So soft and delicate looking. I love it the way it is. Very subtle color changes. Beautiful.
I love your "mistake". I have a friend who always does something not quite right on purpose cause Only G d doesn't make mistakes! Me, they just naturally happen. LOL

cutebuns 03-02-2010 06:19 PM

You made the same mistake on both pieces anyway. So they still match. I love the color. I think you did a great job laying out. I have an 8 foot ladder that I sometimes stand on to get up high enough. And I do stand on my cutting table all the time as well.

Esqmommy 03-02-2010 08:22 PM

I made that same mistake but ripped em apart. I did it on several of them.

cutebuns 03-02-2010 08:24 PM

It is a very easy to make, I have sat there for a while on some of them making sure that they are going on right, some are harder to tell if I have it right or not,

amma 03-02-2010 08:47 PM

Kyiav10, I love your blocks!!! They are gorgeous :D:D:D
I would never have noticed that block if you didn't point it out....

Sorry, my mistake. Retraced my steps from just now and found it here:

More expensive than thousands, but I've bought from them before and have been pleased.

Cheers m'dear! :-D

Kyiav10 03-03-2010 06:48 AM

Thank you all. Will start sewing the rows together today!

Kyia

bailey 03-03-2010 06:54 AM

Thank you amma.

omak 03-03-2010 10:30 AM

You all are doing so WONDERFULLY!
So inspiring to see the colors moving around like they do, and so amazing that you can look at the original fabric and NEVER figure out what the hexagons will look like or the quilt, either ...
gives a whole new meaning to the term "mystery", don't you think?
I am so happy for all the good results you have gotten.
Thank you, Miss Cutie ... you have made a difference in my life. <wave>

cutebuns 03-03-2010 11:33 AM

You have made a difference in mine as well Qmak, cheers!

Kyiav10 03-03-2010 02:49 PM

Started sewing them together today. Sew many seams!!!! Hard o sew through. But eventually they will be all together. Can't wait. Think I am going to do a dark purple inner border and then pink. Not sure yet.

Kyia

mimisharon 03-03-2010 03:35 PM

Can hardly wait to see it. I found it just as difficult to iron it. But so worth the effort!

cutebuns 03-03-2010 03:36 PM

The seams are small until you have to put the strips together, I can't wait to see *jumping up and down in excitement*

billswife99 03-03-2010 04:21 PM

I just got a call saying my Encore book, that I ordered last week, has not been shipped due to the fact that they want me to mail in my gift certificate first! Now why didn't they tell me this on the phone when I placed the order? So my quilt is still laid out on the living room floor. Hope we don't have company this week!

buffy2 03-03-2010 05:05 PM

Hi. Everyone's quilts are so, so , so, beautiful.I love all the colors. I have my strips half sewn and tonight I notice one piece in a block is wrong. Now I am debating if I should take it out or leave it. I will sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

Hi buffy - I've done this more than once, and left it! You really can't spot it in the finished quilt. Or you could make it a puzzle - challenge ppl to find it! :-D

Well here is mine. DH and DD did most of the arranging if the blocks in the end , they got the fun job, and I had to sew it all together LOL. I am still tossing up whether or not it needs another black border?????
I love these and will definately make another one, the only thing I didn't like is pressing the seams open, but I'm glad I did as it made sewing it all together so much easier.
Next question though is how do you quilt it?? I've only ever done SITD. All suggestions gratefully accepted.
We are going on holidays for 2 weeks so I will do that when I come back.
Thank you again Cutebuns, I will never look at fabric the same way again.
I love how everyone elses are turning out. They are fabulous! who would think that the fabrics chosen would turn into such spectacular quilts.

Woody, I agree, everyone's is coming out so beautifully! I will also do more. Maybe I will keep some cut by my computer along with the 1.5" blocks for leaders and enders.

Kyia

k3n 03-04-2010 03:13 AM

Woody that's beautiful! If it was me, I would add a further black border to give more of a frame. You asked about quilting, I always do just a wide meander over mine - anything more intricate IMO isn't really worth it as it doesn't show and you don't want to detract from that beautiful pattern. You did an awesome job with the cubes too BTW!

cheryl222 03-04-2010 05:33 AM

Gorgeous! I also thing another black border would enhance and frame it beautifully.

bailey 03-04-2010 05:47 AM

Woody, your quilt is beautiful. Can't wait to see your next one! They are very addictive aren't they?

Esqmommy 03-04-2010 06:19 AM

Woody, your quilt is just fabulous!! Wow! Love the colors and the tumbling blocks.

Quilter7x 03-04-2010 06:24 AM

Wow Woody, your quilt is awesome! Absolutely beautiful!

I really need some help with this one, I'm not loving it at all. I am planning to use black in the borders but I think it needs some in the mix to break it up a bit. I have the Encore book on the way, maybe some of those cubes will help. I liked somebody's idea of adding a diagonal slash. What do you think CB? Can this one be saved? :|

My thoughts would be to perhaps put a narrow purple border with a narrow yellow- orange border to border the blocks and then either a brown or black wider border on the outer edge or purple cubes somewhere in the hexes? I like the idea of pulling some of those colors out to the edge of the quilt, it helps make your eyes move around the whole quilt.

