Virtual quilting weekend 9/5-9/8/20

Good morning! Welcome to a bonus VQW. What are your plans this weekend? I will be popping in and out this weekend. My husband and I are hoping to do some small house repairs but I also have quilting to do. I hope to finish stitching a hanging sleeve and start cutting EPP for our guild paint chip challenge. And my ufo this month is an appliqué project. It would be awesome to get the shapes traced.

i hope this is a productive weekend for us! 🙂

rryder 09-04-2020 03:41 AM

Thanks for hosting, Heather! I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on.

I’m still trying to finish Big Butterfly. I took out some quilting that I did early on to stabilize it while doing the thread painting, have some more to take out, then the final quilting to do on it. I also have two quilts that need hanging sleeves and labels. And, my scrap bucket is overflowing, so I need to go through that and sort things out.

I've got another day helping DH on a roofing project, and then hope I'll have a three day weekend to sew! I want to finish the emboridery on the Round Robbin quilt top, not sure what I'll do other than that. Maybe work on a UFO - I've got one that is a lot of mindless sewing so that would be good to do while babysitting the embroidery machine.

tallchick 09-04-2020 04:24 AM

Thanks for hosting again! Last weekend I started my first new project this year, hoping to get some machine time in on an extremely frustrating quilt, in for a penny in for a pound!! I hope to make some excellent progress on it so I can be done with it. I always look forward to seeing what everyone is working on, hopefully I will have something to share by the end of the VQW.

GingerK 09-04-2020 04:34 AM

Thanks for hosting Raggiemom. I desperately need to finish an oversized queen string top. It is going to be a Christmas present for DD and SIL. I have the last 4 rows sewn, and just need to put it all together. I also have some panels for donation quilts, that need to be blocked into shape and bordered. And my head is full of ideas for oldest DGD's Christmas quilt. I finished youngest DGD's last week. DH has yard work and supper will be leftovers so I just might get most of the day to sew.

Good morning Heather and all the other lovely quilters out there.

My goals this weekend, to complete several projects that only need a few things done to them to complete them. 1) put black binding on a fall quilt; 2) put binding on A project Linus quilt; 3). Sew together 3 project Linus tops; 4). Quilt a pink and black hearts for Project Linus. 5) quilt a QOV top on my long arm (just an ETE pattern. 6) Finish 12 blocks on my (either it’s call 100 block challenge or 15 day challenge?) and then square and sew together. And maybe get it quilted. 7) cut out 16 - 10 blocks to add to 45 blocks to make a very dark brown top. The guy wanted it that way. So that’s what I’m doing. If I get over 1/2 of these items completed I will be happy.

I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks for hosting again, Heather!

I will be working on my Harmony quilt top. It is a pattern by GE Designs and was a one day Sew Along in August.

i look forward to the conversations and pictures.

Happy sewing!

Hello VQW friends! I have lots of things to work on this weekend. There's Wonky Wishes just back from the longarmer waiting for binding. I have dived into making the Jane Stickle quilt and am really enjoying making those blocks and triangles. Last night I spray basted a lap quilt for a local women's shelter, so it needs quilting.
Looking forward to seeing our progress!

Iceblossom 09-04-2020 06:03 AM

How lovely to be with you all again this weekend.

I'm about to turn on the music and put the last four edges around my current round robin. I've been going back and forth, do I really finish this with a long .5" finished edge as designed? I chickened out and am going to cut the edges at 2" instead of 1" to allow the next person to be able to have some adjustment for the size of their round. As I say, you can cut down but you can't cut up. Now that I've committed to my course of action, it won't take long.

After that I'm ready to get out my Frolic UFO. So far I've been able to find the mistake, make the missing pieces, and each block has all the sub-units combined into a baggie. Still a lot involved in putting the sub-units together into the blocks but I consider this the fun stage, all the hard work pieces starting to form the design.

