Diana - I'm really loving the quilt. The blocks and colors have a very modern, youthful look. I'm sure she'll love it too.

sewsewquilter 08-30-2009 12:32 PM

That's a winner! Looks good without the blue. It has a very rich modern look. She should love it. The muted colors go with her pillow very well.

sew cornie 08-30-2009 12:59 PM

That's stunning! I LOVE the neutrals with the teal as the popping color. She'll love it!

bearisgray 08-30-2009 01:12 PM

Amazing what color can do - good, bad, and indifferent -

I like it better without the royal blue, too.

Do you all consider "teal" to be a blue or a green?

many craft person 08-30-2009 02:00 PM

looks great

Ducky 08-30-2009 02:21 PM

I love the way it looks, Diana!

JoanneS 08-30-2009 07:17 PM

I think you've got it!

MollieSue 08-30-2009 07:38 PM

Thank you!!! :D I've got it about half way sewn together now..... Yay!!!!! After sewing on it all day, I ran out of thread! lol!!!

Oh - and Thimblebug6000 - I was in such a tiz over my blocks, I forgot to tell you how much I love your quilt!!! I bet your daughter & her husband really love it too!! :D

Kyiav10 08-30-2009 08:16 PM

Diana, I think it's great!!

I love the colours you have and the arrangement. maybe you could mirror the rug in the boarder if you are doing one. Great job Diana

The Blue/Gray came to mind to me as well. It's prominent in the rug and the pillow. It would look great in the quilt.

Love the look without the royal blue, too! It really is taking great shape!

I consider teal to be a mix (of blue and green) and a eye catcher. When I was young enough and still trying to be fashionable I made a lot of my clothes with teal fabrics. The brights always did more for my skins, I thought.

Now I don't wear much that's fashionable and I'd much rather quilt than sew my own clothes.

I was impressed with Bebe's response as it was a better statement of my thoughts. I think you need to have more confidence in yourself. It is an heirloom being born !

Thank you! :D Normally I do have a bit more confidence in myself. But I want to see my daughter's face light up.... And when we recently had a garage sale she brought over clothes, etc. In it were two brand new tops/shirts I had gotten her, and never worn! I took them back, and I'm wearing them! lol!!!!
This is what I've got sewn together so far. There's a few blocks I wish I would have placed better, but it's reaching the point where good enough, is good enough. I need this one done and another for my step-daughter by next Sunday! Then no more birthdays until the end of October! :D :D
I'm half thinking of using the cream and brown as fairly narrow borders. It can't go over 5' as that's all the wider my new quilting frame is. lol!!!
Thank you, all of you, again!!!! :D

Joan 08-31-2009 07:48 AM

Diana, I really like what you've done with the blocks!
I think your daughter is going to love it!

medots 08-31-2009 10:22 AM

I think it is just lovely, the colors would go very well with my sofa. Chuck them this way.
I love them.
Marilee

billswife99 08-31-2009 10:27 AM

Oh that is looking so pretty! The colors are so rich and warm.

crleslie 08-31-2009 10:46 AM

Oh! The colors are wonderful and the pattern not traditional. I LOVE IT! I wonder what some crooked squares thrown in would look like? Great job Great colors!!

Mamagus 08-31-2009 11:44 AM

You made the right decision to get rid of the blues. Now it is a very chic, sophisticated palette. Nice gift!!

wraez 09-01-2009 02:35 AM

Oh it looks so much better without the blues! The quilt is gonna turn out fabulous.

warm quilt hugs, sue

Here's a current picture, I still have to play a lot more with placement, but I'm just trying to focus on cranking out the blocks now. They're only 7", and of course I still have to square them all up.
But I think (am hoping!!) it'll have that rich, more modern look, she likes when I'm done. I had orginally seen it in my head done in batiks, but would have been too pricey.
Thank you again, I truly appreciate all of your help!!!
:D

Diana

Not been here for afew days so I missed this thread of yours. But & it's a huge BUT I love what I am seeing - I think the colours are just so perfect together.
Infact I bought some fabrics in similar colours at the beginning of the year for a quilt I shall be making at another workshop this coming Autumn.
BTW Did I tell you I love it - great job I say

