Virtual Quilting Weekend--Nov 26-29, 2020

Welcome to our special Virtual Quilting Weekend and Happy Thanksgiving to the Americans :) I have but one project on my list for the weekend. It's my November UFO challenge--a Quiltsmart dahlia top. I hope to have the top done by the end of the weekend. Then I can spend next week catching up on the double wedding ring quilt along and the paper piecing quilt along I am doing with one of the local shops. And of course start the December UFO which is to finish a feathered star I started a few years ago.

What will you be working on? I will pop in and out as I have the Thanksgiving meal to prepare for my husband (Thanksgiving is the best holiday according to him!) and will be decorating for Christmas also.

The next regularly scheduled VQW is December 18-20 and then a special New Year's Eve/New Year's Day VQW.

Good evening Heather and fellow quilters.
I’m working on quilting & binding a 85” square quilt. I’m in the process of putting it on the long arm. Friday start working on clue 1 of BHMQ 2020 (that’s what I call it). In between time start on the Pat Sloan’s Christmas in July snowflake mystery steps, Then Try to catch up on 2 BOW projects I started earlier this month. I’ll post pics when I complete a project.

IrishNY 11-25-2020 05:35 PM

I have got to finish my DGD 's quilt and get going on one for my DGS, so I'm in. In between T-giving tasks and other projects. Not enough hours.... :)

quiltingshorttimer 11-25-2020 05:42 PM

normally I'd have a house full of kids/grandkids. But this year it's just the 2 of us, so I'm in! Hubs will be writing and watching sports on tv. So I need to quilt 2 table runners, put some borders on a panel and then quilt 2 of them for more table toppers--bind all 4 and start the fusible on another quilt.

Julienm1 11-25-2020 06:14 PM

I'll be working on my Project Linus quilts. One top done today, pieced not quilted, and my goal is 5 more. Just DH and me and he cooks so I sew. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

donac 11-25-2020 06:35 PM

I am in. I am with my mother and my sister tonight since mom just got out of the hospital. I will be heading home tomorrow around noon and cooking dinner for husband and myself. Then I am going to be hand quilting a Christmas quilt for our bed. I started it a couple of weeks ago. I know I won't be able to finish it but it will be nice to get some more if it done.

Excellent! I'm actually happy I don't have to attend the usually very large family dinner this year, I'm just not terribly at ease in large gatherings. Happy to stitch and chat. I just finished a cover for my vsm, so now it's back to quilting! I dug out the squares I made from a few jelly rolls I had on hand, some batik, some shot cottons. It was the "tube" method of creating diagonal stripes, which I found fun. Now, it's all about playing with color and movement!

mrs. fitz 11-25-2020 08:57 PM

I'm going to try and do it and not feel guilty. I hope to finish a lap quilt I'm making for my oldest stepdaughter and quick patchwork Christmas runners for all four of my stepdaughters and my SDIL. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Oh good! Thank you for hosting Raggiemom https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

I have a mish-mash of things. I need to take a decent photo of my November penguin and post it to the appropriate thread here, continue with handquilting my pumpkins wallhanging, and progress my Moda project bags (I'm doing a lot of 'firsts' with those bags - first time quilting with a domestic machine, first time using vinyl, first time inserting a zip - now I think of it, first time making a bag! Am still at the quilting stage rather than any further, but I'm quite pleased with the results). There's also my Stars Sampler, on which I seem to have stalled - top is assembled, but it needs de-papering.

Plus I want to do some Christmas ornaments in felt (animals) - not sure I'll get to that. Or maybe I should prioritise it, given the date? Hmm....

Plus there is all the prep for 2 December birthdays and Christmas. Double hmm...

Well, I won't be bored!! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it!

