I am trying to make a quilt for my daughter who doesn't care for traditional patterns. So I thought I'd copy her couch pillows and rug....... ha.
Here is what I have. I've got a bunch done in colors of her pillow and rug, and had my daughter-in-law look at it today, who said it needed a 'pattern' to it. She suggested just using the three colors, so it doesn't look so jumbled. My DH said it's a quilt, it's supose to look jumbled, and said he'd use them all except for the light blue ones. And I have absolutely no sense of patterns, etc, myself.

So - what would you do if you were doing it? Other than tossing it all in the garbage, which is what I'd like to do. lol!!

Her area rug I've taken some colors from....

The pillow I've used as a pattern....

Can you post what you've done already? I like the pattern of the pillow and you can easily duplicate that - or something similar which she should like.

Ninnie 08-28-2009 03:25 PM

I like them, and the blue needs to stayl
You could turn them on point, to make it different looking.
Or maybe put them in 9 patches and do some stripping!
I love those colors and think they go great with the pillow and rug! :D :D

MollieSue 08-28-2009 03:28 PM

Thanks Ninnie! You don't think it looks too much of a hodge podge/jumbled mess?
I have no sense of if even the colors go together. I've hated working on this thing since I started, but am bound and determined to make each kid a quilt.....

ai731 08-28-2009 03:29 PM

Here's what I would do: I would not use the bright blue and light blue squares, but keep the rest - that way you'll end up with all "neutral" tones which will go really well together. I would alternate the "two squares" blocks with the "three squares" blocks to make a somewhat consistant pattern, but leave the colours random.

I think it will look great (very modern!) when it's finished and you should keep going!

I like the little patches you have already done. I would take some of the colors and put in solid patches to alternate with your pieced patches. when quilting, echo the squares. I think you are on the right path with this.

MollieSue 08-28-2009 03:45 PM

You all are so great, I could about seriously cry right now! I was so afraid of giving her a quilt that looks like crap. Thank you for letting me to think the idea/blocks are savable.
Ok, I'm taking out the blue ones. :-) Not sure about setting them on point as she has another rug where the sqares are just straight across too. ?
Do a repeat of a 2 block, 3 block, solid patches pattern?
I told my daughter-in-law if Ihad the EQ6 I could do it up there.... Hint, hint for them all to go in for my Christmas present! lol!!!!

bebe 08-28-2009 04:03 PM

I would only use the 4 colors in the rug sky blue, a sandy biege, chocolate brown and a tone on tone background . I would have one of the fabrics have a print and also The three main colors I would find with them and use as the main border fabric and backing. I would use 3 borders a stop border 1 1/2 inches w/ dark chocolate, next a blue 2 1/2 inches and then the final border no more that 5 inches in print. The backing should be the same as the border. This quilt is going to be in her main living space. :D :D

Too many solid fabrics it needs some kind of print stripes, swirls, checks, paisley and etc. The off white could also have a small print or be marbles so the quilt has some movement and not look so plain. Is their a picture in that room that could help you with colors??? The quilt needs some splash and a punch to it. It reads very solid and plain:wink: Take a look a Barnbum's Irish Chain and you will get an idea as to how to add a splash or a puch to a quilt. Hope what I said helps   :D

Take out the blue does not match :D :D

amma 08-28-2009 04:07 PM

Sashing your blocks with a blue/grey would really btie all of your blocks together and you could also use it as a inner border too!!! I love all of the blocks, but the brighter blue ones just seem to stand out a little too much IMHO...but they would be awesome seed blocks in another quilt!!!! :D :D :D

bearisgray 08-28-2009 04:15 PM

I like the blocks. I think they go well together by themselves.

If your daughter likes the muted colors, the ones you have are kind of bright and not the same "kind" of her colors.

Sort of like putting hot pink with dusty rose. Pretty colors separately, but they don't bring out the best in each other.

How about having your daughter pick out the fabrics she wants and go from there? That way she can't complain about them.

sewjoyce 08-28-2009 04:19 PM

I like the colors and blocks that you've done so far...It's hard to tell from my computer whether the blue matches or just blends....Keep up the good work!

tlrnhi 08-28-2009 05:15 PM

I think it looks great!

Personally, I think it looks great the way you've started out......I'm going to post a picture of the one I made for my DD's wedding.... so you can see all the colours I plunked in on it....and everyone loves it.

PerfectlyCreative 08-28-2009 05:43 PM

I think it looks good ... the one thing I did with my quilt was take a step back and squint at it to see what jumped out at me too much (kinda like squinting at christmas tree lights to make them blury if you know what I mean?) ... I did it in the pic you posted and as others suggested - the light/bright blue is doing that for me. Again - the coloring may be off ... but maybe stick to smaller squares with that blue if you're in love with it?

Hope it helps!

sandpat 08-28-2009 05:44 PM

I think you are on the right track although I would take out the bright blue also..it seems to leap out at you and doesn't really match the pillow (at least on my monitor). Just keep going, it will all fall into place and I don't think it will look jumbled when you get it done.

Thimble...that quilt looks humongous! And beautiful!

