I always sew the 2 cut off ends together. One piece instead of 2. Will use later for strippy quilt. I cut my bindings 2 1/2" & fold. Same width as a jelly roll. I keep separate from other scraps. I do not feel these pieces are scrapas, just small pieces of stash.

Put them in a crazy quilt or add them all together for a varigated binding or use the bits for applique.

Rose Bagwell 02-07-2011 07:06 PM

I save mine for small quilts, doll quilts.

I have heard of people using phone book paper for string piecing. I was always a bit afraid the ink from the phone books would transfer to the fabrics when pressed. Anyone done one of these and was the ink a problem?

O use my left overs for scrap quilts. They are ready to go, just stitch together. Voila!

Grandma Peg 02-07-2011 07:46 PM

Use them on scrappy quilts, think it looks really nice.

wildyard 02-07-2011 08:48 PM

I sew them together for scrappy quilts. They go into my scrap boxes with everything else.

I often make too much binding, so I keep the leftovers and use them to bind smaller projects. Often I will find a nice match in my collection.

My Mom does that too...Scrappy bindings are very attractive!

brushandthimble 02-08-2011 04:23 AM

I usually cut an extra strip, I use them to border my labels I sew onto the back.

Yes, I have used the phone books paper and you tear it off after you are done piecing. I didn't have any trouble with ink transferring. You can also use newspaper but it needs to be several weeks old to give time for the ink to set. I also use copy paper that has misprinted from my computer. I like to let it age a while too.

I would sew them together and make a scrap binding

Got this idea from a friend. She sewed the pieces together to make a long strip and then used it on other quilts. All the different colors around the edge is pretty.

Thank you for the wonderful idea, The phone book one is totally awesome. What a neat idea. The woven Rug, is beautiful, hmmm by a dooe way. ha. maybe kitchen sink. (smile) Thank you both for the idea.

I use an "anchor cloth" or "safety blanket" when I sew. This is a small folded piece of fabric which you sew off of when you start a seam and sew on to when you end a seam. It saves a LOT of thread. And you do not get those annoying "birds nests" on the back of your pieced block. A 2" wide piece of binding cut about 1 1/2" long makes a perfect anchor cloth.

bubbe1659 02-08-2011 02:21 PM

save them all and make a binding quilt...that's what i'm doing

Grace Mitchell 02-08-2011 03:23 PM

I press them out flat and use them to make 4 patches for use in charity quilts.

lclang 02-08-2011 06:15 PM

If you are using two and a half inch strips for binding you could press them and combine them with your jelly roll strips.

roseOfsharon 02-08-2011 06:17 PM

Some interesting ideas as to how or what to use them for!

After reading re: Phone Book quilt, I decided to make a block. Didn't use the binding strips as I make my own binding, but used fabric strips just to try out the method. Finished one block. It turned out a beautiful 8 inch block. Question? are all phone books the same size? Rather than making a quilt, I'm using the suggestion to make Pot Holders. I always sell sets of 2 potholders. I am going to try to pick strips alike so I will have enough for two. Then, a plain colored backing 1.5 inches bigger than the block, turn that extra over for binding. Be sure you miter the corners then sew matching tabs for hanging to each one. I know I'm sorta of rambling, but it is the middle of the night and I just needed to empty my mind so I can go back to sleep.

So far, with this new computer, I havn't learned how to post a pic. Will try again. If you get something weird, just remember the source. ME

Got a picture to come through. Not a bad one either. A purple Iris in my garden of my former home.

We get phone books from two companies and they are slightly different sizes. Take an old blade from your whizzy whacker and cut them to suit. You can cut multiple layers at one time.

pamesue 02-09-2011 05:54 AM

just google phone book quilt....cool idea...I thing I will try

gollytwo 02-09-2011 05:56 AM

They go in my Mile a Minute box after I've ironed them open.

pat brundage 02-09-2011 01:25 PM

I can't stand to throw them away either, I save then in a small basket by my machine and when I do a really scrappy scrap quilt I sew them together.

Exactly! It is an excellent solution <wave>

jdavis 02-16-2011 02:22 PM

I haven't done that many quilts, but I save mine also. And I usually make way more than I need. I have used some to finish the edges on [at least one] x-bag, and the hem of a sweatshirt after I removed the ribbing.

samsews 02-16-2011 03:10 PM

I use my leftover binding strips in log cabin quilts or in they are wide enough, trip around the world,or 9 patch centers.

anniec55 02-16-2011 07:33 PM

save them to piece together for scrappy binding on scrappy quilts, (usually following a solid border).... looks great!!!
