Mine was years go when a friend said "Deb, I know you make everything, but you couldn't have made that"

When my GS won't go to bed unless his quilt Nama made is with him.

QuiltnCowgirl 05-22-2011 04:44 PM

Mine was from my former sister-in-law. Back in 1982 I made her "second dress" to be worn at the reception of her wedding to my brother. Also took apart & resewed 2 bridesmaid's dresses that someone made wrong. This was at a time when I was tight on money, short on time & gas for my car, but made the trips necessary across town to do the fittings, use my mom's machine to do the sewing, etc. Never got a thank you from her.

Until last year that is. I made a baby quilt for my great-nephew and gave it to my nephew's wife at her baby shower. My former sister-in-law was there. When B opened her gift & everyone realized it was a handmade quilt, my sister-in-law started gushing about what a great seamstress I was, how I made all those dresses for her wedding, how I had sewn since I was a young girl, on & on. My jaw was on the floor! I never realized how much she did appreciate what I had done. I guess at 17 (her) & 22 (me) you just don't communicate it the way you can at 45 & 50 LOL!!!

When my husband looks at me and tells me he loves me and I look beautiful even after fishing

Forty seven and a half years ago when my husband asked me to marry him and last evening when he said to me, "You are my Everything." :) :) :)

scowlkat 05-22-2011 05:15 PM

When I was asked to make the wedding dress for a friend who waited until late in life to marry her soul mate. She is also the woman I most admire in the world! I was almost beside myself with joy, fear, trepidation. We had been friends for over 25 years and it seemed to me that she was always listening to my rantings and ravings and watching me make a fool of myself. Finally I had a way to repay her! She was pleased with the end results and amazingly, so was I!

Lindsey 05-22-2011 05:21 PM

when i quilted a quilt and it was all free hand and they told me I couldn't have done it that it was too perfect it had to be a computer.

My Mom always tells me "I really think you're a doctor. You know as much as they do" (I'm a nurse )

Mazda 05-22-2011 05:38 PM

I haven't a clue.

rushdoggie 05-22-2011 05:39 PM

My DH once said to me: "you're my favorite." I asked him, "Favorite what?" and he replied "Favorite Everything." I'm a lucky woman.

quilt-fanatic 05-22-2011 05:43 PM

When my 17 yr old Grandaughter said "Grandma, when you die, can I have all your quilts?". I said maybe not all, but you can have some of them. To me, that was one of the sweetest compliments I could have.

DogHouseMom 05-22-2011 05:44 PM

When a major magazine asked me to write a feature article because they liked my style. I get quite a few compliments on my regular column as well.

Well ... it's a "major" magazine to me anyway. AKC Gazette.

When my teenagers pulled out their new quilts to show off and all their friends wanted one too!

cathylynn 05-22-2011 06:15 PM

when I dropped by unannounced at my Mom's house and she had the placemats I made for her on the table. they were only the 2nd project I ever made - the blocks were ok and the binding was bad, but there they were - out on display for all her friends to see. definitely the best compliment she could have given me.

I get the same reaction from almost everyone I gift a quilt to when they find out that it was made on a treadle and on a machine that is over 100 years old. They are so amazed that they are holding a piece of living history and I have heard them say many times that they can almost feel the love in each stitch.

To me that is the best compliment I could ever get!

When my first quilt show entry won Viewer's Choice. That was the biggest surprise and best compliment I've ever had for my quilting.

mimom 05-22-2011 07:04 PM

my DH's aunt, my mentor, wants me to quilt some tops for her, she can afford to send them to a long armer.

cathyvv 05-22-2011 07:07 PM

Best ever is tough - but my DH always wins the "Best Ever" prize. Best lately - two candidates:

1) Am home schooling my 11.5 year old grandson over the internet. (Not my idea.) One morning I didn't feel well, so I IM'd him to start without me (he will actually do it!), and I'd be on line with him around noon.

