I'm in the middle of my fireworks challenge quilt for '10 right now and need to finish that before I start anything else though.

I HAVE to ask <g> what is the fireworks challenge quilt? (on the board so I can watch y'all produce?) <wave>

My family belongs to an international fireworks organization called Pyrotechnics Guild International. There is a convention every August for a week, usually in the middle or eastern U.S.A. Part of Convention is an Art Show open to all members to display any Art they've made that has something to do with fireworks. There's lots of photographs, some sculpture and kids enter things they've made too. Anyway, back in '05 a couple quilter's got together and said, "In an organization this big (2000+ members), there have to be more quilters than us. Let's do a challenge and see how many participate. We can enter the quilts in the Art Show next year too." That started it all and we are now on year 5. Everyone gets 2 fat quarters of fabric, we pick together as a group the previous year. We go on a road trip and visit quilt shops in the towns in the area where the convention is. No limits as to size or numbers of fabric used, just that your quilt has to have a fireworks theme and you have to use "some" of each of the 2 fabrics. Sorry, only PGI members can enter a quilt. So far the numbers of quilts entered in the Show have slowly been increasing from 7 the first year to 15 last year. I've won first, second, honorary mention and Best of Show (the same year as I got first place). I can get some pics on here too.

Congratulations, and sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck for this year's event! <wave>

I agree. It was fun all of us working on a project together. I think it would be fun to do another one in a few months! After we have time to wrap the OBW's up.

Kyia

I already have fabric for 3 more and am working on another!

amma 03-05-2010 11:29 AM

This IS an addictive pattern :D:D:D If only my list of more pressing projects weren't so long  I would be working on these full time :lol::lol:

so I am done with my top, all I have to do it quilt it etc. I will probably bind it with the original fabric which will be a first for me, something a little different, then I will have to decide what to do with it, I don't really have a plan yet for it,

Janstar 03-06-2010 10:13 PM

Really pretty Cute! Cute avatar too!! Is that you?

cutebuns 03-06-2010 10:15 PM

yes it is me, I decided that I wanted to look younger, do you think that I over did it a bit, I am pretty sure that it is grade one,

CAROLJ 03-06-2010 10:29 PM

CB, you are adorable! Quilt is also sweet. I think the "former" fabric would look good as the border.

Janstar 03-06-2010 10:52 PM

I think the pic is adorable and you got a younger look alright!! LOL!!

salmonsweet 03-07-2010 04:48 AM

Lovely picture, Cutebuns!! :D You already looked like someone with a gift for forging her own way, and then showing others it with confidence. If that makes sense. Just such a beautiful strength in your loveliness.

And nice idea with the orange border around your quilt! I'd never have thought of it. If you feel like posting a closer-up of the border I'd like to see it. I like adventures. :-) I think can really imagine it with a self-binding of your center fabric.

Catching up... sort of...

Finally done with sewing my cheetah hexagons together. 255 blocks took a loong time... I'll trim the edges straight once I'm ready to put border(s) on.

Wondering about borders now. I kind of like the look of it on the off-white sofa, so perhaps some off-white? And a dark brown binding? or something else entirely? I'd love any suggestions from you folks, this is such a great creative cauldron!
I don't need it be much larger than it is now, but am perfectly willing to play if I love an idea that requires wide border(s). I have no specific plans for this quilt, it might go on my sofa, bed, or just be following me around the house...  :D

fireworkslover 03-07-2010 05:39 AM

Salmonsweet - Oh, Oh, Oh, just awesome! You should be proud of your stunner! Congrats.

mimisharon 03-07-2010 05:48 AM

That is wonderful! Salmonsweet you had the right fabric!

Janstar 03-07-2010 07:59 AM

Beautiful creation Salmonsweet! It does take a long time to sew them together but it's worth it.

athenagwis 03-07-2010 08:04 AM

I LOVE it on the off white, it really makes it pop. I'd say your idea of off white borders with dark brown binding is great!!! Love the print too. Great job!!

Cheers!

