I think we should start a topic on what Walmarts still have fabric. There aren't many around here in Ohio.
Judy

MollieSue 07-19-2009 04:11 AM

I still have the three around me. One about 5 minutes away, and two about 20 minutes away, different directions. None show any signs of closing their fabric depts.
~ yet anyways.
:-)

patricej 07-19-2009 04:46 AM

there are close to 50 topics here that discuss walmart fabric departments. do you mean we should try making a list of those that still have them?

Hinesville, GA (i'd give the selection 3 stars out of 5; the staff get 5 stars)
Jesup, GA (selection 3.5 stars; have only been once so can't rate the staff)

There are 4 Walmarts in Hawaii (Oahu) and as far as I've been told ALL of them still have their fabric.

The Leavenworth Kansas store just competed building a new store and much to the delight of the manager there is NO fabric. He seemed quite pleased passing on that news to anyone who asked. I will admit, the close out sales were good but so sad in a way. Local cities that have fabric depts. Atchenson Kansas, the Bonner Springs, Kansas store, the far North store in St. Joseph, Missouri ( there are 2 super stores 4 miles apart ). There are several Walmarts in Kansas City that do have fabric but these are the ones closest to me. You can pull up the Walmart home page and list of all stores, then call before going to see if there is fabric or not. Saves time and gas but please, be nice to the person on the phone....they aren't happy that the fabric is gone either!!

As much as we complained over the past several years, I was hoping that corperate would change their minds but from what I've been told, all fabric depts will be gone by the end of the year or early into 2010. Period end of discussion...........

Here in Evansville, Indiana, there are 2 WalMarts. The one closest to my house still has fabric but the other does not.

kwhite 07-19-2009 05:51 AM

I have three Walmart's and went to all. I was told that we would not be losing fabric in any of our Walmart's because of the Amish community and how difficult it is for them to get to some of the dozen other fabric places in the area.

Burnham, Pa yes
State College, Pa by the mall yes
State College , Pa by Wegmans yes

Rose Marie 07-19-2009 06:09 AM

Phx AZ is very big but all the Walmarts I have been to still have fabric.
I talk to the clerks and they all say it will be fazed out sometime in the future. Some are shrinking the fabric dept by adding more craft items.

Huntsville, AL - ALL of the Walmarts still have fabric to one extent or another.
Two have really really nice $1.50 tables - the one on Drake and the one on N. Mem Pkwy
But so far they all still have fabric. I'm sure a few of them (like University) it won't be long before it's gone. Their departments are just sad.

MaineGirl76 07-19-2009 07:02 AM

The Wal-mart near me in Waterville, Maine still has their fabric and they are redoing their craft section to make it bigger and better! The one about 20 miles from me in Augusta is doing the same thing! Thank goodness! Thats where I get most of my fabric besides Joanns.

littlehud 07-19-2009 08:32 AM

Ours in Council Bluffs does not have fabric.

BellaBoo 07-19-2009 08:55 AM

The WalMart here, the only place where fabric was available for 30+ miles, got rid of all bolts of fabric. Now it has a pitiful selection of fat quarters and a few jelly rolls. No name brand. No thread either. The store was bombarded with protests about the fabric dept. going away, this is a semi rural area with lots of people that sew their clothes. The fabric clerks were told the fabric dept. will stay because there was no other fabric store close by. One day I went and all the fabric was marked down 50%, after two days the fabric left was packed on a truck and hauled off.

Lisanne 07-19-2009 01:20 PM

kwhite, I am so glad you posted. The Walmarts by me and in Eastern PA no longer have the fabric, even one that's in a major Amish area. (They don't buy all those little flower patterns, alas.) Maybe I'll make a pilgrimage up to State College to see what they have. (I'll call first to make sure I don't get there the day after they ship them out. :? )

My Walmart here in Columbus with a Hilliard zip code still has fabric and the lady says she still is ordering more. Yahoo!

judy_68 07-19-2009 01:31 PM

I will have to find the walmart in Columbus. I go to columbus from time to time.

Darlene 07-19-2009 01:33 PM

Our Walmart is near the intersection of Hilliard Rome Rd. and interstate 70 going north. There is a Meijer across the street.

judy_68 07-19-2009 01:36 PM

Well, I am very bad at directions but I will have my husband map it out for me the next time Im going to Columbusy.

I think that when they redo the walmarts the get rid of the fabric. I think its horrible. I mean, if they don't want to cut it we can cut it ourselves.

I have an older version walmart Bloomingdale, IL has fabric. There is a super Walmart that does have fabric and I think it is in Bolingbrook, IL. I've only been there once and that was when hubby and I were leaving town.
Hubby just told me it was south of Plainfield so it wasn't Bolingbrook.
Oh yeah, Gulf Shores, Al Supercenter DOES have fabric.

sewnsewer2 07-19-2009 05:46 PM

The one closest to me does and they are getting new fabrics too! They took the hint when people complained and they will be staying! The manager of that dept told me.

stitchinMamaw 07-19-2009 06:34 PM

Staunton , Va , no fabric . Waynesboro , Va has fabric . Annie

janedennis 07-19-2009 07:03 PM

Deland Florida, has one of the best fabric department and the head of it told me last week she order over 2000 bolts a month so keep on buying. LOL.

