I have no ideal, I guess they have money to burn...

SharBear 07-07-2011 01:24 PM

someone must think it is but I sure don't! If I'm going to put out $475 plus I want to pick out the fabric myself!

luckylindy333 07-07-2011 01:24 PM

I read the description and some of it is Daisy Kingdom, which is not even that good of fabric!

BigDog 07-07-2011 01:25 PM

I have no idea.

He's got a 100% positive feedback rating so I guess it's true: There is a sucker born every minute.

The word "vintage" gets 'em every time.

Boy ain't that the truth!

ptquilts 07-07-2011 01:29 PM

I once had some vintage 50's-60's fabric, juvenile print with little animals on it, on Ebay. Went for an enormous price, I forget exactly how much, buyer was in Japan. You just never know.

Zhillslady 07-07-2011 01:30 PM

It's a prime example that the value of anything is what someone is willing to pay for it.

mhollifiel 07-07-2011 01:30 PM

Lord have MERCY!! (As my grandmother used to say)

mltquilt 07-07-2011 01:37 PM

Amen to that mhollifiel. Maybe its like that show where people bid on storage lockers without really seeing what is in them. They must see a corner of a "gem" in there somewhere.

PrettyCurious 07-07-2011 01:44 PM

I just got 28 yards of fabric + 2 yards of Pellon for $69

* wonders if I should auction it off, and use the word "vintage" since the selvage on one of the pieces said 2001

Those are the exact words I was thinking!

The fabric brands are sold at Walmart, JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby. I noticed some prints I have, they aren't that vintage!

I noticed that too. I'd hate to see their FB after the buyer gets it.

isnthatodd 07-07-2011 01:56 PM

I think some people just get caught up in the madness.

Ditto. I recognized some of the fabrics from stuff I sewed in the 80s. I think it's just what your title says - a bidding war. Sounds like everyone is getting carried away on this one. I wouldn't pay that much for fabric sight unseen.

MonnaL 07-07-2011 02:28 PM

I had a friend that stumbled upon about 20 1-yard cuts of vintage (authentic) 30s prints. Pristine condition, all colors of the rainbow. It was bringing about $50-$75 a yard, when she put it on ebay, and people were emailing her begging her to sell smaller pieces so they could afford to get in the action. So..she started selling 1/4 cuts. They still went for $25-$30 for a quarter yard. I think she made a couple of thousand on that lot - and she is not even a quilter. It was gorgeous, and I was drooling, but certainly not willing to pay those prices.

And yes.. the Japanese buyers were going crazy over juvenile prints for awhile. And later (not sure if they still are) over the 60s pop fabrics, especially anything with stylized daises on it.

And I did quite well myself selling vintage scraps - mostly from the 40s. One lady bought quite a few of them, and since they were such small pieces I asked her if she was making doll clothes. She wrote me the nicest email telling me that no, not doll clothes. Turns out, she is a children's book illustrator and uses the fabrics as inspiration for her illustrations. Very interesting.

I am sometimes surprised at how much something will sell for, especially when you get one or more buyers with lots of moola and they start a bidding war.

It isn't. But ebay thrives of people "winning" their bids!

I think you're right. They have to "win."

loves_2_quilt 07-07-2011 02:57 PM

Not worth it to me

hobo2000 07-07-2011 02:59 PM

There are 10+ bidders and I would bet most are overseas bidders. This would be a real bargain for them. Vintage means they pay a lesser amount to bring it into their country and most of them are paying $18.00 a yard and up for Walmart quality materials.

the fabric looks interesting, but that is a bit steep for stuff you can't see or touch.

That's about the truth! Much of this stuff screams 1990s, how that can be vintage I'll never know. Not even collector stuff. Very strange.

On one page, I had sewn several projects with all of those fabrics back in 1998-2000. On another page with the red background and tiny yellow flowers, the babysitter made my daughter an outfit out of that 32 years ago, is that "vintage"?

Candace 07-07-2011 04:28 PM

Ouch...

susie-susie-susie 07-07-2011 04:47 PM

I agree, sometimes people get carried away with bidding and winning. Vintage also urges them on. I have had some of those fabrics in my stash and I gave them away!! Guess I need my head examined!!

Holy moly! That sure is something! I too have a couple of prints shown.

HUGE Quilt Quilting Cotton Fabric Lot 60+ Yards Vintage

Ended:

Jul 07, 201119:26:59 PDT

Winning bid:

US $537.34

earthwalker 07-08-2011 12:27 AM

It is not unusual here to pay around $25.00 per metre for good quality fabric. The minimum you can get by with is around $12.95 per metre, unless you really get lucky with a sale table at around $4 to $6.00 per metre. Last week I managed to get some good fabric at $2.00 per fat quarter, but this isn't an everyday thing. I also collect vintage, and I think the term loosely seems to cover anything from the 80's back. Though 1975 back is for purists.

A yard is about 3 inches short of 1 metre - 1 metre is 1.09 yards.

Still, I understand how surprised you are....wish I was:)

Same here, I came across a boatload of feed sack 9 patch blocks that were in pretty rough shape. It made us a small fortune.

Possibly in any other country than the US - it's a 'normal' price...

I certainly would not pay that for it. If I'm paying that much I want to hand pick each and every piece. Not somebody's left overs.

That would cost about $510 over here....

Yooper32 07-08-2011 04:10 AM

Nothing there that I would go "ape" over, I'm thinking.
