I was told by a non-quilting friend that my local Walmart had some bolts of fabric back on the shelves, so I had to go see for myself. Yup, she was right. They are now just beginning to get the fabric back and are stocking the shelves. The best thing though, is that all the pre-cuts are now on clearance for $2.00. Couldn't resist buying some! A fellow that works there, don't know if he was the manager, said that they listened to all the requests to bring the fabric back, and that they will be posting a message in the store by the fabric regarding all the requests. Some of the fabric is the same as the fabric lines that they had carried before. Pricing is a little higher, some at $4.95. He also told me that our local store had sold the most fabric in the state. Can't understand why they would have gotten rid of it if that was true! So, I hope the rest of you get your fabric back too!

We were lucky and never lost the fabric dept. in one of the two Walmarts in our town. The dept. did get rather skimpy on fabric, but now is looking so much better.
ohhhhh, I'm hopeing......... have to drive almost an hour each way to get to a wally that has ANY fabric right now....please please please!!!!
We did not lose our fabric at our wally world, and they are putting in so much more...talked to the salesgirl and she said they never were going to close it, and they had a lot of responses. That is why we love America, we can let people know what we like without fear of retailation...
According to the fabric department manager, we were subject to losing our fabrics as well. There was so much pressure from the customers, they have now done some rearranging, added more shelves and completely re-vamped the whole department. Not only is it restocked, but better and newer fabrics have been added. It was truly a joy to shop there today!

that is great news, glad they listened to all of the quilters to bring back fabric

Walmart was the only place that had a good selection of seasonal fabric. My LQS carries Christmas but not the other holidays. I sure hope that our Walmart brings back bolts but I'm not holding my breath.
Never lost my fabric at either of the Wal-marts I routinely shop at, but it'll be nice to know that others can get their quilting fix.
I just dont get it, I asked the walmart mgr of customer service (couldnt find the store mgr) yesterday and she said they werent bringing back the fabric
The thing is, we dont have a fabric store in town and the closest there is one is 90 min away - so they dont even have anyone selling to complain they would lose business. I have to get the store number and start an email campaign. sharet |
DH works at Walmart. I was up there tonight but didn't see him (he was at home for his lunch) also didn't see the big sign saying Fabric Coming Soon!!!! He asked me when he got home if I noticed it. Guess he will be seeing a lot more of me when he is working :)
I am actually looking forward to them getting fabric - while it may not be LQS quality - times are tough and they do have some nice material. Let's not forget all the other stuff that goes along with it - batting, zippers, thread, scissors, rotary cutters, etc. I have gotten Fiskar scissors there for less than half of what JoAnn Fabrics sells them for!
hope all the stores get it back
go for it. it worked here. even DH's were boycoting the store when they said the dept was going away
Does anyone in denver know if the Walmarts are getting fabrics? I live in the boonies and need to use a cart to get around a store. Walmart would certainly help things out. Makes me smile to think aboutit.
We did not loose our fabric dept but it was downsized. Now they are enlargeing it again. I am glad as it was the only place to buy fabric in our little town.
I hope our WalMart brings fabric back!
since our wallmart remodled its store they have less fabric to choose from,a smaller space and no one to wait on you. Have to go all over the store to find someone to cut a piece of fabric.!
I bought the perfect piece of fleece for a backing for my granddaughter's quilt from Walmart. I only buy quilt shop quality fabrics for my tops but after reading the posts I think I should check out Walmart and Joann's again and see if they can pass the "feel" test.
so far none of our WalMarts are going that route....once gone, fabric is going to stay gone is what I heard. I had good luck with some fabric there - and others, sadly disappointing.
I shop online now for the most part....or go to my LQS. Gotta support them when I can....LQSs have a tough time keeping open in today's economy. Wish I could support them more, but when the price is $7.95 a yard and up, it gets a little tough. |
I am so happy for you :)
I miss my fabric department and now rarely go to Walmart... |
Found the clearance on the pre-cut fabric and brought some home to try.
The 100 percent cotton came out of the wash fine. Have to iron before cutting but this isn't unusual. The colors held good. I'm pleased with my WalMart find In fact I need some more colors |
Why would people use WALMART FABRIC?-I have no problem using it ! You may get an exspensive outdated fabric, or maybe it looks like cheesecloth,- don't buy what is subpar! If you ask a kid in a hospital, a shelter, or a soldier on a ward, or a chemo patient,--would you perfer 1 LQS quilt or would you mind Walmart fabrics, so I could make 3 quilts instead, for others here?Yes its good to like high quality fabrics, BUT WALMART fabrics are also fine, for many things!- My Debbie Mumm fabrics, are for me,& they came from there, at a very good price! I personally can't wait for our reset in AUGUST! I hope I haven't spent all my money on the precut clearance, so I can buy some of the NEW!! LOL!!!
From Harrisonburg, VA: one Walmart eliminated the fabric department. A lot of Old Order Mennonites lost out on buying fabric there. Don't know if the fabric dept. will return.
Another Walmart where I shop minimized the fabric department so Electronics could be enlarged! Now, for sure, come Sept. will be remodeled in some areas bringing back a much larger fabric dept.! I'm glad Walmart listened to our protests! The old "squeaky wheel" theory wins again! |
Good news
I live in southern Ohio. Our Wal Mart eliminated fabrics a while ago. I notice recently that they are putting it back. YEAH! SOme of the fabric is pretty cheap, low quality. But some of it is really nice. Looks like mostly good quality fabric to me. My biggest complaint with Wal Mart fabric has always been finding someone to cut it for me. I will buy from there. Money is tight and I will check the quality but will buy where I can afford.
The local JoAnns is moving and is having a going out of business sale. Going today to see what their discount is. WHen another JaAnns closed I was there the day before it closed and got lots of embroidery thread and some fabric at 90% off. |
I was at out Walmart's yesterday, and saw they were putting our fabric department back. I was so excited.
I worked at the West-End Wal-Mart here in Billings, MT for 7 years. I worked in the fabric department. While I was there our department make 1 million dollars a year on fabric sales. I never figured out why they wanted to cut the departments down or do away with them altogether. They did not remove this stores fabric, but they sure cut it down is size. I'm so glad they have finally come to their senses.
My Wally never lost their fabric but have remodeled the store and moved it to another location nearer the groceries, pet supplies and candy. How lucky can I get? I have to use an electric cart so it does save time. Now if they'd only move the garden shop.........
I've been in several Wal-Marts that are getting bolt fabrics. When I first started quilting I was a fabric snob. It was LQS all the way. As time (years) passed and I know a little more about fabric, I buy fabric from Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's etc but only after feeling it, holding it up to the light etc to make sure it is decent fabric. If I were making an heirloom quilt would I use these fabrics? Probably not, but I'm not making heirloom quilts. I'm making quilts to be used and loved.

