I think the finished quilt will look great with her living room colors. And if she doesn't like it, you can send it to me!

This is going to be a great quilt! Why do we agonize so? I think I agree with Jan about the baby/royal blue. With that omitted, the colors remaining are soothing and will go well with both rug and couch/pillows. I can't wait to see it finished!

nursie76 09-03-2009 06:25 PM

Absolutely awesome!!!!!! I can't believe how creative of you to take the rug and pillow and come up with this beautiful quilt!!

SharonC 09-03-2009 06:41 PM

Diana - I think this is absolutely beautiful. You should be very, very proud.
I'm sure your daughter will absolutely love it...I do :)

quiltmom04 09-04-2009 04:26 AM

Looking through a camera lens or one of those peephole things for a door will help you see what colors pop out and maybe are not what you want. But as for your quilt, I like ALL the colors you've chosen!

ambquilter 09-04-2009 05:52 AM

Here's what I would do: I would not use the bright blue and light blue squares, but keep the rest - that way you'll end up with all "neutral" tones which will go really well together. I would alternate the "two squares" blocks with the "three squares" blocks to make a somewhat consistant pattern, but leave the colours random.

I think it will look great (very modern!) when it's finished and you should keep going!

Jan

I have to say I agree with Jan. If you look at the pillow it alternates the two squares and three square blocks. That is what catches your eye. Also, taking out the bright blue and the light blue will let you eye flow over the quilt easier. Changing these two little things will help the quilter's eye you have and your daughter will LOOOOOVE IT!

These are the colors I have in my living room. I haven't made a new throw to go in there yet but your idea has got me excited to start checking out a patterns.

I didn't look at your finished quilt before I made my last post.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!

If she doesn't want it, I do. It's really nice. You did a great job and was it worth all the fretting?

busiacam 09-04-2009 08:42 AM

Diana,
This quilt turned out beautifully! Great job!

Are you a State or Big M fan?

Diana - You did a wonderful job on this quilt! It looks awesome!!!

I think you have a great start. You have done well taking something you know she likes and making something that goes well with it. I have not read through all the comments so may be duplicating someone's idea.

I do think the lighter color and blue do stick out. I noticed in the pillow that they keep a like color theme in a strip. You may try laying out your blocks with similar colors in a row. That way all the lighter and brighter blue would have a unifing look in a row vice standing out in a more muted group. I do like the idea of a unifing sashing color.

Just MHO. It is very nice.

Sandra Craig 09-04-2009 02:22 PM

great quilt

sewsewquilter 09-04-2009 04:05 PM

Love the way your quilt turned out. It's great.

kd124 09-04-2009 04:55 PM

I didn't see this when you were asking for help, but I see you did what I would have done--lose the blues and follow the pattern of the pillow- in the layout. It is gorgeous! If shse doesn't like it, it will match my room. LOL!

sewin'sam 09-04-2009 06:26 PM

I think your squares are wonderful! It's difficult to tell the colors on the computer but your quilt looks like it has more brown & her pillows look more gray??? But, the pillow is kind of random so the quilt should be too if that's what you want to do??? :D

Janstar 09-04-2009 06:56 PM

Great job Diana! She will treasure it!! Really love your design and the colors!!! Show us a picture of her when she sees it!

MollieSue 09-04-2009 08:04 PM

Thank you, all of you!!!! You all are truly wonderful, and I so appreciate all your hints and encouragement!!!
I got it all done tonight, except I've got to wash it and put the label on it!! Besides wishing I'd done better on placement of some of the blocks, I'm also wishing I'd made it a hair bigger.... But it covers my belly to my feet (sprawled on the couch), and she's 3" shorter than I am, so it should be ok. I did FMQ on it, and am thinking it would probably have looked better with SID, but I'm a lot quicker on FMQ! lol!!!!!
I'll post pictures of her with it Sunday evening!!

And I just have to put the borders on, and quilt the one for my step-daughter, but we've not heard yet if she's coming Sunday too. I am seriously getting tired of sitting at my sewing machine! lol!!!! Christie's is the 5th quilt in maybe 4 weeks, or less? I can't remember now! lol!!!!

Oh, and Busiacam - I am neither State of Michigan. lol!!!!! My DH watches the Lions. The only sport I've ever been able to figure out was baseball. lol!!!!!! So once in a blue moon, we go to a Tigers game in Detroit.

Thank you again!!!!!! :) :)

notsewgood 09-06-2009 01:51 PM

i love it

many craft person 09-06-2009 06:36 PM

you wash your quilt after quilting? and not the fabric before piecing?

I know I am dumb but what does SID mean and LMQ?

MollieSue 09-06-2009 07:27 PM

Thank you, Notsewgood! :D

Many Craft Person, yes I wash after I get a quilt done. I'm too lazy to pre-wash. lol!!! Others on here wash first. I believe it's a matter of personal preference. Some have had fabric shrink, colors run, etc, so they pre-wash. I've been lucky so far, and haven't had any problems from not pre-washing. If you have some iffy fabric though, you might want to be safe and wash it first. You can put it in the 'search' above and probably come up with a lot of posts on it, for more opinions, info!

SID is Stitch In the Ditch (or down your seam lines), and FMQ is Free Motion Quilting (dropping your feed dogs, and using a darning foot to do your own thing).

And no, you are far from being dumb!! I didn't know what they meant either before!!
:-)

Sheree from Chicago 09-06-2009 08:19 PM

I don't know about LMQ but SID is stitch in the ditch

I love the simplicity of the pattern. I think she will also. I agree with others that the lightest and darkest of the bues are standing out. If you have blues with a muted tone they would be better. It's a challenge to figure out the right pattern for the right person but I think you are on the right track. Good luck.

Sparky 09-10-2009 07:04 AM

I'm sorry you feel like you hate the project. I've been in that position myself. I also plowed ahead and completed the project and it doesn't necessarily improve. If you do get your daughter involved in selecting the colors she will probably love it even though even though it may not be your favorite. But if her enjoyment is your goal, you will be successful.
After completing my quilt I was not too happy with color selection, I made another quilt from my stash of favorite quilts. I think it is attractive and let me move on. So that's my suggestion. Get the recipient involved so you can detach then do a follow-up therapy quilt for you.
For what it's worth, I like the pattern you are making. The color choices determine the mood. From the two examples of items in your daughter's home they are subtle contemporary and I think the muted colors will be the best fit.
Please don't send it to the trash!!!

MollieSue 09-10-2009 07:34 AM

Thank you, Juneeloonee and Sparky!! :D

I finished the quilt, without the blues. I've posted pictures of it under the title 'Jessie's quilt you all helped me with', in the Pictures section!
:D
