Virtual Quilting Weekend--7/3-7/5
Welcome to the Fourth of July Virtual Quilting Weekend. I hope many are able to join us this weekend, come and go as fits your schedule. If you're new to the idea, we "virtually" quilt together this weekend and post pictures and share what we're working on this weekend. I will be working on various UFOs over the weekend. Hopefully at least a couple will get done! :)
|
Yay! It's not a long weekend here (Canada), but I'm going to try to join in anyway. I have a mystery quilt to finish up, and hopefully get started on all the kits I picked up for the Row-by-Row Experience this past weekend.

The perfect weekend to start working on my red/white/blue quilts. I'm going to bounce between cutting squares for a 2 1/2" pattern quilt, and start sewing together 1.5" squares for another.
|
I'm off for the next 4 days. I have a sick cat so I'm not going anywhere. I will be splitting my time working in the yard and in the house. I was hoping you were having a virtual weekend this holiday. :)
|
Going to doing more pping blocks for ongoing project.

I don't know if I will get a chance to work on this one (I have family in for the weekend) but I'm currently working on a disappearing hourglass quilt top in black and white. Happy Independence Day!

I will be working on some more Bible bags. I just printed a PP pattern of Ocean waves and drew a full scale pattern of Interlocking squares. Going to try a making a miniaturized pattern of Falling charms so that the finished square will be 3". Happy and safe fourth of July for all of my fellow American quilters.
|
I am making a quilt for my mom's 80th birthday party at the end of the month. I need to get it done this weekend so I can send it to the LAQ. It usually helps me to stay with something if I know others are out there sewing along with me, so this VQW is perfectly timed!
|
This is a FIRST for me, I've never done a Virtual Sew-A-Long before. My first act was to join two Halloween Block SWAPS that have just been forming up here at Quilting Board. One is a Witchy Sunbonnet Sue. and the other is Assorted Halloween Blocks. I'll be checking in on you-all, inbetween Gardening and going to the Fresh_on_FRIDAY Farmers Market here in town. Oh, yes, and picking Red Raspberries. I'll post a photo of some Halloween fabrics, as an encouragement for any of out QB friends who want to join the SWAPS.

I've been a busy bee today! I quilted my bargello for my parents. It's a secret make as I've only been working on it while they've been away, so they have no idea it's been made. I didn't expect to get it done so quickly as I have 9 days before they return home. Now just to get the binding done!
I've also had a play with the twister ruler I got for my birthday. I'm not sure if this will be one block of many, or if it will just become a wall hanging, but I'm pleased with how it looks! I did find it a bit of a wasteful technique though! (For some reason I can't add the picture of the bargello, but I'll work on it and try to get one posted!) |
I am happy to join, I plan to cut out a quilt for my sister Anniversay in September and work on a few Quiltmaker's Bitty blocks for a small row quilt. Sounds like fu. Will be looking forward to everyone's progress. happy 4th

Sisty88: Your quilt is pretty. I like the way the colors look like they glow!

There! The computer managed what the phone and tablet couldn't! One quilted bargello, just needing to be trimmed and binding added! Apologies for the little doggy bottom in the corner, he was obviously finished inspecting the quilt! |
Just starting on a new quilt for my "new home". Can do only a couple hours at a time because these old eyes get very tired. Hope everyone is very productive!

Sisty88 Love the Bargello, never tried one yet but love to look at them, your parents will love it. My weekend started today since the office is closed. But had to run to the glass shop to pick up supplies for some commission pieces I received yesterday. So this weekend will be a stay at home and enjoy myself, have to do some work on my GFG and need to start on the windows. We also have a gallon of cherry wine that is ready to put into bottles. Love long weekends!
This is about half done now. I figure I am about 4 months ahead of where I thought I would be. Thanks to Virtual quilting weekends. |

Well, I've had a productive day. I finished two wall hangings, started piecing a large wall hanging, and cut out the pieces for a table runner. Now it's time for the Yankees!
|
I just love everyone's projects! I doubt I'll be able to do any sewing this long weekend (gosh darn it) but I have an idea for a quilted purse pattern, if it pans out I'll post it in Tutorials once it's ready.
|
Very nice Heather, great border on your wall hanging... I finished cutting for today.. Still have sashing to cut...3 yard piece. This is an experiment as I have never before cut all the pieces before I begin to sew..hope it works well :)

