Virtual Quilting Weekend--2/13-2/16/15

Time for virtual quilting weekend! Do you have a large pile of UFOs you're struggling to shrink? Have you started Christmas presents for this year? (If so, good for you!) Or maybe you just want to make yourself a little something. Whatever you're working on, please join us this weekend as we virtually gather in our quilting rooms and share encouragement, ideas, and pictures.

For first timers, just post on this thread what you're working on this weekend and check out what others are doing. Pictures are welcomed and encouraged.

Just a heads up, next VQW will be Mar 13-Mar 16.

Happy Quilting! Any questions, just ask.

I'm going to finish piecing the back for my Christmas quilt.

This is the top (49 - 10" squares of Christmas fabrics)

and this is the back

leftover charm squares sashed. I just have to finished the silver border to fit it to the top and it will be ready to sandwich.

I'm also going to prepare a piece of wood to paint a barn quilt. I don't have a barn but I want to make a barn quilt just the same.

Oooh...count me in! The last VQW really got me going and inspired. Plus, it was so much fun to see what everyone else was working on.

This month, I'm working on a, "Bright Birch Trees," quilt for my neighbor friend, the logger, who was so kind to help us with our firewood, (among other things,) the first year we were here. He needs a quilt. I'm also starting a pineapple quilt. Plus, I'd like to sandwich a couple of completed quilt tops that I have. Lots to do! Pix to follow soon.

I can stay home the whole day today, and half of tomorrow... so I will be working on finishing up projects. I am still working on the Grand Illusion mystery quilt by Bonnie Hunter-- needing to put the final borders on the center piece. I also have some smaller charity lap quilts to FMQ and bind. And some blocks I 'inherited' to finish for charity quilts.

I just got done organizing and cutting four boxes of scraps and strips that were given to me. It was so much fun, but took me nearly two weeks to tame that pile! Now I can sew again.

Hope to have some photos to share with you by the end of this VQW.

Y'all have fun!
Before I leave to go out of town for the weekend I'm going to try to get a bit more done on my first ever QAYG. Have the blocks done, now doing the sashing, front and back. Next time I think I will add the sashing to the blocks (2 or 3 sides as appropriate) before doing the quilting and see if I like that method better.

Boston1954 02-13-2015 07:08 AM

I am just finishing one with 6 little owls in it. Got the quilting done last night and have started putting on the binding.

luana 02-13-2015 07:28 AM

Spending tomorrow with a group piecing Quilts of Valor. It will be a fun day. I'll show you what we get done.

thimblebug6000 02-13-2015 07:39 AM

Oh good, I really enjoy seeing what everyone is working on. I will piece a few more crayons for a comfort quilt, I was inspired to start one after seeing Tartan's cute quilt top. Mine will be white background as I have a white backing with crayons printed on it. Will try to sew after aquafit and a teensy bit of housework later today :D

I'm working on a couple of things this weekend. I'd like to FMQ this top and bind it. It's for a charity.

I'd also like to finish these tote bags. I'll be giving one to my son's friend and the other to a lady who helps my parents. Right now they have been FMQ'd. I need to sew them into bags, add flat bottoms, make and add handles and then put a binding on the top.

SewExtremeSeams 02-13-2015 09:10 AM

Oh, yipppeee, I am headed to my sewing room as soon as I am done on QB!

Jeanne S 02-13-2015 10:13 AM

Count me in! I am trying to finish the quilting and binding on a boy quilt for my grandson. Will post picture soon!

I've got three projects out on the tables this AM. First is the, "Bright Birch Trees," pattern. by Amanda Jean Nyberg. She did her quilt in bright, fruity popsicle colors, which I love, but this quilt is for a man, so I'm going for blues, greens, browns against a cream background. I don't know what my backing will be yet.

Next, I'm getting preparing the backing for my scrappy camp quilt that I was working on last weekend. I decided to go with a red/green plaid backing and a scrappy binding. I'm going to tie this quilt with lots of red strings. Hopefully, I can get this sandwiched this weekend.

