Virtual Quilting Weekend--Oct 3-5, 2020

Good evening quilters! Welcome to October's Virtual Quilting Weekend. What are your plans/goals for this weekend? I have a couple quilt tops I would like to quilt and bind. There are also some hand work projects to make progress on. I started some wool Christmas ornaments last weekend. I'm ready to start the lazy daisy stitch, this is a new stitch for me. I need a little more practice with it I think. Before I start any work though I need to spend an hour and put some things away in the sewing room.

If you're new and you're wondering what this is all about, we quilt together "virtually". We share what we're working on, including pictures sometimes. We love to "meet" new people :) Any questions, just ask.

Next VQW is November 7-9, 2020.

Working on a wedding quilt. The couple is moving to Japan very soon, so I need to get it done. The FMQ has started.

retiredteacher09 10-01-2020 04:13 PM

I’m in. I will be finishing a top with blocks from a project that turned UFO recently. I’m changing up the pattern to my liking.

Thanks for hosting again, Heather!

We are leaving for a camping trip Sunday and I plan to take some sewing along. 2 tops to bind and some masks to make. Not sure if much sewing will happen before then as I still have some packing to do. But maybe. I need to make a bag to protect my new to me Sew Steady table and maybe I will find time to do the quilting on the outside fabric.

NZquilter 10-01-2020 05:37 PM

I'm going to try really hard to join in this weekend! I've been so busy, homeschooling my kindergartener and chasing after two toddlers and pregnant, I am having sewing withdrawals! Even if all I can make is a couple of blocks for my scrappy quilt, I'll be happy. Tomorrow I have an OBGYN appointment and then some grocery shopping, but I might get some sewing in the afternoon.

sewbizgirl 10-01-2020 06:55 PM

NZquilter... suddenly your family size has doubled! Hope you are feeling well and keeping up with the kiddos. Surely this baby is the boy.... I have a third grandchild coming in March of 2021!

I'm glad to have a VQW. i just finished my round robin round today, so don't have that to work on, but I will be making the blocks for the boom swap, Pumpkins. Also need to work on my ornament for the ornament swap.

Barb in Louisiana 10-01-2020 08:04 PM

I plan to figure out where I was on a Judy Neimeyer quilt that I started a couple of years ago. Maybe I can get sewing on it again.

WMUTeach 10-02-2020 02:39 AM

I am so "in". This was to have been my guild's retreat week-end but it was cancelled because of....you know what. I am in mourning.
So my list to do this week-end
1. Finish piecing blue donation quilt.
2. Layer and quilt green donation quilt.
3. Make a choice of fabrics for baby quilt. (Too many choices and this is a special family baby.)
4. Cut pieces for Chemo Pouches
5. Maybe a mask or two from the new pattern.

Battle Axe 10-02-2020 02:48 AM

Barb in Louisiana, please post pics as you progress on the Judy Neimeyer. It all may seem simple to skilled people, like you, but to me for one am totally intimidated.

I've decided to keep the long arm and get the software, also put casters on the frame so I can move it. Also, found the Snake River book and several others hiding among the cookbooks.

luvstoquilt 10-02-2020 04:47 AM

I seem to be overwhelmed right now. I have so many projects ready to start and am not sure which one I will do first! I am really trying not to add more before I get these done. I think I will make a list and do a bit of reorganization.😁

juliasb 10-02-2020 05:58 AM

It's hard to believe it is time for another VQW already. I have a number of things on my plate. I need to put a binding on one quilt and I have a number of blocks to do for a swap. I would like to get at least 6 blocks done for the swap and get the binding done. The binding should be priority #1. I have one block on the machine right now and that I will finish before I start the binding. That should fill the entire weekend. IF the weather brightens up with no rain I also have to take a break and get in the garden and do some clean uphttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png. It has to be done on a clear day.

rryder 10-02-2020 06:15 AM

I’m in. Will be continuing the border quilting on the big butterfly.

Somehow when I started this thread last night, I put it in the wrong place! I'm sorry about the mix-up :(. I have asked the administrator to move the thread to the Main section.

After grocery shopping and housework earlier today, I picked up my sewing room and finished a couple small projects. Tomorrow I'll have to see what project appeals to me to work on. I'm glad to see there are so many of you quilting with me already :)

I made a some progress this afternoon. I only made one block which got me to the halfway point of this lap quilt, but I'm happy. Pattern is Impressionist Wreaths from Quilted Twins.

