Virtual Quilting Weekend--May 26-30, 2022

I thought I would make this weekend's VQW a little longer since it is a long holiday weekend for many! I have MANY projects in process and will be working on those this weekend. I had company for a couple weeks this month so not much progress has been made on anything. First project after lunch today is to machine bind two quilts. Then I have a third charity quilt that needs sandwiching, quilting, and binding. Once that's done, I'll reassess and see what project would like to be worked on next. Probably an EPP UFO.

So what is everyone else working on this weekend? Looking forward to hearing from everyone.

Next VQW is July 1-4, 2022.

rryder 05-26-2022 07:40 AM

Yay!. Thanks for hosting and for starting a little early. Here's my list:
1. finish quilting Snail's Trail Al Fresco
2. finish paper piecing the arcs on the Judy Niemeyer Sunflower quilt
3. put the borders on my Oct. Color block quilt
4. resume quilting on my doodle quilt

That should be enough to keep me busy LOL!

Looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on.

Rob

tallchick 05-26-2022 08:18 AM

Thank for hosting again Heather, I’m in! I have 2 completed quilts from last weekend that need the binding sewn on, one more top that I need to get loaded on the longarm and hopefully quilted (if the thread makes it here) and maybe do some fabric prep or my next project. I also need to prep and stain my front door, provided the weather holds out, so we will see who wins for my time. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone is working on!

cjsews 05-26-2022 08:30 AM

I finally pulled out a needle turn appliqué project. I am down to the borders. As I couldn’t sleep last night , I was thinking I should quilt a UFO. Or maybe start a new
project. For now a nap sounds good. We’ll see how much I can accomplish.
thanks for hosting

sewingpup 05-26-2022 08:55 AM

Ha, as usually, my list is way longer than my arms and attention span. I do want to work on Bonnie's 2017 mystery, then if I actually get that completed, there are a couple of flannel queen sized ones, then I could do Bonnie's 2016 mystery, then I could actually quilt all the above or I could work on a couple of table runner sized I picked up when I bought my stripology mini, and I have downloaded a couple of Bonnie's newer PDF patterns and have piles of scraps, and I should finish my planting, and I need to clean out my car as I had an awful smell in there yesterday, thinking it might be a dead mouse somewhere, good thing though, it did not smell nearly as much this morning. Oh, and I bought a new oven yesterday and need to clear my pathway to the kitchen so they can deliver it. yeap, this should keep me busy for a bit, oh and I have to remember to my exercises for my PT.

RedGarnet222 05-26-2022 10:58 AM

I am in too! I got the weeds all pulled in the gardens and the patio set up. Whew, that was a job, I tell you!
I want to finish up a Shabby Fabrics bargello christmas tree skirt and quilt a Spooky Halloween house panel I added the four blocks that they suggested. It is a very long one so that should be enough to keep me hopping. I also need to box up the pin cushion I made for the swap here on the board to be ready to mail out when I get my name assigned to me.
If I get all that done, I will quilt a patriotic wall hanging I made a few years ago. That should be fun during this holiday. I really want to use it for fouth of july.

GingerK 05-26-2022 11:47 AM

If I get a chance to join, it won't be until Sunday afternoon. After 5 years for saying "we really should have a garage sale this May", we've finally gone thru all the boxes in the basement and the sale is set for Saturday. Tomorrow is finishing prep and begging Mother Nature for sunny skies, and Sunday will be recovery--and maybe finishing my Rolling Waves top. But I will be checking in to see how all your projects are going.

Karamarie 05-26-2022 12:23 PM

I have an applique project that has a lot of small pieces which I am cutting out. I think I got that done, now to begin applying them. Yikes.

Raggiemom 05-26-2022 02:22 PM

sewingpup--that's why I didn't make a list! I knew it would be longer than I would ever accomplish :)

I did get the two quilts bound and I have the third one sandwiched and ready to go tomorrow. I started cutting border strips for some blocks. They are 1 1/2 inches by 11 inches. Sigh--I cut mine at 9 1/2 inches because I looked at the wrong side of the block. So I will recut them the correct size tomorrow. I could piece them but I don't want to! While watching the Yankees tonight, I am going to sort through some hand work stuff I have tossed in a basket and see what exactly is in there.

