Are you going to the Red and White quilt exhibit this weekend? 600+ quilts, I think it's at the Armory, sponsored by the Folk Art Museum.

jdeery 03-25-2011 08:30 AM

And we are one in 21 million

That means we have a voice.

I sure wish I could get my husband to be fasinated by longarms. Can you imagine how that would increase my budget? I could have a Lamborghini powered quilting rig, lol.

Oh, Foxflower, you think just like me! I ran for the calculator right away. Unfortunately I came up with a different # ($76) so we still haven't settled anything.

Anybody else want to help figure this out?

Foxflower is right.

Saw your other post after I posted this. Is there a way to delete a post that you make?

Foxflower 03-25-2011 08:37 AM

I just don't know how it could only be $171/quilter each year. I just finished a king-size quilt top--a budget one. The whole quilt top only cost me about $55. But, then there's the batting, on sale, about another $25. The backing and binding were give to me, so $0. But, here's the clincher, the professional quilting along will cost a minimum of $163.50. So my total on one quilt alone this year....$243.50 minimum. I think we are spending way more than 3.6 billion year. Kind of scary, if you think about it very hard. We could make a dent in the national debt -- but I'm not giving any more money to the government than I have to!

NanaInVirginia 03-25-2011 08:42 AM

I guess that there is no minimum requirement for the amount of quilting you do to be a quilter. There must be some people out there that quilt once in a blue moon. I don't quilt as much as most, but that doesn't keep me from shopping :) I love batiks, so it not uncommon for me to spend $140 on a throw and that doesn't calculate in anything for machines. I mean throw a couple of Berninas and a Gammill or two in the mix and 3.6 billion sounds like a laughable amount, doesn't it?

I think I may have figured it out...the people who took the survey had to misrepresent the real amount they spent so DH wouldn't find out just what they spent. lol

Wonder if the execs at WalMart read this article? That 3.6 billion is only what we quilters spent on fabric.

vlok 03-25-2011 09:51 AM

Hi every one, the newbie here. I heard just recently that quilters spend more on their hobby than all the wooodworkers, golfers, hunters together spend on their stuff.
Quilter's are the largest spending group out there.
Proud to be one.

MrsM 03-25-2011 09:52 AM

I try to do my share!

Scakes 03-25-2011 09:58 AM

Isn't it nice to be part of such an elite group? LOL.

Victoria L 03-25-2011 10:45 AM

Woo hooo....but, why doesn't Wal-mart sell fabric?

21 Million quilters who spend 3.6 Billion (& in reality much more than that $$ amt) ... and YET, there are NO Quilting shows on HGTV or any other cable channels (that I get) and only a few often re-run shows on PBS ... What's wrong with THAT picture ??

Wendy54 03-25-2011 11:18 AM

I knew they would find me out sooner or latter

cooper 03-25-2011 11:36 AM

HEAR US ROAR !

we apparently should be heard dont ya think

cooper 03-25-2011 11:38 AM

there is a LOT wrong with that picture

why doesnt someone complain to DIY or HGTV, they use to have them on, how many people have to stand up and be counted? I am so tired of watching critics on bathrooms and kitchens and yard work done. I usually use HGTV for a background in the daytime, but even their reruns are boring.

they give a show to someone for a year after they win a contest, big deal, I want to have quilting/sewing shows back on

patticriss 03-25-2011 11:39 AM

We should all band together and collectively bargain for better prices!! Then we'd be able to buy even more!!

cooper 03-25-2011 11:40 AM

Patti
you arent kidding, but it wont happen
i went to a new to me website and they want 12.00 USA dollars per yard now.

Mizgoodie 03-25-2011 11:59 AM

Hey, at least we are contributing something important!

OKLAHOMA PEACH 03-25-2011 12:05 PM

A little off of what I had spent this year, but probably averages out. 21 million, that is wonderful, the art if not dead.

TexasGurl 03-25-2011 12:05 PM

I'm pretty sure this survey didn't account for what we all spend on our travels to shops, shows and retreats, on meals, hotels, gas or group bus trip tickets etc ... not to mention the sales of merchandise between individuals, plus online and via forums such as this one ... I'm sure there is a LOT more $$$ spent than even the 3.6 Billion :)

Ruby the Quilter 03-25-2011 12:10 PM

I know I definitely spend more on quilting than golfing and gardening. think I'll start tracking how much I spend (not counting my new Tin Lizzie)

Ruby the Quilter

Ruby the Quilter 03-25-2011 12:14 PM

Let's start bombarding HGTV with request for quilting shows, maybe they will listen to us. Does anyone have a name of someone in the main office for HGTV for us to start sending letters and emails?

You are correct. I want to know who isn't pulling their weight because I sure spend more than that a year. lol

Me tooo-waaaay more in a year than that.....

ramonasct 03-25-2011 01:15 PM

That's what I figured, too. Think we must spend way more than that! Ramona

EdieClay 03-25-2011 01:21 PM

$3.6 billion ... I need to get busy and do my share.

probison 03-25-2011 01:38 PM

I did my part today when I spent over $30 for backing fabric!!

Marvel 03-25-2011 01:57 PM

Who would of ever guessed?

susanwilley 03-25-2011 02:20 PM

Walmart needs to see that and re-think removing all the fabric depts. from thier stores.

grugirl 03-25-2011 02:21 PM

ahhhh.... thanks for that!

SWChick 03-25-2011 02:23 PM

21million that they know of, we all know people (men, liberated professional women, kids, teenages, people in their early twenties) who quilt but don't want anyone to know or think they won't be able to get into shows do to their age. As for amount spent that can't be right we all spend more than that. Maybe we spend that on quilting thread. We should form a union, we could run the world.

Delilah 03-25-2011 02:51 PM

That's right, it works out to $171.43 per quilter. Some of you are NOT pulling your weight because I am paying way more than that every year. Come on y'all, loosen those purse strings!

That doesn't make sense. Wouldn't that be $171 per year? per person? Can't be right.

megs0863 03-25-2011 03:54 PM

Never knew it was that big a number. Wow.

grugirl 03-25-2011 03:55 PM

Holy Moly, I am into it for far too much this year. It has been a huge year for replacing a lot of my stash I sold in Alaska before the move though

bjnicholson 03-25-2011 03:56 PM

I know I'm more than holding up my end, how about you guys?

#1piecemaker 03-25-2011 04:19 PM

SHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

asmmauer 03-25-2011 04:32 PM

I probably spent half that last month LOL we have to keep our favorite stores in business or we won't be able to have any fun.

asmmauer 03-25-2011 04:32 PM

I probably spent half that last month$ 171.00 for a whole year would be impossible for me LOL. We have to keep our favorite stores in business or we won't be able to have any fun.

wytetygeress 03-25-2011 04:41 PM
