I love my DH dearly, but we have to live together, but in a heartbeat, if I were you, I would change my master bedroom into a sewing room, if I lived by myself. I know my DH would live differently if I wasn't around, he would be putting together and fixing cars parts and guns on the kitchen table, pile his magazines and books on every available surface, and have 6 or 7 vizslas running around. You have earned the right to live the way you want to, so, you go girl, do what will make you happy.

KimS 01-20-2012 05:17 AM

I think I'd make the smaller rooms into larger rooms by taking down walls (if they're not support walls) before I'd destroy the bathroom. I say this because of possibly selling the home in the future. :)

janceejan 01-20-2012 05:17 AM

I did it! My youngest DD moved out o a place of her own, the small bedroom was my sewing room/guest room/sleeping room for my husband with a bad back. After she left I moved all my master bedroom out, got rid of the king size bed, bought new mattress for hubby and I. Set one of the small bedrooms up as our bedroom, with usual furniture and tv. Low and behold, DD moves back in.....give her the other small bedroom and will continue to use the master as my sewing area. Love it.....have my cutting table, my sewing table, ironing board stays up all the time. Room get east sun and is always bright, have room for my design wall. Bathroom is there, master closet for stash storage, set up the computer in there, hubby plays games on it, Pandora going and I sew.....Put a futon in there should we have company, store most of my quilts on it.....A perfect solution for us soon to be again empty nesters.....Go for it, you will be glad you did.

huntannette 01-20-2012 05:19 AM

I would if I had that choice...why not??

ontheriver 01-20-2012 05:22 AM

I had the same problem in deciding, I had a big living room never used and I was outgrowing my sewing room, so I finally swapped rooms and I love it. It's your house, do what makes you happy and works for you.

kydeb 01-20-2012 05:22 AM

Sounds like something I would do for sure! Do whatever is going to work for you and be happy :)

Roxanne 01-20-2012 05:24 AM

Good for you. If I were alone, I'd knock out those walls. At my age, what do I care about resale value? I plan to live in my home until I die and make decisions based on what works for me. I currently have my bedroom in a smaller jack and jill suite. The adjacent room is my sewing room. The master bedroom is an office.

roadrunr 01-20-2012 05:26 AM

I'd say go ahead and use your master for the sewing room. It's your ouse and you liv alone, so what does it matter?
You'll have a great sewing room and you still have a bedroom for yourself. Who needs a big bedroom when you only sleep in it anyway?

JanThompson 01-20-2012 05:30 AM

Several years ago, I went from a tiny sewing room/office into my living room. It was 16 x 22 and no one ever went in it. Once in a while the UPS guy would come to the door, everyone else used the back door.....I really needed the space, so I moved my sewing room and office in there, and I have never looked back. The quilters that come know they can come in that door anytime, and now even the UPS guy uses the back door, although he mostly brings fabric! This room is used every day! Oh that little tiny sewing room I had, I took out a closet and a dark ugly hallway, opened it up into my kitchen and made kinda like a den that connects to my kitchen, and that is used all the time also.....so it was win, win....I say do what makes you happy! Life is too short to not have things the way you want them. Jan

kacklebird 01-20-2012 05:35 AM

I say go for it and enjoy that big sewing room :)

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 01-20-2012 05:38 AM

If you don't sleep in there much anyway what difference does it make. Do what makes you happy.

Pieces2 01-20-2012 05:44 AM

I would do whatever allows you to put all your quilting things into one room.
Your sewing machines and fabric really need to be together in one room.
Except maybe your longarm, since its hard to move.
Hope you have someone to help you move things around.
No reason a master bedroom can't be a master sewing room.

soccertxi 01-20-2012 05:47 AM

I live in a 5 bedroom house also...with my husband and teenaged son. I have thought if I ever live here alone, the master would be my sewing studio. I could fit my long arm AND my sewing machine in there. I say go for it! And happy rearranging!

ambquilter 01-20-2012 05:47 AM

I say, "GO FOR IT!" You will enjoy quilting a whole lot more when you have room to get around your quilt machine.

When we looked at the house we bought last year, that is the first things my husband said, "You can have the master bedroom for your sewing and that will also give you your own bathroom." So my husband and I have our bedroom in the other bedroom downstairs and our boys have the two upstairs bedrooms. It has worked our perfectly.

cheaha39 01-20-2012 05:50 AM

I live in every inch of my house. My sewing room is my dinning room and great room, I enjoy the view and so I sew.

luci4 01-20-2012 05:50 AM

Why not? There is nothing saying that the master bedroom has to be the biggest one. If that works for you , than just go for it.

WMUTeach 01-20-2012 05:51 AM

Dearie, it sounds like you have a plan and just need us to say, give it a try. It is your house and your space. Use it as you wish. Why make your life cumbersome and awkward when you have such a spacious option? (This is a lesson I have learned over time.) Gather help and make the move. Don't like it in a couple of months, then make adjustments. Enjoy! and let us know how this all works out.

southernmema 01-20-2012 05:59 AM

I've already done that and I love having the larger space. I would suggest that you have a bed to sleep on because the older you get, the more you will need a true night's sleep. Best wishes with whatever you decide.

