I guess I'm the dummy on this board. I've been looking at the blocks that have been fisished and posted on here not knowing that it was a swap or what the deal was. I think it is a very beautiful block and would love to make one if I had the pattern. Where do I get it and where would I send it when finished. I've read about all the frustration some of you have experienced but I won't let one little block get the best of me. I keep on until I make at least one before I quit. It doesn't look all that hard to do. If someone would get me the information or pattern, I would make it. Thanks in advance.

I sent mine. Could make another - what color?
This was my first paper pieced project & I had no trouble with your pattern.

dreamgirl 07-16-2011 06:59 AM

I'm still in the process, sorry! This is my first attempt at pp, so going a few rounds (no, make that many rounds) with the seam ripper. It will be on it's way soon. Pinky swear.

tlstick 07-16-2011 07:00 AM

Candlequilter, I am sorry to say that after 3 attempts and even following your tutorial I still cannot complete a block with your pattern. I know that I promised a block in exchange for the pattern. So I will try again now the frustration has past (till I think of it and get shivers down my spine and a migraine) send you a block. I had my Gf try and her's looked better than mine but still not perfect and she is an experience quilter.

Gail B 07-16-2011 07:04 AM

Sherryl I can't find your mailing address in my email file. Must have deleted it after sending the first block. Please send again & I will send s couple more blocks.

hoppyfrog 07-16-2011 07:24 AM

After several attempts all I can make is circus tents with the pattern. I can't get the center to lay flat. I won't send out a block I'm not happy with. I have deleted the pattern from my computer. Sorry.

crafty116 07-16-2011 07:36 AM

i have not forgot you just no time have not been in sewing for over a month you are no.1 on list hope to get to the sewing soon. crafty116

Bobbinchick 07-16-2011 07:40 AM

I sent mine to you after making attempts on making it, but hopefully it got to you ok. Maybe I will make nother one also. Now where did I put that pattern? Ah here it is. Take care, Huggies, Fay

caspharm 07-16-2011 07:58 AM

Sherryl, I am also willing to make another block. Let me know what colorway you need.

Barbara Lee 07-16-2011 08:13 AM

Sherryl, it has taken me forever to get the hang of the pattern but yesterday I sat down and put it together but the center looks awful and I don't know how to fix it. I'll try another. Sorry because I really wanted to learn how to do it plus help you, Barbara

Quilting Grandma 07-16-2011 08:19 AM

Let me know what color way you need and I wil send a couple more. I found the pattern challenging, but managed to get one one done and sent.

wildyard 07-16-2011 08:25 AM

I am one who also had to give up on making the block successfully. I tried and tried and just could NOT get it. So I am asking one of you to please make a block in my name for the quilt. I will so appreciate it and so will candlequilter. I will happily send you the fabric if you wish. PM me with your address and I'll get it in the mail right away. Hugs and smiles, Linda aka wildyard

Gail B 07-16-2011 08:33 AM

If you can't do the pp one you can send her any block.

JLMiller 07-16-2011 09:02 AM

i also am so sorry I have not gotten you your block... i have struggled and struggled with this block. if you'd like me to just tear it up that is fine i do understand but I am still trying.. lol.. if I ever get it.. I do plan on sending one to you just unfortunately don't have a date in site due to the problems I'm experienceing with it sorryyyyy hugsss joyce

feffertim 07-16-2011 09:38 AM

I too have tried and tried and just can't get it right. So sorry candlequilter, I will send you a different block but am having knee replacement and not sure when I will be able to sew again.

susie601 07-16-2011 09:40 AM

I sent you two. I am so sorry you haven't gotten more. I will watch this post to see what colors you are needing most and I will try to see if I can help you out. I am so anxious to see what a whole quilt will look like. Your star is still my favorite! Thank you!

Candlequilter ... correct me here if I am wrong or overstepping my bounds:

Hey, guys and gals .... it sounds as though there are a lot of pink faces out there -- and I am sure that is NOT what Candlequilter had in mind ...... It is nice to read the up-dates and explanations, but the bottom line is .... She designed this block pattern, she offered it to us, and she needs feedback ...