Lucky you! Apparently our Walmarts in Canada will NOT be bringing back the bolts of fabric - only precuts.

Of the three local Walmarts here, only one still had fabric. Just like any where you have to be aware of what you are buying. There is good quality and bad quality every place you shop
Was at my local Walmart yesterday and YES they are bring back fabric...they had all the table assembled that holds the bolts, and confirmed with the store manager and district manager (all in their pretty white shirts) that indeed it is back, and department should be fully stocked by the middle of next week. When you are on a limited income and with the price of gas, having only to drive a mile to my walmart for fabric also, is going to be so nice.

This started out as an announcement that some WalMart stores are getting fabric on bolts back.
Some people are very happy about it. This thread was probably NOT started for another debate of the quality of fabrics purchased at WalMart. There are a gazillion on that topic that are already on this board. As far as that goes, I've never seen any fabric with "WALMART" printed on the selvage. |

It's back in mine!!! YEAH Limited supply at the moment, but more is coming in each day. My husband found me there "touching" the differnt bolts :) Now I won't have to drive 35-40 minutes every time I need something.
I so agree, I live in a very large town, and had to drive to the other end to a Joann filled with very unpleasant employees, for all my sewing supplies. Now I can go a mile away for buttons, and thread...and a simple pattern....Life is good again for me and my very very simple life.
I asked management in our local WM and they said Never!! So I have to wait til i can get to Clarksville some 35 miles away to buy fabric. The Clarksvillwe store I visit is WONDERFUL!!! Gorgeous fabric and great prices, so....