Tisha :P :P

MollieSue 09-01-2009 09:39 AM

Thanks so much you guys!!!
I've got the top done and will be quilting it in a couple of days!! I've started the one for my step-daughter, is on the cover of October's American Patchwork & Quilting. And I'm really wishing I could keep this one for myself! lol!!!! But I want to get this top done too, then will quilt them both one after the other.
Should have pictures on Sunday!!! :D And half feel like I should add all of you names to my daughter's label, as I don't know if I could have done it without you all!
Thanks again!!! :D

ritamaew 09-01-2009 10:44 AM

It looks MARVELOUS !

Sometimes just another idea or two gets one going again -

Diana

I've dreamt of seeing my name in lights but hey I'll settle for it being on a quilt label instead that would be so cool. LOL
Can't wait to see it quilted too.

Tisha

CindyBee 09-01-2009 02:20 PM

Diana, you definitely have her palette now! It looks wonderful and she will love it. I can't wait to see it finished.

Barbie 09-03-2009 07:02 AM

I like the colors in the pillow. I think I would not use the bright blue but a more muted one. Also, the white might work a little better if it were a cream. There is white in the rug but the pillow seems to have more of a cream color. The design that you have come up with is great. Your daughter is going to love it. Keep up the good work.

brendadawg 09-03-2009 07:11 AM

I agree with a previous post, that you should drop the bright blue and the light blue squares. For this untrained eye, they just seem to be different hues or something, and they stand out so much.

The other colors work very well together IMHO. And your work is beautiful. You can do it!!! And I'm sure she'll it, just because you made it.

redrummy 09-03-2009 08:14 AM

I would sew the ones you have, all of them!!!! together in a random pattern just like her pillow. I like that look at it is a "pattern". it is a random pattern!!
I think it would look great. smart idea for you to come up with.

i agree with amma. that darker/brighter blue is great for a scrappy, but not subtle enough for the more neutral look your daughter seems to like.

whatever you do, i can't wait to see it done. what size are you shooting for?

Loose Threads 09-03-2009 10:53 AM

I agree with this idea. Eliminate the bright and light blue and it will be perfect! Very understated elegance.

Debbie1 09-03-2009 11:43 AM

I'd use all the colors! The rug looked so familiar - my daughter has the same rug in her home!

I think it will look great (very modern!) when it's finished and you should keep going!

Jan

I agree. The light and bright aren't quite right with the others, I find it very challenging to create quilts myself but you are on the right path. It will look very modern.

JKMom 09-03-2009 12:23 PM

I really like Jan's suggestion. I think if you followed them you would have a color palette that is closest to what your daughter likes -- and that's the whole point, right?

busiacam 09-03-2009 12:38 PM

Diana,
I would alternate the 'two' block with the 'three' block as was suggested earlier. I'd keep all the colors you have. Put a print in the borders that has all the colors in it. You are doing a very nice job.

makin 09-03-2009 03:57 PM

I agree with ai731. NEVER throw it out. You's got a great start!

Sandra Craig 09-03-2009 04:31 PM

I like your hodge podge --just might add more of the colors in the rug but leave in the colors you already have I think they will add just a dash of color . I think you did a great job of making a pattern like the pillow

NorBanaquilts 09-03-2009 04:32 PM

I can't wait to see the final pic.

MollieSue 09-03-2009 05:16 PM

Thank you again, all of you!!! :-) :-)
I'm just now starting to sandwhich it, and am about ready to toss Kitty outside! He's grabbing pins out of my container, running and sliding on the material.... They're such a joy sometimes! lol!!!! Sure can tell where the saying 'curiousity killed the cat' came from! lol!!!

There's a few spots where I wish I would have done better on placement, but it is as it is. Better finished then perfect......

I got the blocks done for my step-daughter's quilt, and DH just squared them all up for me! :D Just got to sew them together and put the border on.... But I wanted to get this one loaded in my new frame, and see how I can turn myself into two people! lol!!!!!! I'm still thinking/hoping I can get both done by Sunday....
Thank you again!!!! :-)