You've done a fair job of doing this; but, please: Think about it a little more: You CAN do it ... maybe not now ... but in time ...

I don't think she wants you to delete the pattern from your system ... - I think that she would like to have you try it in your own time as your skills level progresses ....... But she is also trying to do charity quilts and would like to have your appreciation of her pattern efforts by simply donating a substitute block that you are comfortable making in the desinated usable size and colorways. You may have orphan blocks or swap blocks hanging around that would do the trick ....

If you send her a substitute block, perhaps if you send her your first attemps she can adjust them to her needs, or give you tips as to where you or your pattern is going amiss ...

Perhaps your own more detailed explanation as to what went wrong in the piecing will help her more in taking another look at her pattern .... maybe a milimeter wrong-angle of line can throw things off? .... maybe you are using more or less than 1/4" seams?

I made two blocks for her - my first experience paper-piecing ... neither was perfect .... On the first I thought "oh, I don't need to cut accurate rectangles, I can just use odd-shaped scraps.... Well, maybe an experienced paper piecer could, but I should never have tried that method .... I got totally frustrated when I thought the "perfect" scrap did not want to turn the right way once it was seamed.....

The second was definitely better than the first ...... but far from perfect. I took the time to cut as directed and to trim back the seams as directed and to press as I went ... To have patience, and to be easier on myself.

Although the time frame between getting my first pattern and sending the first block was over two weeks, I sent it - warts and all . It took another week and a half to get the nerve and stamina to finish and send the second block ....

Candlequilter seemed very happy to receive both of them ....

It IS a difficult pattern .... I found that if I held the two printed sections up to the window, the patterns were not absolutely exactly the same. Perhaps it was my computer, my inaccurate resizing of the printable pattern, I don't know .... but it was close - close enough to proceed.

I ended up with humps and bumps the same as a lot of you seem to be talking about .... I just kept adjusting my seams as close as I could get ... if I had a hump, I cheated and took a bigger seam ..... if it was out-of-whack, I ripped and re-sewed .... spritzed-and-blocked-and-pressed-and-fumed --
and, yes, cried!!!

But they got done - and they both got sent ..... Whether she can use them or not is yet to be seen -- but she will need more of YOUR blocks before mine and all the others that have been contributed can make it into "The Quilt" ....

As a first-time paper piecer I am STILL working on my third and fourth candle star blocks ... I am coming closer to what I think is acceptable .. and I'm learning more and more about paper piecing specifically, and about myself in general ....

I considered giving up and going the alternate route to fulfill my comittment in having received the pattern: Candlequilter had asked that if I could not master the candlestar block, that I could send a 12 1/2" block of my choice .... either in patriotic colors of red-white-blue .... or an autumn- or spring-themed one ...... I understood that she would work these in with any successfully finished candlestar blocks to make a nice quilt to be donated to Quilts of Valor ...... NOT A SWAP....

To get the pattern, all I had to do was PM her .... If you are new to the board, you may or may not know you have to officially login to the sight and get the Private Message note in the top section menu part of the quilting board screen before you can send a PM (Private Message)

...... Candlequilter will then send you an email or a return PM outlining specifics ... i.e., how to get the pattern, and to ask for your exchange commitment .... As I said, she is NOT insisting that you send a finished candle starblock -- just a 12 1/2" unfinished-size block that can be used for that purpose ....

However, since she designed this quilt block, you can see where she would like to know of your successes and frustrations in attempting the block -- and if you used another method other than paper piecing to get good results .... without feedback, designers cannot adjust their patterns to fit the different levels of quilters out here .....

So all of you guys and gals, don't back away ..... think it through ... put away your frustrations for now ... try it again at a later date ...... but keep her posted on your progress, both successful and mishaps.... notice I did not say failure - just mishaps ... - and just try to send her a usable 12 1/2" block for now....

