Billswife--There is really only one way to save that quilt ..... send it to me!!

I love it as is and think it would look really sharp with a black border. I might play with it a little more to move more lights to the middle, but I personally wouldn't add cubes. But we all have our own personal preference!!

Cheers!
Rachel

Jenell, I think it's gorgeous. I like bright and cheery, your binding border could be a bit of the purple and then the black, or all black will bring out a lot of the orange and reds. I think it's beautiful and would love it on my sofa...just a thought.

Hugs

I think I would want the lights in the center with darker ones around them. Just my opinion. Beautiful fabric and the colors are great.

deranged_damsel 03-02-2010 05:56 AM

Bills wife, I like it! it feels like fall already looking at that top :D
I thought green initialy, it would soften a purple or black border. :D

Esqmommy 03-02-2010 06:28 AM

I love that orange OBW!! I think it's coming along fantastically! I love the idea of a dark border. I'd stare at the photo and move some blocks around. It's easier to do when you are looking at a photo than the real life one, at least it was for me!

Quilter7x 03-02-2010 06:54 AM

Taking a picture with a digital camera and looking at it on the camera's screen is a a really good way to see how it will turn out.

STAR 03-02-2010 08:08 AM

Ok I just had to go back through 10 pages!! and I just love all the pictures, you ladies are doing and did a great job. I just started sewing on sunday  I am really liking how they are looking. I still have to cut more fabric yet but am already looking for the next fabric!!

amma 03-02-2010 08:19 AM

Ooooo that is gorgeous!!! I love the "fire from within" look :D:D:D Such a vibrant and warm look :D:D:D
All of the suggestions are awesome...I lean towards the cube blocks and some of the hexs spilling into the border...:D:D:D
I can't wait to see what you decide to do!!!

Don't know if you all remember my first attempt and hated the result. Well, I kept it on the wall for a couple of weeks, moved blocks around and still did not like it. Figured life is too short to play with something you are not enjoying so...........cut out another and I love it. What do you guys think? I still need to play around with some of the blocks but this one is fun. It will be for my son for his birthday. Thanks for looking,

CAROLJ 03-02-2010 09:08 AM

I like the way the cubes draw your eyes around the quilt!

amma 03-02-2010 09:12 AM

Wow!!! I love it!!! Your son will too!!! :D:D:D
You really have a great variation in your blocks...I love the cubed hexs...they are an awesome touch :D:D:D

k3n 03-02-2010 09:25 AM

I love it too! The cubes in colour while the rest is monochromatic is something I'd never have thought of doing but it really works! Great job!

STAR 03-02-2010 09:40 AM

beautiful!! glad that you are having fun with this one

Thank you, I am having fun with this one. Here is the original fabric - who would have thought? I have enough left to use some for the back of the quilt and maybe even a narrow border in between two wider black borders. Well, first I guess I need to sew these blocks together. Getting ahead of myself. Wish I could work as fast as I get ideas. LOL
Thank you so much CB - don't think I would have tried this without all your great intructions and patience with all the questions.

k3n 03-02-2010 09:58 AM

Wow Bailey! Who would have thought? but I went back for a look at your layout and now I see the tiger stripes and leopard spots! Would you mind sharing the name of that fabric?

salmonsweet 03-02-2010 09:59 AM

Wow! Glad you are having fun with the new one baileys!! It looks amazing.

STAR 03-02-2010 10:00 AM

That fabric is so amazing! I would have been scared to cut it at all!! but your obw is just gorgeous!

and yes please give us the name of that fabric

billswife99 03-02-2010 10:14 AM

Oh I wish I had done a black & white too! That is going to be beautiful!

Thanks for all the ideas ladies, as soon as my book gets here I will get started again. I like all the fire words! I will have to use that in the name if I can. I can't wait to get this one done so I can get back to mine. It's soft purple and green and I doing it with the octagons.

bailey 03-02-2010 10:15 AM

Thank you all very much for your comments. The name of the fabric is "lion eyes" Alexander Henry Fabrics Collection. When I purchased it they also had it in a brown/gold colorway - it was just as nice.

bailey 03-02-2010 10:26 AM

billswife I love your "hot" quilt. I agree with the other posters that purple would look awesome added for accent.

