I used to hate doing borders-cutting them and sewing them. I have actually gotten good at squaring and rotary cutting strips now, so they don't bother me. I still hate binding. I have a quilt I should be binding right now. I am finding ways to procrastinate instead. lol

MadQuilter 04-02-2009 11:19 AM

pressing (aka ironing). I never paid much attention to it but BOY can it make a big difference in how pieces fit together.

KGoodhand 04-02-2009 12:48 PM

I agree with the ironing answer! I know it helps everything go together nicely but man what a pain!

BlueChicken 04-02-2009 12:49 PM

Ditto with the ironing, and add pinning to the list.

I've learnt to take the time to pin things, they sit so much better.

Stitching4Fun 04-02-2009 01:25 PM

I don't like sewing the backing together. I guess it is time for me to get the extra wide fabric for the back, huh?

I have sewn all my life. I made my own clothes at 12 and have been sewing ever since. I went from singing bands outfits with all the sequins, to wedding and bridal dresses to drapes to furniture. Been doing it for way too many years.

But that seam down the back of a quilt is the thing I hate the most out of everything.........figures, huh? The simplest thing is the biggest worry.

Yes, get the wide backs. I did one quilt where I had to stitch the back. Hated it so bad, I buy the wide fabrics for backing now.

Loretta: Please, what's the "easier way to make them"? I love flying geese, but mine turn out wonky.

Tippy 04-02-2009 08:01 PM

I used to hate basting, but have grown to understand that sometimes it's necessary.

gcathie 04-02-2009 08:52 PM

flying geese....I do them Eleanor Burns style now way way better....ps make them a little bigger than they say and cut them down.....:-)....ahhhh geese a re good now...:-)

BellaBoo 04-02-2009 10:14 PM

I don't mind at all piecing backing since I started using this method. It's great. http://www.reddawn.net/quilt/backings.htm

Zucchini (sorry, I couldn't resist. )

Marcia 04-03-2009 08:06 AM

applique--I am trying to learn to like it. I love applique quilts, just not my own personal results.

I didn't like hand applique until I discovered fleece--no fusible web and non needle turning--it's awesome. I'm addicted. I applique at lunch, in traffic jams, anywhere I can fit in a few minutes. A minute here and a minute there really add up!!

ghostrider - I agree!

SazuBMidlands 04-03-2009 10:45 AM

I used to hate the fact that working full time meant I couldn't really get involved with any quilting groups who mostly meet in the day. :(

Then I found this site, and now I love the huge variety of stuff going on here, the pictures and chats. :D

Now I just hate not having as much time as I'd like to quilt!

littlehud 04-03-2009 05:34 PM

I hated sandwiching the quilt til I found basting spray. Now it's a no sweat thing.

Ducky 04-03-2009 05:56 PM

Actually, I used to absolutely hate points. Now they're a delightful challenge. I now use the fork pins and I love doing them. I also have to ditto the zucchini........

zennia 04-03-2009 06:00 PM

I use to hate making HST until I figured out to cut the squares bigger in the beginning and trim. Wasted a lot of time and fabric before I wised up.

AkAngel 04-03-2009 07:04 PM

I think the thing I hate the most is all the cutting. No matter how I try I always seem to get off somewhere. The other thing would probably be layering or sandwiching large quilts. I've not yet tried the basting spray but I think I will next time around.

I also hated flying geese - I just got all confused - now I love flying geese - I am doing a civil war sampler and every block has at least 4 flying geese blocks LOL

I am not familiar with the "fleece-no fusible web and non needle turning". Could you tell me what this is all about or direct me to an informational site? Hand applique and I have never been compatible!

littlehud 04-04-2009 01:10 PM

This sounds intriguing to me. Applique is not my favorite thing but this might work. Tell us more.

DebJ 04-05-2009 08:50 PM

I enjoy piecing, like applique', but I still not to crazy about paper-pieceing, it never turns out quite right. I use to hate ironing but it doesn't bother me any more. Even if it is clothes,

Tiffany 04-05-2009 09:15 PM

I used to hate applique. I started doing a fusible applique and tried machine applique. Then I tried hand applique and fell in love! Now it's about 2/3rd of everything I do. I would never have guessed that when I first began quilting.

