Virtual Quilting Weekend--February 14-17, 2020

Welcome to VQW! I hope to have lots of company this weekend as I work in my sewing room. I actually started this afternoon, stitching down a couple small applique projects.Tomorrow I'm quilting with friends--we're working on wool applique. I have two projects prepped in case I get bored with one! The rest of the weekend I hope to finish the small applique projects. Then I have four quilts to hopefully sandwich and maybe even quilt one of them. At some point this weekend I hope to pick up my sewing room. It's not too bad at the moment and I'd like to keep it from getting too messy.

So what are you working on this weekend? It's never too early to start Christmas presents! I actually am thinking of some and I may take some on the guild retreat in March to work on. Are you replenishing your stash? Are you starting a new project, or maybe working on UFOs? Whatever you're working on, please join us.

Next VQW is March 13-15. Will check back in tomorrow.

Iceblossom 02-13-2020 04:27 PM

I am proud to report that I am almost done with my Bonnie Hunter Frolic mystery top. It is possible but unlikely I'll get the last two borders on today. So tomorrow I will be dealing with cleaning up, making the binding (fabric already washed), and figuring out what I'm doing for the back.

Unlikely to be sewing at all Saturday, I suggested to hubby that we do something we've never done before which is to go to a live football game of any sort, so that will be our romantic Valentine's date. Seattle has an XFL team and Saturday is the first ever home game of the Seattle Dragons. I expect that the weather will be miserable, we are in a semi-protected corner but I will be dressing warm and bringing rain stuff.

So if I'm not all worn out on Sunday, it's time to finally put the borders on that Cherry Goose project from so many virtual weekends ago. Thought I'd be able to do while I was doing the Frolic project but no, just had too much fabric out for that to deal with anything else.

thimblebug6000 02-13-2020 04:55 PM

I will be working on squares from the Border Creek sew-a-long..... but also continuing to print out pictures and log my quilts I have made in the past, and put them into journals. I always enjoy hearing about everyone's projects.

I’m in. Thanks, Raggiemom, for hosting these every month.

1. Visit my first grandchild sometime over the weekend. He was born on February 2nd.🥰. It’s time for more snuggles.

2. Finish the scrappy rail fence on my design wall.

2. Work on the 6” die-cut crazy patches.

3. Finish at least 2 more big blocks on a donated UFO from a board member.

4. Maybe make a few baby burp cloths.

No school through Tuesday so I won’t be called in to sub. Wahoo!

quiltingshorttimer 02-13-2020 05:15 PM

thanks for once again hosting! I will be missing--my son gets to formally adopt his oldest son(been raising him since he was 15months and now is almost 12) tomorrow so we are going to there house to spend weekend and celebrate! But, please everyone, post pictures!

I've been working like a mad-hatter for 2 weeks putting together modern quilts (all lap and smaller) for a program I'm doing for my guild on modern quilt design this fall--almost all of my modern quilts have been done as wedding/graduation/etc presents to young people and can't reel many back in!

quiltingshortimer: How exciting! Enjoy the special weekend.

Good morning everyone. I’m in, i’m Working on quilting a rwb quilt for my GN, which I plan to give her on Saturday. I have 2 rows quilted, need to do 5 more rows. It a project we bought fabric together during Missouri Star quilt company anniversary. We started it together about 3 months ago and then she got busy at work, so I’m finishing the quilt for her. I figure I will be done with it by the end of the day tonight. After this project will work on a guild valentine fabric challenge. I’ll post pics after I get them completed. Then if I have time and energy go back and work on my BHMQ-FRolic and my Halloween scrappy quilt for my GN. That should keep me busy this weekend. 3 rows down 4 more to go. Have fun sewing and quilting everyone.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!!!

cherrybsixty 02-14-2020 02:48 AM

Good morning everyone, oh!!! fun, I've been watching for this since the Super Bowl Weekend. Happy Valentine Day to everyone!!! I hope it's a sweet one for you. I have been telling myself that I am going to bake some snickerdoodle cookies for days, so I just might do that.

I'm in for VQW this weekend. I am working on a new piece for me. I am using my purple and lilac colored stash to put together a laptop for my oldest daughter. It's finally her time to get a 'mama quilt.' She's has been waiting her allotted time. I really want to make it queen-size but not sure if I have that much stash in that color hue. I will just work on it and see how far I get.

Thanks Raggiemom for hosting and you have a happy sweet Valentine Day

Happy sewing day everyone

I am going to be busy going through my scraps this weekend. my challenge to myself is to make a mini version of a pattern we were given at my last quilt get together. I also have a charity quilt to finish. It's going to be cold and snowy this weekend so I am happy to stay in, stay warm and sew. Have a nice weekend everyone.

Rff1010 02-14-2020 04:26 AM

We are having some family getaway time so no sewing for me. But I finished both a top and pieced back this week, and finished the binding on something else...so I'm due for a break anyway.

Lancaster PA quiltshops-I'm coming!