Julienm1 05-26-2022 03:27 PM

Begining with:
  • Binding on Charity Quilt so it can be washed/dried
  • Glue baste 2nd charity quilt...piecing backing tonight.
  • Tidy up fabric room OMG...huge mess in there. That may take 1 1/2 days with several breaks for snacks
  • Decided what quilt to start for 3rd charity quilt.
That's enough for one weekend. Especially the fabric room project!!!

happylab 05-26-2022 05:34 PM

Good evening everyone. My goals this weekend (1). Set up my friend’s top on the quilting machine tonight. 1st I need to iron both the top and backing. Friday = (1) quilt the top mention above. (2) Sew 2-3 borders on my Bauble top. (3) mail out the BD 2.5” sqs. Saturday = (1) sew on my lock-in top 2020. Yes it’s a UFO. (2) set up & quilt the bauble top on long arm. Another UFO. (2) Sunday = (1) cut out & start sewing a top for my niece (2) finish my lock-in top and place on the long arm. Monday = (1) trim & bind quilted tops quilted earlier in the weekend. (2) cut out a dragon kit and start sewing. (3) quilt lock-in top. That should keep me busy for a few days. I figure what I don’t get completed will become my monthly goals.

Happy VQW everyone.

Gemm 05-26-2022 07:13 PM

I'm not as ambitious as some but I've been working on another commissioned I Spy quilt and would like to get the top finished this weekend. Other things keep getting in the way of quilt progress but I think this goal is manageable. Much of the top is laid out - just need to finish actually piecing and then attaching borders. Not convinced I have a piece of fabric that will work for this one as a backing so might even included a very careful trip to the LQS to pick that out and grab batting. Good luck, everyone!

thimblebug6000 05-26-2022 07:19 PM

I feel like an under-achiever….i am hoping to get a binding hand stitched

Railroadersbrat 05-26-2022 09:21 PM

Oof, didn't think it would start early, but that's okay because I've been busy. Happy Memorial Day Weekend to all my USA quilting sisters and thanks for hosting again, Heather!

Working mostly on my GFG, I have 29 flowers done, 11 with the white background, the rest still needs the white. I do intend on laying them out on my bed sometime this weekend (that's if I can get the dogs and my fiancé off of it long enough), I'll snap pictures when I do.

When I'm not working on that, I have four or five yards of white fabric that I've got to cut down for a couple of Cathedral Window pillows for us, but I'm running into some confusion with the measurements, so I'll be posting a question about it later in the main forum.

I'll also be working on a small zippered pouch for my traveling sewing kit so I can take my hexies with me, the ones I have now are just so bulky and take up a lot of room in my purse, the one I found should fit perfectly and looks like a lot of fun to make. I found some cute 2.5" squares that has small scissors, cross stitch patterns, and pins on them, I thought they would be perfect for it so I'm scrapping it up. The pouch has three zippered vinyl pockets that'll be just the right size for my hexies, then more on the other side for scissors, thread and anything else I need.

Feeling really good about this weekend, haven't felt this good in a long time and I feel that the momentum I've been building up with my GFG is going to carry over. Also, having all of my quilting sisters around me makes things easy and fun - love these weekends so much!

Rff1010 05-27-2022 02:52 AM

Helping a friend move today - but tomorrow...
1)hopefully finish the top for Catitude french braid and then more 2) Snail Trail blocks (they're taking me a very long time!)
3) If I need a change of pace I have some Project Linus scrappiest that need sandwiching - my least favorite part of the process

WMUTeach 05-27-2022 03:09 AM

Oh, Goodie another opportunity to dive into finishing projects and starting new ones.
I started yesterday going through a bin of scraps that I just had to keep. I is full of Odds and Ends of blocks from other projects, "orphan blocks", cuts off snow balled corners and on and on. Well I made the center of two baby quilts yesterday and will continue to move ahead.

