Update on Oak leaf
1 Attachment(s)
If I am going to use my oak leaf square to do an octagon table topper, which fabric would you pick or something else totally different? Or would you turn it into something else or add it to my junk on my bulletin board.

How pretty! I like the pumpkins, but the other might look a bit more sophisticated/
I agree with marymm... I like the pumpkins as well. However, the other fabric would indeed make the piece a bit more sophisticated. So, I guess it all depends on which look you're going for. If you like the colors, and you want to stick to something a bit fancier, there are fall quilt fabrics with both color and sparkle.... you may want to think about that option. BTW.... your quilting is beautiful!
love those pumpkins!
Oh gosh, that's a hard one, because either would be gorgeous! I can't decide, but definitely use one or the other and good luck.
I like the pumpkin fabric too but I would use the darker one and perhaps a "fall" gold piping and/or binding.
Whatever you do Please post pictures! Love your quilting!!
Actually it is sooooo pretty, i'd go for the darker fabric.
Could you use both by using the dark color for binding? It will be beautiful whatever you do.
Oh so pretty!!! I do like the pumpkins.
i'd love to see an oak leaf applique out of the dark fabric in the center.
I think the darker fabric dresses it up....makes it rich looking! Your quilting is gorgeous!
I love BOTH fabrics but i think which i used would depend on the room it would go in. If it was in the kitchen, i like the Pumpkins and then use the dark fabric for binding and the back. If it will be used in the family/living room i would use the dark fabric. But thats what would work in my house.
But honestly, I absolutely don't think you can go wrong..... Your quilting is the highlight and of this topper and it is BEAUTIFUL! |
Why not put a strip of the leaves, then a strip of the pumpkins, or vise versa, around the center, with the dark as binding?
I agree that the darker fabric is for the more eligant look.
I love the pumpkins but either would be awesome.
I do love the pumpkins. Your leaves are beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
Would look nice as a pillow too. I agree with using the darker brown to add sophistication.
I think the pumpkins would overwhelm that beautiful quilting. I'd go green.
I agree with pumpkins!
Why not use both? One narrow and the other wider?
I agree with Quiltmom04, my eye was drawn to the pumpkin fabric and not the beautiful quilting. I think the dark fabric is gorgeous and it would show of your work very well.
Could you use one on the front and one on the back, and have two totally different looks for your gorgeous quilting? Is the quilted center reversible, or is the back of it yucky fabric?
If only one can be used I'd go with the dark brown. Alison |
Definitely the pumpkins
I'd use both, in borders. I might trade-in, however, the pumpkins for a colorful (similar fall colors) leaf design to keep up that sophistication that many others have mentioned above.
Let's see that finished product when finished - it will be lovely with that center work. [[ now that I read other posts... I agree with Debbie C ]] |
what to use:
I love both fabrics.. the oak leaf would disappear with the pumpkins and maybe with the darker
fabric. I think the darker would look more sophisticated like some others have said. and you could use an orange quilting thread for the oak leaf( or green or yellow or multicolored!) |

Whatever you decide, make sure you show us the end result. Your quilting is fantistic!
The quilting is so beautiful I would use the darker fabric so it remains the focal point. The pumpkins are pretty but eyes would be drawn to them and away from the lovely quilting
I am going to try to use the dark fabric but I am pondering how I am going to do it. If I have planned a table topper to begin with it would be easier. I will need to try to kind of QAYG with attaching the sashing/batt and back sash and flip them out around the edges. I think I will then repeat the oak leaf quilting on the dark fabric with white thread? I will post pictures when or if it turns out.
What about alternating them?

So far not bad but it isn't exactly fun. Of course I only have a fat quarter of the dark fabric to work with so that makes it even trickier. I wanted to do them going around the center but had to settle for doing the corners and then sides because I couldn't figure out any other way. Oh and that's right, I am out of fabric and will have to figure out what to bind it with.:(
Oooooo! That looks AWEsome!
(Bummer about having limited fabric.) Alison |
I'd paint the leaves different reds, yellows and oranges. PaintStiks probably.

For my personal taste, I would use a smaller print same colors as the pumpkin fabric.
I like that,Tartan, looking fabulous as is. I'm sure you'll find something to bind it with.
I would use the pumpkins with a small border of the dark between. Somehow I don't see maple leaves with your gorgeous oak leaves.