Oh My Gosh .... LOL I didn't even know this was you!! :) :) :) I didn't really look at the name, and when I saw you post the quilt I was like "Wow someone did the same fabric as Cute" .... I was even going to comment as such. Just goes to show you how much we associate the avatars with the people on here!! :) :) :)

Great looking quilt BTW!!

Cheers!

k3n 03-07-2010 10:11 AM

salmon that is beautiful! I agree with the dark brown, cream combo but how about doing a skinny 1/4" border of dark brown then the wider cream then bind in the brown? I love those skinny borders, I think they really make the quilt go POP!!

bailey 03-07-2010 02:43 PM

salmonsweet your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. I love the colors. Great fabric pick!

amma 03-07-2010 03:33 PM

Cutebuns, I love your quilt top!!! Good Job  :D:D:D
I really like the border you chose and can't wait to see what you decide on quilting :D:D:D

WOW!!! that is a LOT of blocks  Your top is beautiful:D:D:D
I agree with k3n's suggestion, I think it will be a stunning accent to your quilt. Have you thought about the quilting yet?

BellaBoo 03-07-2010 04:13 PM

This is without a doubt the most fascinating and informative thread on this board. I have learned more from the posts then any quilt book or class. The posters on this board are just plain awesome.

bailey 03-07-2010 04:27 PM

Cutebuns - just went back and found your quilt. I love it. Oh, also really like you as a blonde but how did you grow your hair so quickly?

Kyiav10 03-07-2010 11:04 PM

Cutie and salmonsweet! I love the tops! I have the top two rows and the bottom two rows done on mine. How in the heck did you get them all done so fast??

Salmon, I like the off white too! Your top is so big I am  with envy.

obie2 03-08-2010 04:00 AM

CB it's that winning smile in your new picture that grabbed me. Of course, your quilt is a winner too.

salmonsweet, 255 blocks, WOW .. beautiful quilt.

Esqmommy 03-08-2010 06:37 AM

Oh my, some amazingly fabulous new additions to this project! I can't get over how different they turn out from the original fabric. Wonderful work ladies!

salmonsweet 03-08-2010 12:11 PM

Thank you, really really really thank you, ladies. You are saving me. Again. :-D

I just spent a day muttering to myself "brown and boring, brown and boring". Nasty anti-creativity voice! Do we all get this??? I'm so glad a lot of you like my quilt top. I read what you wrote and now I can look at it with different eyes again. Yes it's brown, and I sort of like it again.

k3n, love your idea of the extra skinny dark border. Thank you for that.

Amma, quilting???? Sore point, heh. If I quilt this soon it's going to have to be big scraggly meanders on the centre and small scraggly ones around. :-) I'm only just beginning to practice MQ and I'm NOT handquilting this one. NOT. No way. (Except, if I decide to SID around that skinny border I may, I can do that bit more accurately by hand and it doesn't take too long...) So I may just leave the quilting for a little while until I have a bit more MQ practice under my belt!

Of course I hugely look forward to seeing other people's borders and quilting ideas, I'm sure I'll learn much!!!

Jingle 03-08-2010 01:49 PM

Absolutely Gorgeous !!! I really like it just they way you have it. If it were me I would finish it up just lkie it is.

cutebuns 03-08-2010 01:51 PM

Salmonsweet. It could never be boring. I have a friend that would love it. In fact one of my sisters would probably adopt it on the spot. It is brown but there is so much more than that to it.

obie2 03-08-2010 01:53 PM

mimisharon, it's a stunner.

It is brown, but against your couch, it brings out so many of the light spots and really brightens it up :D:D:D Adding a lighter border will intensify that too  I think it is a keeper

mimisharon 03-08-2010 02:03 PM

Thanks, y'all, think I will finish it up just as it is. I see now where I could done things a little different but I'm overall pleased with it. I have four in front of it and since I'm still thinking on the 'how to quilt' angle that's probably a good thing.

Salmonsweet, you really need to focus on the light aspects. To me they beg for the off white and a little brown on the edge to give it depth. It's just stunning.

Hugs