LynnBBQ 02-14-2020 05:04 AM

I'll be finishing the last rows on my Circa 1880 Quilt by Pam Buda. It makes me a little sad... Those tiny little blocks are so much fun, and I have made more than enough for the quilt, so I don't need to make any more. I work all day today (Friday) but I'll have Saturday and Sunday and I took a vacation day Monday so I should be able to get the last five rows assembled and get all the rows sewn into a top! I already have the quilting design drawn out, but that is for another weekend.

If the darker colors of the Civil War repro fabrics start to drag me down, I can switch to a brighter project for a while.

Raggiemom 02-14-2020 05:12 AM

iceblossom, enjoy the game!

quiltingshorttimer, what a wonderful day for your son and whole family.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. I'm looking forward to working on the wool applique with friends. The best part is it's only 5 minutes from my house!

And you're welcome on starting the VQW thread :)

cjsews 02-14-2020 05:35 AM

Maybe this is the push I need to finish a hunter’s star quilt. I have not had my heart in quilting for a couple months.

Happy Valentine's Day! I just finished the veteran's quilt that I was working on last VQW. So I hope to get the quilting done on it this weekend. But I also need to work on collecting all the info for taxes. sigh...
Here's the vet quilt.

QuiltMom2 02-14-2020 06:02 AM

I've got a very, very small job to finish a large quilt (place on binding didn't behave well for two inches- two inches! I ask you..) another quilt has a mere 18" of binding to complete, I'm handing over to friend another donation quilt to hand-stitch binding on back, there's a patriotic quilt to be loaded on longarm, and I have the fabric for backing and border for a nearly-completed top which ranks as a five-year UFO. I love to check on everyone's projects so keep the progress reports coming.

Lynn I can't wait to see a photo of your quilt! I have 210 blocks finished on mine. I have about 550 more to go~

juliasb 02-14-2020 06:10 AM

I have a QAYG project to work on this weekend. I have the center motif ready to quilt and several borders to work on. Looking forward to getting as much done as possible.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I woke up to a surprise bouquet of flowers on my sewing desk this morning, from my husband.

I'll be sewing more blocks for my Circa 1880 quilt. I'm happy to join you for this VQW!

What a striking quilt! The borders really finish it perfectly.

A very warm and heartfelt Happy Valentine's Day to everyone and as always, thank you Raggiemom for hosting.

I'm not sure how much I'm going to do this weekend, I would love to just sit up at my sewing machine and work on my hexagon quilt all through the weekend, I ended up starting the quilt again using 1.25 inch hexies instead of 1 inch, so I'm again at the beginning stages of it. The original 1 inch hexie quilt had some problems and after discussing it with my aunt who also quilts, she recommended starting over with larger hexies and better black fabric. At some point, I'll de-construct the original quilt and I'll hand piece that one. I'm determined to have a quilt with this design, I absolutely love the Grandmother's Flower Garden design.

I also have my nine-patch quilt that I finished in December to tie. If I can get the fiance on board with me, I may just finally pin baste that one and get to tying.

I suffer from near daily chronic migraines and the beginning of this year has not been kind to me, this week alone I've had four already and I'm in my recovery stage. At least, I hope. Fiance loaded me down last night with a year's worth of teas (Earl Grey, peppermint with raspberry, chamomile with mango, white tea with lemon, green tea with blackberry, a ton of chai tea, just to name a few) as part of my Valentine's Day, something he's done every Valentine's Day for the last eight years. I've got my teas to settle my stomach, now it's just to get the rampant weakness and lethargy to leave me alone so I can quilt, lol.

I definitely want to do something quilty this weekend. I turned in my churn dash quilt for the humane society auction, so now I should start the tshirt quilt requested by the daughter of a dear friend. Or I might start a temperture quilt. The national modern guild is going to collect some next year for a special exhibit at Quiltcon.

Irishrose2 02-14-2020 09:22 AM

I'm in. I haven't done much in the sewing room since my accident Nov 26, so I have plenty to do. I think I will start my granddaughter's baby quilt now that I know she's having a boy. Not my choice of fabrics, but it's fun to please her so I'll live with it. I may start my first block of my next military quilt to see if I like it. I'm thinking of mixing RWB and scrappy.

Cheshirepat 02-14-2020 09:29 AM

I'm hoping I can dip my head into my sewing room this weekend, I probably haven't sewn since the last one! Won't have Monday off (yay corporate life), and some other distractions going on, but I've much to do. Finishing the old, and starting the wool felt BOM "Chirp"! No pictures for that due to the 'media ban' for the project, but hoping to at least get parts sorted and organized. If I make any inroads at all I'll be happy.

Cam's gram 02-14-2020 10:14 AM

Quiltingshorttimer, congrats to everyone and enjoy this weekend!

I'm in - need to work on DGD's quilt for college graduation in May. I want to finish the borders, make backing and binding, get the batting ready and quilt it. This is the second time I have made this quilt. DGD loves mine so much, it's a perfect gift for her (her mother said I could give it to her for anything). My DGS#1 (her older brother) saw it and said "Wow!" and stood there with his mouth open. I talked to his wife and he had told her all about it and really liked it and she does too so I'm making a third one and have to have it ready for May too. He has his bachelor's degree and graduates in May with his RN degree. Tried but system won't let me post a picture of the top. Will try later.

