Rheinze 01-21-2012 09:52 AM

I have a friend who did exactly what you are talking about. It worked great for her and I'm sure it will be fine for you too.

smurfsmom 01-21-2012 10:22 AM

That is exactly what I would do. My hubby would even be ok with it. :)

grandmaquilter 01-21-2012 11:39 AM

It's your house do as you please. I'd wanted a LA for years, finally last April my DH and I ordered a Nolting Fun Quilter 17" on a 10 foot frame. I was like you, it would fit in the living room which is not used normally, we use the family room, but then I didn't want anyone coming in and seeing the LA in the living room. The other place that it would fit was in our master bedroom which is about 16x18 feet, so with rearranging the furniture the LA has a home along a 16 ft. wall with me having room to get around the LA with no trouble. As for my sewing room, it's still the 3rd bedroom and that is where it will stay. Don't want to change the set up that I have for piecing and regular sewing. In my kitchen when we had the house built, I have a very large wide counter top that I can lay my cutting board and watch TV if I want too.

Don't feel weird about putting your LA where you want it, it is what you enjoy doing.

Using master bedroom for sewing room

I live in a very old home that has 2 bdrms. I sleep in the small bdrm and had a little work done in the larger room so that I could use it for my sewing/computer room. Opened up the closet, inserted shelves and use that area for my computer and the rest of the room houses my two sewing machines, serger and embroidery machine along with tables and storage cabinets. I spend most of my leisure time in that room so it works perfectly for me.

Grandma58 01-21-2012 12:28 PM

I too live alone in a 4 bedroom house, the largest room - which would be the living room in a 'normal' person house is my studio, the living room - not a bedroom- is full of my finished work, a temporary situation until I get it all added to my website, and one bedroom as well as the bathroom and currently the breakfast nook is full of sewing stuff.

quiltmom04 01-21-2012 12:58 PM

Do it!! We've made so many "safe" decisions in our house based in what we thought would be best for resale. Well, we've been here 26 years and looking back, there a a lot of things I would have enjoyed in the house , that maybe would've suited just us, but now...Just DO IT !!!

booklady 01-21-2012 01:03 PM

I'd even consider putting a mini fridge and small microwave in the bathroom if there is one connected to the master. Then you could just forget the rest of the house!!!!!

JayCee 01-21-2012 02:32 PM

I already did this at our house. I spend more in my sewing room now that it is in the master bedroom on the first floor. We now have our bedroom in the larger guest bedroom, the guestroom is the medium sized bedroom and the smallest bedroom(previously the old sewing room) is now the office. Do what feels right to you and enjoy.

I love this "whatever it is" that allows sewing/crafters/young or old ladies (and the man who might be looking over our shoulders) to peruse and enjoy each other's company and comments. I even occasionally have my cup of coffee here with me while I visit. I have been sitting here for over two hours and am starving to death; can't get my husband to fix me something to eat.

So, my thoughts are, you do it (and if you are not able to do it alone, snag the first kid who comes over to visit and y'all do it). I watched the video of the lady's new sewing room and love love love it--she is way more organized than I am, but I have a sewing room built especially for me in our back yard; accomodates my Gammill long arm quilter and table, plus a ton (and I probably do mean a ton) of fabric, about a hundred sewing machines because I have more money than I do sense when I see a machine at a yard sale for $5, my cutting table, pictures on all the walls where there isn't a shelf loaded down with fabric--you get the idea. And I have been in a funk since Christmas and can't make my self go out there and clean it up from the Christmas sewing rush, so it is in a mess, and I don't want to face it (and can't talk a kid into coming over here and helping me get it ready for my next project. Oh well.

DoxieMom 01-21-2012 03:58 PM

Doesn't sound weird to me at all...it sounds practical and a whole lot less expensive than knocking out walls and merging bedrooms (which might adversely affect the resale value of the house in the future...). The master bedroom sounds like a great idea to me!

CarolinePaj 01-21-2012 04:21 PM

I say your house your rules!

When I start feeling overwhelmed by things I do not want to do, like take pictures of my 486 finished items and put them on my web site or taxes, this involves all the paperwork for 9 months - I had computer issues. I set myself an almost non existent goal. Like 6 items a day to photo and put on web site complete with paypal button, 12 receipts a day, I still get to make new stuff and play on the computer. If it is my studio that needs cleaning really badly 15 minutes at a time. I think for me if I get it in my head I have to do it all which could take days I view it as overwhelming and put it off forever. Sometimes starting with the little bits gets me motivated to do more, sometimes not.