This weekend is my actual birthday, I've never been really big on birthdays and with Labor Day I always had a holiday/day off so close enough. Usually not even a card at this point but we'll go out for a nicer than usual dinner. Since I like to plan ahead, a few years ago (57) I announced that in 2020 I'd be 60 and I expected at least a card! We aren't leaving until mid-month but my husband has planned a trip, yes we are going to travel during the plague. For the most part we will be self-contained driving and decided that small owner operated AirBnBs were the best option for us in many ways. We'll be a week on the road and a week self quarantined after that.

I will be going out on my actual birthday to one of our favorite places, but it is really that we are taking a friend of his from work out. He's moving out of the area, back home to Wisconsin. It's how the timing worked out and I am happy to share. I'm starting to wonder about my husband, he doesn't make many friends and within 2 years they all move far, far away....

Will enjoy doing the satin stitching around the Sept. penguin BOM between a few errands....... I also decided yesterday I would like to get my tote of scraps out of the tote and into a drawer, so will see if I can find places for everything else that is already in that drawer before I get too excited. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Working on this scrappy using up a lot of donated 2 1/2 inch blocks. It has not been a quick one to compete. It has been fun though.

beckyw 09-04-2020 07:42 AM

I'm in for the weekend. I have a bin of scraps that need something done with them.

tropit 09-04-2020 08:01 AM

Count me in! So many projects... I have way too many irons in the fire. This weekend, I think that I'll work on piecing together an, "elf," pillow top, start arranging my kaleidoscope quilt pieces and try to finish up a very early quilt that I did years ago. The quilting is terrible, but I'm going to finish it anyway.

Happy Birthday IceBlossom!

QuiltingVagabond 09-04-2020 09:03 AM

Jeanie, that is a really cute top! I have made one block this morning for my Jane Stickle quilt. I just love paper piecing and learning to love applique (maybe LOL). I'll take pictures for to post later.

Iceblossom 09-04-2020 09:16 AM

Coffee break! Time to pack up the round robin and send it on the next stage of the journey. Before this came to me I was pretty convinced I was going to set it on point with bright medium blues and red and pops of yellow. Then in the center there is a little boat, with my hidden messages in fabric I could not set it sailing forever on stormy seas and had to take away the on-point idea and come up with a new concept.

Looking at what had been done before me, I decided on "soft but pointy" and made a wreath of leaves to circle the dresden "sun" flowers. I debated about switching the colors to green, but in that center there is a narrow band of green with more traditional fabrics on either side, and so that was the way I went.

This is the incentive I need to finish this Queen Size Drunkard's Path that I have been working on. I only have the binding to do. I can sit on the bed and finish the hand stitching on it. I have 2 sides to sew onto the quilt and then the rest is hand stitching. I figure I should be able to finish it with this longer weekend! Wish me well.

Irishrose2 09-04-2020 10:49 AM

I'm in. Finished my patriotic quilt just in time to find out a grandson who was in line for a wedding quilt is moving to Japan in October. He and new wife got moved up on the list so I don't have to pay postage. Pulled out a UFO - may not be exactly what I would have chosen, but it will work. So I have a head start, but still a long way to go.

Kitsie 09-04-2020 10:57 AM

I have spent the last week making vinyl covers for the shafts of a horse drawn carriage! What a work out!! Especially since I have no way of making the tube and turning it inside out! So I'm very glad its done and happily received! Now to get back to more 6" blocks for Community quilts!

cherrybsixty 09-04-2020 11:50 AM

I see everyone is getting their workout and setting their plans in place, now I should do the same. Thank you Heather for hosting another great VQW and especially this holiday weekend. So hopefully everyone plans are to enjoy this VQW and their holiday weekend.

I plan to work on my sewing machine cabinet that got a little damage on the way to Georgia and then maybe some sewing, first things first

Everyone stay safe and enjoy yourselves

Jeanie, that's beautiful! So colorful!

I have yet to get started today, but I'm excited to see what everyone else is doing. I love these weekends!

