Thakt is a cool idea

DH made me a small "ironing board" that's perfect for ironing 12-1/2" or smaller blocks. He cut a 14" square out of scrap plywood, and we covered it with a layer of Insulbrite, then a layer of cotton fabric to make it more attractive. I can stand it up in the floor beside my table when I'm not using it.

That little thing has come in SO handy!

You could turn one into an ironing table and the other one into a cutting table. Or, better yet you could make two removeable tops (one for cutting and one for ironing). The luggage racks might offer more flexibility

Hi! I bought one of the black plastic tv tables from Walmart. My dh cut a piece of thin plywood(about 1/8")to fit the top of the tray, then I layered silver ironing board fabric then followed by several layers of a heavy felt-like batting that I think is actually used to make dining room table pads. Then made a fitted cover for the board. So far, its worked fine.
It's great to have, and is just the right height to fit under my sewing table. It's out of the way but at the same time easy to get to when I need it. Chris

I added a fold out leaf to a desk I was using for sewing. Covered it with a beautiful flowered fabric. Then when I steam pressed something on it --- it faded on my project!!! Just a reminder - if you use printed fabric make sure it's color fast. I have a set of wooden TV trays and I think I'll make a covered board to sit on top of one so I'll still have a usable set.

Love it.

I use a tv tray all the time. I put a ironing pad on one side and the other has a cutting mat. At a retreat I went to one of the shops had made a "mini" big board to fit the top of a wooden TV tray. It was a good idea, but the price was too steep. They wanted $68 for the top and Tv tray. I think I will ask dh to make one for me. A little bigger than what I have but not that much ($68) bigger.

great idea, would love to move the big ironing board OUT of the sewing room for more space (it is either that or walk to the other end of the apartment to iron)

CarrieAnne 05-17-2011 06:14 AM

that looks awesome!

I took your post yesterday to heart. Saturday was a yard sale day, and I had found an over the door, fold up ironing board for 2 bucks, BTW, the ironing board is a good foot shorter than a conventional board. Where my machine is positioned, I knew I couldn't use the ironing board the way it was meant, so after some brainstorming, I remembered the 2 rolling, wooden carts with drawers that I had originally purchased to fit under my LA to hold thread, etc. Unfortunately once I had them put together, they ended up being too tall to fit underneath...just my luck, so there they sat. I dismantled the ironing board from the frame and took the 2 rolling carts and placed them back to back and screwed the ironing board to the tops. I covered the ironing board with Insulbrite and placed the original cover over top of that. There is about half an inch of air space between the bottom of the ironing board and the tops of the carts, to eliminate any warpage (is that even a word?) Now, I can use the frame that I removed, as a support for something in the garden, since it's powder coated and shouldn't rust...notice I said shouldn't...LOL. I love to repurpose! Thanks for sharing your cool idea!!!

Oh cute fabric. My DH made me one but we just bought the palin thick fabric. I think I will make a little cover for it too.

okiepastor 05-17-2011 06:27 AM

Neat idea---though I keep the ironing board three rooms away so I have to get up and stretch! Still I think I will make one for some of the iron as I go blocks!

That is cool, in fact the retreat committee of my Guild made 23 of them as a gift for our ladies at the retreat.

cherrio 05-17-2011 07:24 AM

I have that fabric! It was to be kitchen cafe curtains; then I changed my mind about the paint color. maybe next time I paint lol

Sharonsews 05-17-2011 07:36 AM

I love this idea!

clynns 05-17-2011 08:26 AM

I bought an ironing board pad and cover and used a towel on the board itself. I used a stapler and 1 1/4 inch staples to put the padding around the tv tray. It's great to have beside you when your doing a log cabin quilt.

dixiechunk 05-17-2011 08:42 AM

Palin fabric? Made by Sarah Palin?

Saw this on the other site, and already decided it would be my weekend project. Already have flat wooden TV trays that aren't being used. Fluffy towel, a little elastic around a piece of muslin and BINGO.
Great idea, just one of the housands of reasons I love this site.

Quiltbeagle 05-17-2011 09:05 AM

I made one of those, put aluminum foil on the tray to help reflect heat, covered it with cotton batting and a muslin cover. LOVE it! Very handy next to the sewing machine.

dash2000lbs 05-17-2011 09:16 AM

Nice

sak658 05-17-2011 09:21 AM

I made me one of those, it sits to the right of my sewing chair, love to iron my blocks there, when I get one done. Handy for laying strips in order to sew them, or block pieces ...Sometimes, my pins, scissors, or seam ripper lay there. Just really handy. I love it...I put a layer of foil, 3 layers of batting, and then covered with fabric with elastic around the edges to hold it on, can take it off to laundry or etc. I used it a lot doing my log cabin quilt that I just finished up. Got my wooden tv tray at Walmart. When not using it, it folds up and stands at the end of my treadle singer out of the way...

Mis. E 05-17-2011 09:42 AM

I done some paper piecing and thats when I discovered the TV tray is a big help no up and down all the time

grandma anna 05-17-2011 09:55 AM

This is such a great idea I will have to make one for myself soon.

usewgirl 05-17-2011 10:06 AM

Really a super neat idea. Got to make one.

Luscious Marilyn 05-17-2011 10:21 AM

I just purchased a black TV table from a garage sale also, did miss out on a blond wood set, but that was my loss....I can't wait to get my table top covered, some one used a heat resistant ironing board pad, which maybe a good idea. That was such a nice suggestion, the other tip I really was thankful for was, to use a hanger with clicks on it, to hang the rulers, that works so neat for my double closet. I open the doors and they are right there, I don't have to hunt for them, or pick them off of the floor. Love the tips !

leiladylei54 05-17-2011 10:23 AM

Ohhhh, I love it. Where did you find the idea and is there a pattern or formula to use to make it???

carolynbb 05-17-2011 10:38 AM

Looks like a good idea and I already have a strudy TV table that is not being used anywhere - just might add this to my project list! Thanks. And the tute is great too.

Thumbelina 05-17-2011 10:41 AM

Love your choice of fabrics. Will have to keep a lookout for a table. Thanks for the pictures.

This is for leiladylei54 , who just posted the question, where can you get the pattern for the ironing board TV tray. Check today's newsletter May 17 th and scroll down to "Link and Resources." Click on U TUBE video Small pressing ironing table matt, great instructions right there.

mary quilting 05-17-2011 12:03 PM

great idea thanks

Marysewfun 05-17-2011 01:28 PM

I use a wooden TV tray and put that square rotary cutter mat - the one that rotates - on it and use it for either holding the block layout so I can grab the pieces of a block to sew in order - - or also for trimming the 1/4 inch seam on the paper piecing. Works fabulous! As for ironing - I reserve that for my physical exercise - I'm getting bottom-heavy!!! :-)
