Thimblebug and Nammie, your projects are absolutely amazing. Thim, I love the crayons. It is on my to do list.
Nammie, your applique design is fantastic. Did you design it yourself?

grann of 6 02-15-2015 06:09 AM

Good morning everyone. I love what you all are doing. And the patience to hand applique...

My plan for today is to work on the backing for the blue/yellow/white quilt. I don't have enough fabric for the back, so I will make a row of the star blocks and sash and border just like the front, and then insert it into the main fabric backing.

Debbie (applique), LOVE your work! Especially your fish and those HENS! How do you finish the edges on these beautiful pieces? Do you just leave them raw? I've only done a couple of applique pieces and am quite a novice.

jtquilts 02-15-2015 07:17 AM

I haven't looked through all of the projects ya'll are working on but the ones I have seen are wonderful and I hope you accomplish what you have planned!

I have finished a costume for my DGD's birthday. Now I am off to bind a quilt I started awhile back with Mystery Train Ride #3!

I love our virtual quilting weekends!

Sandiet, that's an adorable baby quilt. I love the fabrics you used.

Here is the charity lap throw I quilted yesterday. You might notice the pins around the binding. Still have to machine SITD to tack it down on the back... then it's done!

kristakz 02-15-2015 08:24 AM

Sigh. I got the quilt with the annoying (constant breakage) thread off the longarm this morning. It took twice as long as it should have because of the stupid thread issues. Now I'm off to find a project in my sewing room. Lots of choices (binding, a couple small UFOs that appeared last week, or my current big quilt). I'm sure something will jump out at me :) Love seeing all your projects!

This morning I've been working with my Brother PE 770 doing some embroidering for St. Patrick's Day. I've had this machine a month and a half and this is the first time I've embroidered something with more than one color. Yeah me. I even figured out how to tweak the colors of designs in my software. Here is a picture of the legs of the leprechuan doing a jig that I'm working on right now. I'm embroidering him on a dish towel and the Erin Go Bragh! is embroidered on the opposite side of the same dish towel. This one goes to DD. I'll be sure to share the entire project once it's finished.

Okay, finally finished a decent dish towel and did one more design to add to a birthday present due next week. I thought that little leprechaun would be the death of me. Sixteen color changes and I think it took me about 1.5 hours to get one done. I sure learned a lot about my new embroidery machine today and what not to do. hehehehe

That leprechaun is darling! As well as the bee...

Here is my final finish of the day. I finished piecing this 16-patch lap quilt. Someone gave me tons of strips and a lot of these were in there... Trying to redeem the scrap strips! That's it for today. Tonight after church I will be working on a scarf I'm knitting. No more quilting tonight.

LOTS of Scrappy things going on this weekend...and i'm no different it seems. My cast finally comes off on Thursday, so being right handed i have been VERY restricted in what i can do....but got out the roll of register tape and one of my scrap bags and started stitching. Have 26 strips x about 16" long thus far. (of course they need trimmed but have to wait til i can use my rotary cutter again - after hand therapy) Thanks for sharing all your pictures - as always, they offer so much inspiration. Can't sew tomorrow - am watching the grand-daughters as they are out of school - can't wait to check back in to see what all you've done. Stay safe and warm!!

grmamrtha1 02-15-2015 08:42 PM

PenniF---this is new to me....you sew patches of fabric on to register tape...and then do what with them?

PenniF 02-15-2015 09:04 PM

Hi grmamrtha1....the register tape keeps the strips from going wonky - as they would i'm sure if i tried to simply sew these bits together without it. Once done you can cut them to size and alternate with solids to make perhaps a rail fence quilt...or sew them into longer strips and alternate with a solid or white strip to make a simple scrappy quilt....or around a center solid square...whatever you like. If you Google - register tape scrap quilts - lots of other things come up, but there are more than a few of these types of quilts. Some have been pictured here on the QB in the past.

Love seeing everyone's projects! I've been working on this for about a month, I'm not as prolific as many of you. It's a scrappy irish chain top made with men's shirts and the light contrast is yardage I purchased for this project. I'm so accustom to seeing light squares and the dark nine patches that it's difficult for me to see the light patches as the chain. It's easier to see in pictures though. This will work well for the person that I'm gifting it to, so I'm happy with the outcome.

grann of 6 02-16-2015 03:42 AM

I really like that scrappy Irish chain, very manly looking. I got sidetracked yesterday with various distractions and didn't get much sewing done. Today I am determined to get the backing ready for sandwiching on the long arm. I seem to spend almost as much time on the backings as I do the fronts. Will try to get some pics posted later.

