Virtual Quilting Weekend - April 15-April 17, 2016

Welcome to the spring VQW. Now that your income taxes are done and filed(Americans!), it's time to relax and quilt. Pull out one of those UFOs that have been taunting you (mine do this all the time :( ) or maybe you're in the mood to start something new. Perhaps your room needs organizing (mine always does!) or you've received your tax refund and want to support a LQS with it. Whatever quilty you're doing this weekend, please join us and let us know what you're up to. For myself, I have several WIPs and I plan to work on a couple of those. Our guild is having a sew-in tomorrow so will join about twenty other ladies Saturday and start a new project, baby quilt for my new grand niece/nephew due around Labor Day. Can't wait to see what everyone is doing this weekend! :)

This ufo has been taunting me for awhile, and there are three more lined up, with backings and bindings at the ready, to take their turn on the rack next. I'll probably finish quilting this one today and get another one loaded to start tomorrow.

meanwhile, here's what's happening on the design wall. The string bin has also been taunting me something terrible.

Good morning everyone!! :sew: Tea is on and I'm ready to start my projects. the 1st project today is working on my WIP AR Crossroads scrappy quilt. Make 40 blocks for my king size bed. Have to mark them 1st. Second I plan to finish a small snowman WH, UFO. If I have time I will put on borders for another doggie throw quilt. That should keep me busy this AM. Happy sewing everyone. Lurk in later today.

happylab 04-15-2016 06:18 AM

Oh Debra K. what lovey, bright, pretty quilt tops. Looking forward to seeing then quilted.

Macybaby 04-15-2016 06:21 AM

I'll play! I have to work until noon, and then I am free until Monday morning. DH and I moved the LA back in January, and I finally got to using it again this week. I think I should spend quite a bit of time with it, I've got 7-8 tops waiting to be quilted, including one for my bed. I need to get caught up on my "365 block" group too, and I should put some time in on some of the UFOs, though I made good progress on one last weekend.

OhCanada 04-15-2016 06:21 AM

Hello all. I have a wall quilt and coordinating table runner that need quilting. I'm committed to a horseback riding outing on Sunday and a pool side party Saturday ... but hopefully I can get at least one of them quilted.

DOTTYMO 04-15-2016 06:24 AM

Ive a pile of cut stripes for a Bargello which need joining together in sets will try to do them after shopping and church Saturday and Sunday.

ManiacQuilter2 04-15-2016 06:31 AM

I am STILL working on my taxes but then I hope to have the blocks done using this pattern and fabrics:
http://www.robertkaufman.com/quiltin...eeking_points/
The fabrics are much brighter and bolder than the posted photo. Very outside my comfort quilting skills.

ontheriver 04-15-2016 06:50 AM

I am going to get started on my fancy forest pattern I just received.

These look fantastic. Wish I had the patience for these kind of patterns. Look forward to seeing the finished items .

Count me in. I love these VQ Weekends! They're so motivating and I get so much done. I'm working on 3 projects right now. I need to finish the quilting on a gift quilt, finish the piano key border on another quilt and fix the points and sandwich a 3rd quilt. I'll post pix later. Sew on!

Cam's gram 04-15-2016 07:21 AM

I hesitate to say I'm in. Every time I do, things happen to keep me from quilting but I'm trying it this weekend. DH is working most of Saturday and Sunday and picked up the taxes this morning. Have a king size top to quilt and queen size top to finish. Want to make the back and binding for the queen size too. Pictures later. Need to get these two quilts done for the cottage. Plan on opening it up just over a week from now.

kristakz 04-15-2016 08:31 AM

I'm in! First I have to finish (as much an I can without the last 2 thread colours) a customer quilt on the longarm. Then, I found the extra fabric I needed to finish 3 quilts, so I'll settle down with one or two of them and see how much progress can be made.

Snooze2978 04-15-2016 08:59 AM

I'm glad to say all my UFO's have been finished. Now I'm working on making pillow cases for 2 of those quilts so the recipents will have a way to store them during the summer. Pulled out the leftover strips and scraps to make these pillowcases as they have to be larger than normal as the quilts themselves are over 100" x ??. Then of course I'm working on the next big quilt, going to my BOM class tomorrow plus working on quilts for a set of twins due in early August. Making extra blocks to make the pillows I give to them the following year to match. So guess I have my weekend cut out for me. Already got all the yard work done for the day so I can play.

gramajo 04-15-2016 10:00 AM

I'm in. I'm making "Women of the Bible" 108" X 120", for my BFF, hopefully for Christmas. It has 40 10" or 15" blocks and is constructed in 5 sections. I quilt on a DSM so will quilt each section and then put together. Section A has 6 block and 4 connecting blocks. That is quilted. Section B has 11 blocks and 5 connectors. I have 1 1/2 blocks quilted on B. I would like to finish the section, we'll see. I took some pictures to show you, but am having trouble getting them off the camera. I want to quilt now and work on the pictures later. Good luck to all of you in completing your goals or at least get well along your way.

