Virtual Quilting Weekend--10/10 to 10/13

Welcome to the Columbus Day Virtual Quilt Weekend! I'm a little late getting this started this morning, my cats thought I should get up at 4 am to feed them so I slept a little later than planned after that :) For those new to VQW, we quilters get together on this thread over the weekend and share what our goals are for the weekend and what we're working on. If you're like me, you'll probably get some new ideas as if you didn't have enough projects planned to last the rest of your life! Pictures of your projects are always welcomed.

I have about an hour's worth of house chores to do so hope to be in the sewing room by 9. First I need to clear off my sewing table and then I have 6 Halloween wall hangings to finish up. After that, I have a quilt to cut out for my parents Christmas present and hopefully start piecing it today. I also have 2 hand towels to squeeze in somewhere. I would love to have the quilt and towels completed by the end of this weekend. Then all the Christmas presents for family are done and I can go find some gift bags somewhere.

So what are you hoping to get accomplished this weekend?

Raggiemom 10-10-2014 04:07 AM

Oh, and before I forget, I'm planning the next Virtual Quilt Weekend for the weekend of 11/7-11/10. That should be Veterans' Day weekend here in the US.

franc36 10-10-2014 04:19 AM

I will join you this afternoon. Yesterday, I cut out the Craftsy October Mystery quilt. I will be working on it all weekend.

QuiltnNan 10-10-2014 04:42 AM

i'm going to try hard to get lots of sewing in this weekend. the weather is not going to be nice, so staying is in store.

I'm hoping to get some more of my paper pieced Hummer Storm quilt done, although I'm not sure I'll do any today as I'm recovering from the Knit and Stitch show in London yesterday!
Here it is so far:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=494780&stc=1

I've made the blocks, cornerstones and sashing to make it a 4x4 square (it's 3x3 atm), but I haven't joined any of them together yet! Hopefully I'll manage that over this weekend :-)

I look forward to seeing everyone else's progress!

Suzanne57 10-10-2014 04:59 AM

I will be working on my GFG quilt and hopefully some microwave bowls.

Billi 10-10-2014 05:12 AM

Yay I'll be working on catching up with the mystery train ride today I'm 2 stops behind :-0 I want to be ready for tomorrow's clue then I'll be working on that. If I'm successfull I'm going to lay out and work a quilt from the haloween block swap....

Sewnoma 10-10-2014 05:34 AM

Sisty88, that is a beautiful quilt!!

I have to work today and friends coming over in the evening so likely no quilting today for me. Saturday & Sunday, though, I hope to be productive!

I need to bind one quilt, then I have a very simple big-block floral double-sized bed quilt for my MIL up on the wall I'd like to get pieced and off the design wall so I can start cutting and laying out a 30's feedsack-repro quilt for my gran-in-law. (Which will also be very simple and big-block so should go quick.) I also want to start cutting green fabrics for a pair of matching Minecraft Creeper quilts I'm making for my niece & nephew. All of these (except the one that just needs binding) are Christmas gifts - finally getting my start on the season! :)

I also need to whip up a simple patchwork cape for my "The Quilter" superhero costume but not sure if I'll do that this weekend, or next.

It's going to be a busy sewing weekend! :)

quiltingbuddy 10-10-2014 06:27 AM

Can I chime in? I'm excited to sew this weekend because it will be the first dedicated time for quilting I've had since I got my new quilting table (Tailormade Quilter's Vision). I'm almost finished quilting my tumbler (not tumbling blocks) so I hope to get it ready to bind. I also need to finish quilting the border of my roses, roses, roses quilt that has been sitting around for almost a year. And if I can get the jelly roll race 2 quilt's backing ready (not purchased yet) I'll be all caught up with the quilts I'm doing that require machine work. Plus there's always those handwork projects that I keep plugging away at. I'm sure I'll be working on my son's quilt while I watch a race with DH. So many quilts, so little time right?

Sisty88: I just wanted to say WOW how fantastic your quilt is! I love everything about it! Just fabulous!!!
If anyone can tell me how to post from my IPad I'll post pics too but so far I've had no luck with that LoL.

PenniF 10-10-2014 06:32 AM

Hi Heather....Thanks for "organizing" the VQW again. i am SOOOOO in. I have had the week "off" from watching my DGD - and have so much to finish up. But have got to bring some order to my craft/storage room first as i have been pulling fabrics and stacking them all week on a table in my family room. Can't get any more on the table so will have to start over.
Hoping to finish my "November Place mat of the month" for my folks and aunts today. Then on to borders for my DS Christmas quilt...which i home to finish completely before Sunday.

Sisty88 - i confess i have never been a fan of the snails tail/trail - but in this quilt it is really stunning. Hummer Storm is a pattern i will definitely have to put into my book. Love your colors too.

