I bought a jelly roll and the pieces were not cut out exactly like I would have cut them.

Hi all,
I joined a jelly roll race and used up the remains of another quilt. Just cut your own strips, stitch end to end an the diagonal and go for it. The quilt turned out great and I too, appliqued on top of it. Wherever the color was most predominent was where the butterflies were placed.
Will post once it is quilted.

The jelly roll I used had some duplicates in it and I thought my top came out just fine. It's really up to you. Some of of the same strips ended up on top of each other but always off-set and not stacked directly above each other, so you still get a scrappy look. It's a fun quilt to make! The first one I ironed as I sewed, the second I waited until the top was all sewed to iron. My preference is to iron as you go! Took too long to iron the whole top at once! But that's just me! Have fun!

I love the jelly roll quilts with the applique!!! I will have to remember that. I have done Yellow Brick Road as a background for applique before, but this would help use up the BINS of 2-1/2" strips that I have cut.

I cut my own 2-1/2" strips. My reasons are....I already have lots of fabric, use what I have.
Precut jelly roll strips are quite expensive. Jelly roll strips are not always accurately cut. Jelly roll strips can get too "matchy-matchy"...I like more of a variety of fabrics in my quilts.

Your strips could be any width. Just remember when you do the last cut that your blocks need to be a square. Eleanor Burns uses 2 1/2" wide strips. It looks like it would be hard, just do a practice one and you will see how easy it is.

a jelly roll is 42 strips of 2 1/2 inch fabric, you can use lots of colors or not!