Rff1010 11-26-2020 01:23 AM

I finished a quilt top yesterday....so I guess I am in! I'm going to hold my own feet to the fire and finish borders on something else and then I will have 2 to do basting and quilting. The one I just finished is an Oh Susannah quilt block in earth tones. The other remaining is strips of this awesome licence plate fabric. I'm going to fmq the 50 states and give to a friend who spends summer in the road in their travel camper (well, not 2020 but y'all get the picture).

Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

WMUTeach 11-26-2020 03:14 AM

I have my normal long list of little unfinished projects but I will try to limit myself to reality.
1. Add binding to the three Mini Charming Trees.
2. Make sashing for my Ice Leopard Mystery quilt.
3. Make 2 sets of potholders for gifts

Between projects I want to put up Christmas decorations and nibble on leftovers. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif

Mkotch 11-26-2020 03:26 AM

I'll be cooking a small T'giving dinner and visiting with grown son and DH most of today. Maybe I'll do a little knitting while chatting. Tomorrow I'll start Bonnie Hunter's mystery. All of the fabric I've pulled is on the bed in the guest/sewing room. Luckily, we have no guests this year. Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Julienm1 11-26-2020 03:28 AM

GOOD MORINING, QUILTERS! Waiting for DH to get up so I can make coffee. I make SO much noise! Dug out some scraps last night and found LOTS OF 2" hst that I'll use for centers of my scrappy blocks but centers won't ALWAYS be centered...like me! Catch up with you guys later. I'm starting to hear the hum of sewing machines, https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

zennia 11-26-2020 03:38 AM

Hello, I was going to mail my granddaughter her Christmas quilt/tablecloth but decided it would cost too much to mail so I will be busy making her a Christmas table runner of some sort.

Julienm1 11-26-2020 05:36 AM

Time out for breakfast. DH brought in corn beef hash w/poached egg. I knew there was a reason I keep him around!

Watson 11-26-2020 05:40 AM

My 'circle" wall hanging is almost put together so that will come off the design wall sometime this weekend, I hope.

I have finally made enough string blocks to put together a quilt, so I am sewing blocks together. I have only been working on this project at my Tuesday Sew Club, so it's taken quite awhile to get this far!

Pictures if I get anywhere with them.

Watson

QuiltMom2 11-26-2020 05:46 AM

Count me in! 1) Make and attach binding to twin size quilt, 2) finish piecing back and hopefully edge-to-edge quilt 46 x 54" I-spy quilt, 3) make 2 more quilted market bags (one for a birthday the other for Christmas) gifts. I have made a lot of bags for church bazaar that never happened and I may just wimp out and get one bag from there.

retiredteacher09 11-26-2020 06:27 AM

Thanks for hosting again, Raggiemom.

I plan to finish a quilt top. I need to sew the sections together and add borders. My leader/ender projects are waiting beside my machine.

Iceblossom 11-26-2020 07:22 AM

Hello all! I am feeling much better physically than I was last virtual weekend but I am sure still in the "non productive" camp. Today is pretty much just Thursday around here and I need to get sewing.

My Frolic UFO is behind schedule but close! But am not going to have the top put together "by" today or even "today". I have all pieces made for the top, it is laid out, and I'm putting blocks into rows while also making the borders.

So I better get off the computer and behind the sewing machine. Haven't done anything since I pinned blocks together at my Tuesday group. Attached is the rough layout of the top, it was fine-tuned a bit to balance out the blocks. I'm not doing Bonnie's border, I'm just making Flying Geese units out of the HST, emphasizing the neutrals.

QuiltingVagabond 11-26-2020 07:48 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to all the VQW gang! My daughter and I are swapping dishes in a little while, each eating in our own homes this year. I will be working on clue one of the Bonnie Hunter mystery starting tomorrow. Maybe I will get some quilting done too. I always procrastinate that part!

thimblebug6000 11-26-2020 08:05 AM

I started Bonnie Hunter's Scrappy Trips at my Virtual quilt retreat Nov 6th, so hope to add a plain border, and then cut and add a pieced border to that today. It's another rainy Thursday here, and happy to have leftovers in the fridge for our meal.... Happy Thanksgiving to all the American Quilters, enjoy your special day!

rryder 11-26-2020 08:31 AM

Thanks for hosting, Raggiemom!