I'm in for a quilting weekend. Got the housework done and except for the cable company coming to install cable and internet this afternoon, the weekend is pretty much free. Switching from a dish tv and verizon internet to cable. They wanted to charge me $1500 to install two years ago when we built and now will do it for free. We are way off the road in woods. I have some cleaning up to do in my sewing room, have 100 blocks (bear paw) done for a quilt and need to get them up on the design board. Been putting this off because I think I have a lot of ironing to do to get the seams to nest plus want to wash a bunch of fat quarters and iron them. Also, have quilts wanted to be quilted. I have more then enough to keep me busy!

Raggiemom 10-10-2014 08:27 AM

I'm glad to see so many are joining me! I didn't get as much time in sewing room as I would have liked this morning as have been on phone with roofers and cable company. But we finally have 2 quotes to replace roof and will make decision hopefully tonight and cable bill has been reduced about $30 a month so did get something accomplished! Back to the sewing room to hopefully finish the Halloween wall hangings.

tucsonquilter 10-10-2014 08:34 AM

I am still working on my king size 1.5" scrappy Christmas quilt. I have just three rows left then I start on the white border. So excited. My goal is to get the top done so I can at least put it on my bed for December and then get it quilted after the holidays. So off to quilting....by the way...love these virtual quilting weekends and really love to see all the items that you all are working on.

joe'smom 10-10-2014 09:31 AM

I will be working on piecing a flannel quilt top and backing for a grandson, quilting my second fmq 'to ruin' quilt (Leah Day suggested it takes about three quilts to get the hang of fmq) and basting my third, hand quilting a quilt for another grandson, cutting a new project, and hand piecing a top with undulating curves (I gave up trying to machine piece it, after much aggravation -- didn't realize how much I would enjoy hand piecing!).

It works best for me to switch off on various tasks, as my back doesn't allow me to stay at one activity for very long.

SewExtremeSeams 10-10-2014 09:52 AM

Hoping to join in on the fun this weekend. I have been babying an extremely swollen joint on my right foot for almost a week now and trying to stay off of it. Meanwhile, I have been washing fabric piles lying here and there around the house, folding and stacking by color. It's so easy to spread out and a pain to gather it all in one place. :D DH built me a cabinet for the hallway to stack my fabric. I will start this weekend by cutting out to sew small quilty things for the bazaar I am doing in November. Then, see how my foot takes to pushing the pedal on the sewing machine.

Doggramma 10-10-2014 10:26 AM

I'm finishing off a pack of Riley Blake FQ's that I bought earlier in the year - same fabrics in different colorways. I've already used the goldish ones and the turquoise ones. Now I'm doing a quilt using the raspberry ones. We may go for apples tomorrow though, so may not get in much sewing tomorrow.

Sisty88 10-10-2014 10:36 AM

I did much better than I thought I would today! The hummer storm is now 4x4! Huzzah!

Now I have to work out if I have enough of the turquoise left to make it 5x5...sadly the turquoise is out of stock everywhere, and I've run out of places to try now :-( I've found the same design in a greeny/teal colour, so will use that around the edge of the turquoise, keeping the dark blue the same. I'm hoping this will look ok, because I would hate to ruin this one now, when it's looking so pretty! If anyone has any better ideas, I'm all ears :-)

judy363905 10-10-2014 11:12 AM

Yeah, just the incentive I need to get in Gear this week..looking forward to finishing a few things :)

Thanks a bunch

joyce888 10-10-2014 11:47 AM

I've got six labels to machine embroidery, twin size quilt to long arm and bind, and last a king size quilt to cut out. Will tackle them in that order.

I have 2 baby girl quilts to finish hand sewing on binding (one is 80% done), machine embroider labels for them and a label for one my sister did, a bunch of flannel FQ to make burp cloths with. Then I can get back to putting borders on my queen-sized batik strip quilt that is for us!

SewExtremeSeams 10-10-2014 01:48 PM

Cute baby blankets Skyangel. They look so soft!

NJ Quilter 10-10-2014 01:49 PM

DH is working till 10PM tonight and most of tomorrow. If I get my butt in gear I should be able to get quite a bit of hand quilting done on a friend's baby quilt. I have another quilt to finish hand quilting but that's just for me so it's been sitting, laughing at me for quite a while now - just not in the mood - and not much to finish that up either. Have to get working on a graduation quilt for a dear friend's daughter as well but no where near getting to that this weekend, unfortunately. I'll settle for getting the bulk of the baby quilt done!

Sync 10-10-2014 02:09 PM

Thanks for this quilting push. Hubby and I just moved into our new home so I have been rather busy with lots non-quilting things. So I'm looking forward to getting back in the quilting saddle. Now just to decide what to start on. I have only 4 more blocks to quilt on a lap quilt for my DD#2 and I should finish the 2 blocks I have cut out and ready to sew of a BOM that I'm soooo behind on. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

Deb watkins 10-10-2014 02:19 PM

I would love to be involved in this. I have been up and or/working from 4am to 4pm every day from Sept 4 till today. Most of my weekends have been dedicated to getting caught up on my sleep. I think that this long weekend will be for sewing.....will let you know what I get done!

