use polition signs for fabric storage boards????

I hear you could use those plastic ones for wrapping your fabric on if you cut them down, but I was wondering if the ink would come off on your fabric???

Tartan 11-05-2012 05:08 AM

I don't know if you can use them. I do know that you can't collect them until AFTER the elections.:D

BeckyB 11-05-2012 05:10 AM

I was thinking of asking one of them if I could come get them from them after they collected them.

BellaBoo 11-05-2012 06:17 AM

I think most of the signs would be rather grimy. I bought Wilton big rectangle cake boards and cut to get three boards from one. Easy to cut and very sturdy and inexpensive. 3 to a package so I got 9 boards from each package. If it's safe for food it's safe for fabric.

BeckyB 11-05-2012 06:21 AM

Did you get these at craft warehouse?

I don;t know if the signs could be used or not. They could be washed if dirty and you may know then if the paint would come off. Around here they remain up for a long time after the election. This would be the best use of them. I doubt anyone makes their choice by seeing signs.

dunster 11-05-2012 06:37 AM

I wouldn't want any trace of politics in my quilting space.

It is a federal offense to interfere with political signs.
They remain the property of the candidate and here they have 7 days to pick them up after the election and I think there is a fine if they don't. Some candidates might reuse them another year.
However it is the same material as the popular boards so I would hate to see them dumped in the landfill!
I've never seen the ink rub off. They are professionally printed at least the ones I have seen.

amandasgramma 11-05-2012 07:03 AM

:) I think they'd last --- over here, where we have snow and brutal sun, they last forever. I suggest you check with your local quilt shop and get the boards that hold the fabric in the shop. I work in a shop and it's amazing how many of those get tossed (mostly given away)....... :)

I just use the alaskalady's way of folding fabric. Use my 9*12 ruler and the "board" and turn and turn and turn. No extra cost involved!

Tink's Mom 11-05-2012 08:44 AM

i would be concerned with the ink against my fabric...but if you put something against the ink...why not!
I live across the street from a poling place, so I see lots of these sticking out of the garbage cans.
We have used the signs for garage sales...and also for a wedding reception...attached the cardboard wedding sign over the candidate info and it was much more stable. It was just to point people in the right direction for the reception.

Amen!!!!!!

auntpiggylpn 11-05-2012 06:06 PM

I bought sheets of acid free foam core at the Dollar Tree. I cut my pieces 5" X 11" and got 9 or 10 out of each board. I bought 40 sheets and I only have one sheet left!!!

MimiBug123 11-05-2012 07:24 PM

I wonder if those boards are acid free?

I know that there is a board member that uses the election advertising boards. I can't remember who it is though. I think they are plastic corrugated board.

BeckyB 11-05-2012 08:04 PM

I too believe they are just plactic

COYOTEMAGIC 11-05-2012 08:22 PM

Haven't used them for folding fabric but I have used them to make a design wall.

I also used them the line the inside of my chicken coop, lol. Hey, they are corrigated, run some waterproof glue on them and it traps in the air that keeps the coop warm. lol.

terrt 11-06-2012 04:01 AM

Amen! Amen!! Enough is enough!!

Amythyst02 11-06-2012 04:16 AM

All I can say about those signs is thank goodness today is voting day, and I hope you all did vote!! And I am so happy its almost over. I am tired of the phone calls, the negative ads on TV and everything else that comes along with voting.

Debbie C 11-06-2012 04:38 AM

I mentioned using them several months ago. I always stop and pick them up after the event is over and take them home, soak them in a bit of bleach in my sink then cut them down with a sharp utility knife. Just be sure to give them enough time to thoroughly dry out. FREE is the best price. I have not ever had any trouble with inks coming off on my fabrics, and as far as having 'politics' mixed with my fabrics, you can't see it because it's covered by my gorgeous stash! With very little effort and NO MONEY, you can have lots of boards for your fabric stash. I say GO FOR IT!!

Debbie C 11-06-2012 04:40 AM

I'm the guilty party - been using them, loving them, no problems!

Thank you sew much! I would have hated to try this and have the color bleach into my fabric!

The thought of any of those faces staring at me scares me!!! hahahahaha You can get empty cardboard bolts from JoAnns fabrics. They are already the width you need, you just have to cut them to length. Look for the ones that are all cardboard, not with the empty air space in the middle of the cardboards. The staff is delighted to give them away, as it saves them a trip to the dumpster. Using your rotary blades that are just too dull for fabrics are a great way to cut them up!

meanmom 11-06-2012 05:23 AM

I haven't wrapped fabric on them but they do make great bottoms for purses. The guy who put on our new roof had some misprinted signs that he gave me that I have been using. If you are afraid of the paint rubbing off over time cover them with some cheap muslin or some ugly fabric you have. I never thought of using them to wrap fabric. I will have to go dumpster diving tomorrow.

Jean45 11-06-2012 05:24 AM

In our state the voting signs have to come down within a certain period of time. Whoever put up the signs would probably be grateful if you picked up one. They wouldn't have to stop on the side of the road, walk thru the weeds and nettles to get it and then there is the problem of too many in their dumpster. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Have I used one? No. Am considering buying a 6" wide ruler but the Wilton cake board sounds good. After voting am going to Michaels or AC Moore to look at the cake boards.

linhawk 11-06-2012 08:07 AM

I just fold around my 6 X 24" ruler and slide it out.

Oh, me neither!!! I would not trust my precious stash to cardboard that most likely is not acid or lignin-free, not to mention the road dust and chemicals in the ink that could leech or bleed. The cheapest method is ruler-folding. I've done this with my stash and it works great and costs nothing. One tip I'd like to offer: measure before folding, write the measurement down, then staple to front of bundle when folded. I cut index cards in half for this. They are sturdier than paper and if you used some of the fabric, just cross off the amount and write down a new number.

Jingle 11-06-2012 10:18 AM

I fold my fabrics, usually large pieces over my ruler and I can tell about how much I have by how big the stack is. I have much large pieces and lots of stacks.

solstice3 11-06-2012 10:59 AM

Is platic good for fabric??

mjhaess 11-06-2012 12:40 PM

Not sure about the ink...Iwent to the Dollar Tree two weeks ago and bought foam core board..You can cut it into four pieces and it works great for fabric....

I buy them at Walmart. They are cheaper there then other stores that are local. Wilton brand is the same at every store so I buy at the cheapest price.

bbeyes 11-06-2012 01:10 PM

I just got some of the boards from JoAnnes that they throw away and cut them 11 1/2" tall and they work wonderful have them all lined up in my closet and they didn't cost anything.

Dar-midlife 11-06-2012 01:19 PM

Seems like a better use for them!!!!! Dunster is on the right track:-)

snipforfun 11-06-2012 03:03 PM

I like the acid free comic book boards. Got them through Amazon. About $8.00 for 100

Boy do I understand this -but my recycle gene figures if they can be re-used at least they won't be in the landfills for future generations to take care of.

Me either!! :)

Greenheron 11-07-2012 08:26 AM

Get in touch with the candidate or party chairman and ASK about recycling the signs. (Winners may be more amenable. Score and fold them so the printing is on the inside.

par4theday 11-07-2012 09:22 AM

I use stiff card stock that is acid free 12 X 12 folded in half, and they work for me and soo much cheaper, I probably have more that 300 of them, I also wrap the fat quarters, so all of my fabric fits and is displayed nicely. They provide enough stiffness to sit vertically on the shelf, better when shelf is full, but I don't find that as a problem. I wouldn't wrap my fabric on anything that isn't acid free.