I've been thinking about this for awhile, making the master bedroom my sewing room. I live alone in a 5-bedroom house. Three of them are very small, like 10'x10', and I use one of those for my sewing room and one for an office. The third is a guest room with just a bed and dresser. The 4th bedroom is a little larger and is where the longarm is. It barely fits in there, have to angle it out from the corner to be able to squeeze around one end of it to get to the back. My master bedroom is 15'x16' and it's the largest room in the house practically. I thought about using the living room (it's not used other than to walk from the front door to the family room) but with the cat I wouldn't be able to keep her off of everything. To tell the truth I usually just sleep on the couch in the family room anyway.

I've even thought of having the two walls between the 3 smaller rooms taken out and put in one wall to make two bigger rooms but don't think I want to put that money into this house. Would it be ridiculous to use the master bedroom for the long arm and sewing tables? I could still keep the fabric organized in the other room and make the 4th one my bedroom.

I know that no one else really has any say in it and I can do whatever I want, it's my house. It just feels a little weird to do that.

When my DH passed away and all four sons were finally settled somewhere else, I set up my longarm in the dining room where it fits just fine and still leaves plenty of room for the DR table which seats eight. Took over the Florida room, 24' x 15'. Plenty of room for my big cutting table and all my machines. I store extra fabric in his empty chest of drawers. Hey, it's my house and I do as I please.

lillybeck 01-20-2012 06:09 AM

You are right it is your house and you can do what you want with it. I personally would have no problem using my MBR for a sewing room.

Panchita 01-20-2012 06:12 AM

I'm going to join in with the chorus of encouragement.

It's your house, you bought it. You *paid* for that space, so use it how you want rather than letting it sit there wasting away!!!

Plus, I'd like pictures when it is done. :)

Natalie17 01-20-2012 06:15 AM

Master BR

Believe it or not that is exactly what I have been thinking of doing. I just don't know what to do with the furniture in the room. But, why not ?

lynnsim 01-20-2012 06:24 AM

I agree with the others -- go for it! I'm sure you will love it when it's finished.

BettyM 01-20-2012 06:32 AM

Go for it!

Grannyh67 01-20-2012 06:35 AM

Sounds like a great plan. It is yours do what makes you happy. You only go around once in this old life, so make the best of it. Go Girl Go!!!!!, Granny

echoemb 01-20-2012 06:38 AM

I have a smaller living room area and a HUGE living room. I put my mid-arm and sewing machine and some fabric in the main living room and I now use the smaller LR where my TV, etc is. Like you I live alone and who cares this works for me.

patsynel 01-20-2012 06:38 AM

I think it sounds like a good idea. More room is what every quilter wants. Go for it.

sassyg 01-20-2012 06:40 AM

I agree with the person who said that it's your master and you're the master...so go for it.

tezell0801 01-20-2012 06:45 AM

I would do it in a heart beat. I just started quilting and I see very quickly space will be an issue.

bubble951 01-20-2012 06:51 AM

When I retired, I decided to make my home suit my new life style. I had 4 bedrooms for just my husband and I. For years, I kept 3 bedrooms nice just in case I had company. Now I have a large sewing and craft room, an office and library combination, our bedroom and one small guest room. I love it and the whole house gets used (except the guest bedroom)!

damaquilts 01-20-2012 06:54 AM

I say go ahead. After all who said it HAD to be a MB. I say use space to the best advantage

Rose Marie 01-20-2012 06:55 AM

Thats what I did. The biggest bedroom is my sewing room.
I only sleep in the bedroom so why do you need a big room.
My middle bedroom is now my sleeping room.
But the master is still to small and have my longarm in the dinning area.

nana2madmax 01-20-2012 07:11 AM

We have a large (20x30) living room that we NEVER used. It is now my studio with a long arm, sewing table, cubbies for yarn, shelves for papercrafting supplies, a huge cutting table, a round crafting table and a sitting area to do hand work and read. Oh yes, it also has a wood buring fireplace! I am in heaven.

Moral of the story is...use that master bedroom for a studio, you will never regret it!

Honeynga 01-20-2012 07:26 AM

I live alone in a small 1 bedroom apt; I was whining one day about my quilting/knitting stuff everywhere.....my youngest daughter, said "so?"...IT IS your place and you can live with it like you want to ! So There; IT IS your space and if you want to re arrange it, go for it. What absolutely amazes me is that my bedroom is clutter free from quilting and knitting stuff; probably because I'm fortunate enough to have a "sunroom" adjacent to my bedroom and there is where I keep all my stash, ironing board, cutting table, etc; and then I sew on the dining room table; which is actually in my living room, but that way I can see the "big" tv and keep an eye on whatever I might be cooking.

LoriMcc 01-20-2012 07:56 AM

It sounds like a grand plan to me. If you are comfortable with it, do it!

sewnbug 01-20-2012 08:02 AM

Who says a "bedroom" has to have a bed in it? Rooms in a house are like recipes and patterns to me-a basic guideline to one's creativity. Go for it.

gmloves2quilt 01-20-2012 08:09 AM

Master Bedroom to sewing room

Go for it you will wonder why you didn't to it before now.I went from a bigger room to a smaller room when we moved and i really miss the bigger one.

TymeToShine 01-20-2012 08:38 AM

Sounds like a good plan to me

Momo 01-20-2012 08:38 AM

Make the best of a great idea. Go for it. And then enjoy! You can always sleep on the couch if necessary so you can quilt in the best spot!

JanieH 01-20-2012 08:45 AM

I think it is a great idea! Go for it!