I'm in - I have 2 projects calling for my attention this weekend. I have decided how I am going to quilt my Allietare Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt so it is getting sandwiched.

And as I was sewing rows together on my Cathedral Stars (also Bonnie Hunter design  ) I didn't care for the teal I was planning to use for the setting triangles but I found some more of the lighter blue batik and am hoping it comes in tomorrow's mail. The two purpley batiks are the borders. So I have some unstitching to do there.

Tomorrow I am going to a trunk show by Deb Strain at one of my favorite shops - her new bee fabric line is adorable!

K-Roll 04-15-2016 11:41 AM

I will finish my everlovin' slipcover - so I can move on to
1) creating a fabric wall out of no space - to start, out of a 4' x 4' matboard I will cover with flannel
2) another practice pup potholder (for my SIL as a surprise - she lives 2500 miles away but her pup has his own fb page so luckily I can get pics galore without asking for them) the key word is 'practice'
3) ponder making a Trip Round the World quilt-top out of fabric I was given, since it seems that might be a good start.
Yes, and raise a glass of wine to taxes being done.

K-Roll 04-15-2016 11:44 AM

DebraK, forgot to say: WOW! (this goes for Quilting Vagabond too...)
I love the crane, just love it.

wesing 04-15-2016 02:16 PM

If you take part-timers I'll play. My wife and daughter have been out of town for almost two weeks and they are due home tomorrow. Until then I have an I-Spy quilt to quilt and bind, and the center of my 365 challenge quilt to finish. That will catch me up through February. When my girls get home all quilting will come to a screeching halt!

Macybaby 04-15-2016 03:21 PM

I've been cutting pieces all afternoon - for the 365 challenge. Now I have to go sew them up and then on to another project.

I've been working on PP blocks for the Farmer's Wife 1930's blocks quilt. The blocks are so intricate it takes me an hour or two to piece one.

I have an I Spy quilt top to finish putting together for a customer tonight... have to mail that quickly. Then I can get back to playing with whatever I want.

Tomorrow is a QuiltAThon day with my charity group. We are sewing up lots of Christmas fabrics into quilts to give out to patients in the hospital this Christmas. I'm thinking I may just do some D9Ps to make it fast and easy. I love quilting with the ladies in my group!

I finished a quilt top earlier in the week so took a break and have been having fun making quick little zipper pouches!

Dedemac 04-15-2016 04:58 PM

I will be stopping by and playing a bit, but yard work must get done tomorrow. It will be warm here tomorrow and Sunday so I will work on a little sewing a lots of cleaning in the garden. But I want to see what everyone is working on!!
Sheliz love the project on the long arm.
Sewbizgirl great blocks.

If I get anything done I will post it.

donac 04-15-2016 06:02 PM

I spend some time this afternoon cutting squares for ds's wedding quilt. They want a signature quilt so I cut out white squares today and will cut out rainbow colored squares to go in the corners. I will also be hand quilting my niece's wedding quilt. Then I have to start on my other son and other niece's quilt. ( yes actually 5 weddings but 4 Quilts in a year and a half). I have time Sat. Sun we have to do something with ds2 but I should have some time after we get back.

sewbizgirl 04-15-2016 07:09 PM

I love those zipper bags, Jeanne. The little suitcases and globes are so cute. (Riley Blake?) Nice how you covered the ends of your zips with fabric tabs. Looks great.

jmoore 04-16-2016 02:31 AM

I will only be able to chime in for a bit this morning (once I get of the QB). Am traveling early Sunday morning for work. I have a couple more rows to assemble on my Allietare, it's the pinning that is time consuming....

Debra K, love your scrappy star quilt. Are you happy with your HQ Avante? I got to test drive one for just a couple of minutes at MQX last week. I am still up in the air as to which LA I want.

Vagabond, your Allietare is beautiful... I couldn't see your borders in the photo, did you go with gold?