Quilt4u 08-28-2009 05:47 PM

Looks great.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 08-28-2009 05:48 PM

I like it! I don't see it as a hodge podge. Of course, I'm a child ofthe 80's, so I probably shouldn't be consulted on color and fashion. We wore parachute pants for pity's sake!

many craft person 08-28-2009 05:49 PM

I think your pattern looks like the pillow - and it looks good - I would be happy to get it myself - you are very inventive to put together a design and all

littlehud 08-28-2009 06:01 PM

I like the colors. Maybe she wants a more structured design. Yours is more scrappy, and I love the scrappy look. All the quilts I have made for my kids were of fabrics they picked out and we worked out a pattern on my EQ6 that they liked so it was alot easier for me. (I hope you get EQ6 for Christmas. It's so much fun to use. )

treasurelady 08-28-2009 06:51 PM

Once you get it put together I think you'll find it looks fine. Many of the best quilt authors say to have one minor fabric that stands out. I think she'll love it.

SharonC 08-28-2009 07:06 PM

Diana - I like what you have (minus the bright blues), it's got a modern flare and I'm sure she'll be thrilled that you designed it AND made it just for her. I'd recommend you keep going and let your instinct lead you. I've seen you other work--and it's great :).

SaraSewing 08-28-2009 07:08 PM

What a cool idea. Find a pillow, then make a quilt to match. I like the way you think. The colors are really pretty.

mimisharon 08-29-2009 06:38 AM

I love it! Hang it on a solid piece of flannel and move them around to suit yourself. You have the right idea and I think it's going wonderfully. Stop second guessing yourself, she'll love it!

Crap? There's no way! You are working your way through the pillows, don't worry about the rugs, live with the pillows.

IMHO,
Sharon

RedGarnet222 08-29-2009 07:18 AM

Hi hon,
If you look close, the colors are all together in the pillows and the rug, kind of like color lines. They change with each row. That is what makes yours different from her pillows and rug.

I love what you are doing here. Great idea !!

Joan 08-29-2009 08:22 AM

Take all of the squares out except the ones with the teal blue. Lay them out and see if you like that combination better.

The teal blue will catch your eye and be the focus point and all of the nice soothing neutrals will support it. I think the blues don't look very harmonious and can't tell you why.

Regardless, I think it will be a beautiful quilt---just simplify the colors.

For what its worth, I also have a daughter who doesn't like tradional quilt designs and just may duplicate your blocks. I bought neutral tans and brown already, too....It's on my "to do" list. I have really been having a hard time deciding what block to make so understand your delimina.

BellaBoo 08-29-2009 08:35 AM

I say go with your gut feeling. I like your colorway the best, it has interest, not so matchy matchy. A fabric piece is to add texture to a room not stand alone as an object. (HGTV anyone?) The pattern is excellent for the non traditional look.

I think it looks awesome. What's not to like? I think the colors (all of them) look great. Who needs a pattern?

Joey

bearisgray 08-29-2009 09:44 AM

The colors of the blocks seem to be picking up the hues of the rug under it??

Maybe take pictures of the blocks using the various suggestions given.

I really think that the layout you have at the beginning is attractive on a stand-alone basis.

MadQuilter 08-29-2009 10:17 AM

I think it is great the way it is and the light blue needs to stay.

MollieSue 08-29-2009 04:45 PM

Thank you, all of you!!! I just got home, been gone all day. AngelFood distribution this morning, then two grandsons birthday parties back to back. I'm going to read through all of these again tomorrow and play around. I'll post some pictures when I get a few more done, without the blues.
I've got to have this one done, plus my step-daughter's (not even started yet) by next Sunday. eeek. So it's been extra stress with this one, feeling like I have no idea what I'm doing with it, and running out of time.
You'll never know how much I appreciate all of your suggestions!! And encouragement!!
Thank you!!! :D :D

I totally agree with Jan:) Other than those two colors I think it looks awesome!

Thank you!!! I am doing as you all suggested, and am feeling much better, much more confident about it!! And I took out all the blues! lol!!!!
Here's a current picture, I still have to play a lot more with placement, but I'm just trying to focus on cranking out the blocks now. They're only 7", and of course I still have to square them all up.
But I think (am hoping!!) it'll have that rich, more modern look, she likes when I'm done. I had orginally seen it in my head done in batiks, but would have been too pricey.
Thank you again, I truly appreciate all of your help!!!
:D

bebe 08-30-2009 09:59 AM

LOOKING GOOD!!!
GLAD TO HAVE BEEN OF SOME HELP :D

amma 08-30-2009 10:04 AM

That looks awesome!!! Very contemporary!!! She is going to love it!!!
I don't think I would do much with borders on it...maybe 1 smaller one and a different color for the binding...keeping it very simple...modern looking....and that should make it finish up quicker, too!!!

lyndawn 08-30-2009 10:38 AM

That looks Great!! She is going to love it! I love it:) The colors are blend together so well. You are doing a fantastic job!

Lynette

mamabird3 08-30-2009 10:54 AM

It is looking really good, I think she will love it!!

bearisgray 08-30-2009 11:14 AM

I like the "regularity" of the two square-three square arrangement - and the apparent "randomness" of the colors.

I'm one of those people that really can't do "true random" or "scrappy" though - I have to work at something that pleases me.

Eddie 08-30-2009 11:14 AM

I think your pattern looks great. In looking at the colors, that bright blue really jumps out, so I think I would lose that particular color. The rest of them look spot on, though, and will make a great looking quilt.

Eddie 08-30-2009 11:15 AM

Oops, I see you already lost the blues! Good choice!
