Virtual Quilt club - 7/14

1 Attachment(s)
I have been on vacation all week. Doing all kinds of stuff. Seway up a mountain, ziplining (now off my bucket list), Beach, visited Bird in Hand and also Lanchester PA. Beautiful country, couple days at the lake. Repainted my kitchen cabinets.

This morning looks like we finally are going to get some rain...Yah...perfect...I need some quilt time. Who would like to quilt virtually today? I will be finishing putting on binding on a quilted wall hanging. Then I will start a new project. Thinking the Dr Suess Quilt...but that does not have to be completed till Jan so I may change my mind once I am ready to get my new project started.

Here is the wall quilt I need to finish that I started last week

I finished my one grandaughter's quilt yesterday..took forever as I hand quilt...Today I am going to begin the next grandchild's. Took her to pick her fabrics the other day. I have 13, going on 14 grandchildren so far, and have completed quilts for 7 of them so far..Today I want to try to cut and piece the top. It should go quickly since the blocks will be large due to the pattern on the fabric she chose...It has VERY large flowers, so I have to make big blocks so I don't lose her design. The real challenge will be how to quilt it, since I only can hand quilt it..Will be checking in thru the day!! Hope we are all productive!!

I'm hand quilting the Matsuri cotton lawn lap quilt kit I purchased from Connecting Threads early this spring. It is just the right amount of warmth in front of the AC unit that continues to crank away. Could be in the middle 90's here in central NY yet again. I'm using a super thin Pellon cotton bat with it and am able to achieve tiny, tiny stitches for the first time ever. It's going to be the most perfect summer quilt and am so pleased the way it's coming out.

Pat625 07-14-2012 04:36 AM

South P--pics please!! I was looking at the lawn fabrics, and many were concerned about whether they would hold up well..You are the first I heard that has used them..How is it? I really love the colors and prints available...Want to order some!!

Chicca 07-14-2012 04:41 AM

Good Morning! It is 7:35 am here in Grandfalls Texas. After I have a couple cups of coffee, read some of the board and a few other odds and ends; I will be thrilled to join you all in a Retreat day.

I was recently given 3 overflowing 18 gallon totes filled with fabrics from a former quilter who now does not do any. She was holding onto it for her granddaughters who have told her they do not want it. Thrilled is not a significant word, but all I can think of to describe my feelings. Anyhow, I am working on refolding, ironing and putting it away nicely. After, I finish the first tote, though I would really like to cut out a quilt pattern to make for her. Hearts and Gizzards, if I can find it in my books/magazines.

JenelTX 07-14-2012 04:48 AM

I hope to finish free-motion quilting the border of a quilt I'm making for my husband. I'm about halfway through, and it moves fast, so I think I can do it.

Well I finished...My brother stopped by this morning. Loved that he stopped by but glad he left so that I could finish my binding. I tried something different...thought Oh NO but I ended up liking it. I cut my strips to 2 inches instead of 2 1/2. Sew back to front. I am now glad that I did. Since this is a wall quilt I wanted it to have a narrow binding.

I love your circle quilt.

carolaug 07-14-2012 07:02 AM

Aurgh....My husband says..I thought you promised to make peach/blueberry pie...well...I will wip that up while I am thinking of my next project. How are you folks doing??? getting interupted from family members..Oh and it never ended up raining...just clouds and wind and now blue skies...we need the rain.

carolaug 07-14-2012 07:11 AM

Thanks fmhall2 - this would have made a great rug also...I used furniture fabric. I really am pleased on how it come out. I just may need to make another one.

carolaug 07-14-2012 07:14 AM

Here is the Peach-blueberry pie recipe if any one would like to join me and making that too ; ) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/t...ipe/index.html

Chicca 07-14-2012 07:50 AM

Everyone seems to be doing fabulous on their projects! Peach/Blueberry pie sounds delicious, but I have neither so will just have to drool over your recipe until I can get to the store.

Well, I have finished the first tote. I ended up with 34 pieces of fabric ( from 1 yard pieces to 8 yard pieces) plus a half tote filled with bits and pieces. I decided to go ahead and tackle one more of the totes.