I agree with all the other ladies. Do what makes you happy,I think it sounds like a good idea.

I was looking to buy a house, a couple years back, and there was no room to sew in except the master bedroom, in all the houses that I looked at, and the big walk in closets would make a good place for the stash. I have a husband, and I would do that. 2 of the smaller bedrooms for our clothes, and one becomes the guest room if anyone comes. Good plan, I would do it if I were you in an instant. I sew in a 11 X 12 bedroom, but most of the time I am in my kitchen, because of the counter top space in there. And there is a wonderful bath room in there, so handy, since you probably spend a lot of time in there. I cannot think of a better place for a sewing room.

connie d 01-21-2012 07:06 PM

I think you should give it a try. Sounds like a good idea to me. :)

Gleniveve 01-21-2012 08:25 PM

Hi, I would say "Go for it". Whenever I decide to change something
I have this little song I sing. ---"It's my Party and I'll do what I want to".
This home is mine so there is no one else to be affected my my choices.
I have been on my own for over seventeen years, I reckon the decision
is mine. Enjoy the change, Bet you will love it. All the best. Gleniveve.

DonnaQuilts 01-21-2012 09:18 PM

Sure. Go for it. Life is too short to worry about it when it is right for you.

earthwalker 01-21-2012 09:42 PM

What a lot of support for the master bedroom takeover (and quite rightly so!). Since when did we have to conform to some idealised magazine type layout for our homes? Homes are for living and working in, not as showpieces for others. Go for it and don't forget to show us the pics....you know how we love those:)

Rose L 01-21-2012 10:18 PM

We are in the midst of planning a major remodel. I have a huge kitchen that I hate because it wears me out to walk so far to complete each task (I'm disabled). I got to thinking yesterday about moving the kitchen to a much smaller bedroom that adjoins the present kitchen, turning the kitchen into a quilting room (large enough for my long arm), reclaiming my DR, by getting the La out of there, which would actually adjoin the small bedroom turned kitchen which is currently not the case and finally it would allow me to return the sewing area to a complete guest bedroom. Same number of rooms and all functions of said rooms would be complete. It would also give us the space for the addition of a much needed 1/2 bath since currently the only bath in this house is in the master bedroom. I am obviously a firm believer in using YOUR space the way it best suits you. Go for it!

cmputerdazed 01-21-2012 10:22 PM

Oh I think I would do it in a heartbeat. Sounds like it would work out well.

pittsburgpam 01-21-2012 10:41 PM

I already have a small fridge in the master bedroom. :) When my daughter and her 3 children lived here while her husband was deployed I spent a lot of time in there, practically lived in there.

I did some space planning and with the longarm in there it is still pretty tight. I read for one machine that it needs 14' x 7' of space for a 10' table (total length is 12' it says). That's half of the room. I do pantos so I need room behind the machine.

I watched the 3 grandkids this evening and I am green with envy about their house. The downstairs has a HUGE living/dining room and a HUGE family room plus a big, eat-in kitchen. A longarm would fit nicely even on the shortest wall in either room. Need to do some more fidling with it.

Annaquilts 01-21-2012 10:57 PM

Go for it! What is keeping you from it? Also no one would reallywould have to know unless you have quilters visiting your quilting room and they will probably love it. I see no need to change the other little room and take the walls out when you have a perfect room waiting for you. I would even toss the couch and a TV in there too. Have fun. Can't wait to see the pictures.

pittsburgpam 01-21-2012 11:49 PM

A plan

1 Attachment(s)
EQ7 isn't just good for designing quilts, it can design quilting rooms too. :) I used inches for feet and set blocks for items in the room.

That is the only room that I can lay quilts out on the foamboard on the floor for blocking (and keep the cat off of it) so I'd like the 4'x4' pressing surface to be on rollers so I can move it out of the way.

brushandthimble 01-22-2012 11:53 AM

looks like your have a plan and it coming together. will be waiting to see finished pictures:)

gramajo 01-22-2012 12:51 PM

 Go for it! The plan looks great!

vondae 01-22-2012 01:02 PM

There's no one there to tell you you can't, so,I say go for it. Jump right in there and do it. Makes sense to me. You can alway use a smaller room for your bedroom. You're only sleeping in there once in awhile. Sound like it would make your quilting easier.

sewgarden 01-22-2012 01:06 PM

I think it sounds like a great idea. Maybe then you will make your bedroom special and it will be a nice place to sleep instead of on the couch. The sewing room will be nice and big for all your things. Have fun with your rearranging.