I think I love all the ones that have been posted. All so different and sooooo pretty. Didn't we have fun?

Thanks again CB.

k3n 03-02-2010 10:31 AM

Thanks Bailey - off to google and see if I can find it in the UK!

I think I may just have seen it on thousandsofbolts.com.

k3n 03-02-2010 10:46 AM

Sorry, my mistake. Retraced my steps from just now and found it here:

More expensive than thousands, but I've bought from them before and have been pleased.

mimisharon 03-02-2010 11:07 AM

Bailey, that's just stunning. I really really like it!

Susy 03-02-2010 11:50 AM

Every one of you are doing such a fantastic job, I impatiently wait for each new picture! Maybe I should get off the computer and work on one, too!

bailey 03-02-2010 12:13 PM

Susy you will have so much fun doing one of these but I know what you mean by impatiently waiting for pictures. I check everyday - several times!!

Where are you in BC? I am in the Okanagan.

bailey 03-02-2010 12:45 PM

OK - now I need some help please. Re-arranged to my liking and wanting to start sewing my blocks together but cannot figure out what size of triangles to use to fill the sides. I cut 3 3/4 inch triangles. Hope someone can do the math - I am stuck.

Thanks,

deranged_damsel 03-02-2010 01:06 PM

Bailey, I LOVE the animal print!!!

page 14 and 15 cutebuns showed how to measure for fill in triangles

Susy 03-02-2010 02:24 PM

We must be close, I am in the Shuswap ( Salmon Arm)

cutebuns 03-02-2010 03:16 PM

I have yet to finish mine yet, I want to work on it some more but other things have come up, tomorrow is a new day, I am liking all what I am seeing though, it is really exciting to watch. it has been fun, and you all have not been near as bad as you think that you have, remember I have teens in the house.

I have been through both places in BC, my parents live in the lower mainland.

bailey 03-02-2010 03:55 PM

OK, I know this is probably a really dumb question but I am really confused. I see that I can fill in the top and bottom with 1/2 blocks to get a straight edge. On the long sides I want a straight edge as well so do I just cut off some of the block? That is a scary thought! Hope someone can tell this challenged person how to do this.
Susy I am in Kelowna so we are pretty close - CB I used to live in Calgary so I was close by for many years.

Thanks,

cutebuns 03-02-2010 03:59 PM

Unfortunately if you want a straight edge on the other edged you have to cut off the points, It isn't as painful as I thought, I didn't on this one but depending on how much time I have I have cut them off, they are only little pieces, and I imagine if you have saved all of your scraps I imagine that they are a lot less that you usually have, at least that is my experience with it,

So line up your ruler to the inside points and cut away.

CAROLJ 03-02-2010 04:00 PM

I've seen it done both ways, filled in and cut off. Either looked good.

cutebuns 03-02-2010 04:00 PM

I am close to 4 hours north of there now, I did live right in Edmonton for more than 10 years, we have only been out in the boonies for 2 1/2 years and I like it so much better, I did spend my teen years in the lower mainland, it was a lot different than Ont.

bailey 03-02-2010 04:50 PM

Thanks for the info CB - now I can start sewing. BTW I will always be an Alberta girl. Miss everything but the cold.

Off to sew now.

Esqmommy 03-02-2010 04:52 PM

I cut mine down. Didn't hurt a bit. In fact, looked really nice.

No I did not stand on the pool table to take those, hehe. I stood on a stool since you guys said it is better to get a straight on shot. And here is a secret. I noticed to day that I put on a triangle worng and decided to leave it. Here are pics.

I would not have found that if you hadn't pointed it out! It can become your "mistake on purpose".

It looks beautiful!