Last, I'm starting a new quilt...a pineapple quilt. I've picked out the colors and that's about as far as I've gotten on it. I'm going with reds, aquas, browns and various shades of white and creams. I think this is going to be a paper foundation project. I love sewing on the paper and hate tearing it off.

Now, to go see what everyone else is up to! :)

Working on thinning out my scraps (hahaha). Bonnie Hunter's Star Struck

Belfrybat 02-13-2015 11:13 AM

I'm working on three different block swaps on three different boards and have to have them done this weekend since I'm leaving later in the week for a quilting retreat. I'll post pics as I go along. If I have time (hah!) I'll finish the sashing for the last Mystery Train ride. I had planned on getting it done last weekend, but life took over.

kristakz 02-13-2015 11:34 AM

Count me in! I'm working today (boo). And out all day tomorrow. But Sunday and Monday are Mine, all Mine! So a-quilting I will go :) I have binding for a bunch of projects that need to be finished - I think I'll make that job 1. Some small ones (placemats & quilties) that I want to finish for guild next month. And 2 lap quilts that are ready for binding so they can get the heck off the UFO list. Then, we'll see where the weekend takes me. Longarm quilting 2 customer quilts, finishing (actually re-doing) a backing for a newly completed top, or working on some of my block of the month projects which have been falling behind.

franc36 02-13-2015 11:52 AM

Because of the extreme cold weather here this weekend, I plan to stay inside and spend the weekend quilting. I am starting the Orange Slice quilt that Jenny Doan demonstrated last Friday and I need to press a couple of tops and backings to get them ready for the LAQ. I am excited to have an entire weekend to work on quilting.

quilt addict 02-13-2015 12:03 PM

I will be sewing away from home so will not have computer access. I plan to work on my BOOM blocks and finish project from Norah McMeeking workshop I attended on Wednesday. I am going up to stay at a condo at Big Bear with a friend. I may go home and take my Mystery Train #8 blocks off the design wall and take them also. She rolls her eyes when she sees how many bags I bring.

Here's how far I am with the crayons so far... they look a little drunk but that's because they're just attached to a sheet that's on a curtain rod.

Very nice scrappies everyone, I guess we're all in the same place trying to use more of what we have before adding to the stash! :D

Nammie to 7 02-13-2015 01:48 PM

I'm in!! Finally finished the 25 applique blocks, still need to do the sashing and borders. But this weekend I'm going to work on quilting my pink striped quilt. Will post a picture on Sunday!

Nammie are you doing hand or machine appliqué blocks?

Rebecca_S 02-13-2015 03:50 PM

I'm working on a sampler quilt and hope to get one, maybe 2 blocks completed before the sewing room gets turned back into the dining room when we have friends over for dinner Sunday.
We will be snowed in again Saturday night into Sunday and I have off work Monday, so I hope to get a lot done.

Raggiemom 02-13-2015 03:57 PM

Looks like there is a lot getting accomplished today :) I finished two of the five quilts on my list for the weekend and have two more sandwiched. I'm taking an English Paper Piecing class tomorrow half of the day so won't get to work on my projects until late afternoon. I hope to finish one of the quilts tomorrow and then sandwich the fifth one. I went to Joann's this morning to use my 20% coupon, picked up a couple Sesame Street backings and fabric for a teddy bear wall hanging. Plus I had to buy another needle threader as I can't find mine (again!). I don't understand how I keep misplacing it, it's not like it's tiny. :)

zozee 02-13-2015 04:00 PM

I am DETERMINED to finish a Minecraft quilt for charity. Just have the binding left.

