Yesterday, my 8 year old GD decided she wanted to sew something!! So, right off to the machine we went. She looses interest fast and I didn't want to take a chance!LOL I got out some charm squares, and showed her how to make one of those folded coaster. She dfid really good!! In fact, she made two!! Then little brother started bugging, so that was the end of that. She is coming for the day on Friday, and she wantsd to make more!!! And today, I got to our Walmart, and it does have fabric, not a huge amount, but enough to get what I was needing, and it was on bolts, not pre-cutsd, and it was Cranston cottons. Was able t o get the insulbrite( have to make some potholders and be ready for GD. Oh, made DIL an apron today too, and finsihed some PJ's for GS. Good day here!!

I tried to get my eight year old granddaughter to sew with me. She said NO THANKS!! I am afraid of that machine!! So, I will keep hoping she shows an interest.

What an awesome day!!! You have a sewing buddy :D:D:D
I love sewing with my DGD and DGS. Makes my day!
Carol, which Walmart did you go to? I started to stop at the one on Winchester Road (by Hamburg) this afternoon to see if they had fabric and went to Michael's instead.
O what wonderful remembers you both will have. She will treasure it for many,~~~ many years to come. You both a very blessed.
Congrats on your productive day! :)
You've had a busy, productive day. It's nice that your GD wants to learn how to sew and that you were able to find what you needed at Walmart! Sounds like you both will enjoy your time together.
Whoo hoo, what a great day it sounds like..
Sounds like a wonderful day to me. I'm glad she is starting to sew. Bring on the next generation.
Carol, what fun that sounds like! She will always have those memories of sewing with Gramma!! :D
How exciting, and you found a project she liked doing! I think that's the hardest part.
Sounds like you had a fun & productive day. It always feels good to get things finished up.

ah, to go back to 8 year old granddaughters. mine are 12 and 15. they were both excited to learn to sew, quilt, knit, anything when they were 7 thru 10. now they have too many other things going on with music, school, cheer, and friends. sure do miss them little ones.
enjoy the time now. hopefully yours will continue to like sewing. |
Sounds like you had a perfect day!! Productive too!!
Wonderful! The last time I kept my DGDs for the day my oldest made herself pajama pants from beginning to end with Grandma just guiding. She is 13, my 10 yo DGD doesn't want anything to do with sewing.
Congratulations are sewing with DGD! My DGD is not interested in sewing yet. The other day she brought me her Girl Scout vest to have two patches sewn on it. I'm waiting for the day when she shows some interest!!

What a perfect day. How wonderful that GD is interested in learning and excited about her projects. Sounds like GM is very thrilled!
My 10 year old GD is sitting there right now sewing some squares together, I have tried and tried to get her to sew with me to no avail, and out of the blue she got up and said "Gram, what can I sew?" So I dashed to my sewing room and found some beautiful squares for her to put together, ain't life grand when you have a child who wants to be like her grandmother.
The kind of day you had is what gets us back to the sewing machine and gets us through the hard days. Your GD will remember these days. Good for you!
Busy but fun. glad you get to enjoy her
What a fun time !!!!
My 8 year old GD just finished her first quilt top and did a really fine job. She informed me that she could select and sew and I did not need to stand nearby. After that she laid out the 6" squares to start the next one. It is such a pleasure to see her do this as my children were all boys and having a girl who is interested in making quilts it an added gift. Happy holidays.

What a happy memory your made with your DGD. I can barely wait until Olivia is old enough to sew. I have several toy sewing machines I will be giving her if she show any interest. Her Mama sews so maybe she will.

My grand-daughter, now 6, has always been fascinated by the machine. I'm hoping she'll ask to try herself soon. Two questions: 1) has anyone bought one of those children's beginner machines that they sell at JoAnns, and what did you think of it? and 2) can someone recommend some easy patterns that would interest a child - without resorting to the cutter? (She's already sliced opened a finger playing - against orders - with one of my pins.) Thanks.

I bought the really simple machine at our fabric store in Anderson, she soon graduated to my first machine by DH and now went back to the simple machine, it does staight and zig zag but she is happy with that..I am so scared of anything right now except sewing 5" squares together, she made a pillow, and was so proud of herself...I wish I had someone back then to egg me on to try harder...we are all angels you know, grandparents do so much more than you ever knew...keep on trying with those children, they are all so eager to be proud of themselves, we all need that don't we?

My 9 yo GD loves to sew. Taught her and her mother this summer. When I got my new Janome Horizon, I gave them my Bernina 135. They were thrilled. DIL has made 4 aprons for her, Emma, her mom and sister. Did a really good job. Makes me so happy they love my hobby. Of course, little brother (7) likes to sew too - he makes blankies for his monkey!
I have 3 daughters and only 1 has shown a little bit of interest in sewing.
Hoping i will soon have grandchildren and maybe have a bit more luck with them. Hope you have many more hours of sewing enjoyment with your GD |
Awesome! I need to pick up some insulbrite as well. I think I'm going to make my mother in law and maybe my mother a kitchen set.
It's great when they learn something. You should also have her make something that she will really like a lot - like a zippered pouch or something - like a pencil case. I have taught a few teens to sew and a zippered pouch is always a hot item and really really easy. |
