Welcome to Virtual Quilting Weekend, Fourth of July Edition!

It's a gorgeous day here in Cincinnati but I'm planning to spend most of it inside quilting. I just finished making a macaroni salad and have assorted meats to grill out at lunch. Then I shouldn't have to cook too much the rest of the weekend. I have several Christmas/craft sale projects all laid out ready to work on. I hope there will be many others taking advantage of the three day weekend who will be able to join in. As always, would love to hear and see what everyone is working on.

peaceandjoy 07-04-2014 04:26 AM

It's supposed to be a perfect (for me!) day here in the Finger Lakes - high of mid-70's, which is wonderful after a week of upper-80's with high humidity.

We have a pretty low-key day planned, and some sewing is definitely on my schedule. I'm going to work on a July small quilt challenge and my Celtic Solstice, which I totally stalled out on!

My church group is making placemats for Christmas to go to people on the Meals on Wheels program. I have made these so far from Robert Kaufman new line called Holiday Flourish 7......

MANIACQUILTER - Those are very pretty placemats! Placemats are on my list of things to make.

RAGGIEMOM - Thanks for starting the Virtual Sew Along. It's fun to be 'accountable' and see what everyone is up to with their quilting projects!

It's a BEAUTIFUL day here and will be spent with friends. BUT...I've already dabbled in something quilting related. I've pressed open a bunch of HST I'm swapping later this month.

Later on, I'll work on longarm quilting a sampler quilt which needs to be returned to my client by next weekend. If I get time later this weekend, I'd like to gather fabrics from my stash for a 'retirement' quilt I need to make by the end of August.

Glad this is a LONG weekend for me! Happy 4th of July to everyone! Be safe!

I'm so excited.. It's supposed to rain a good part of the day, and that means I don't have to leave the house, and I can sew without feeling guilty of missing the sunshine..

retiredteacher09 07-04-2014 05:23 AM

I'm excited to be joining you for the day.

I plan to finish a binding on a UFO. I need to figure out what I did wrong when I used my binding tool to connect up the ends. I usually don't have a problem. Oh, well! At least it's a short seam to undo. The binding is too long and twisted.

I also want to finish a row of braids for a nephew's wedding quilt along with cleaning off one of my cutting areas.

It is a beautiful morning here so I will open up the windows and listen to the birds singing outside while I accomplish these goals.

I'll be here too!! I'm going to be working on my hand stitched 4 patch posie. Its coming right along. Then I might quilt on on the longarm that I need to get done. I'll post my progress as the day moves along!

kristakz 07-04-2014 05:39 AM

Yipee! It's not an official holiday here today, but I booked the day off work just because (my boss is in the US, so I won't be missed :) ). Planning to get some longarm quilting done - one customer quilt I really need to get started on. Hopefully finished, but that's probably optimistic. And I want to spend some time in my sewing room working on *my* projects this weekend. We'll see how that turns out. I did start the day off by finishing my block of the week a whole day early this week :)

hcarpanini 07-04-2014 05:56 AM

Practically neighbors. Hi from Madison, IN.

QuiltingVagabond 07-04-2014 06:11 AM

I will join for a bit this morning! I am working on a fall pumpkin panel kit that I picked up at a show last year. Making HSTs with Thangles for the first time. I haven't decided yet if I like them or not. And I am sewing with my vintage White 77 machine - twin to the one I learned to sew on long, long ago

It's hotter than the 4th of July here in Florida so I'm joining in to stay inside and quilt. Just finished up two for Project Linus and plan to get 3 or 4 done for Wrap-a-Smile (that sends quilts of medical missions). I don't have to trim or bind the PL ones, their group does that, so they went quick. Here's one (the panto is Asian Vines by Anne Bright):

Twisted Quilter 07-04-2014 07:22 AM

I'm hoping to work on a scrappy today. We'll see how it goes.

oldcatlady 07-04-2014 07:24 AM

Will be working on my Quilt for Quilters swap quilt and steaming off wallpaper and painting my kitchen! Glad it's a cool weekend.

Stashelf 07-04-2014 07:27 AM

after we finish with the yard work I'll be getting caught up on my Hoop Sister's mystery quilt I'm only one week behind.

quiltingbuddy 07-04-2014 08:00 AM

Ooh pretty pics! If I could figure out how to post pics I'd show you mine too, but I'm ready to add borders to the "tumbler" quilt so I'll be working on that today. And I will also trim the edges on the English paper piecing runner I've been working on - it's so pretty with fabric that looks like my blue & white china plate collection - then I can get the binding started for it. I'll be excited to finish it...I only started it last year in June LoL. Happy 4th and happy quilting everyone!

donac 07-04-2014 08:14 AM

It is raining here so I may get some cutting done. I am going on a sewing cruise to Alaska next Thursday and I have some cutting to do for that.

Happy 4th, I have a question on the diagonal squares placemat. Wondering what size the squares are and if you strip pieced and then cut Very pretty and a lovely idea to brighten someone's meal. Good job. :)

What a great idea to have the VQ week-end!! I usually get to sew on holiday week ends as the kids go camping (not my cup of tea LOL). I have 4 bindings to cut, make and sew on quilts so I can hand sew in the evenings while watching TV. If that should get finished, I have a BOM to put together. Have a great week-end, everyone!