Thanks for hosting, Heather. I did get started midday on my goal to complete the big blocks and string pieced border of Jamestown Landing by Bonnie Hunter. Attached is my progress today. I won't get much done tomorrow but Sunday and Monday are both days of stitch, trim and then web those blocks. My leader ender project are scrappy, brighter blocks made using Karen Montgomery's Crazier Eight from Creative Grids. A dear friend sent me the set along with a booklet and two patterns by Karen.

beckyw 09-04-2020 01:42 PM

Made three masks today. So have got a start, I'm glad that so many are joining in this weekend.

Fabric Galore 09-04-2020 02:38 PM

I hope to finish a quilt that I am doing big stitch hand quilting with pearl cotton #8. This is a first for me and I am really enjoying it compared to traditional hand quilting. I also have some gardening work that needs to be done but I'm so glad to be a part of this virtual quilting weekend.

Thank you for hosting, Raggiemom.

I'll be in and out myself as well this weekend, we had an unfortunate problem crop up earlier in the week, we found a couple of brown recluse in the house near where my dogs sleep and I have been bugging out (not to coin a pun) ever since and cleaning up a storm. Even broke out my steam cleaner, everything that is in the house is getting a good steam cleaning, bought two new microfiber dusters, a new HEPA filter for my vacuum, nothing is safe until I know there's nothing left in the house but me, my fiance and my four-legged kids. By the time I'm done with this place, it'll be cleaner than its ever been. The Great Purge of 2020 has begun and not a moment too soon with the flu season upon us.

If I can squeeze it in, I'm going to get my sister's hand dyed fabrics for her DWR hand washed this weekend, I attached a picture so everyone can see the colors I chose. One ring will be the orange, another ring will be the sage, the end pieces are the blue and the Muslin and the background is the Muslin.

I was really hoping that I would start piecing it this weekend, I thought what a perfect way to start a new quilt than a VQW but those spiders just turned everything upside down. But I'd rather deal with the cleaning and know I don't have any creepy crawlies in my house while I'm piecing her quilt.

Raggiemom 09-04-2020 03:29 PM

You are all so welcome!

Happy birthday Iceblossom!

We got a few things done today. And I stitched down half of a hanging sleeve. Tomorrow morning I need to pick up a couple things at the quilt shop and will meet a friend for a few minutes. Check back in later 🙂

Quiltah Mama 09-04-2020 04:08 PM

I always look forward to these VQW's, even when I am not able to participate, but this weekend I'm in.😁 Going to work on fall table runners, afternoons mostly, since it's firewood season 🤪. Hopefully it will all be in this weekend.
Thank you Raggiemom for hosting. Looks like lots of sewing machines will be busy this weekend by what I read, yah..... Enjoy everyone.

thimblebug6000 09-04-2020 04:29 PM

I managed to empty that particular tote of scraps into a drawer...yay! And did get the penguin Sept block satin stitched....can't do links right now..but you can check in on Main and then the 2020 Penguin thread....
Thanks for all the virtual posts....gives me a lift for sure!

giquilt 09-04-2020 05:36 PM

Have not jumped on board for along time. I am sewing this weekend on Quilter’s Cottage and Bringing Home the Trees.
Will post when I finish a block!

Sync 09-04-2020 07:54 PM

Thanks for hosting Raggiemom. I have planned a nice quiet 3 day weekend of sewing. This weekend I want to work on my hubby’s quilt, have to finish the quilting on it. And there are a couple of other projects that need my attention.

petthefabric 09-04-2020 08:49 PM

I'm in. Did the BOTW. Then while quilting, the LA acted up. So I've been ripping, quilting and did the binding. It's now ready to finish the quilting.

One cuddle quilt needs a label.

Tomorrow the LQS is having a sale and I need a back. Been looking in lots of places so this won't be a whim. Planned purchase. Since I'll be in town, all the cuddle quilts will go to the organizer, 9 Q's out of here and 9 pillow cases.

Hopefully I'll find a back so I can finish that project.

After that, who knows.

