Watching Movies
Several of you on this board mentioned having t.v.s in your quilting rooms. How are you able to concentrate on both your quilting and a movie at the same time? I think I wouldn't be able to do either well at the same time. I need to watch my needle or my not so straight seems would be even wonkier. lol
I mostly listen. The shows I watch are regular series and I know the characters voices.
Same here. Can tell the voices of those housewives anywhere! :)
I listen to PGA golf.....and my football games, some recorded Fons and Porter shows, if something catches my attention, I stop and rewind....I have it on mostly for company in the house as I live alone.
listen more than watch, stop sewing at a good part, then just carry on.
I use my iPad to watch shows and I watch, sew, watch, it's rarely something I haven't seen before. I still prefer music playing instead.
I'm a listener, too. I listen to Eleanor Burns videos from her website pretty often. I also do Netflix. It's just noise to keep me company.
i have the tv more for the company than to actually watch.
I don't have a tv in my sewing room yet, but I would really enjoy to listen while sewing...

Two nights in a row of total, out of control, bat-sh## crazy behavior. I thought nothing could surprise me anymore, but, man, my jaw was on the floor from the audacity of it all. |
Nothing to watch on TV nowadays. I prefer to put some music on my computer...usually
some smooth jazz or 70's or 80's depending on my mood and what I'm doing. |
I keep mine on mainly for the noise too... Then stop and listen if something that requires my attention. Also, the noise of the tv helps mask the noise my neighbor makes working outside (mowing, splitting wood, etc). The neighbor's noise makes my dogs go nuts. They think: "Intruder Alert! Gotta bark -- LOUD and LOTS! Since several of them will go straight to the fence and bark at him incessantly, I have to bring them all inside when he is working.
I pretty much don't watch movies and I don't watch daytime tv. The tv in my sewing room is situated so you have to turn around if you're at the sewing machine to see it. It's right next to the computer though so I can watch tv while I'm doing stuff on the computer.
When I do watch a movie it's generally in the family room on the giant tv instead of on my little tv. |

I mostly listen as I sew. I also keep working during all those commercials. Though my TV is in my living/great room I have my sewing cabinet in the studio facing the TV.
I have trouble having my back to a doorway when sewing. Probably due to the type of patients I dealt with. ali |
I sew slowly, but it's more fun to have a movie on at the same time. If I concentrate to much on the quilt I will make a mistake - my subconscious is more accurate! LOL
Listening here, too.
Jeopardy! Since I TiVo new programs, Jeopardy is perfect: I can re-listen to an episode several times in a row to "hear" the questions I missed during deep concentration paid to my quiltmaking. Judge Judy. The incredible stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. Any Law & Order with Jerry Orbach. I've seen every episode so many times, I know exactly what's happening. Don't need to TiVo these: there's almost always an episode playing somewhere. NCIS. The older episodes are in the same category as Law & Order. :) |
I mostly just listen too--need the background noise. If the TV's not on I listen to audiobooks.
I just use my tv for noise. Actually, I rarely ever just watch tv...even with DH in the family room I am always playing on my laptop or reading. I very rarely just simply watch tv.
I have the TV on most of the time when I'm in my sewing room. I had 4 children many years ago and learned to tune them out. Proof reading this, I still have 4 children--they just don't live with me anymore. lol I have always done 2-3 things at the same time. If I just watch TV, I usually fall asleep.

I have the TV on, tuned to music only channels. Have over 40 different ones to chose from. 1812 Overature is great for loops and swirls on the quilting frame:D
Maybe it is the sound more than the pictures, but most movies can be watched with half an eye and half an ear. Sewing during sports is even better because of the replays when anything exciting happens.

I have Netflix on mostly and can rewind if I think I have missed something important. I listen for the most part.
I don't have a tv in my studio but I use my Ipad and listen to great uplifting shows.
Hey, Deborah how'd ya like the Ryder Cup this year?? 3 days of so much fun. I actually got so into it that I didn't sew for the whole weekend. Yes, golf is the way - I can sew and just raise my head when one of my favs is up.
PS: I have a soft spot for the Europeans. Sorry!

I too, use the TV for noise/company. If you have a computer you can always watch the OregonQuilting programs on youtube or on the web site www.oregonquilting.weebly.com We have just started taping our new series and I was really nervous on our first programs but think I am getting better.
Old Star Trek series on Netflix... I know them all by heart, so I don't really have to pay attention. It's like comfort food, or petting the cat. It just takes my mind off world issues so I can relax while I "work" with my fabric.
I am a listener as well... and if it gets to something good .. I stop and look up. I will say Dancing with the Stars is tough .. I find I have to use that time as a ironing only , even then not much production happens.
I am an AudioBook addict. Can't stand the Telly: we have one very small one in a small room (the TV room). No-one really watches it except for the news. Kids never watch it. Hubby irons in front of it.
Audiobooks are the thing for me. I go through loads. Thank goodness for Audible! Of course, anything can be a distraction... |
I watch old moves or old TV shows that I've seen before. If I find myself getting too wrapped up in what I'm watching, I'll save it for later and find something else to watch. I also listen to talk radio.
Yes, I do. It helps keep things interesting. Mostly I listen, stopping occasionally to watch a scene. Call it multitasking.
Well, I am a former elementary/junior high school teacher and I became an expert at multi-tasking with anywhere from 25-35 students in a classroom and knowing exactly what was going on and keep on a teaching. So, I have to have the television on because it is soooooo quiet in my sewing room with both my little Featherweight or the 301 not making any distracting noises at all. The TV just keeps me company!!!
Reruns! Love those NCIS marathons. If a program is on that I have not seen, I do get distracted but then you should hear the machine humming while the commercials are on. DH says that I am the only person who looks forward to the commercials. lol
I sew and listen to the radio we don't have cable so no tv put we do watch DVDs and I read and watch at the same time which drives my husband nuts.
I have always watched TV while sewing. The only thing that distracts me when I am sewing is idle chatter, especially if I am expected to participate.

I am a listener too. I usually listen to reruns. That way I don't get too entranced by what is happening on the screen. But I am one of those people that need the noise around me. And my puppy under my ironing board! :o
