Virtual Quilting Weekend--Feb 12-15, 2021

Welcome to the regularly scheduled February VQW. I have some hand work projects to work on this weekend and will hopefully get a couple wall hangings quilted and bound. My main sewing machine threw a temper tantrum Wednesday and I had to order a new bobbin case for it. Hopefully when it arrives Friday, that will fix the issue and I can get back to work!

So what will you be working on this weekend? Anyone starting Christmas presents? I have a little picking up I should probably do at some point over the weekend :)

Next VQW will be March 12-14, 2021.

quiltingshorttimer 02-11-2021 04:50 PM

I'm in! working on some ribbons for the KC Regional Quilt Show (and sure how not to mess up!) and also my guild challenge temperature quilt--have about 2 weeks of blocks to do to catch up. And doing design work on possible quilting on my first Judy Niemeyer quilt. And who knows--maybe start another quilt! (like cutting triangles for middle g--boy's quilt). So lots of stuff to do, but probably few pictures. But super cold here and I'll have much to do.

cjsews 02-11-2021 05:38 PM

I have some paper piecing blocks to do. I keep procrastinating on these. Maybe this VQW is the push I need

Julienm1 02-11-2021 05:40 PM

I'm in! Will try to get this pizza project Linus top pieced and maybe basted. Oh boy. I typed it so no going back now. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png

happylab 02-11-2021 06:38 PM

I’m in. I plan to machine bind 2 quilts. Make 2 pillowcases. Quilt a top (after I decide if I will add another border 1st). Then work on BHMQ steps #3 to step #6. I have all steps 1/2 way done. I have a list of several small projects I may complete in between. So I plan to be busy over the next 4 days. Thank-you for hosting this VQW.

Rff1010 02-12-2021 12:02 AM

All the blocks are done for my niece's. Time to put it together

cherrybsixty 02-12-2021 02:53 AM

Yippee, I finally get to be in on one, "VQW", it's so good to being involved in one of these, thank you Heather for hosting. Oh yea, I will be working on my mask making and I did start that apron for my friend. I am going to get to that chef' cap also. So it's still 'dark-turdie' around this part of the country and I really don't get that much done, but when the daylight breaks through I will be up and at them.

Have a blessed sewing day all of you fellow VQW'ers

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/heart.gif I am working on a baby quilt made of flannel and minky. I know I will have fun cleaning up the minky fuzz as I cut it out.
Happy Valentine's Day!

tallchick 02-12-2021 03:08 AM

Thanks for hosting Heather! I’m in and still working on Grassy Creek. I hope to get it to its final stages and perhaps even all sewn together so I can work on the border. I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

Julienm1 02-12-2021 03:52 AM

Saw the thread on origami face masks and just may make a couple. DIL works front office in elem school and has to provide her own mask. MIL to the rescue!!!

And as far as Christmas projects...LOL now that was a funny question. According to previous posts, some of us, who shall remain anonymous, finally got their holiday decorations put away...lol

jmoore 02-12-2021 04:05 AM

Me too...at least for Saturday. I still need to get the binding on a charity quilt. I am picking up my 6 and 3 yr old grandsons on Sunday and will have them through Thursday so I doubt I’ll get much sewing done while they are here. We are supposed to get another 6 inches of snow on Tuesday so that will keep them busy. Time to pull out my long johns.

WMUTeach 02-12-2021 04:22 AM

I am back for this weekend.
1.Finish cutting usable pieces from my scrap bin.
2.Finish Quilting one quilt.
3.Make binding for quilt.

If those get done, oh there is always plenty more to quilt or piece.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

Cheesehead 02-12-2021 05:52 AM

Thanks for hosting Heather! I have a jewel box quilt that needs to be loaded onto the long arm and quilted. When I need a brake from quilting, I will be piecing some Easter placemats.

I'm in. I have a baby quilt to finish and another to make. Need to get these done! After some housework and washing material for second quilt (flannel), heading to the sewing room, Julienm1 - still have my Christmas tree up in the family room (the back half of the room is my sewing). DH asked if I'll have it down my 4th of July! I love Christmas trees.

luvstoquilt 02-12-2021 06:31 AM

I am in and have a couple of things to finish. I am hand quilting a lap quilt and need to get it done and I also have a number of small kits to attack. I am going to try to do one small kit every weekend. this will likely be about as doable as New Year's resolutions!

happylab 02-12-2021 06:37 AM

Good morning everyone. It is sunny and freezing, zero degrees right now. So I figure fabulous weather to sew by. This AM I plan to machine bind 2 throw quilts. Then, -if I have time finishing pinning and sew rolls together on a Linus top for my guild. Then this afternoon/Evening I will work on BHMQ - Grassy Creek steps #3 to #6. I’m extending the quilt to about 90” long to (as close as I can get) 120” wide.
- Have a great happy sewing day everyone.