Iceblossom 02-14-2020 11:02 AM

Sharing the last stitch dance here, just finished and posted my "South Seattle Frolic" top in the Bonnie Hunter Mystery thread.

https://www.quiltingboard.com/8360816-post1399.html

Whew! Feels good to get that off the design space and (sadly) into the quilt tops waiting for quilting stack. Not going to get bummed out with the size of that stack right now, it's time to celebrate a top completion :)

Wow! Cam's Gram! It's gorgeous.

I will lurk this weekend and possibly show anything I make progress on. Kinda lost my quilting mojo because I've been crocheting toys and a blanket for the grand girls.

Blueridgebeverly 02-14-2020 01:23 PM

Today I finished the February blocks for the 2020 Color challenge.

I also started to sandwich the New Years Day Merry Mayhem quilt. I’d love to get it done this weekend.

If there is time, I’d like to finish the border on a quilt I’m making for my sister.

Cheshirepat 02-14-2020 01:30 PM

That is a "Wow!" kind of quilt, Cam's Gram! Hopefully you enjoyed making it the first time?

Raggiemom 02-14-2020 02:25 PM

Your quilt looks great!

Yea!! I'm in for this VQW. This is my goal
1. Learn to post pics
2. Finish 4 pillow slips
3. Spend 4 hrs rearranging my art quilt and attaching appliques

For this Valentines Day, several days ago I asked DH, "Where are you taking me for lunch on Valentines Day?" He stepped up and even bought me a card. We had a very nice lunch with nice conversation. Then he went to his swing shift job and I came home to sew.

Kitsie 02-14-2020 04:06 PM

Hopefully I'll be finishing the quilting of
DP9 patch for my younger daughter (that ages me! She'll be 50 in July).

Raggiemom 02-14-2020 04:09 PM

Looks like everyone has had a productive Friday! I had a wonderful time working on my wool applique snowmen. We went out for lunch tonight (I brought leftovers home for DH). I started stitching down the applique on my last 12" block. Hopefully I will finish that tomorrow and get the three of them bound and hanging sleeves attached.

LifeLovePassion 02-14-2020 04:13 PM

I will be working on 3 baby quilts for gifts and some Project Linus quilt tops if I have time/want a break.

I just picked up batting, backing and some additional fabric for sashing and binding. My last online fabric order arrived today , so I am eager to get started.

Irishrose2 02-14-2020 04:37 PM

iceblossom, I love your colorful quilt. Are those your hand dyed fabrics?

Cam's mom, a beautiful job.

I didn't get far. Had an extra dog, but he's no problem. I have been baking for a fundraiser for the rescue I'm getting my next cat from. I hope this cat one works out better than the last one. 2 batches of banana bread (4 different flavors), a large batch of chocolate chip cookies (requested) and a batch of oatmeal/ currant/M&M cookies. Smells wonderful in here and I can't touch a thing. I had planned something gluten free, but not this time. I did cut and sew a few strips for the baby quilt - I lost my 1/4" seam - I haven't sewn in so long, so I'm already using the seam ripper.

LaurMac 02-14-2020 04:50 PM

You all are inspiring! I sewed a binding on o e side of my fall wall quilt so will hand sew the other side while we have visitors for the rest of the weekend. Sewing 1.5" strips then cutting groups of 4 and sewing to make the fronts of 'needle' books - Will add batting pages to the books for our club's pot luck lunch gift . Reds for half of them.

Christine- 02-14-2020 05:00 PM

I took a trip to the fabric store today and bought the lining and outer fabric to make my daughter a diaper bag. I think I'll take a break from making blocks for the Circa 1880 quilt and start working on the diaper bag tomorrow. It's nice seeing what everyone is working on!

Iceblossom 02-14-2020 05:14 PM

Irishrose, if you mean "my" hand dyes -- that is the bag of hand dyed fabric I got at the thrift store for $7.99 and then found that although prepped and dyed beautifully, they weren't set for quilting. Happens my car was in the shop, had two sensors one in the dash and one somewhere deep in the guts and I was at home for the better part of three weeks and during that time I boiled and set the fabric until it doesn't run any more.

It was a rather crazy and labor intensive thing to do, but I have enough fabric for two more quilts out of that bag and I don't need the bright bright colors for either of those projects!

quiltingshorttimer 02-14-2020 06:53 PM

sad news at our house tonight--the court decided that the adoption needed to be posted for 3 weeks and bumped the hearing to March 30---I'm not real impressed with my daughter-in-law's attorney! But we are going up still and plan to celebrate being together--as I told the DIL to tell our grandson--he's been our grandson since they got married 10 years ago!

petthefabric 02-14-2020 07:38 PM

Finished 2 pillow slips. Just picked out enough stash fabric for 2 more.