1. Finish the pastel baby quilt top, layer and quilt.
2. Square up the random blocks and bag them for future use.
3. Get caught up with guild mystery Quilt.
4. Assemble the Civil War Star Quilt - get those setting triangles in place!.
5. Plan a RWB table runner for a neighbor and maybe one for myself.

That will do for this week-end. Happy stitching everyone.

QuiltBaer 05-27-2022 03:43 AM

I'm joining too! The director of CASA in our county will be visiting our quilt guild in June. She put the word out that they need baby and small child quilts. So yesterday I started cutting. I need to gather a few more blues, then I will be ready to sew. I am really looking forward to making a quilt for a child. I have no grandchildren, so I don't make them very often.

Friday morning and I am getting ready for bed.

I am much farther along on my GFG than I originally thought I was, I didn't know that until I laid the flowers out. I think another twenty or even thirty flowers will be enough to give me the hang that I want off of the bed. Super excited that I'm so close.

Later today, more white around the flowers and working on the white fabric I have.

SusieQOH 05-27-2022 06:17 AM

Ugh, my sewing room needs a good cleaning. I'm finishing up a project but I have messes everywhere and can't find a thing!
So you can guess what I'll be doing :D

donac 05-27-2022 10:45 AM

I got home Wednesday from a week of taking care of my mother and sister who caught covid. I usually only spend 1 night and day with my mom to give my sister a break. I came Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning my sister tested positive. She went to her house and I was then caregiver for my 89 year old mother who tested positive the next day. After they both had a round of antivirals and tested positive I got to come home this past Wednesday.

Just before I left I had started quilting a queen size quilt for my son and his wife. I finally got back to hand quilting it when I got back. That is what I will be working on this weekend. I may start cutting out the fabric for his brother's quilt to give me a change of pace

RedGarnet222 05-27-2022 11:45 AM

Hi everyone. I am seeing lots of progress made here today! I finished the bargello spiral tree skirt. It came out very well, even if I do say so myself. The shabby fabric's pattern was quite confusing because of the fabrics they used in their skirt was muddy and ran together too much in my mind's eye. So the diagram of the wedges were so hard to figure out. I finally stepped back and thought about the spicy spiral I had made a couple years ago and just did it that way. My fabrics were much different than theirs. It is finished and I like it. I suppose that is all that matters. I will post a picture when I get a picture.
Now to start the Halloween wall hanging. That should be fun .A big spooky house on a hill.
Oh I was asked to make a purse for a gal who wanted to gift it to her friend. She showed up to lunch with all her things in a paper bag! I kid you not. I don't usually do requests, but, she is a good friend to hubby and works on the children diabetic board.. I did finish that and she paid me a hundred bucks for it. Cool, Huh? Oriental fabrics in a bucket style purse. I used anodized black grommets and a suede drawstring. It did come out nice. A vogue pattern.
Now off to the workroom to sew.
Happy sewing to you girls!

Julienm1 05-27-2022 12:25 PM

OMG>>>I'm making progsress!
Finished one charity quilt. Just waiting to be w/d.
Glue basted 2nd quilt and marked it for grid quilting. Glue needs to dry a little more before I quilt it.
Cut half of the blocks I need for next charity quilt.
Can I find something else to do before I get lost in the fabric room. (Why is when I really want the kids to stop by they don't?)

Hey all,
I finished quilting the inner borders of the Snail's Trail Al Fresco. All that's left is to decide if I want to quilt the individual snails or leave them be. I also need to do some piano key quilting from the inner borders to the edge of the quilt all around, but that should be a fairly quick undertaking. Yay! For now, it's on the design wall waiting for me to make a decision.

Next up: working on the Sunflower Illusions paper piecing. I think I'll spend the rest of the day today and maybe some time tonight after dinner working on the large arcs. I'd love to get them finished this weekend so I can piece them together.