I am really excited with all of the varieties of fabric, although 95 % is 100%cotton. Just ooohing and aaaawing, then touching, ironing and trimming to even sizes, folding and putting on a shelf (to later be placed in my stash). Any ways, I am just thoroughly enjoying the whole process and figured today is a great day to do it.

That way, choosing the fabrics to do her quilt in will be that much more challenging, yet exciting!

taimi 07-14-2012 08:06 AM

Ooh count me in today too please, although I am getting a late start in the sewing room. I am working on a fence rail lap quilt for my grandmother. I have noticed over the past few months that my piecing is getting a little sloppier than I like so I am going WAY back to basics on this one. :) Made a lunchmeat/cheese tray lastnight for the family to have for lunch and I might just order in pizza later so I can spend the day in here playing with my fabric toys!

carolaug 07-14-2012 08:14 AM

OK...pie is in the oven...hubby planted the peach seeds...LOL..wonder if they will grow..now back to sewing....I have a bunch of tumblers cut so just may do a scrappy tumbler. I even cleaned the kitchen so hopefully no more interuptions. the house does smell good...

nellybelle 07-14-2012 08:25 AM

think I will join you for the virtual quilting day. I have been getting to do the quilt day tomorrow, but if I work on that today then I can get another part of it ready for tomorrow. I am working ona French Braid quilt. The 1st two parts of it were done, so I am working on three and four. And if I have really good luck I could get started on the separator sections. I will be using Kirsten (my FW), so I am excited about that. Catch up with you later to see what everyone is doing.

Well I was going through my fabric and came upon these..
I forgot all about them. I bought them a year ago in Newbury Ma, by the ocean last vacation. I have a template that I can use to square them up. No idea how I should sew them...thinking maybe different fabric and make sashing on each one. then maybe white around each of the sashings to pull them together. hmmm...hints, ideas?? well off to go cut

Patti25314 07-14-2012 09:28 AM

I'm wondering if you are in the NE near me. It's getting hot and humid. Love your "location".

Chicca 07-14-2012 10:25 AM

Took a break; had lunch, washed dishes, swept and mopped the house and am now sitting at the computer checking on evryones progress. Boy does the pie look scrumptous; can not wait to make one myself.

The butterfly blocks are wonderful. Have a great time deciding exactly what to do. Hee, hee, hee.

I have so many ideas swimming around in my head with all of this new fabric, I know I am not going to sleep well tonight. So far in this tote, I have a panel quilt all planned out. A pile of scraps to add to the growing scrap tote; that will all be cut down into various sized squares when I am completely finished folding. I found the most beautiful light green with white tiny flowers that I think will make a lovely Double or Triple Irish Chain quilt (if I can find the other perfect matches). Plus, I was really running low on solids in my stash and this quilter has given me close to 50 yards of solids and have not gotten through the second tote yet.

I am rambling. Also meant to mention the Circle Quilt is fabulous. I think that would be a great idea to use with scraps or planned fabrics. Continue to have a great time. Check back later.

nellybelle 07-14-2012 10:54 AM

Well, I have sewn 5-12 segments for my braid. Now I starrt with 1 and go through to 12. I'm not a fast sewer and I do pin, pin, pin. If I can get 1-12 done today, I will be ahead for tomorrow's job.
Thant pie looks scrumptious wish I lived closer so I could have a bite. Down to check up on everyone and get a bottle of cold water, warm just doesn't do it for me.

oldcatlady 07-14-2012 11:20 AM

I'm late to the retreat. I spent the morning sending thank you emails and doing feedbacks for all my Boom 7 swap partners. I did a couple of loads of clothes in between.

I still have all my blocks from the swap and some other swaps in their mailing envelopes so I'm going to pull them all out and iron them and start playing. I like to wait until I have all the bookkeeping out of the way so I don't mix up which block came from whom.

Chicca - I just never seem to come across good finds like that. How lucky for you! I bet it is so much fun to see what you pull out next. :)

Carolaug - the pie looks great. It's been so hot here lately I stopped using the stove - I don't have AC. It's been cloudy all day but is suppose to rain this afternoon. I hope so, we really need it. The grass is dead and the flowerbeds are all wilted. Love the circle quilt.