I discovered when making a baby blanket a while back that fleece doesn't fray like cotton. The reason applique either has to be fused or needle turned is because it frays.

I cut my applique shape out and pin it down and do a teeny tiny blanket stitch around it. I will try to take a picture tonight (shhh! don't tell my boss, I "chat" with you at work!!!) and post tomorrow.

The fleece is just like butter. The needle just slides through the fabric. I haven't tried stitching a fleece applique to a cotton background, but would assume it would be just as easy.
I can do an easy shape in about 15 minutes.

Oh...it would have to be sandwiching/basting...no wait...its marking the top for quilting...no back to sandwiching...oh yeah...and I'm not to fond of zuchini either..

GailG 04-06-2009 06:09 PM

Let me begin by saying what I love the most. I love the cutting process. But I must do it when I'm alone so that I can concentrate and talk to myself. I also love to chain piece. And I love, most of all, the pressing. My blocks never come out to a true size because I steam the heck out of them. I want them flat and crisp. Now -- what I hate the most [well actually I don't really "hate" it, but...] is the sandwiching part. Then the pinning and basting. I've tried the spraying but liked that even less. I would think that the reason I have so many tops waiting for the sandwiching, etc. process is that I procrastinate and then get interested in another project and move on, etc. etc. leaving the WIPs to become UFOs. There I've gotten that off my chest. This thread was a very good idea. Thanks.

k3n 04-07-2009 12:14 AM

For me it USED to be basting - by hand with needle and thread on the floor - my poor old knees and back - I would get up after an hour or so and feel about 101! THEN I got my microtack basting gun - yesterday I pinned and basted a lap quilt AND a bed quilt - laid out and pinned on the floor then basted on the dining table - it was actually fun with my little gun! :D

Since I watched the Sharon Schambers Binding tutorial video, I no longer dread the binding. I only used the starch (not the glue) and it worked so well. I also had perfect miters in the corner for the first time. YEAH!

Loretta, I have a fabulous squash casserole dish - u want me to send it to you?

cinnienune 05-31-2009 06:44 PM

ghostrider, ever tried zuchinni bread? Umm.

quiltnut4ever 05-31-2009 06:50 PM

I used to love cutting the fabric and now I can't stand it literally. Since I stand to cut I stay on my feet for very long and it makes my legs wobbly
:(

Can you kneel on a sturdy bench with a cushy pillow? That would still give you the height leverage and it wouldn't put strain on your feet.

k_jupiter 05-31-2009 08:09 PM

I never hated Zucchini until I discovered yellow crook neck squash. A summer squash with flavor.

Zucs? Make great bread.

k3n 06-01-2009 02:47 AM

I make soup out of 'zucs' - we call them courgettes! Some onion, chicken stock, herbs and a few spuds for thickness, then blend and serve with a swirl of creme fraiche. I freeze it in and we eat it all winter long!

I hate the quilting part. I love piecing, everything about it, but I get so danged frustrated trying to maneuver the quilt through the throat of my machine, no matter how I roll/fold etc. that I've pretty much given up and send mine out. The funny thing is, I practiced FM on the second quilt I ever did, lap size, and though I still don't like it, I think it turned out really well! Let's see if I can attach a pix.

So, k3n, do you machine quilt with those little tacks in place?? I love that little thingy too, but I find them (the litle plastic tacks) a problem on the machine.

Sliced? in foil? I need more details please.

kluedesigns 06-01-2009 06:32 AM

i hate that there are so many beautiful fabrics and project ideas on the market that even if i quilted 8 hours a day 7 days a week i'd never get them all done.

it always saddens me to put a project on the back burner.

I have just finished quilting my first ever machine FMQ - up til now I've hand quilted. It was my pansy kaleidoscope. And yes I did it with the tacks in. I'm about half way through taking the tacks out and so far only a couple have been under a stitch and took a little coaxing to get out! I had no problems with them while quilting. And that goes for hand quilting too. I haven't posted yet because I still have to hand stitch the binding to the back.