When I got up, I checked to see if he was online. He wasn't but he sent me the sweetest note! "Oma, I can't wait until you fell better!" I can't imagine many teachers get compliments like that - I expected more of a "Don't hurry on my account." type of response.

2) Grand-nephews and nieces were out for Easter Week. The night before we had to take them home, I asked them all what was thier favorite part of the week. The younger boy, who is in a bad family situation, immediately said, "Being with you!" And he meant it! You know he'll be asked back!

JanetM 05-22-2011 10:49 PM

When my friend Linda told me that the quilt I made my Mom was the prettiest quilt she had ever seen. She said she collects quilts so she knows a good one when she sees one, and that I should've entered it at the county fair quilt show.

She was being very generous with her compliments ;) ;) ;)

arizonagirl 05-23-2011 01:06 AM

2 Christmas's ago I made both my daughters and their husband blankets, they each had their own. When my oldest daughter found out that they were done she rushed over so that she make sure that she got 1st pick over her older sister. And she tell me you always know just what we would want and the one that she wanted just had to be made for her ( it was).

The other is when my DH sees a good looking woman he tells me she good looking but not as beautiful as my girl. I keep trying to tell him I just the girl next door. But just this sun rises and sets with me.

Debd 05-23-2011 01:27 AM

When my son asked for matching pillowcases for a duvet cover I had pieced together on the fly for him! Made from precut Walmart fabric no less! So not my best fabric or most time spent. Go figure!

Here's a link to the cover. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-103484-1.htm

My daughter made me a birthday card this year that thanked me for teaching her how to love.

Ditto here...this sounds like my mom and a few other people...another thing that makes me feel good is when someone I taught to quilt is telling another person that they couldn't have done it without me...LOL

Lori S 05-23-2011 03:52 AM

I'm not sure its the best .. but will never forget the first time some one refered to me as an "Artist".

The great response to my "4 patch posie" quilt that I posted on the board!

The tears that I seen fall from a friends face when she opened the huge gift bag with her quilt (the purple bargello) in it!

Stitchnripper 05-23-2011 04:02 AM

I have made quilts and some nightgowns for my granddaughter and the Halloween costumes for her and her brothers. So all the grandchildren think Grandma can just "whip it up and it will be great" for anything they can conjure up. And they do think everything is great, regardless.

saraaev 05-23-2011 04:12 AM

When my dd called me from the delivery room just as her third child was "being" born and with a happy squeal (VERY out of character for her ) and said " oh, Mom our Sara Ann is here ! Thank you ! " Could have knocked me over !!! I had no idea. That was 14 yrs ago and my name sake calls me Sara Anne and I call her Sara Ann :-D

Barb_MO 05-23-2011 04:38 AM

When, in the early years of my quilting I entered a Boston Commons quilt in the County Fair and when I went at the end of the week to pick it up it had two blue ribbon and one big purple ribbon on it.
It had won a blue for Best Machine Piecing, a blue for Best Hand Quilting, and Best of Show.

colwoods 05-23-2011 04:42 AM

One Christmas I made a college themed quilt for my son and put t-shirts from his college days on the back. He was so proud of it that he took it with him in the middle of summer to Massachusetts for the christening of his god-daughter. Her father was his college roommate and he wanted to show it off to him. He called me late at night to tell me how much everyone liked it.

Hubby and I have been married for 24 years this June. Yesterday was his birthday and he came up to me and said, " I love you more now than I did when we married, and I want you as much today as I did back then."

When my husband who is still my hero looks at me after almost 50 yrs and says "hey pretty girl".

sueisallaboutquilts 05-23-2011 04:51 AM

These posts are all so touching!! Thanks for starting it!!! :)

clsurz 05-23-2011 05:21 AM

My almost 9 year old granddaughter recently telling me that I "inspire her" and teach her things no one else does, not her parents and not her teachers and that she knows she will do well in life as an adult because of my inspiration.

That melted my heart when she told me that.