Happy quilting, everyone!

spartan quilter 07-16-2011 10:15 AM

I got my pattern at the beginning of spring, and am VERY new at PP, so I just sent off 2 other quilt blocks. I knew that I didn't have the time to work on such a project and make a good block. Candlequilter was apprecitive of the 2 blocks that I sent her. I am still going to work on her star pattern, but need to wait till I have a full day to do nothing but that. No laundry, vacuuming, baking, mowing grass, pulling weeds, working part time, you get the picture. I am excited to try it and hope that I can get it to turn out right, at least after 3 trys. Have to give myself that many chances before I will throw in the towel.

I apologize for not having done the block yet. My 'excuses' are that I'm in the middle of a major quilting project for one of my daughters that I desperately want to finish for a house warming gift as she moves into her first house in August. Secondly, I failed to realize you needed them sooner rather than later. If you can wait another month I should be able to make at least one and send it to you.

postal packin' mama 07-16-2011 10:32 AM

I think it is a very beautiful block and would love to make one if I had the pattern. Where do I get it and where would I send it when finished?

Yes, what she said [above]. If you're still sharing the pattern, I'd like to give it a try.
What colors?

chuckbere15 07-16-2011 10:40 AM

I never asked for the pattern, but if you like, I can send you a block. I would need the pattern. I love doing things for charity. My email is [email protected]. I can work on it on Monday.

Grandma Jane 07-16-2011 10:53 AM

Dear Candlequilter,

Thank you so much for sending the pattern. I am sorry I have not been able to send a block yet - I do intend to do so toward the end of August. Between my work travel schedule caused by closing one of our facilities, vacation to see grandson, caring for my 91 yr old father, re-doing my kitchen (without a kitchen right now) and a wedding reception at my home scheduled for 8/13, I am a little over committed. Please be patient til near the end of August.

sailsablazin 07-16-2011 11:42 AM

I am also pink-faced. So far we have gone through 2 printers, 4 hours on the phone talking with Manila (wherever that is) trying to fix it, $100 in computer repairs, only to be told that our motherboard is dying. Not an expense that we want to take on at this time.
Will send a block...please be patient. I also believe strongly in helping others.

Thanks for asking. The pattern was sent in exchange for any 12 1/2 block. It does not have to be the Candlequilter Star block but any block you wish to send. I tried very hard to state that each and every time I sent the pattern because I know that the pattern can be time consuming for some. Plus I know how busy everyday life can get. So it has always been for any 12 1/2" block they wish to send. Plus many people like to get patterns to be used or tried later on - so sending any 12 1/2 block helped to eliminate the rush to try this one. Maybe I didn't make that clear enough but I really thought I had.

Thanks for asking again,

Somehow I missed the part about being able to send a substitute block. I will happily make and send another block. :D That will make me feel better! Thanks for making that part known. Hugs and smiles for all.

Floralfab 07-16-2011 01:27 PM

Candlequilter, I too am having one heck of a time putting the block together. I have all of the pieces done but can't get it to work. I will try again to follow your tute. I havn't forgotten your kindness in posting your free block. I may take it to the Aug. quilt guild meeting and see if more advanced paper piecers can help me. Don't give up on me.

Mine is shaping up nicely. I had something really going, but when I started to realize how it was going to fit together I knew it was not right. So printed new pieces and now work is going well. I am so sorry it has taken me so long. If things go as well as they did today I will gladly make at least two for you. Don't give up on the board members, they'll come through for you.

i did the same thing! I worked for a day and a 1/2 on mine and when I went to put it together, I realized that I didn't place the fabrics correctly! When I started the second one, it just flew by!! Had it done in just a couple hours!!

I want to do your block though just to prove that I am capable of getting her done! I have sure seen some pretty ones coming on here though.

Linda, I'm so happy to hear that somebody else had this prob. I tried sev. times but it just would not print. Then I tried to draw it off the computer screen.
I loved Sherril's star & wanted to contribute a block to her, too.
