Is this too dark?

2 Attachment(s)
I just completed my first official tshirt quilt top for my neice. Now I get that these are just tshirts and they won't be "pretty", but I am wondering if this is too dark. What do you guys think? I bought some batik for the narrow 1" inside border, but it doesn't show up like I had pictured. What do you think - should I take the borders off or just leave it as it is? I love it! Nicely done!!!

IQ2 07-27-2015 06:01 AM

This weekend I had a similar situation. I made a mini quilt that I color coordinated to a dark batik. I hated the way the batik looked, but I had committed myself to not purchasing any fabrics for this project. Suddenly I added a bright blue binding and it pulled out all of the light colors in the batik instead of the darks. Maybe instead of the blackish border you can add something bright like the blue in the bottom center. Great job, by the way. I love the quilt! :)

It looks perfect to me! The darker background is a nice setting to show off the bright t shirts. A lighter background would just make it look washed out.

tessagin 07-27-2015 06:08 AM

I really like it as is.

Homespun 07-27-2015 06:15 AM

Looks great from here! I agree with IQ2. Audition some binding colors.

Nanax4 07-27-2015 06:19 AM

I like it as it. Right now my eye is drawn to the t-shirts, just where it should go! I love the little 1" border. It adds some color without taking away from the t-shirts. JMO.

JustAbitCrazy 07-27-2015 06:31 AM

The borders do not detract from the T-shirts. I say I like it as is. The batik gives a little color, and the black mottled goes with the shadows, which, by the way, are a great way to set the T-shirt blocks. Well done!

bjchad 07-27-2015 06:38 AM

It looks very good!

OhCanada 07-27-2015 06:46 AM

I also think it is nice as is, love how you shadowed the t-shirt blocks, gives some dimension to the quilt.

ManiacQuilter2 07-27-2015 06:49 AM

I might have used a brighter batik in the border. Bright quilts are so cheerful.

Jeanne S 07-27-2015 07:05 AM

I think it is great, one of the best T-shirt quilts I have seen! The batik adds a nice subtle variation of color to the solids, not too dark to me.

calla 07-27-2015 07:08 AM

Like the way they float

sash 07-27-2015 07:22 AM

Like it the way it is. Good job.

I totally agree with this comment.

meyert 07-27-2015 07:45 AM

Thanks everyone! makes me feel better. I think I will take the suggestions and audition different color, brighter material for the binding

You all are my QFFs :) I saw that on Facebook this morning

Twisted Quilter 07-27-2015 07:52 AM

Love the quilt, but I agree with Maniac, borders are a little too dark for a girls quilt (IMHO).

BonnieI 07-27-2015 08:00 AM

really nice!

Boston1954 07-27-2015 08:15 AM

I think it frames it up very nicely.

meyert 07-27-2015 08:54 AM

Well my neice has gotten married and some of the tshirts are her now husbands.. so maybe I will think of this one as for her husband :) then make the other one more "girlie"

joe'smom 07-27-2015 08:59 AM

It looks very nice -- makes me want to make one. I especially like the effect of the gray background. If it were me, I'd probably take some photos with dark green fabric laid over the main border, just to be sure. But I think you have it right. Great job!

gramajo 07-27-2015 09:05 AM

I like it the way it is. This is a T-shirt quilt and the emphasis should be on the shirts. After all, the quilt is being made to show off the T-shirts. Your batik inner border add a bit of color without detracting from the center.

Eisy 07-27-2015 10:25 AM

Looks good to me. Let it!!

Vat 07-27-2015 10:43 AM

I really don't like T-shirt quilts but I love the way you have set yours. But I do think the inner border should have been something a little different. Maybe the aqua color in the center bottom.

Leslie333 07-27-2015 10:51 AM

I like it! The shadowed blocks are perfect for the t-shirts. I agree that the narrow border doesn't show that much, but it is noticeable and like others said, doesn't take away from the t-shirts.

Veinurse 07-27-2015 10:55 AM

Oh My! This is done so well. Kids (even 30yr olds) love the dark colors. I say it's perfect. I love what you did to the Tshirt blocks. She will love it!

SherylM 07-27-2015 11:57 AM

I'm not a fan of T-shirt quilts, but I really love this one! I'm adding my vote to the "you got it just right" pile.

This was my thought too.

leaha 07-27-2015 12:09 PM

Love it the way it is, and that is huge for me , I hated the one tee shirt quilt I made

Bree123 07-27-2015 12:16 PM

I like it. One thing I'd probably do with it to brighten it a little bit is couch a yarn in either a mustard yellow or that yellow-green color (or even that teal color) between the 2 borders or between the inner border & the main block.

The other option would be to pick a bright color to quilt the border. But all in all, it's a very nice looking quilt. I usually detest T-shirt quilts, but that one is really attractive.

Melanie Rudy 07-27-2015 01:29 PM

I like the colors of the inside border and how they pick up on the t-shirt blocks. It was an excellent choice. I also like the dark border and the way it emphasizes the whole quilt, while pulling it all together. Nice job.

BETTY62 07-27-2015 04:17 PM

I really like how the dark borders make the colors of the tshirts pop. Great job.

Ariannaquilts 07-27-2015 04:27 PM

I really like it as it is, don't think you need to change anything!

Maggie Mendes 07-27-2015 04:39 PM

I think it's wonderful. Yes it's dark, but the shirt glows. From here looks perfect.

CarolinePaj 07-27-2015 04:48 PM

It looks great to me!

hugs

Caroline

Cybrarian 07-27-2015 06:09 PM

Don't change a thing, it's wonderful!!!

dunster 07-27-2015 06:11 PM

I think it's wonderful as it is. In hindsight you might have picked a brighter inner border, but this one will do nicely.

MadQuilter 07-27-2015 07:16 PM

It really pops the shirt designs.

faykilgore 07-27-2015 08:15 PM

I really like how you did this one. The border is perfect and the inner border goes well without taking over.

Gail B 07-27-2015 08:28 PM

I like the dark background. I don't think a lighter background would compliment the quilt like the dark does.