This is the perfect weekend to hole up in my sewing room since my husband and son are going away for two days to celebrate our son's birthday. Heaven help me, he turns 13 tomorrow!

deedum 02-13-2015 04:04 PM

I plan to work in my sewing room most of the weekend so I hope to join you. We will have to see what I am going to work on. I got a baby quilt top that is waiting to be finished. Perhaps my King size quilt top I could get it sandwiched and ready to machine quilt ( I quilt my own). Maybe work on my strip lap quilt for my dear friend. That is just a few of my things I started. I am kinda hooked a little bit on embrodiery also. So many projects to get done. It is so cold here, so this would be a great weekend to stay in and quilt. I may have to hide from everyone though.

donac 02-13-2015 05:12 PM

I have my first DearJane class tomorrow. I need to get some sewing done for myself. It is my last free weekend before I get really involved in the costumes for the local high school production of Annie that is 4 weeks away.

kristakz 02-13-2015 05:14 PM

I got 1/2 of a quilt done on my longarm, with the most frustrating thread :( I really should toss out all those spools and call it a loss. now I'm off to pull out the backing for my recent quilt and see if I can adjust it to make it a bit more pleasing to my eye.

judy363905 02-13-2015 05:21 PM

My plans are to finish the quilting on a bed runner and maybe even attach the first sewing of the binding, I will hand finish binding on the back. Opps and make the label also it is for a wedding gift. :) I think should keep me busy

I finished the back to the Christmas quilt tonight. I don't have the batting for this quilt (I ordered it today), so I'm putting this quilt to the side and I'll work on my barn quilt tomorrow and some machine embroidery. I'm also going to JA tomorrow to get some vinyl for pouches. Fun. See you tomorrow.

They are beautiful. Besides, drunk crayons are not necessarily a bad thing.!

kyquiltlover1942 02-14-2015 04:52 AM

I still can not get a pic to post, but I will be finishing up a "golf" themed comfort quilt for a neighbor who will be starting on kidney treatments soon. Hope to get the top done today. The designing is finished unless I change my mind again

jmoore 02-14-2015 04:53 AM

We are expecting another 20 inches of snow beginning midnight tonight into Monday so I'll have no excuse to get a couple of UFOs done. I am in the middle of FMQing a lap quilt which is sprawled out over my dining room table. Once that is finished, I need to sandwich a t-shirt quilt. I'm not sure if I should tie it or quilt it... any suggestions?

BerninaGirl 02-14-2015 04:59 AM

Oh I need one of these weekend.

I am working on a scrappy pineapple and Rough Terrain by Frivolous Necessity.

Will try posting a picture later this weekend.

elly66 02-14-2015 05:18 AM

I'll be working on my third bargello in a row (one for each grown son) and I seem to be dragging my heels a bit. Definitely think that when this one is done, I'll take a break from them and sew something different. That is if I don't start something else before then. :D

ManiacQuilter2 02-14-2015 05:24 AM

TRYING to piece some backing for charity quilts since a friend found a newbie LAQ to practice on these charity quilts otherwise they won't get finished.

I am going to be working on three wall hangings (using the 2" fusible grid) using nightgowns and pillow cases from a woman who has passed. I will be glad to finish these because the colors I was presented are mostly bland colors and the lady just wants a scrappy look. Here is what I have come up with so far.

On the second one I have rearranged the 9 patch blocks so there is a flow in the color scheme. I don't have a picture of the new arrangement yet.

The 3rd one is simply a scrappy of miscellaneous blocks with a heart shaped applique of one of the gowns in the center and I don't have a picture of it.

I don't think I will ever do one of these again for someone else unless it is a gift.

tropit 02-14-2015 06:01 AM

I'm trying to use up my scraps, but I just placed an order for more fabric to add to my stash. Am I bad?

~ Cindy

grann of 6 02-14-2015 06:10 AM

I will join in too. I am going to put the borders on a blue/yellow/white quilt for myself. It is a gift to myself for perservering through this whole BC thing, and having the last radiation treatment yesterday. The fabric is Summer Breeze II in jelly roll form. The pattern is Jenny Doan's Jelly Roll stars. I added sashing and cornerstones so it would be a generous queen size. I'll post a pic from the other computer.