Karamarie 02-12-2021 06:38 AM

I am finishing up a wall hanging made from 4 old sewing machine panels that were given to me. It will be hung right above my sewing machine. If I could I would post a pix when completed but unlikely. Just doesn't work for me anymore. Enjoy the weekend with your sewing project. It is so cold in Minnesota that it is easy to stay in.

thimblebug6000 02-12-2021 08:11 AM

For sure, I will finish off the baby quilt from last weekend, and keep machine quilting away on my Sew Incredibly Crazy 2020 BOM...also want to make myself a black mask...... I have only ever worn nice bright and cheery ones.

MicheleC 02-12-2021 08:15 AM

I’m in. I will be working on adding borders to the quilt top I’m making for my own bed. After that is done, I am not sure if I will work on finishing the quilting on a Double Slice or process some scraps.

sewingitalltogether 02-12-2021 08:42 AM

Ok, I’m in. The snow is deep and winter is all around me. Time to keep busy. I’ve been sewing for a good part of the day lately. I pulled out my box for Judy Niemeyer Vintage Rose. Just keep plugging along. Making bits of progress. Plus I will be meeting up with my longarm quilter. I will be giving her my Protea quilt. I’m very pleased with it.

tropit 02-12-2021 08:56 AM

I'll try to fit some quilting in. I'm into machine quilting with my new machine, if I can get it set up. Happy sewing everyone!

I will be working on a cat quilt. I just completed this one and will be starting one for my grandson.

Cheesehead 02-12-2021 11:06 AM

Midwife, great cat quilt! That quilt has been on my "to do" list, I even have the fabric bought for it. I should set a goal to work on the cat quilt for next month's VQW.

Happy in my sewing room...finished this February BOM consisting of 48 Hsts

midwife 02-12-2021 11:29 AM

Cheesehead thank you. It's a fun, quick quilt to make. I started that one last Friday and had it done and quilted on Monday.

midwife 02-12-2021 11:31 AM

Jmoore, that's beautiful!

Sync 02-12-2021 11:53 AM

I’m in, there are a few projects that really need my attention. Clue #7 from my Cotton Cuts mystery needs to be done and I have some slow stitching to do on my mini. Of course, working on my Unity quilt and leader/enders.

Still working on the CQA Mystery Quilt blocks. I have a few of the 29 done and they are looking pretty. I sure did learn one thing....Next time I won't follow the directions that say to press the seams open! I much prefer to nest the seams than to try to match them up. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to be an on point quilt as there are 29 blocks.
I have a Zoom seminar tomorrow with Krista Hennebury (Poppyprint quilts). I've done one class with her before called Speed Date Improv, which was great, so I'm looking forward to it. This one is called Finding Your Signature Style.
I have a small wall hanging UFO that I'd like to do some work on this weekend. We'll see how that goes.

I'm petthefabric and, oh yes, in too. So look forward to VQW, I'm a little giddy and being funny.
My projects are:
Finish this top. Attachment 631654
Attach a binding to another quilt
LA a quilt.
Last 2 will have pictures later.

Conchalea 02-12-2021 01:38 PM

I'm in. I've been sewing on a quilt top I cut out over a year ago, then had to pack away all fabric for a move. Our temps in north Texas are crazy low for us, predicted to be -04⁰ one night. It hasn't gotten above freezing since Tuesday, so it's great to stay in & sew.

petthefabric 02-12-2021 01:43 PM

Our DD and husband moved to Florida where the highest elevation is under 500 ft, for the whole state! We live in California at a moderate elevation of 3100' in Sierra Nevada's, on the way to Yosemite Ntl Park. Today is a moderate weather pattern, overcast with possible rain and 46 degrees. I'll stay inside because it's too cold. Cold is relative.

