I've been cutting the strips for my DGS' orange quilt, was gonna do Rail Fence. But now I'm going to do Tube. Already playing with designs, I'm so excited to start piecing but gotta keep cutting those strips first!!

I thought I remember someone saying the Missouri Star tute was incorrect in the measurements. I thought it was supposed to be 2.5, 2.5 & 4.5. I can't find the post where I thought this was correct. I watched the tute again and she says 2.5, 2.5 & 4.25. She says it turns out to be 4.25 wide. If my calculations are correct, that wouldn't be right. It should be a 4.5...which way is right?

The measurements on the Missouri Quilt Co. are wrong.
You need to cut your strips 2.5, 2.5, and 4.5 in order for it to work out correctly. |
I did not re-add the measurements, but I would think that what ever size the pieced section is, that is what size you cut the plain strip to add. Unless you want a specific size quilt block. I have seen this tube made with three strips and two strips.
Two cut at 2.5 each would give you a 4 .5 inch plain strip. three stips would give you a plain strip cut at 6.5 inch. With out making one, I can not say what the size of the block would be. well...... I did some cutting of paper and I came out with a 4.5 inch strip would yeild about a 6 1/2 inch, unfinished block, 6 inch finished. SO a 6 1/2 inch stips would yeild a 9 1/2 inch unfinished block, or 9 inch finished. So it would depend on if you are set on a certain size block. If not then work with what ever size you want and just make your plain strip the same width and using the 45 degree angle, it will come out all the same.. |
You have it exactly right! You can make any size block you want just by adding strips. Another way it can be done is with two strips made with the jelly roll strips and no plain strip. Does that make sense?

I made one of these last year and it was really FUN. I know I made a couple more but cannot find them right now. This was made with a honey bun or maybe 2.