So I have taken my DD's lap quilt out and I'm ready to finish the quilting on this one. Hopefully, all the quilting will be done by the end of this VQW. I'll also work on that BOM and maybe I can also cut out some more blocks. Here's the picture of my DD's quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=494833&stc=1

Sync, love your colors!

Well, I finished the Halloween wall hangings, now I just need the quilt hangers to arrive so I can hang them! I cut out and started piecing the blocks for my parents quilt. Hopefully tomorrow I'll finish piecing the top and do the towels. Then Sunday after church, I can quilt the top and bind it and be done. I know--I'm ambitious :) But it's a fairly simple pattern and I'm just going to SITD so...

Here are the wall hangings--I just cut the panels apart and enveloped them so didn't take long.

Sync 10-10-2014 03:16 PM

Thanks Heather. When my daughter picked out this Quiltmaker pattern she insisted that the fish be pink & purple. I think your Halloween panels are adorable.

sewbizgirl 10-10-2014 03:27 PM

I hope to join you! I went fabric shopping today and I'm washing it all right now!

PenniF 10-10-2014 04:23 PM

I did not get much done today. Went to have lunch with a girl who used to work with us and it turned into an almost all afternoon event. Sure was good to see her and catch up !!

Love the colors of your DDs quilt Sync........and those Halloween wall hangings are just too cute Heather....and precious baby quilt Skyangel. I REALLY need to get back to it.

DonnaR 10-10-2014 04:43 PM

I am ready for this weekend. I need to finish longarm quilting my Celtic Solstice from last years Bonnie hunter mystery. I also want to cut out some quilts for a retreat in 2 weeks. I will post my progress.

Belfrybat 10-10-2014 04:49 PM

I've been gone all day to a church meeting, so am getting a late start on this. I'm working on two mystery quilts -- the one here on this board and one at QCA, so I'll be busy with that. But I also want to finish a couple of sewing machine covers I have pieced but not sandwiched or quilted, and to start on some Tiddlywink blocks. Judy showed us a couple of quilts she made of this pattern and I really like it. Oh, I also have a quilt block to make for another board and a mug rug for the current swap. I think I'll be very busy!
RaggieMom -- Thanks for hosting this weekend and for encouraging us to get motivated.

oksewglad 10-10-2014 04:52 PM

Great time to get those Halloween projects done! Lots of neat projects ready to go, too.

Will try to join you as I go in and out--weather's too nice not to get some yardwork done. But my nights are relatively free! Wed night started making some pillowcase dresses for church project to Haiti. Have armholes cut and top casings and hems (if needed) on 10 little dresses. Using the armhole cutouts from larger sizes to make pockets--think I have pockets on half of them. Must make bias tape for armholes.
DD and GD will be here soon. GD stays the weekend--gotta dash.

This afternoon I got a sashing strip sewn to each block on my flannel quilt top, pressed, and cut one fabric for my new project. I quilted myself into a jam on my fmq learning quilt, and then my bobbin ran out, so I left it to deal with tomorrow. I'm now going to hand piece for awhile with an eye on the TV.

First photo shows the blocks I'm hand-piecing using Amy Butler's Gypsy Caravan fabric; second photo shows the blocks for the flannel quilt.

Sisty88, this is absolutely gorgeous!! I could never do such detailed work, but I love the colors you've chosen. I look forward to see this one completed.

Am only hopping on tonight but I did get something started today. I stole minutes throughout the day to iron fabrics to be used in a baby girl quilt. I wanted something very pink because my niece is expecting a girl after FOUR boys. I thought she needed something pink for this little princess. So tomorrow I'll try to get some of the cutting done. I'll be "designing" as I go because I have an idea in my head but haven't put it down on paper yet. I saw on the QB a few weeks ago a border that used HSTs. Will try to imitate that and make it fit around a panel. Hmmm- we'll see.

Wow... that pineapple quilt! What a jaw-dropper.

I'm still pressing all the fabric I washed... from TWO shopping trips.

AngeliaNR 10-10-2014 07:31 PM

Worked on a quilt makeover today. Tomorrow is reserved for working on my mystery quilts. Sunday, who knows? I've got quilting to do, but no space right now to spread out and do it.

SharonTheriault 10-10-2014 08:52 PM

This is my first time joining in on a VQW and I'm excited to see what others are doing. I have been working on a "Welcome" door hanging. It is a kit but is just perfect for our new house in Georgia. Right now it's in a hoop for hand quilting, but I'm not sure that's what I want to do. I might take it out of the hoop and try it on the machine...after some practice sandwiches. I'm trying to get the sewing room in condition to pack up for the move. So looking forward to getting out of the snow.

zozee 10-10-2014 09:03 PM

Finish binding a charity quilt. Then clean up my sewing room before I start quilting a lap quilt.