craft lover 01-22-2012 02:40 PM

I live alone in a two bedroom place and made the master my sewing room and I sleep in the small bedroom

grandma lo 01-22-2012 02:40 PM

Love the idea

I love the idea. I would do that in a heart beat myslef. I have thought about this many times (a husband interfers for now :-) I think the only down part would be the use of the master bath. I kind of like it so close to me at night. But if you are the only one in the house - who cares. You go Girl!!

labtechkty 01-22-2012 04:37 PM

What's so strange about it...I say go for it and enjoy your new sewing room!!! post picts when you get it set up!!!

kaylfordsollimo 01-22-2012 06:09 PM

I did exactly that in a 3 bedroom house. Shortly after I had had 2 skylights installed in the master bedroom it occurred to me that the incredible light was being wasted during the day and I found myself standing in there looking at the sky. So I made the switch and have never regretted it for a single minute. I use one of the bedrooms for me and one as my guest room. It works out well. Have fun with it.

SandyQuilter 01-23-2012 06:17 AM

Eight years ago, my husband suggested that I take our Master Bedroom as a sewing room. He'd just tripped over something for the third time that day coming into my sewing room--the 2nd sized BR in the house. I waited three days, kept asking him if he was sure about my moving and he said yes. Day four I moved. Took three days. I have a lot of "stuff," and everything is essential. I've outgrown it now, but wont' take over my living room--I use that to watch TV at night and do handwork. I say MOVE. Why cramp yourself when you live alone.

Happy, spacious sewing.

For the re-sale of you house I would leave the wall as it. But if you don't use your master bedroom. move on in. You live there you can do what you want. Maybe you will be able to sleep in one of the smaller bedrooms and feel more comfortable instead of a larger room or the couch.

I think that would be nice for you to have all in one room and room to move around. good luck

Turn Master Bedroom into sewing room

Originally Posted by pittsburgpam (Post 4890570)
I've been thinking about this for awhile, making the master bedroom my sewing room. I live alone in a 5-bedroom house. Three of them are very small, like 10'x10', and I use one of those for my sewing room and one for an office. The third is a guest room with just a bed and dresser. The 4th bedroom is a little larger and is where the longarm is. It barely fits in there, have to angle it out from the corner to be able to squeeze around one end of it to get to the back. My master bedroom is 15'x16' and it's the largest room in the house practically. I thought about using the living room (it's not used other than to walk from the front door to the family room) but with the cat I wouldn't be able to keep her off of everything. To tell the truth I usually just sleep on the couch in the family room anyway.

I've even thought of having the two walls between the 3 smaller rooms taken out and put in one wall to make two bigger rooms but don't think I want to put that money into this house. Would it be ridiculous to use the master bedroom for the long arm and sewing tables? I could still keep the fabric organized in the other room and make the 4th one my bedroom.

I know that no one else really has any say in it and I can do whatever I want, it's my house. It just feels a little weird to do that.

I see no earthly reason why you shouldn't have the nicest sewing room possible in your home, since it does not inconvenience anyone else. I would make the master bedroom my sewing room in a minute and take the next largest room for my bedroom. In my circumstances, none of my bedrooms are very big so I would take the livingroom which I now use as a diningroom or my family room which we use like a livingroom and make it a studio for both sewing and painting. Right now I have my husband to consider and he hates change so I haven't done that. My sewing room is a small bedroom and my art studio is the dining area, not ideal but better than nothing.

Patti Mahoney 01-27-2012 06:07 AM

Wow, good for you. I would love to have an extra room in my house that I could dedicate to only quilting/sewig. Right now I'm in the precess of purging my house, husband included, lol and when I'm done with that/him, I'm planning on turning my biggest bedroom which you could consider the master bedroom into mysewing room. I, too, sleep on the sofa most of the time. I start my applique pieces and before I know it, I'm asleep on the sofa. So, hey, like everybody else says and I do too, go for it......Have Fun! ! !. Let us know how it turns out.....Got Pics??? LOL

Peggy Jeanne 01-27-2012 07:28 AM

Go for it! It is a great idea!!!!!

Paula H 01-27-2012 08:10 AM

I live in a town house and have two master bedrooms. I spent the entire summer turning one of the bedrooms into my sewing room. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Now I have space and light. You won't regret it. I did put a day bed in the "sewing room". It gives sleeping space when I need it and there's lots of space underneath to hide (I mean store) plastic containers of stash, batting, etc. GO FOR IT !!!!!!!!!!

jmess 03-20-2012 08:19 AM

I turned my master bedroom into a sewing/quilting room a year ago and I have no regrets. Go for it!