I'm in. We are doing a zoom chat with friends this afternoon, but otherwise it's just the two of us this year. I'm still working on the Big Butterfly. I have nearly ripped out all the quilting I did on the borders- I apparently had not checked my tension when I started it and the back needed help, so... anyway. I will finish getting the stitching ripped out today. Then I want to decide what to do about the front borders. Unfortunately it was one of my paint/dyed fabrics where I got a little heavy handed with the paint which means that all the stitching holes show on the front and they're not going to close up so I have several choices, either 1. try and get every new stitch into the exact same place as the old (https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wave.gif); 2. hope that with enough quilting the holes won't show up (https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/shock.png); 3. change the fabric out (https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/confused.png); 4. layer fabric over and quilt (https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png); or 5.re-quilt by couching some decorative threads down to hide the holes ( https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/cool.png). Not going to do 1st or 2nd option, but options 3, 4 and 5 offer a chance to play some more with design. It'll be fun.....

Rob

Julienm1 11-26-2020 08:47 AM

Spent the last hour looking for dark/lights and was successful. Decided to turn these little blocks into log cabin. So now the sewing can begin after I have some well deserved chocolate.

Fabric Galore 11-26-2020 08:49 AM

I want to clean up my sewing room. I finished sewing my Christmas gifts and I need to put everything away and then I want to start a quilt for a great grandson due in December. Thanks for hosting this weekend.

juliasb 11-26-2020 08:54 AM

Well it is that time again. I won't get anything started until Friday and then maybe I will be able to complete a project I have a new package of batting and a fresh from the repair shop machine to work on and do some quilting. Today I am making the smallest turkey I have ever made. 9.2lbs! Last years was 24lbs. But this year it is just DH and I. Not only because we are not going anywhere but because we have been directly exposed to the virus. Our communion minister and very dear friend called yesterday to tell us both he and his wife are infected. He was only here on Sat and Sunday last weekend. He is one of the only people we have had in our home in months. He told us he was being as safe as possible and has even been working from home since all this started. Just shows anyone at anytime can be at risk. So sewing I will do and stay posted on my progress for the weekend. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and now out to the kitchen.

Irishrose2 11-26-2020 09:17 AM

I won't have much time to sew this weekend, but I would like to square up the blocks for a baby quilt and get another pin basted. My leaders and enders at this time are another quilt - a wedding one. I have to be careful with color placement on that one. Thank goodness for a seam ripper and short seams.
I have a small turkey to cook and my cranberry bread is done. The only good thing about being alone is that I can have what I want.

tropit 11-26-2020 09:57 AM

OK...I'm doing this! I got side tracked last month, so I really have a lot to catch up on. Today, I'm finishing my holiday face masks. They're cute and cheerful and I hope that my family will wear them when they go out and about. Tomorrow, I'm back to quilting my DH's quilt in a wood grain pattern. I've got about 25% of it done so far. I hope that I can finish the quilting and maybe even the binding this weekend. I have other projects waiting in the wings.

I finished this one last night. It was a kit and there is enough left over to make it again if I can find the panel.

homefrontgirl 11-26-2020 10:26 AM

Count me in! I finished quilted Christmas stockings yesterday and then started on a new tree skirt with a holiday themed jelly roll. I'll finish that up today. Maybe. I also have a Bionic Gear Bag cut out and waiting to sew together. It will be the third one I've made. I want to use this one for knitting notions.

