The print fabrics on the cotton wall seem to fade fast when washed and they are the higher priced. I seldom buy any of them. I like the flannel prints. They don't shrink that much either.

My thoughts exactly!      |
The new fabric at my local Walmart that they just got in is very nice fabric. I wish I could afford LQS fabric but I am a quilter who lives on a budget and with the rise in cost I can only afford going to the fabric outlets and Walmart. I am glad for those who can afford to buy LQS fabric for all there quilting fabric as I like to see the LQS's thrive.

The Walmat in Clanton, Alabama has been getting in alot of new fabric, by the bolt. Beautiful batiks, colors and patterns, these are priced from $2.47 to $5.00 pr yard. I have emailed this Walmart and have been told that we will be getting a celebration of life section. So according to staff when the fabric is gone its over. So sad.

Feel the fabric. If it feels good (that's the "hand"), buy it if the color, print, etc., are something you think you can use. One of my quilts that won Judge's choice at a quilt show is made entirely of WalMart fabric. Look for Cranston, VIP and AENathan. That is all nice fabric and when you get into a quilt it won't matter what store from whence it came.

Like Patrice said.".it's a hoot, really. the David's selling now at WalMart ($2.97 per yard at mine) is also selling at both of the big chain stores ($7.99 per yard). i've also seen it in quilt shops (in person and online) for $8.99 and $9.99 per yard." |
I was at Walmart in Newport, AR yesterday and they still have quite a bit of fabric. I bought several 1 yd. ea pieces and the lady who did the cutting was sooooo nice. We had a very nice chat and as I was wondered around while she was cutting - found a set of squares that I couldn't live without. I pray they NEVER get rid of fabric. Come to think of it - I don't think I've ever encountered a rude Walmart associate. Yea Walmart.

I've seen the same material in Walmart as in Joann's Fabric store. Of course, it's more expensive at Joann's but it's still the same fabric.
|
I used a lot of walmart fabric for the Christmas tree skirts I made as gifts. I fell in love with a few of those fabrics! the best advice I've ever heard was buy the best that YOU can afford. I follow this advice and don't feel guilty. I would love to only buy at the lqs but not on my budget.
|
Before my Walmart stores closed fabrics, I bought a nice stash. You just have to pick and chose and sometimes the better fabric goes on sale if it is not moving well---just watch. If you notice some of the bolts will even say quilting calico on ends, be nice fabric and still only be 1.50 or 2.00 a yard.
|
I have always bought fabric everywhere. I think you have to watch for quality anywhere you buy, & I have found some great fabrics at Walmarts in the past. I hope they all get their fabric depts back, we need them too, just like the LQSs, don't we!
|
i buy all my fabric from walmart can't afford to buy fabric anywhere else , i hope our fabric dept in waynesboro ga dosn't go out
|
Oh, you better believe that I buy fabric at Walmart! I am choosy, but I'm choosy in the LQS, too.
I have had good luck with the fabrics I bought, too. Now I'm noticing an upward trend in pricing, though. I've purchased the $1.50 yard fabric, too, as long as I know it's 100% cotton. It works fine for what I want to do with it. I am stocked up with Christmas fabric, too, because last year I happened to walk into the store on the day they marked it down to ---- 68 cents a yard. I missed it this year - all the Christmas fabric is gone, and I didn't even get one yard of it! |

I went to Joann's the other day and couldn't find a single piece I thought would work for my baby quilt. I wanted brown and turquoise. Went to WalMart Sunday and found the cutest turquoise with brown polka dots and brown with turquoise polka dots. Just what I wanted. It is VIP fabric and feels pretty good. Sure hope they don't close the fabric dept. there.

Hi from Georgia, I would love to have a fabric department in our town. There is none of any kind. It would be great if you would list your town in GA if your Walmart still has a fabric department. If it was a reasonable distance I would be spending the money I have squirred away. Thanks
|
Our local Walmart closed their fabric department a couple of years ago. But just this week they have signs up that they are bringing back the fabric after their remodel. Estimated return of fabric department in 4-8-11.
|
I was told by my WM that they remodel and then only bring in fabric in 2yd pieces like packaged items so they don't have to cut anymore.

I buy my fabrics almost solely from Wal-Mart and so much so that the fabric ladies already know me. I'm sure they're thinking...."here comes that lady who buys tons of our fabrics." I noticed last week that there were a lot of other new fabrics they were just going to put out...lots of coordinated fabrics for quilting!!! And what an array of batiks that were selling for $3.50 a yard, too. They might be getting the message that the quilters are doing a lot of fabric purchasing from them.
|
I work for WalMart & have been incharge of the fabric dept. for atleast a decade & yes the stores are getting rid of the fabric in a few years. WalMart gets their fabric from the same mills as do quilt stores & Joanns. It is mid grade fabric for the most part & I have not seen some of the newest quilt lines anywhere. The print & color lines this spring are great. If your lucky, you can pick up a copy of the quilt of the month instructions, they go pretty quick.
|
I would say check the feel. You can tell if a fabric is pretty good quality that way. Then stock up on what is best. Those prices won't last long

The Wal Mart in Illinois where I live part time remodeled and did away with their fabric. They put in a Wedding something or other. How strange is that. I loved their fabric. So disappointed that they are eliminating more and more fabric sections throughout the nation. I did post my feelings about it for what it was worth.

I by Walmart Fabric when ever I can.
|
Our local Walmart was going to close the fabric center, too. A lot of us got together and bombarded them at the main office with phone calls complaining about this. When they remodeled the store, they moved the fabric center and downsized it about 1/3, but it's still there! Make a stink! Call the main office -- complain -- make your voice heard. It will get results.

Walmart stuff is always looked down upon, but not in my eyes.
Thank goodness I haven't heard that my local Walmart is discontinuing fabric! I buy there quite often. Just check that it's 100% cotton and do the "feel factor". Also, I always pre-wash. I also buy 90% of my groceries there and save a ton of money. Good buys in many isles. |
I was in WalMart on Sat. They were marking prices up! I asked the lady if I could stock up before she finished, and she was kind enough to let me do so! With the prices of fabric soaring, I thought I had better stock up while I could, thankfully I had just got paid, lol.

Just remember you get what you pay for.

Also now that alot of my fabric comes from LQS,I can NOT always afford to make a queen size quilt,so I make more baby quilts and throws.
|
I purchase fabric at our WalMart but I do the feel test also and look through.
I have purchased cotton/poly that was nice too. It doesn't shrink as bad as 100% cotton.Since there are no Quilt Police I do it my way LOL |
I shop for alot of my fabric at Walmart. Yes, I agree with everyone else that you can get the same exact fabric for a higher price and it is not of the same quality at the LQS. I have noticed that the lesser priced fabrics do not hold up and will shred. That is why I will buy the higher priced fabric from Walmart, and still come out ahead of the game.
I'll have to buy more totes for fabric now! :D |
