping up in them feels like being hugged by them.

bevysue57 01-11-2011 11:33 AM

My grandmother on my mothe's side quilted many quilts, my mother also quilted, my grandmother on my father's side crocheted bedspreads and table clothes with crochet thread. My mother also knitted and crocheted, but I am the only one in the family who also spins yarn, weaves and quilts.

Deb G 01-11-2011 11:52 AM

I remember my dad's mother made quilts and for batting she had a big bag of wool that she carded(sp) before she put it in the quilt. It seemed to make it fluffier, I think.

Margie 01-11-2011 12:05 PM

My grandmother did tatting and hand embroidered. She taught me how to embroider, but I couldnt seem to learn tatting.

yes, my Mom & Granny, it's where I learned to love quilting. They both had a 2x2 wood frame that hung from the ceiling, just rolled it up at nite to put it out of the way.

Roberta 01-11-2011 01:26 PM

Mom knitted each of we three girls an afghan for Christmas. Not a real crafty family other then my niece and myself.

just_the_scraps_m'am 01-11-2011 01:27 PM

wow, thanks for sharing all your memories, i really enjoyed the stories. i am saddened that there has been so much wonderful handwork lost to posterity...but encouraged that many of you are passing your precious knowledge along...

amandasgramma 01-11-2011 01:28 PM

My grandmother was always sewing -- she was a home ec teacher.
Our neighbor was always crocheting doilies -- she taught me to crochet.
My first MIL quilted and crocheted!!! I was in heaven!!!! :) :)

Just Jane 01-11-2011 01:31 PM

We ALWAYS had quilts on our beds, made by grandmothers, great-aunts, etc. After I married, I tried all kinds of blankets on our bed, but nothing "felt right." Then, about 15 years ago, I came across a quilt at a Marshall's store and put it on our bed. WOW!!! I realized that was what was missing!

louisebuck 01-11-2011 01:39 PM

my mother did when i was younger i am the only one in my family that sew or quilt so all my kids depend on me for all of the quilting so they can stay warm in arkansas

My paternal grandmother hand pieced and quilted all of the time. She also made braided rugs for each grandchild (there were 27 of us)and crocheted. My mother sewed clothes and tatted. A little crocheting, but not as much.

decky 01-11-2011 01:51 PM

I remember my aunt sewing on her treadle sewing machine and my grandmother making rag rugs. I would help her tear the strips and thought that it was alot of fun.

gramofmany 01-11-2011 02:41 PM

I remember my Mother sewing out of necessity for our large family of mostly boys. Therefore she was always just patching jeans and elbows of their shirts. My sister was a wonderful seamstress and made me most of my clothes. An Aunt crocheted but no quilts at all. I got my love from a sister in law who quilts. I pray that one of my four daughters will have an interest some day.

Jeri M 01-11-2011 04:11 PM

My mother not only quilted, did embroidery, knitted and crocheted - she taught me everything too!

garysgal 01-11-2011 04:20 PM

My mom and grandma sewed and quilted ( not my mom tho) and my mom did embroidery and crochet and knitting. She taught my older sister and me to sew and crochet and do emboridery.

blanketangel 01-11-2011 04:33 PM

There were no quilters in my family. My mom did lots of sewing, knitting, embroidery and crocheting and taught these skills to both me and my sister. I am teaching my 8 year old granddaughter as much as I can. Lots of fond memories.

laurac 01-11-2011 04:38 PM