Reba'squilts 04-16-2016 04:58 AM

Spring is finally here in Mi!!! Gotta go outside!!! I really like your scrappy quilt. Will keep it in mind for some of my leftovers.

Kaye 04-16-2016 05:03 AM

I love the origami crane. I sent you a pm to see if you would give me information about the pattern. This would be perfect for my guilds "ugly fabric challenge"!

Karamarie 04-16-2016 05:07 AM

Will also have to be outside cleaning flower beds, etc. today but I know I will find some time to be in my sewing room. Have finished 2 large quilts, 3 baby quilts, 4 burp cloths, and a sewing machine cover in the last couple of months so have made progress on de-stashing. Have a couple of non-quilting projects to do then my UFOs are done. I'm sure I will find some inspiration from you gals to start something new this weekend. Quilt away!!!

lovelyl 04-16-2016 05:07 AM

My guild is now into EPPing, so I plan to work on a Lucy Boston block. And finish making a thimble holder.

Macybaby 04-16-2016 05:09 AM

love looking at and reading what everyone is doing! Vagabond, that reminds me that I have an Allietare ready to quilt too!

This is what I did yesterday afternoon and this AM - the sides and corners for the center of the 365 challenge quilt. While I like this, the problem is I don't think it's going to go well with all the other blocks . . . they are all very scrappy and this is not.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psgjue9kcs.jpg

this is the center - from the end of Feb.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pswsl0binu.jpg

now to get to work and caught up on the 3" blocks.

Thanks!
No, I used black for the setting triangles, narrow gold border and red for the wide border. I am planning to do the scalloped edge too.

QuiltingVagabond 04-16-2016 05:14 AM

Everyone has such pretty projects! I am off to the Deb Strain show - I'll check in again later today.

Cotton Mama 04-16-2016 05:18 AM

I see a lot of beautiful quilts in progress. Sewbizgirl, I look forward to seeing more of your intricate blocks. Jeanne, your bags are so cute!

i will recommence piecing a quilt I'd set aside for several weeks and hope to finish attaching binding to a child's jelly roll quilt.

I am looking to acquire a midarm machine. Yours looks about the right size. Could you tell me about your set-up--machine and frame. Thanks.

DebraK 04-16-2016 06:28 AM

Sure. I bought a used Avante (HandiQuilter) from a quilt shop that was going out of business. It has an 18" throat. The frame is set up short. I can quilt an 80" wide quilt with this set up and have a 4' extension to expand the table in the future. For more information, I would just research the model. I've had no problems with this machine that could not be handled by a phone call to support. Only one call, and it was as simple as loose cables. I don't know what else I can tell you except that I am pleased with my purchase.

tropit 04-16-2016 08:34 AM

Today, I'm quilting a piano key border, SITD style. It's excruciatingly boring. Lots of puckers too...AUGH!

retiredteacher09 04-16-2016 10:16 AM

Like Cam's Gram, I get excited because a VQW is coming up and life happens. :) However, I have been playing with fabric.

On Wednesday, I hosted a volunteer event where the people traced and cut baby items. Yesterday, I spent time folding and counting burp cloths, bibs, and wash mitts. I also trimmed(some weren't cut straight) and refolded and counted receiving blankets.

After helping serve at a funeral, I delivered all of the above to the charity to serge. It took me a long time to put things away. I still need to count the toys that were stuffed and sew them shut.

So lots of 'playing' with fabric yesterday. Then I met my adult niece and we went shopping for a different Mother-of-the-groom wedding dress. I am having a hard time finding one that fits me without alterations. I treated her to supper for an early birthday treat and we had so much fun. She is my oldest niece and will be 43 on the 18th. Today, we will shop for accessories for the dress.

So, needless to say, no sewing time yet but it has been fun 'playing with the fabric."

Thanks for sharing what you are up to today. I will check in later this evening.

Connie

P.S. Congrats to everyone that is continuing with the 365 Day Challenge. I am keeping the info if I decide to continue this summer.

kjackson 04-16-2016 10:22 AM

Well, let's see, which UFO first? I have my grandson's 1st bday quilt from blocks everyone made at my daughter's baby shower, and a pretty butterfly wallhanging I want to finish for my office, and I bought these cool shabby chic picture frames that I want to make vintage-y looking blocks for. I'm on a roll with the butterfly quilt, so I will probably work on that this weekend and post pix later.

kjackson 04-16-2016 10:24 AM

Beautiful, Debra!