I'm in! Told the fiance he was on his own this weekend because I was going to quilt. We're still deep cleaning/de-spidering but I need a break. Started my sister's DWR, will post a pic later.

Love it, Cathy! That pattern is on my Quilted Twins bucket list.

I need to get an ugly brown quilt top put together and quilt it. I call it ugly b/c it only has different shades of dark brown 10” squares sewn together and the backing is dark dark brown as well. The guy just wants an 84” by 84” warm fluffy quilt. Then quilt a small baby quilt and sew together 2-3 project Linus tops and machine bind a Linus quilt for guild. If I have time after those projects then finish my 100 block challenge top. I started this top over 3 months ago. I’m curious how it will look all sewn together. I only have 8 more blocks to do then Square all blocks and sew the blocks together. That should keep me entertained for 3 days. Happy sewing everyone.

Thanks! It's nice to do some simple sewing of just squares. Very relaxing!

I'm in--did all my lawn chores today (sunny) so I could sew all weekend. Will load a quilt onto the long arm tomorrow morning, get some pictures and load up on new computer which has a great drawing program so I can figure out what to quilt--will do that in front of tv tomorrow night. And then in afternoon, will either put together the pieces of my first Judy Niemeyer quilt (Sunflower Illusions) or pull out embroidery blocks and get sashing and borders on them.

retiredteacher09 10-02-2020 07:10 PM

NZquilter: Very pretty.

I made some progress on my UFO. I now have the blocks in 4 diagonal rows sewn together. The other rows are on my design wall waiting patiently. Lol!

I made a mask for my oldest son. I also assembled a fabric book panel for my 8 month old grandson for his baptism on Sunday.

My main goal for tomorrow will be assembling the UFO blocks into rows and, possibly, making a taggie square for my grandson.

I look forward to checking in later tomorrow.

.

I’m in, too! I removed the borders on the quilt that I’m fixing today. Tomorrow I’ll pick some stitches next to the spots that need fixing and then I can hopefully sew them again without having to pull entire rows apart. I will probably also sandwich the Double Slice quilt I’m working on.

On a side note, I discovered while picking just how little I knew when I pieced this quilt. I used a sort of locking stitch (?) on the borders which was a pain to un-sew. I’m actually kind of glad I took this on as it shows me how much I’ve learned and how much my skills have improved.

To round out the week, I was asked by a dear friend and her husband to make some quilts for each of their daughters today as Christmas gifts. I love them so dearly and I’m honored that they would ask me to do this for them. They want throw size quilts and have said they will pay me. I may go to their house tomorrow to talk patterns and fabric. If they want them for Christmas, I will need to start now. Thankfully all of my other work is without a deadline. 😊

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/tongue.png Thanks for hosting! I am to the finish line for our guild's challenge due at the Oct. meeting. I will share photos of my challenge project after our Oct. meeting. (so the guild president doesn't see it on this thread.) Stay tuned. :)

Yay! I missed this thread when I looked last night, but here you are!! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

I will be working on the newly released October block for the Penguin Promenade BOM, trying to sort out some framing for my Stars Sampler UFO before I figure out sashing and borders, and cutting my hair https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png.

This week I'm feeling accomplished anyway, as I finally sent off a longstanding UFO to be longarmed. I'm a bit apprehensive since I've never had anything longarmed long-distance (by post) before, but am pleased that I got up the courage to try (and the top I sent is far too big for me to do myself). She has a waiting list, so it'll likely be next year before it comes back, but I'm fine with that. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/cool.png

So far this morning I have also hung some pictures in my sewing room (I'm doing a gallery wall of family photos, mementos, and sentimental pictures - but doing it very gradually). So that's productive too.

I'm going to try and post a photo of my design wall with the blocks for my Stars Sampler - I plan to frame each block in the greeny vine fabric, and sash with the cream rosebud. And then we'll see where we are (I'm making this one up as I go along, lol)

Happy Quilting everyone

QuiltMom2 10-03-2020 03:29 AM

I've got a big piecing project (I'm having to assemble the top in sections, on point four-patches) that is 60% done. I also have a small Christmas angel panel quilt on the longarm probably 50% quilted. I have somehow acquired four quilt repair projects (argh!) one of which was paid for in a barter arrangement: this gentleman trimmed the overgrown bushes in front of my house. The repair job will be my priority, but in places I'm having to conjure fabric out of thin air!

Panchita, I like your star blocks and color choices. The one in the bottom right corner is my favorite. It love how it tricks the eye.

