It is your house and you can do ANYTHING you want with it. I would do whatever makes you the most comfortable and gives you the most enjoyment and practical use out of the space you have. If I were in your position I wouldn't hesitate for a nano second about making the master bedroom a sewing room...in fact, I'd have to ask you what's taking so long! :) Go for it. From what you've said I doubt that you would regret it for a minute. It sounds like it would do nothing but enrich your life and what's more important than that? Good luck with your decision!

I think it makes the most sense for you to use the rooms in such a way that suits your lifestyle. A master bedroom is only a master bedroom because that is what we call it. If you want it to be a sewing room, then go for it. Particularly if you don't mind a smaller bedroom for yourself. I don't think it is weird at all and I imagine that once you do it, you will adjust faster than you think and be glad you did! ;)

you are so fortunate to have so much room. i have a huge master bedroom with two walkin closets and attached master bathroom...recently i needed a little more room and some breathing/thinking space when i am sewing. i took one third of the room for my bed, nightstand and two large dressers plus access to two windows. the other 2/3 of the room i divided in half...one side has my computer desk, file cabinet and everything i need for business. the other half i placed my banquet table which holds my sewing machine, my serger, and underneath three see-thru cabinets that hold my fabric and tools and sewing notions.. one walk in closet holds all my clothes shoes purses etc...and the other stores my folding quilt frames, batting, ironing board etc.. in the middle of the computer side and the sewing side i have plenty of walking space and is where i also have my antique rocker in case i just need some rocking and thinking time. i tested this floor plan out last week and it worked magnificently for me. seems to me that moving your sewing room to the largest room would save you having to move from room to room just to complete a project and when you are finished you can just close the door on it all.

If I were single, I would do it in a heartbeat. Enjoy your new sewing room!
I think it is a wonderful idea. If you don'twant to sleep on the couch some night, use the guest room! Use your house like you want to! It is your house and your decision. DO IT!!!!!!
It makes total sense to me to make the change. Besides if you are only moving furniture, if you don't like it, you can always move it back. It may not make sense to tear down walls anyway. You may find one is a weight bearing wall, so you would have to put up beams.
I have a three bedroom house and just this past week turned the master bedroom into my quilting studio. I got a HQ16 ProStitcher and that's the only room besides the living room it will fit in. So, the decision was easy...moved myself into a smaller bedroom and it's so cozy and peaceful. The master bedroom is now my quilt studio and I'm lovin life! Best thing I've done in a long while. Happy Quilting!