Super excited for the Merry Mayhem Mystery Quilt fabric requirements being released this weekend (she said Thanksgiving weekend but I'm hoping she's maybe including tomorrow in that because I can't wait) I did last year's and it came out great. Of course, once my fabric is chosen I have the loooooong wait until New Year's Day for the rest lol

petthefabric 11-26-2020 10:48 AM

I'm in. But will probably start tomorrow. Today is being Thankful. Since my sleep was disturbed at ~5:00, decided to call our daughter (she's always been with us at Thanksgiving but Florida is a bit of a commute). Yes, she moved from Ca to Fl this month and her time is 3 hrs before us, so 5=8:00am. She's busy getting her new house a home. Sherwin Williams has a sale of 30 % until the end of Nov, so that's #1 priority, now. Then got DH up to talk with her. After finding out more info, ordered Amaryllis to be shipped to her for Christmas.
Started cooking for TG'ing. Made cranberry sause + no sugar cranberry sauce yesterday. Today, made stuffing/dressing. We going to a couple from our super small church. We just started going so we'll get acquainted better. She wanted us to come early and cook with her. So mashed potatoes, rolls and green beans will be made there. When it's just 5 people, it's not all that hard.
Tonight, I'll probably crash early. So tomorrow will be quilting.
Off to shower and wash hair.

Okay, I’m in https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/hunf.png I have a nice four day weekend and there are a few projects I would like to finish.

retiredteacher09 11-26-2020 01:13 PM

juliasb: Sending prayers of protection your way.

My son, DIL, and 9 month old grandson FaceTimed me. My oldest son also was around to interact with Jack. He was in his high chair and was super smiley and giggly. I look forward to cuddling him soon.

Great projects already being shown. I got sidetracked a few times already today but my side borders are on my UFO top. Time to head downstairs and put the side borders on it. I have blocks ready to put up on the design wall for another quilt top that I’m designing as I go. ❤️

Quiltah Mama 11-26-2020 02:00 PM

Oh how awesome! I am so in this weekend. I have been commissioned to make a quilt. I cut it out last night, and have started sewing it this AM. I am working on Harmony by GE Designs. I am also following her quilt along on YouTube for the pattern. I have never done a quilt along, and am rather enjoying it. I will post pictures later in the weekend of my progress.
i look forward to checking in and seeing everyone's work. Happy quilting everyone.😍

Great to see so many folks together sewing this weekend!

Thanks, petthefabric (whose name always gives me a smile!)
Love the Christmas quilt, Kathy...it's one holiday I don't have an overstock of fabric for for some reason?

Having fun today, just the hubby and me and the cats hanging around, and we're doing a super simple dinner at 6. So I've gotten a few squares sewn together with interruptions for video calls with family, lunch, playing w/cats. Nice day. I've got a small crisis - I've run out of design wall, lol! I'm going to have to get creative and take it around the corner I think?? :D

Julienm1 11-26-2020 02:30 PM

It's taken me the best part of the day to figure out fabric for this log cabin scrappy quilt. Finally got my act together, pulled JUST lights and JUST darks and, cutting 2" strips. One container for L and one for D. Tomorrow I should be able to sew with reckless abandon. Just need to continue cutting and then put ALL THIS FABRIC BACK! I think I need to reread the organization thread again...lol

quiltingshorttimer 11-26-2020 05:07 PM

does thinking about going to a LQS tomorrow to get enough fabric to finish a table runner , backing and fusible counts as getting anything done then I was a success! LOL actually spent day cooking dinner and Zooming with family and reading for the first time my DH's newest detective novel, got no sewing done. Tomorrow!

Quiltah Mama: I made Harmony. I just did the top and then gave it to my church group to finish. It sure is easy to make especially with her rulers.

Cheshirepat: It’s definitely getting bigger! I love it!

Julie: I feel your pain! I’ve been digging through boxes to find fabrics for sashing, borders, and Flying Geese. Once I finish the FG blocks, then I can put that fabric away. Hopefully, that will happen tomorrow. The rest is put in the appropriate spot.

Well, I finished my UFO top. It measures 70.5” by 81”. It was cut with an AccuQuilt die. Now on to the next project.