Here's the Snail Trail so far:

Rob

Wow everyone has made some wonderful progress today!

Railroaders- Love your GFG, looking forward to seeing your progress on it!

Rryder- Wowzers, that is beautiful!

I got diddly quilty stuff done today! I had all my flowerbeds changed from wood mulch to river rock, and bed planting to planters and after 3 days it’s done and looks amazing! While the landscaper was working on the final touches I decided to clean house rather than get interrupted while sewing. House is now spotless, laundry done, the yard looks fabulous and I got all the planters and other decor back in place, and the best part is no more hours upon hours of weeding and more time for quilting or other fun things. I should be able to get the binding sewn on 2 quilts tomorrow so I at least have hand work in the evenings. Looks like my thread is in limbo somewhere so I doubt it will make it here in time for me to get my last quilt going on the longarm.

LAF2019 05-27-2022 01:14 PM

rryder - love the quilting on that, especially those stars that float into the border. looks great!

love following everyone's progress,I hope to work on the quilting for a red/cream jewel box quilt i have on the long arm.

cherrybsixty 05-27-2022 08:36 PM

Good evening everyone, I almost thought that I missed the VQW, but I see that everyone is quite busy and getting a lot done.

Rob, that quilting is fabulous. Everyone else work sounds amazing.

I am only working on some needlework this time. I got started when I went back to Kansas a couple months ago and I can't stop.

You all have fun piecing and quilting and enjoy your holiday, I will be lurking around--cherrybsixty

Railroadersbrat 05-28-2022 12:48 AM

Saturday morning - I'm getting a late start to my day, I found out that my older sister, her son and my best friend's husband all have Covid and my allergies was outrageous, so I had to take a Benadryl and slept most of the day.

Rob - that quilt is beautiful, love those bright colors with the Snails Trail block.

Today, I'm sewing more white on more flowers and get the pieces cut for the paths around them, I went with a deep burgundy color and will be doing diamonds and triangles. My goal before I go to bed is concentrating on the paths and try to get some of them glue basted on their forms and hopefully start sewing flowers together, I have a limited number of hexagon forms, once I get the paths on the flowers that are done now, that'll free up more hexagons for me to work with. I hope that makes sense, lol.

WMUTeach 05-28-2022 03:28 AM

My guild is having a quilt work day today, so I am packing up the materials, tools and FW to spend the day working on catching up on my guild mystery quilt for this year.

Finished the pastel baby top and it will go along with me to layer this morning. That means quilting it tonight or tomorrow.
Found more crazy HST's from a quilt I made about 6 years ago. They have become the center of another baby quilt. Not on my plan for the weekend but needs only one more round of sashing. Found a piece for the back from stash. So it looks like I am in a "use up the scraps groove". Feels good.

By Monday night I should have progress to show!

Raggiemom 05-28-2022 04:23 AM

Thimblebug6000--hand binding isn't being an underachiever--that would take me all weekend!

Gemm--hope you had fun at the quilt shop

QuiltBaer--my mom and I were just in West Virginia for a brief vacation. We stayed in Inwood; drove to Gettysburg and Harpers Ferry. Hit quilt shops in Martinsburg, Hagerstown and Winchester.

SusieQOH--I don't know about you but my sewing room always needs cleaning! :)

donac--hope your mom and sister are feeling much better

I finished the lap quilt and paper pieced pillow yesterday. Started cutting out strips for another ufo. Only cut one color though; hopefully get the rest cut over the weekend. Today I'm off to LQS to quilt with friends. Last night I drew lines on 160 squares to make flying geese today.