My longarm is in my master bedroom - it was the only place big enough to put it - I have a separate sewing room but for now the longarm is in my bedroom. So why not - if it works for you - do it.
Sounds like a wonderful idea! I would do it if it were me!!
Just change the name of the room from master bedroom to sewing room. Instant conversion.
I have thought of doing the exact same thing...but my husband said, "With your next husband!"
My mom lived in a two-bedroom house with my stepdad. When they moved into this house, my stepdad suggested that my mom use the large room for her sewing. They only slept in the bedroom at night, so using a smaller room didn't matter--plus it had a bathroom! think of the time she saved not having to leave the sewing room for that! 8^)
it was a great use of the space. and, to quote another wise woman, it's your house and you are the master! |
Why not use the master as your sewing room? No sewing/quilting police out here to say no (LOL) and you should certainly use it to your enjoyment! I'd go for it. I am in the process of turning a livingroom in the old part of our house into a sewing room and I have a friend, whose livingroom is her sewing room. Life is too short - make it enjoyable for yourself!
I think it makes sense and it sounds like it would give you a better quilting space!
Haven't read all the posts but I've been thinking of doing the same thing. In fact, what is now my sewing room was my bedroom before my mom died. I have three treadles in my bedroom now so all I'd need to do is move my bed.
If I were not married, I would definitely turn the master bedroom into my sewing room! It has great natural light, like yours it is the biggest of the rooms (except the living room). I would not even hesitate to make that change and to be perfectly honest, I've entertained the thought already. Don't tell my hubby, he'd be hurt ; )
DO IT!!! If you don't like it later, you can move it all back. :)
I measured last night and the longest wall without a window is 190" (but the door opens up against that wall), that will fit the longarm just fine. The other long wall has a window that I think I'd like to have the sewing table in front of for light. Another wall will fit my Ikea cubbyhole unit, another one would be good for a design wall.
I need help moving the longarm and a huge armoir but my son stops by sometimes on his way home from work so that won't be a problem if I just find out what day he can come by. |
Go for it! It's where you spend a good deal of your time. Why keep the best room to be used the least!
I would use it for sure!
If I were living by myself, I'd be doing the same thing. My master bedroom has plenty of space for my longarm (which is crammed into a small bedroom) and there's a lot of wasted space right now. I'd be just as happy sleeping in one of the smaller bedrooms. I, too, thought about connecting two of the bedrooms, but there's the re-sale problem down the road. Your plan makes all the sense in the world to me.
Why not??? If it wern't for DH I would have done that a long time ago!
No definitely not - go for it. makes more sense to have the bigger room used for something other than just sleeping.
if it was me I would use it
If I lived alone I would make lots of changes, Husband of 50 yrs. is still there, so I can't.
I say turn the master into your sewing room and all will be out of sight and away from the cat. |
If that is weird then the Someday Quilts mystery novel by Claire O'Donohue is also weird. In her series about the Someday Quilt shop, the owner Eleanor has an old Victorian house. The sewing room in Eleanor's house is actually the master bedroom because it is the largest. Makes sense to me, but I'm a quilter and realize that space for the stash and machines needs to be huge!!!
Since you have the say so and you are not inconveienced in anyway, but actually would benefit from the change, I say go for it! Get help to move the the long arm-- do you have cute, muscular young man nearby that could help? |
I'm always teasing my DH about making our bedroom my sewing room but he just ignores me. LOL
But I see no reason why you can't (or shouldn't) do that -- in your own house. We don't use our living room anymore either and I tease DH that if I could afford an long-arm, it would go in there. But I would probably put it in my family room and move the sofa back into the living room. Enjoy all your space to enlarge your sewing space. I've taken over 2 bedrooms (so far). |
Use the master! Its' your house, my hubby uses our family room for his N scalel trains! I use a large bedroom for my sewing! We don't care what others think, only our kids come over any way!!
GREAT IDEA, go for it. It is good use of an otherwise unused room.
I have a friend who turned her living room into her quilting studio and was delighted with all the room. If I had the extra room I would do the same......

I've been thinking about this for awhile, making the master bedroom my sewing room. I live alone in a 5-bedroom house. Three of them are very small, like 10'x10', and I use one of those for my sewing room and one for an office. The third is a guest room with just a bed and dresser. The 4th bedroom is a little larger and is where the longarm is. It barely fits in there, have to angle it out from the corner to be able to squeeze around one end of it to get to the back. My master bedroom is 15'x16' and it's the largest room in the house practically. I thought about using the living room (it's not used other than to walk from the front door to the family room) but with the cat I wouldn't be able to keep her off of everything. To tell the truth I usually just sleep on the couch in the family room anyway.
I've even thought of having the two walls between the 3 smaller rooms taken out and put in one wall to make two bigger rooms but don't think I want to put that money into this house. Would it be ridiculous to use the master bedroom for the long arm and sewing tables? I could still keep the fabric organized in the other room and make the 4th one my bedroom. I know that no one else really has any say in it and I can do whatever I want, it's my house. It just feels a little weird to do that. |
I think using the master bedroom for a sewing room is a great idea. If you are like me, you spend more time quilting than you do sleeping. LOL. Why waste all that space for sleeping when you can put it to much better use? Go for it!

I say do it. In the bedroom all you do is sleep. Every quilter needs the largest room available.
It's fine to do what you plan. The good thing about using the master bedroom that way is that you don't have to spend any money on alterations to the house, and, when you go to sell the house, it still has 5 bedrooms!
I think your plan sounds fantastic and SMART! Let us see pictures after you've made the switch!

I have my sewing/quilting room in the master bedroom of our house! Has been that way for about 7 years now.My husband said he didnt care which room the bed was in as long as he HAD a room with his bed in it to sleep in!!!So my little haven is 14x16 and its wonderful!
It's your house, your bedroom so you can do what you like with it, who will complain????????????
I know a lady that just did that she lives alone too and she turned her Master Bedroom into a Quilting Room it looks great I would say go for it
Carol in Delaware I don't have UFO's I have PhD's. (Projects half Done). and I'll be so smart when I finish working on my PhD's. |
I agree with the ones that have given you encouragement. Isn't it nice that you have that option. Go for it.