WMUTeach 09-05-2020 03:26 AM

I could not find this thread yesterday, but I started any way. Here is my list for this week-end:

1. Finish the Chemo Pouches for my local hospital
2. Created the pieces for the Ups and Downs quilt
3. Finish the blocks and complete the top for the Ups and Downs quilt
4. Take down the summer decorations in my home and put up the fall decorations.

Items 1 & 2 are finished and today will be a non-sewing day. Sunday evening and Monday are dedicated to items 4 & 5.

Thanks for this thread. I so enjoy having a plan to accomplish tasks and the bonus is all of the finishes and photos. Looking forward to lots of photos. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

Karamarie 09-05-2020 04:26 AM

Sounds like a lot of projects being worked on. I am slowly working on a cardinal wall hanging. Also make masks as grandkids will need more than 1 once school starts.

Sew in the morning, beach in the afternoon, usually. Because the holiday makes beach crowded, I'll have to switch and go in the morning. Surf's up. Then I'll be cutting the additional 96 pieces of blue jeans for finishing my first attempt at DP. Haven't been able to stack the fabric, so one at a time. Little bit tedious. Intermittently quilting "Beach is My Happy Place" quilt.

Panchita 09-05-2020 04:53 AM

Some great projects underway - I'm particularly taken with the scrappy by TaughtByGrandma.

Happy Birthday Iceblossom, and good luck with the de-spider-ing Railroadersbrat (rather you than me!)

I'm working on my stars sampler UFO (started 2011, lol), which is still at 'piecing the blocks' stage, so a while to go. I've decided to make it lap quilt size, and am trying to balance my fabrics in the blocks (some blocks are 'bolder' than others, so trying to disperse those evenly to give a pleasing look without have to remake everything!!). Its not from a formal pattern, so I can play as I like.

I'd also like to get at least a start on the latest Penguins block from the Pumpkin Patch BOM.

Happy Sewing Everyone!

tropit 09-05-2020 06:22 AM

I did not get anything done yesterday. :( The skies were clear and the air was cool for the first time in weeks, so I went for a hike with the dogs and then came home and got sucked into a Netflix show, ("The Night Of." I love John Turturro.) It was a wonderful day, but not a productive one. Maybe I just needed that.

Today, I'm doing a quick town run and then plan to work on my, "Elf," pillow this afternoon. I'm taking a block from Elizabeth Hartman's, "Norm & Nanette," pattern and adding side panels to make a pillow top. I already made her Reindeer pillow top a couple of years ago, so this will be an addition to it for my holiday cabin decor.

I'm also learning to use EQ8 this morning. Yes! I bought it and I'm so excited! My first project is a Santa's Belt pillow pattern. I've seen various versions of this online and a couple of patterns, but it's a pretty simple design, so it will be my first project on EQ8. It will be my third pillow in my Christmas collection.

There's a few other projects that I may have time for. It's supposed to be 107 degrees today and tomorrow, so I don't know if I'll be able to stand being upstairs, in the loft, for too long. We'll see. I hope that this hot weather ends soon. I'm really looking forward to cooler temperatures and the lovely sound of rain on our metal roof.

Thanks for hosting this. Happy sewing everyone!

aashley333: Pretty DP.

Happy 60th, Iceblossom!

I made progress yesterday on my Harmony quilt. I should finish the top this afternoon. I have a few non-sewing things to accomplish before I head to the sewing area.

thimblebug6000 09-05-2020 07:26 AM

Panchita, I think TaughtByGrandma's scrappy is the same free pattern that I have made a few times. If you go to quilterscache.com and search for Sunny Lanes, have a look at the 2nd page with the full pattern.

rryder 09-05-2020 07:35 AM

Happy Birthday IceBlossom!

Love the scrappy TaughtBy Grandma!

Ashely- Neat DP using the blue jeans have fun at the beach.

This morning I've managed to get a little more done on the Big Butterfly. Just a little more thread painting in the background to tie it together, then I can quilt the borders-- really looking forward to being done with this one, it's not only a UFO, but I've been working on it steadily since this spring and I really want to do something else LOL!