I'm going to go fire up the iron and turn on the fan!

carolaug 07-14-2012 01:26 PM

Well...I am back...hope you have all been making wonderful quilts and bags...I just bought a new livingroom set after going to 4 places...and then back to Berie and Phils - love the new set getting it Sat...Yahoo....totally different then what we have had in the past and best of all made in America...that was the glincher....now to get my self another piece of pie. I did finish cutting my blocks and I have decided to use flower prints around the butterflies and then a white or green border around each block. Happy sewing...

Here is my first block. Thinking a white border may work around this block. The middle is off white..looks she may have used Muslim fabric

carolaug 07-14-2012 02:53 PM

The smallest block she had left no room on the borders...I had to cut them all down to 8 inches. So some of the butterflies will be sewn on, but that is ok...it just looks like they are flying in the flowers.

nellybelle 07-14-2012 03:02 PM

Well, a little after 5pm, in my part of the country, was getting tired and when that comes along it is best that I quit so I don't make a whole bunch of mistakes. Needed to go the grocery store. That is done. So I am going to enjoy the air conditioning.

Chicca 07-14-2012 03:24 PM

Well, I have run out of umphhhhh. Will have to continue tomorrow. Had a great time. These quilt alongs are fabulous for me; I seem to accomplish more than on any other day. Thanks for hosting and everyone else for posting.

taimi 07-14-2012 04:34 PM

I got all my strips cut, got my strip sets sewn and was about to start cutting the sets apart when I got cold (makes no sense it is 100 degrees here) and hubby sent me to bed with a nasty fever. I just woke up, about to go back to bed and see if I can't finish things up tomorrow if I am feeling better.

oldcatlady 07-14-2012 05:08 PM

I'm done for the day. I finished pressing all my swap blocks! Just in time too, it has gotten really muggy and the hot iron was too much. Have a good evening all. :)

carolaug 07-14-2012 06:16 PM

Well I am done...I finished putting the side borders on the block tomorrow I will do the other sides - sashing. so tired...busy, busy day....thank-you all...hope to see you all tomorrow! My last day of my vacation.

Everose 07-14-2012 06:53 PM

Carolaug, that pie looks great. I put the recipe in my favorites so that I can make it soon. I am going to use raspberries instead of the blueberries. Our patch is producing 3 quarts every other day. So eating/freezing/giving away lots.

Just found this thread, but I quilted and put binding on a Christmas throw for my SIL. Will finish it tomorrow and show pictures. I'm quite pleased with it. First time I have ever done a braided border. Now I know I will do more, because I really like the way this one turned out.

See you all tomorrow.
Di

After working a flower bed at church, I had to have a nap. A friend brought me a Singer Futura machine that was her Mothers so I had to piece a quilt top.(I teach quilting at a local Women's shelter so that is what the machine is for) The top is made of 2 1/2" pre printed strips. I did 7"sqs Rail Fence pattern. Hope to get the border on today. This quilt will go to a local hospital.

NCUTE2 07-15-2012 04:52 AM

trying to do a French Braid today. Figured it's better than cleaning and/or cooking!!

Latrinka 07-15-2012 06:00 AM

Pretty wall hanging!

ngale4 07-15-2012 07:34 AM

Set up mynew kenmore machine last night, started sewing after breakfast, hubby came down-could not beleive the machine makes no noise. Have sewn 8 rows of patchwork so far.......thanks for the motivation

Teri D 07-15-2012 08:09 AM

I'm just getting underway but I have an "easy" objective for today: piece the "Modern Dresden" block from the Craftsy BOM class. I'm about 135 miles away from the house containing my sewing room but I can do this today on the trusty Featherweight with fabric scraps and stop putting it off! Thanks for the motivation!

nclauri 07-15-2012 08:23 AM

Hello everyone! I need this virtual quilt day. I will be sandwiching a quilt today so I can start quilting it. I really dread it. The one part of quilting I can do without!