Another central florida walmart is Western Ocala has fabric too. It is 35 miles away for me but worth it.

tuesy 07-19-2009 09:12 PM

We have fabric here at our W/M.. of course we're the only one within 50 miles or so of the city to have fabric. The W/M in Jerome doesn't have fabric I know. I'm not sure if Boise has fabric at their W/M.

Bevanger 07-20-2009 05:52 AM

Port Angeles WA still has fabric

Dodie 07-20-2009 11:16 AM

I noticed the fabric department here getting smaller and I ask and I was told because of stores being 24 hour stores that within 2 years there was not going to be fabric in any WalMart because it was the only department
that they had to keep a person in around the clock and their plans are to put in a party store section in some towns that is the only fabric store but that is what I was told

Aunt Doggie 07-20-2009 11:32 AM

Illinois Walmarts seem to be getting rid of material left and right.

Does anyone in Northern IL know of one that still carries?

I am near WI state line...

Crafty1 07-20-2009 11:48 AM

There's a Walmart in Durham, NC that still has fabric. Was there today and the clerk said he heard Feb. is when it's closing the fabric dept. No more special orders. Also, I believe the prices have gone up on the $2.44/yard items or there aren't any more. There's a lot of $3.44, $4.44 and now $5.44. Has anyone seen this anywhere else?

joannl 07-20-2009 01:56 PM

Boardman, Ohio = yes
Austintown, Ohio = no
Cranberry Twp, PA = no
I found fabric at one Walmart in Toledo.

I just posted a topic in general chit-chat about Wal-Mart fabric (I guess it should have been here)

I needed to make a baby quilt in a hurry this weekend and the only place open that had fabric was Wal-Mart. (I am not a Wal-Mart shopper for anything - I hate Wal-Mart! - Sorry if I offend anyone, it's just a personal thing) Well, the fabric was such garbage. The 100% cotton was thin and the color was uneven. The flannel was very thin, see-through and the fibers shredded. It was horrible to use. I couldn't even give the quilt to the person I was making it for because it looked so bad. I ended up donating it to the local women's shelter. I couldn't get good help either. Which didn't really surprise me.

mochasue 07-20-2009 02:16 PM

I meant to say that I guess that is what I get for paying $2.97/yard

Do you find that the fabric is not very good quality at your Wal-Mart stores?

Maribeth 07-20-2009 02:18 PM

Most of the Walmart stores in the northern Virginia area seem to have fabric in stock and none appear to be closing. We also have fabric at
Ben Franklin, Joann's, Hancocks, and about 15-20 LQSs. Fabric is all over NOVA.

I know you guys are all back east mostly but i'm in Central Oregon, Sisters actually. We don't even have a chain grocery store here but 22 miles away in Redmond is a super WalMart w/a huge fabric dept. They still have $2.44 fab. and you do have to be careful about how it was dyed but i've gotten some great backing for my quilts there. They have a huge notions dept. but only two brands of thread? :? Great ladies working the dept. too, just requires patience since they have other responsiblities as well.

This is one of our Coffee Break Kits. It's made w/mostly WM fabric except the pink/white that i embroidered on.

Wal-mart in Owensboro, KY is closing fabric dept 1st of August, Central City, KY Wal-mart expects fabric dept to be gone by January 2010, Madison, IN Wal-mart said she had not heard anything about their Wal-mart closing fabric dept. I was told one of the Bowling Green, KY stores still has fabric but I haven't been there to check it out in a few months. Maybe I need to take a little drive.

For the most part, all the fabric I have purchased from Wal-mart has been good quality. I don't buy the $1 a yard, but I have purchased the $2 a yard fabric and most of it was good quality. You just have to feel it and rub it a little to see what it is like. ISN'T THAT THE BEST PART OF QUILTING FEELING THE FABRIIC? LOL!

I am in Crescent City, Ca. we have one walmart, it has fabric left, they say they will keep it but you never know, souposed to become a super store soon & they have made a lot of changes so we will see.

EagarBeez 07-23-2009 06:50 AM

I made another post on this subject. There is fabric in our one and only Walmart within a 100 mile range and they have fabric and keep getting in new fabric on a daily basis. I was told that when they attempted to close the fabric portion, that they as well as the main office were bombarded with calls, they had protestors out, and the schools begged to keep the fabric dept, in order that they could continue their home economics classes. Seems they got all their products and students their fabrics there. There is also no fabric and only 1 quilting store nearby to compete.
The Walmart is in Show Low, AZ

rosalia856 07-23-2009 07:12 AM

I agree. We need the WalMarts to carry a bigger selection of materials and notions.