Everyone is getting lots done this weekend. And I love everything you all have done. I don't do appliqué any more, did way too much of that on my kids clothes way back when there was no such thing as fusible backing. Also made enough wedding gowns to satisfy my interest in hand beading and any other handwork.

deedum 02-16-2015 06:06 AM

That baby quilt is just darling!

deedum 02-16-2015 06:08 AM

Your scrappy irish chain top is just beautiful! Just beautiful! You did a fabulous job!

zennia 02-16-2015 06:10 AM

pennycandy i love you irish chain.
Nice projects everyone. I am still working along on my mini pineapple blocks. Just a few more to go. It was a nice sewing week-end.

deedum 02-16-2015 06:11 AM

wow! now that is a real beauty! I stand in Awe!

judy363905 02-16-2015 07:38 AM

Penny really like how the checks and plaids work so well on your Irish Chain quilt. Great job :)

I finished the quilting on a bed runner and added binding, it is already to hand stitch down today ..will also make a label this morning plan to finished today. I really get a bunch of sewing done on these Virtual Quilting weekends ...happy one was started this past weekend. :). Thanks

GrandmaTerry, welcome neighbor! Love your heart pillow. I also own a FW. What year is yours? Mine is 1947.

KenmoreGal2, love your quilt. It is simple but beautiful. Love your totes also.

This is what I've been working on today. I ended up spending most of yesterday moving furniture. I'm trying to replace the carpet in my sewing room, so need to clear it out. With my son home for reading week, it seemed like a good time to move the heavy stuff out. But it sure did make a disaster of my sewing room.

This quilt now has extra borders top and bottom. 1 wide border around the whole thing, and it will be the right size for donation.

Love the scrappy Irish chain, Pennycandy. I definitely see the yellow chains. Anything made with shirts is soooo cozy. My snuggle up quilt for the couch is a shirts quilt.

All done! This quilt is 36x48, and was entirely made with the leftover fabric from another quilt. Sixteen 10" squares, plus some yardage of the white batik.

Now to get started on one of my block of the month projects ...

Penny I love the scrappy Irish chain. You can really see the chain when you look at the picture.

I spent today doing some friendship stars for a charity quilt and I made the first 3 squares of my Dear Jane. I am in a 13 month program that started on Saturday.

Everyone's work looks so good!

I was only able to get one block completed for my sampler but I'm really happy with it in the end. Lots of reverse sewing on this one, but with the snow in Boston it is not worthwhile to go outside.

Raggiemom 02-16-2015 04:07 PM

There are so many beautiful projects on here. Since I was trying to spend more time actually working and less time on the computer, I didn't comment individually. However, I did read all the posts and have enjoyed quilting with all of you this weekend. I completely finished four of the quilts and just have the binding left on the fifth. And I even sandwiched a sixth quilt which wasn't on my list! Looking forward to all the company again next month :)

sewbizgirl 02-16-2015 06:27 PM

Pretty quilt, Rebecca. Great job with all those triangles! They all match and have their pretty points.

Raggiemom, you aren't going to show us pictures of the quilts you finished???? Paleese?

I didn't get nearly enough time this weekend in my sewing room. However, something is better than nothing. I have one spider web block done! whoo hoo! and these embroidery tissue paper rolls. I do enjoy the end results with these and they will go to a bazaar for a charity.
I really enjoy all the post and pictures everyone has shared. This quilting board I think is the best.

zozee 02-16-2015 07:36 PM

Sure am enjoying all these projects. They just make me SMILE to see all the colors and patterns.

I finished my Minecraft quilt last night (finally!). I then started the X quilt blocks for the Color & Design Challenge for February (hosted by playswithcolor). So far 5 out of 9 are pieced, and I'm having a blast.

I plan to snap and show progress pictures tomorrow in the natural light. Of course that means you'll see some natural snow in the background (and the foreground and the sideground...). Ha.

Back again for a moment to see what everyone is doing. I decided to continue the weekend into as much of this week as possible since I am on a roll! Have quite a few pieces stitched (satin stitch) which is good, but found a bunch of pieces in a pile and did them too. So a spider, four work horses and two gingerbread men are also now stitched. Onward while the juices are flowing!

applique 02-17-2015 04:43 AM
applique.... great appliqué designs.... did you make the skateboarder designs yourself or are they clip art or a specific pattern? sorry so many questions but they just look so perfect!
/QUOTE]

They are from a Dover publication of sports. I have all of them stitched but need to make a few more and of course it's time for some baseball figures. Come on spring!

pennycandy 02-17-2015 06:40 AM

Thank you everyone! Seeing pictures of everyone's work pushed me to try something I normally would not have done. Yellow is out of my comfort zone so this was a challenge to work with.

I will be glad to finish these because the colors I was presented are mostly bland colors and the lady just wants a scrappy look. Here is what I have come up with so far.

On the second one I have rearranged the 9 patch blocks so there is a flow in the color scheme. I don't have a picture of the new arrangement yet.

The 3rd one is simply a scrappy of miscellaneous blocks with a heart shaped applique of one of the gowns in the center and I don't have a picture of it.

I don't think I will ever do one of these again for someone else unless it is a gift.

Now that the weekend is over, this is what I accomplished on the three wall hangings. Remember I am working with fusible grid. All three are pressed onto the grid and are waiting to be sewn together.

The long scrappy one will have a fusible heart from one of the gowns in the center of it

Also I took the neckline of one of the gowns and put it on an acid free comic board and framed it

Here is the 2nd one I have chosen to do.