Love seeing the pics of what everyone is working on this weekend. We're heading out for a bike ride this morning, but when we get home I'm finally going to have time to set up my machine on the rack. Hooray! I've attached the leaders and everything is ready. We have this great little shop here in town called The Legacy. They take crafty donations, mostly sewing and needle work, and sell them to benefit Hospice. I stopped by a couple of days ago and found some unfinished quilt tops that were cheaper than muslin, for me to practice on. I also have a curtain that I'd like to finish this weekend. See you around!

PenniF 07-04-2014 09:16 AM

OOOOHHHH.......LOVE these weekends....Why is it that when Raggiemom calls one i feel totally guilt free about sewing/quilting all weekend. DD had SIL and 4 DGD are away visiting their other grandparents, so nothing planned for company today - just Hubby and me. My special pork spare ribs are already in the oven - no need to worry about them til this evening. I am sandwiching a queen size quilt then hoping to get quilting on it later today.

RAGGIEMOM....what gift projects are you working on please. This is an all-sewn Christmas gifts year for me..... and i am desperate for some new ideas.

Loving the photos already posted.....

I cleaned off one of my cutting areas so now I have room to actually cut without squishing other projects together!

I finished the binding on a quilt that will go to Sadie's Dream for a Cure. I couldn't get my ends to match right on my beginning/ending so I just did a straight seam instead of a diagonal. Then I made sure I bookmarked MSQC's tutorial for the next time. I usually do the pillowcase turn and sometimes I bring the back to the front so I usually struggle with some part of a binding.

The mitered corners didn't go well this time and then I realized that I didn't catch the binding in one spot when I sewed it to the back. So out came the ripper. :(. But I did a good job of machine stitching the front down and keeping it on the binding in the back. :)

Time for lunch and then I will work on my French Braid row.

I hope to join in too. We are not grilling out until Saturday. This gives me time to do my housework today since I am off work. This should not take too long. Then it is off to quilt a baby quilt that was requested. I am also having fun making some mini braid wall hangings.

Quilty-Louise 07-04-2014 09:21 AM

I finally have both machines back home from the "hospital" and fully functional again.

Need to clean off my table so I can get one machine set to embroider and the other to
sew with.

Well, it's break time for me. I'm going to watch The Bold and the Beautiful while I exercise then apparently I'm going to hold the ladder for my husband while he does some caulking around the upstairs window. I have had a productive morning though. I finished 5 grocery sack sleeves, 4 tissue holders, and 3 car caddies. See you a little later!

Island Queen 07-04-2014 09:41 AM

I am joining in the fun. It is cool, windy and cloudy here in north central Minnesota. I am sewing on binding ton3 quilts and making 3 fleece throws for the little girls to use on the boat tonight while we watch fireworks. Just keeping my fingers crossed that the wind dies down by 10 tonight. The fleece is from Frozen. Total surprise for them.

Raggiemom 07-04-2014 10:09 AM

Love those placemats, are you following a pattern or did you design it yourself?

I'm making a variety of things. So far I have the car caddies, tissue holders, and grocery sack sleeves done. I'm going to start bolster pillows soon and some charm pack scarves. I will post a picture of the various things as I work on them and if anyone is interested in the pattern, just ask. Some are from purchased patterns and some are downloaded from internet. I'm more than happy to share.

Where did you find the Frozen fleece? I have a 5 year old niece who LOVES that movie and that would make an excellent present for her.

I will be cutting out batiks for a class on Celtic Illusions for next week. I will be piecing a single backing for a Christmas quilt.

Quilty-Louise 07-04-2014 10:49 AM

Can you explain more about your car caddies, and grocery sack sleeves?

Sounds interesting and I am ALWAYS looking for new small things to make.

QuiltingVagabond 07-04-2014 11:00 AM

Finished sewing and trimming my Thangles, all 208 of them! I still need to press them and tear the papers off but now I am heading to my DDs for a cookout.
Working tomorrow and DGS has a 1st birthday party Sunday, so I may or may not be back for VSW!

Leslie333 07-04-2014 11:11 AM

I'm planning for a quilting weekend! My hubby and DS are out of town visiting the inlaws and I'm "stuck" home since I'm on call for work (I work in IT). So far no calls today!

I'm working on figuring out my new Pfaff Performance 5.0, then doing a small project to make placemats for my mom. Figured that would be a good way to work though use of the machine. So far I've figured out how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine, and change to the single needle plate. I've started on the first placemat and so far so good.

Sandra in Minnesota 07-04-2014 11:11 AM

It looks like it could rain this afternoon. Plan to work on my Jacob's Ladder Remix, and later to a grill party with a few friends. The rest of the weekend can be sew, sew, sew. Everyone enjoy this long holiday!

DD and I are sewing together today. I made lunch and she brought her doggie over so we could spend the day together. DD is making a bow tuck bag with a zipper and I'm working on granny squares quilt blocks. First picture is DD, second picture is her fabric, the pretty colors are the outside and the green is the lining and bottom, the third picture is my granny square blocks.

Yikes- I'm going to cut out strips for my 1st Bargello. Dina, Dina has been helping me get my fabrics in the right order-she was so nice to help me. Soooo- tomorrow I begin. My DH will be golfing, and I will have nothing to bother me except our 3 dogs. My concentration will be at its best (I hope).

This is the pattern for the car caddy, it's really simple to make and doesn't take long.

The grocery sack sleeve is a pattern from Me and My Sister Designs. It's pretty simple to make too. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was still confused about your grocery sack sleeve...lol

So I went to the website and found the pattern.......duh NOW I understand.
I made one of these YEARS ago.

Great idea to make some for the craft fair and bird expo.