I have completed 4 of the blocks for my burgoyne surrounded today, hope to get a lot done tomorrow before the fireworks! All the components were made as leaders/enders, makes putting the final block together go much faster.
|
I am working on a request for a picnic blanket. Not sure exactly what she wanted so I found some fabric with watermelons. I will make a big carpenter star and back it with that waterproof fabric. I hope it turns out ok
|
Rebecca, I like I love this. It's so pretty. I like all the solids.
|
I plan on re-leveling my long arm frame and getting some quilting done. I moved it forward about five inches when I put the two industrial machines along the wall behind it - and that was a while ago.
Two weekends ago DH and I got the ProStitcher installed, so it's time to get to using it. |

I'm sorting through a donation to my church group. There are lots of
1 1/2" strips that were in bags by color. I found 9 cardboard boxes at a thrift store that measure about 20 by 13 by 3 for 1 dollar a piece and I'm putting the strips in those by color groups. There are also squares and other strip sizes in the bags and boxes. Connie |
Yesterday (Friday) I sat the art gallery. It's usually slow so they encourage taking along something to work on. I've been working on a long term project of simple log cabin quilts. Got the first 2 rounds attached for 24 blocks. I'll get them together today and post a picture.
What settings do you like for log cabin quilts from simple blocks? |
This will be the first time I have participated in a weekend...going to try to quilt at least one of the 5 i have ready. Will be checking back to see how everyone is progressing...as i know i will be slow at this.

Wow, I just love what everyone is working on! Beautiful all of them!
I am taking a class next weekend from Victoria Findlay Wolfe. Yesterday I watched my 6mo grandson so while he napped I organized the scrap bag for that. Today I want to get back on the SAS. All the purple band pieces are cut out, so it will just be a piecing marathon as there are 30 purple diamonds in this band. |
Spent yesterday cutting Sew Batik fabric into fat quarters for the shop. But today and part of tomorrow I get to play. Making the fried egg potholders for the shop today... need a dozen!
|
Got the bargello trimmed and attached the binding to the front, and am now hand stitching the back down. Usually I just machine stitch the binding so this seems like it's going to take forever! But it'll be worth it to have a nice finish, as I find machining the binding to be very hit or miss! I'm gonna have to get a wiggle on though because my mum texted me today to say they might be coming home early as she's got shingles, so isn't really enjoying her holiday. My poor mum! Fingers crossed I can get it finished in time as hopefully it will cheer her up a bit!
Some lovely projects so far! And thanks for all the lovely comments on my makes :-) That storm at sea is looking fantastic! I'm super envious of the colour progression, I think that's something I'll never be able to wrap my head around! |
Spent a few hours weeding in the garden before the sun got high - and DH and I just finished getting the long arm frame leveled. Since I was the one crawling around on the floor, I'm ready to go sew for a while and then get back to mounting a quilt.
Fay - I really like your SAS - make me want to jump in and get started on one. I've got the pattern, but I've seen so many versions of it I love, not sure where to go with it. |
I am creating a West Va quilt for Christmas. I like doing my own thing and no 2 quilts alike. Kind of designing as I go. Will post the project as it develops.
|
Fay, your Storm at Sea is an inspiration...great fabric choices. I started one 7 - 8 years ago..would you believe it was a One Day class ... 6 hours... No wonder I did not follow thru...it will be in 2016 UFO list. I did not have room on my 2015 twelve project list. If anyone is doing the McCalls UFO challenge they have posted project number early this month, they did not wait until Monday as usually done. Happy sewing all and Happy 4th. :)

Well so far today I have slept in, then swapped the I Spy swap and got all the packages labeled and ready to ship back to the swappers who 'played'. Then I baked some chocolate chip and pecan cookies for dh and I.
The weather has just become "indoor weather" here.... coming down in BUCKETS outside. I feel sorry for the family picnics that are going to be washed out. Time to go sew! I need to catch up with you all. I'll work on my mini quilt for the mini quilt swap, and some charity projects-- bags and crib quilts for Sadie's Dream. Will check in to see everyone's progress later. |
I'm giving up on my 12" compass star for now. I ripped off all the secondary points, re cut them very carefully and started putting them back on, and having problems. I think I did not get my inner seams wide enough so the center is too big for the outer points. I know I sew an extra skimpy 1/4", and I was being super extra careful to be exact, which would result in an even skimpy 1/4" seam.
I've been doing a lot of paper piecing recently, I think it's time to do something that does not require so much attention to detail. I think I'll go do some strip piecing until my eyes get uncrossed! |