Hi everyone and I really need this weekend. I have a project, this month's round robin round that is in progress but I have stalled this past week. It's a lovely project with lovely fabric and I want to work on it but I've been distracted.

I had a wonderful 60th birthday road trip since last Virtual Weekend going through the fires and the plague from Seattle to Sacramento, CA and back. It rained just wonderfully after we got back, but now the rain has stopped and the smoke is back. It is just so bad... I do have compromised lungs and while it doesn't quite hurt to breathe, I feel every breath. I wake up because I can't breathe and cough for about the first two hours of the day. And then I sit around and grumble.

Well, grumbles be done -- I've got sewing to do and virtual companions to do it with. Thanks to Reggie and all of you!

I'm really hoping to get my medallion quilt assembled this weekend. I've got most of the components done now, so it's putting it all together.

This quilt started out as a center for another project, but after doing the center I changed direction and that quilt got a new center and this one ended up in a tote for several years. I joined the round robin going on right now and was going to use this center, but after working with it a bit more, decided I wanted to keep it for myself as I found quite a bit of yardage of border fabric that went with it.

This is what I did this morning. these will be the inner most corner. that frames the center. I had done the paper peiced corners earlier this week, and got it all cut out as of yesterday. So today was layout and assembly!

The last picture is the layout of the quilt - I only drew up one quarter, since they are mirrored pairs. The long empty "rows" are where the border fabric goes.

Railroadersbrat 10-03-2020 07:21 AM

Here this morning, have had one of those morning's where I have two left feet, two right hands, and half a pot of coffee later, things are finally settling down.

I put a new design wall up this morning, just a flannel backed tablecloth that I cut in half and I haven't had time to dig my steamer out to clear out the wrinkles, but my sister's DWR is on it. I did a good cleaning on my old girl and we're just purring along at a decent clip, I do love it when we're in-sync like this. I'll post a pic shortly of my progress.

Thank you, Raggiemom for hosting again, you are absolutely the hostess with the mostest!

beckyboo1 10-03-2020 07:23 AM

I'm in. I need to cut and stitch together a binding for a baby quilt and also need to get that baby quilt to the longarmer. Also need to work on piecing backing for baby grandson's quilt that will be given for Christmas. I have 2 more I need to make for the other grandsons for Christmas but have only decided on one pattern so far so if time allows, can get some pieces cut. Thinking of a short trip to an antique mall for things to decorate my sewing room with. I'll probably run out of weekend before I get much accomplished though lol

Needed to make more coffee and fill my iron, so snapped a picture while I waited for it to brew.

I'm having fun putting this quilt together, but one thing I didn't expect is that I'm sometimes getting creases in my arcs when I press. It's not happening that often but when it does, it startles me, so I dug out my mini-iron, I'm hoping that'll fix the issue.

sewbizgirl 10-03-2020 09:27 AM

Panchita, your star blocks are so gorgeous! Great work.

juliasb 10-03-2020 09:34 AM

I have only managed to get one block made so far. I got up feeling pretty punk and went back and laid down until about noon. That is late for this early bird. Once I had a couple cups of coffee I got busy and made a single Hunter Star. I want to get at least one more made before the end of the day. Who knows maybe another one too. Looking more like the binding I was hoping to complete will wait for another day. It will be completed in the next week or so however. I need to finish it. My primary sewing machine went out on me a couple days ago. I am using my FW and I use this machine so carefully. I am very protective of my FW's..

beckyboo1 10-03-2020 09:48 AM

Oh! How could I have forgotten I need to sew the rows together on my Halloween quilt? I can't procrastinate on it any longer

RedGarnet222 10-03-2020 09:57 AM

Great projects ladies! I have a Halloween banner in my sights to make, But, after finishing up a dozen charity donations and repairing and altering a few winter clothing items I had stacked up fabrics. useable scraps and patterns to make a mess to clear and clean my sewing room. That is what I will be doing this weekend. Sad but true. I hate feeling closed in by clutter.

Sync 10-03-2020 10:47 AM

Everyone’s projects are looking great. On my agenda today is to finish clue 3 of the Cotton Cuts mystery.

Yesterday, bought fabric. Get it washed and ready to start 3 charity quilts (most of those will be from stash). And the other is for backs. So to dress, wash fabric, plant 2 pots at the church. Then quilt the rest of the day.

VQW - Progress

I will try again. Deleted my original post a few minutes ago. Here is proof positive that I have finished the top for this donation quilt. I may add a cream border or just layer and quilt, but not this week-end. I must move on to other of my VQW goals.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 08:18 PM.