QuiltingVagabond 02-12-2021 03:21 PM

Not sure I will get sewing time this weekend or not. For the past 2 weeks, we have been helping our son remodel his kitchen. New flooring, (had to remove tile floor and a layer of underlayment first), built a new wall (drywall mud is my job), painting the cabinets, new lights... etc. It is starting to come together, but there is still a lot of work to do. The new countertops should come next week so that means new sinks, plumbing and all that goes with that.

rryder 02-12-2021 03:39 PM

Thanks for hosting, Heather! I've been working on the Debbie Brown Feb. quilt. Got the borders put on today and found a backing in stash. Just need to sandwich it and figure out how I want to quilt it. I've also got a UFO to work on and an improvisational crumb quilt that is a WIP. We were due to get about 4 to 6 inches of snow overnight, instead we got 3 or so and now they're saying we are likely to get freezing rain with ice accumulations around 1/4" tomorrow- keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't bring down tree limbs and power lines. If we lose power, I'll concentrate on the UFO since it requires some coloring with Inktense pencils.

quiltingshorttimer--which Judy Niemeyer pattern are you making? I enjoy her patterns.

cjsews--hope the VQW motivates you. Sometimes it's hard to find my quilting mojo. I just sit in my sewing room and look at my fabric, patterns, kits. Often that will get me moving but sometimes it just depresses me when I see all I have to do!

Julienm1--origami face masks sound quite interesting

MicheleC--double slice layer cake is my go-to pattern. I always have layer cakes here.

jmoore--congrats on getting your February BOM completed.

Well, the bobbin case arrived for my machine today and I put it right in and started quilting. I finished my February ufo challenge which was nice. I tried the two color flange binding for the first time on it. Didn't turn out too bad. The final clue was released yesterday for Compass Star mystery quilt so I started assembling the top. I have it about 1/3 done and should be able to complete it tomorrow.. Then my plan is to prep three wool applique projects.

Whoop! Whoop! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png
Finished piecing the pizza quilt. Found a container of "what in the world" fabric chunks and hunks so will start to piece somewhat coordinating fab for backing(s). Maybe I'll be able to piece enough backings for at least 3 lap quilts. (Boy I sure sound ambitious after a glass of wine!)

I totally forgot VQW was this weekend. So glad I checked the forum tonight. Thank you Raggiemom for hosting. 👍Reading through this thread, wow lots of work will get done.😎 I have been working on stencilling pillows, finished up on 12 today and started four more, but ran out of fabric paint. So gotta get some coming in the mail.
I did get these completed, they are an order I will deliver them next week.

I will check in all weekend, this thread is so I inspiring.

thimblebug6000 02-12-2021 06:40 PM

So nice to see and hear about everyone's project tonight..... baby quilt and label is complete.... and did some more machine quilting on my Sew Incred. Crazy project...but when I checked the back....ugh...the tension was off....so rip-it rip-it happened...... now I have my Granddoggy visiting for a few days...she keeps me on my toes.... not sure what I will accomplish if any tomorrow.....we have a very cold snap with frigid winds so my walks are not so enjoyable!

Panchita 02-12-2021 11:32 PM

Hi All! And thank you for hosting Heather https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

I will get a chunk of Saturday to do some sewing, not sure about Sunday - we'll see how it goes!

My projects are:
  • Find a backing and figure out how much batting/wadding I need for my Penguins quilt (and can I Frankenbatt it, or do I need to invest in new) - I don't plan on actually starting the quilting yet, but want to corral my supplies
  • Mark up (and start?) decorative quilting on my Pumpkins wallhanging (I've finished the practical 'keep it from moving around' stitch in the ditch part, yay!)
  • Finally (maybe) get around to de-papering my Stars Sampler - it's just sitting around, staring at me. I don't feel I can call it a finished flimsy until the last finicky 'tidying' is done.

I'm also contemplating my next project (always dangerous) which I plan to be a Puffin quilt. I bought the pattern when on holiday in Bar Harbor in 2013. The shop was called Fabricate and was painted a deep purple. The people were lovely, and I really hope the shop is still going. Such good memories to revisit while making this one (the holiday was excellent too, not just the quilt shop, lol). https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

I see some excellent work is being done already. I am particularly impressed with midwife's cat quilt (also the speed with which it went together!!)

Panchita 02-12-2021 11:39 PM

Ha! I decided to check the Internet to see if Fabricate is still going, and I'm happy to report it is!

I am also very tickled by the Tour the Shop photos - in the second photo you can see the Puffin quilt I plan on making (albeit with a slightly different colourway - I'll swap out the yellow for a blue/purple I think. Am keeping the puffins puffin-coloured https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png). Link here if interested Fabricate® | Tour the shop! | Bar Harbor, ME (mdifabricate.com)

Need to go and actually *do* now, rather than puttering on the computer https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/cool.png

Happy sewing!
