I really want to try paper piecing, but am not sure how to get started. My goal is to make this into a Christmas wall hanging - http://www.reginagrewe.de/05gratismuster/gm0001_e.html but I am not sure how advanced it is. What's a good pattern to start with just to practice? I saw a youtube video on it once, and even after watching it a few times I still didn't quite understand the process... maybe there's a better resource out there? I have been avoiding it for a couple of years now and really just want to give it a shot! (Quilters Cache has so many cute patterns I want to try!)

It is a really cute pattern and I think it would be fairly simple. I would think you could find other tutorials on the subject. I looked at this lady's site and she does have some nice things...I love the kitten project she's starting!

I had the same problem, just couldn't seem to wrap my head around the concept of sewing on the wrong side of the paper with the fabric on the wrong side as well. :shock: I was like huh? You want me to do what? :shock:
I finally had a friend sit down with me and she had me sew a simple log cabin block with her instructing me. I felt so stupid afterwards because it turned out to be so simple.
My advice is to either have a quilting friend show you or stop by a quilting shop on their open sew time and ask for help. Just have everything with you and I'm sure they would be happy to help.

I think you just turned the light bulb on with your comment about the wrong side of the paper and the wrong side of the fabric! I think that's what was confusing me, I just didn't understand how it worked, but I never realized that little detail! Duh! I really think my kids have sucked every living brain cell out of my head! It's such a simple concept I guess, but I just couldn't wrap my brain around it... sheesh :roll:

Just make sure the wrong side of the fabric of the first piece is facing the paper and all pieces after that are facing right sides together to sew.
Did that make sense?

I think I understand it now!! Thank you! I don't know why it stumped me so bad, but it makes total sense now! The pattern I printed out even tells you what order to go in so I think it will be a good starter for me (Maybe they all do?? not sure)...

Looks like a fairly easy pattern. Like Amma said, just take it slow and easy. Just remember the #1 piece goes right side up and all the others go right side down.

Hmmm. I agree that this is an absolutely adorable little pattern, so I copied one for myself. She has a number of really great patterns on her website. HOWEVER, I'm not sure that I would recommend it for a beginner--just because of all the unusual signs and symbols. I'd make sure that I had the process "down pat" before I tried this one. IMHO. Whatever you do, I wish you Happy Pieceing!
