The Wall Mart in Houghton Lake still has a good supply and said they will still have it after reset.

I went to Walmart this morn. looking for Valentine print to cut &stuff or whatever I would find for my grandaughters. Didnt have any but I found some really nice heavy flannel for .84 a yard !! she said it was Christmas flannel, but there wasnt anything about it that looked Christmas purple and greens, very pretty. there was 4 yards left!!! oh boy!! 100% cotton. I wont touch the unknown content either. you can find some nice fabric. But I do get irriatated with them for bringing in all that cheapo stuff.if they would care about their fabric dept. they would prob. bring in a lot of cash!!
|
when the good cotton goes higher, that material at Walmart may start looking better and better. I never had any complaints.
|
I've never had a real problem with WalMart fabric. Thankfully mine is one of the ones that still have fabric. I don't buy all they have and I wouldn't have anywhere else. I am with Carol--I get tired of people bashing WalMart. Some of the clothes that used to cost big bucks in designer shops is now carried by them. My sister complains that everything they have is from out of the country. I keep telling her to go to Belks, Sears, Penney's or any other shop and see if she can find anything made in the USA. I wish Sam Walton was still here--he really believed in shopping USA-made items.

I feel like you just have to look at the weave of the fabric. Some of the cheap stuff they have you can read thru it. Some are pretty nice.
Robin in TX |
I live in Brownwood TX and they are packing new fabric into every available hole at the Wal-Mart here.. They have the precuts 5 yds for$6. Really bad stuff. They have really expanded like crazy the stuff on the bolts. What really gets to me as far as fabric shopping there is they only have about one shopping cart width on each side of the cutting table between the table and the fabric. If someone is at the cutting table you can't get to the fabric. Hopefully since inventory is greatly increasing that will work on the space problem. They are great for backing fabrics.

no kidding. cross my heart. the exact same fabrics. at the same time. guess where i buy mine? our Walmart - despite saying they're shutting down the fabric department next month - has expanded the selection of manufacturers and price points. as always (and as can be the case in high end shops) some are stinkers and some are gems. what fun - no matter where you're shopping - to find the gems for the best prices. :-) |
I have a lot of Wally in my stash. I can say I have never had any problems with it. I sure miss it.

No. Just keep your eye on the quality of it. It should be fine with that in mind.

Thank you for not bashing Wal-Mart. I have worked for them for almost 17 years and I just recently transferred to the fabric department as department manager. I buy a lot of my fabric there, but it is just like any other place, you just have to check out what you buy. I also have bought "quilt shop" material and have been unhappy with it. And as far as unfriendly employees, everyone should work retail at some point in their life. The other day I was working and I was asking one of my associates a question about work and a customer came up to me and said excuse me and asked me if we had any other types of this particular fabric and I said I don't believe we do. She walked away, turned around and came back to the table and threw her bolt of fabric at me and said she did not like my attitude and wanted to speak to my manager. I am the type of employee that I will bend over backwards for my customers and it really hurt me that she would even say that. She talked to them and came back and apologized to me saying she had just come out of KMart and had a bad experience.
Sorry to be so windy, but when you have dealt with an unhappy sales clerk, stop and think that possibly they have had a bad day. Still no excuse to be mean to people and I try very hard not to let the previous events bother me, but it does sometimes. |
It takes all kinds to make the world go round.
When someone is rude to me for no reason, I try not to take it personally. As you discovered you don't always know what kind of a day that person has had. I love the majority of the people who work at Walmart. I always smile and have my favorites I joke with. I try to go out of my way to make someone smile if at all possible. I miss the fabric department our Walmart used to have. It's gone about 8 months now. |
I agree, that there is good and bad fabric at WalMart. And the very worst (and expensive) fabric that I've bought has come pricier sources!
|
After Christmas I bought 35 yards of Christmas fabric at WM for $35.00 including the tax. It was a great stash builder.
|
I have a decent amount of fabric from WM and a couple weeks ago I was in Fabric Depot and saw the exact same fabrics for twice the price (on sale)! I got so much more bang for my buck at WM. You do have to be careful though as some of the fabrics aren't as good quality as others.
|
Ditto to one and all  walmart has been my choice for a very long time. the $1.50 thin material if washed then used makes good frayed quilts.
|
I buy a lot of fabric at Walmart. Have had a few (very few) that I wasn't all that happy with but I think I didn't stick to my own instincts when I bought it. I buy what I can afford, what I like or what I need to fill out a quilt fabric selection. Sometimes that last fabric to complete the look I'm after is an expensive LQS fabric. I quilt for family and friends only so after price the look of the finished item is my goal.

Yesterday I went to our local WalMart and as always checked the Fabric Dept. S. the very nice and knowledgeable dept. clerk told me about some just arrived Thomas Kinkade material. Bought some and it is washed and in the dryer. To my pleasant surprise it says David's on the selvedge. Didn't know of that brand, didn't look for it. I am soo pleased about what I have learned in this forum. Thanks, ladies (and men)

Me too.

I use it all the time...just check out the thickness and content...i actually have some good 100% cotton from there !!
|
I would check out the material and definately stock up. Cotton has gone up 80 % in the last year so our fabric is going up. I was hoping W/M was going to keep the material in the stores that had it and maybe going to bring it back to the stores like my 2 that lost it.

I've bought good stuff and bad stuff at Walmart, JoAnnes, and the LQS. Bottom line: Buyer beware, check it out for content, straight grain, thickness, thread count, regardless of where you buy it.

hi the walmart store that has fabric is located in waynesboro ,GA.

We lost our fabric department on Dec. 31 and I am gonna dearly miss it. It was the only place to buy fabric in our town, the others are 20-30 min. away. I am just hoping they don't close those any time soon.

Walmart bashing seems to be a national pastime. I agree with the quote below. Use your own judgment about the feel and quality of the fabric.

Fabric Alert!! Was driving through a pretty town in MI - Tawas when I spotted a Ben Franklin store. Remembered blog about how they carried fabric. Thought I would stop in. What a wonderful suprise! They had so much beautiful quilting fabric at wonderful prices. Bought quite bit for $3.79 a yard. They have alot off of the bolt that is beautiful. The clerk told me that alot of people thought that since it was off of the cardboard it was seconds, but it wasn't. The clerks were great and signed me up for their buyers card - buy 50 yards and get $10 toward fabric. A few more stops and I'll cash in on my 50 yards!