Woody, that is so gorgeous ALMOST makes me want to take mine apart and start over. But I definitely agree I'll never look at fabric prints in quite the same way.

Thank you so much, Cute!

Getting ahead of myself. Wish I could work as fast as I get ideas. LOL
Thank you so much CB - don't think I would have tried this without all your great intructions and patience with all the questions.

I like to put some of the original fabric in the border. Especially when the hexes look sooo diferent than the original fabric, like your lions and zebras do. I also like the look of the cubes in a contrasting color to the black and white hexes. You might also try cubes in black, gray and white, if you like a less contrasty appearance. If you end up with using a contrasting color for some cubes, perhaps you could pull that color out to the edge with a narrow border of that as well. Just some of my thoughts.

fireworkslover 03-04-2010 07:07 AM

Woody,
I also think another black border would really frame this quilt. I'd make it the width of your pieced hexagon. Machine quilt it in a wide meander, because the stitching won't really show much with all the pattern from the fabric. I've quilted all mine from the back, so I could see where I was going.

fireworkslover 03-04-2010 07:13 AM

This has been so much fun, to follow along with everyone, as well as inspirational for future quilts using this OBW method. It really makes me want to start cutting up and sewing some of the 10 or so fabric prints I've bought and are waiting for me to tackle. I'm in the middle of my fireworks challenge quilt for '10 right now and need to finish that before I start anything else though.

billswife99 03-04-2010 08:29 AM

Woody that is a great name for your quilt! I would add more black to the border too. So how tedious were those cubes?

omak 03-04-2010 08:48 AM

I HAVE to ask <g> what is the fireworks challenge quilt? (on the board so I can watch y'all produce?) <wave>

amma 03-04-2010 09:03 AM

WOW!!! Woody :D:D:D That is spectacular :D:D:D
How fun, you turned this quilt into a family affair!!!

I was looking, and thought it might be fun to SID around the cubes and a few other blocks and make them stand out more... maybe put an extra layer of batting behind those... then a loose meandering around the rest of the quilt.

k3n 03-04-2010 09:32 AM

Yes, definitely SID round the cubes and amma, the extra batting is a great idea! Thank you!!!

My family belongs to an international fireworks organization called Pyrotechnics Guild International. There is a convention every August for a week, usually in the middle or eastern U.S.A. Part of Convention is an Art Show open to all members to display any Art they've made that has something to do with fireworks. There's lots of photographs, some sculpture and kids enter things they've made too. Anyway, back in '05 a couple quilter's got together and said, "In an organization this big (2000+ members), there have to be more quilters than us. Let's do a challenge and see how many participate. We can enter the quilts in the Art Show next year too." That started it all and we are now on year 5. Everyone gets 2 fat quarters of fabric, we pick together as a group the previous year. We go on a road trip and visit quilt shops in the towns in the area where the convention is. No limits as to size or numbers of fabric used, just that your quilt has to have a fireworks theme and you have to use "some" of each of the 2 fabrics. Sorry, only PGI members can enter a quilt. So far the numbers of quilts entered in the Show have slowly been increasing from 7 the first year to 15 last year. I've won first, second, honorary mention and Best of Show (the same year as I got first place). I can get some pics on here too.

buffy2 03-04-2010 05:25 PM

Woody your quilt is beautiful. I love the way you can see each block. A great job. Isn't this fun. We are all far away from each other but we can quilt together.I feel like I am quilting with a bunch of friends. Many thanks to CB. I hope she has something else plan for us in the fall.
Ada

woody 03-04-2010 11:04 PM

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

You are right, it does need another black border, and I love your idea Amma of SITD around the cubes and meandering the rest ( I had better put in some practice LOL).

The cubes weren't too bad Jenell, once I worked out how to enlarge them (the first cube took me 2 hours), next time I am going to do a quilt with cubes I will stick to the size in the book, it would be much easier LOL.

I hope everyone gets time to finish theirs while I am away so I can see all the beautiful quilts when I get back, I would be happy with any one of them so feel free to send them my way if you don't like yours

I agree. It was fun all of us working on a project together. I think it would be fun to do another one in a few months! After we have time to wrap the OBW's up.

I love using extra batting to make certains elements pop out... I think the cubes in all of these quilts deserve to stand out :D:D:D
And it is also a good way to use up your scrap pieces of batting
I think on these, I would pin/spray baste the extra batting behind the blocks before sandwiching and then SID around them to hold the batting in place, and then trim away the excess batting. Then sandwich the quilt like you normally would, SID around them again. JMHO

k3n 03-05-2010 01:00 AM

amma - your humble opinion has never let me down yet! Thank you, I'll definitely try this.

salmonsweet 03-05-2010 01:11 AM

Mmmm, so beautiful woody! I'm running out of words to do justice to all the beauties you all are showing on this thread!

I really like the look of your blocks, symmetrical fabric makes a difference again, to my eyes this also makes the cubes work so well. I love amma's idea of extra batting behind the cubes to make them stand out.