I will check back in later.

sewingpup 05-28-2022 07:33 AM

Ughhh! No sewing yesterday, I knew another mouse had entered my car as I could smell him and there was a smear of blood on the mouse trap so I did a car search yesterday which I also knew would be my last chance for a few rainy days. Yep found him dead! So I did a search of the car looking for seeds, nesting, droppings. Luckily did not find much of anything. Took out the floor mats, spare tire, all my stuff, vacuumed, wiped what I could down with sanitizing wipes, then sprayed the car with lysol. Let it air out for a couple of hours. Then applied peppermint essential oil to my mouse deterrent sacks, sprayed the tire wells with mice deterrent spray, and prepared the mouse trips for bait. (still need to get those set). If anyone has any ideas let me know! I have thought about getting a barn cat or two but I am allergic to cats. I live by a large wooded area and apparently, we have a lot of wood mice.I don't have a garage. Hopefully today, I can get back to the stitching, although I am pretty stiff from yesterday. So glad to hear so many of you are stitching away!

rryder 05-28-2022 10:33 AM

Thanks everyone!
Sound like everyone is getting lots done.
I spent all morning paper piecing the large arcs for the Judy Niemeyer Sunflower Illusions quilt. I managed to get 4 done...I already had 3, so that means I only have 23 more to go...Son and Daughter-in-law coming for dinner around 4 so may get another 1 or 2 done before they get here. I had forgotten how long it takes to piece those parts. I think I'll modify my ambition of getting them all done this weekend since I'm needing to have something (anything!) finished. I'm going to try finishing up the Snail's trail quilting tomorrow and work on getting it bound on Monday. If there's time after that I'll put the borders on my October color block quilt and maybe resume quilting my doodle quilt that got put on hold so I could quilt the Snail Trail beastie.

Happy Quilting!
Rob

Julienm1 05-28-2022 11:42 AM

I pieced the baby quilt today. I spent too much time yesterday looking for background fabrics! Anyway, the backing fabric
is loaded on the quilting machine and I will quilt it tomorrow. I'm going to a concert with friends tonight. Hope everyone is
enjoying the weekend!

Here is the bargello tree skirt all finished. I like it despite the trouble I had with the pattern from shabby fabrics. I got side tracked with the halloween hanger and made a sewing machine mug rug instead. I figured I needed a small project first. Know what I mean?
Thimblebug love your quilt.

Raggiemom 05-28-2022 03:16 PM

Love all the pictures showing off your work! Had a great time quilting with friends today (and shopping the holiday sales at the shop:) ) Made what seemed like 1000 flying geese and have at least that many more to make. The entire quilt is flying geese so there are many of them. Will check back in tomorrow afternoon.

Railroadersbrat 05-29-2022 03:21 AM

Sunday morning - not much done last night - fiancé decided that a big mess of hot wings were in order and hot sauce and fabric don't play well together, lol. I managed to get the first flower ringed with diamonds and triangles to start putting them together and I'm working on attaching the second flower now. Hoping before I go to bed to have it attached fully and that flower ringed with the path. Pictures will follow.

Such pretty quilts everyone is working on!

tallchick 05-29-2022 03:38 AM

Everyone has been so busy! I got the binding on both quilts so now I have hand work for at least this week as I finish sewing it down, I am a slow binder! Today I am going to start prepping the fabric for my next quilt and do up a few hanging flower baskets too.

Vicki Di 05-29-2022 05:39 AM

Hi all. My first time on a thread here other than to introduce myself. Yesterday hubby and I moved some very heavy furniture (that had to be emptied first of course) and I rearranged a bedroom - to make room for my new 201!! Now that’s done I’ll do some sewing today. Ready to start something new. My problem is always-what on my list of 25 “next” projects to start! I tend to work on one thing at a time. Although I’d like to train myself to have 2 going at once. I have several bags to make for Christmas but I also have half the cutting done for a Chandelier quilt so maybe will do that one. Happy quilting!

rryder 05-29-2022 06:35 AM

Welcome, Vicki Di!

cute baby quilt, QuilteBaer- I love the colors!

congratulations on your finishes, Red Garnet and Thimblebug!

I hear you tallchick- hand stitching the binding to the back of a quilt always seems to take forever!

I'm still trying to get all the quilting finished on the Snails Trail Al Fresco- I've decided to just ditch the individual snails and then do some piano keys at the edge to stabilize it. Hopefully I can get that all completed today or tomorrow.

Rob
