I've started quite a collection of the "tails" that I cut off of the quilts, once I've bound them. I just can't bring myself to throw them away. What do you do with them?
I made a phone book quilt from them. I don't have a photo of it yet because I am still quilting it but you can Google phone book quilt to see how it is done.
Same problem here - I keep saving them and believe I will use them some time in either a very scrappy quilt, or cut them up and make a postage stamp quilt. Who knows. Once in a while someone else needs them. I share my stash on a regular basis with friends.
Could you sew them together, end to end, and use them on pet beds? I use all kinds of odds and ends for my bindings that I do on the kitty quilts for the shelter. Hopefully the kitties are color blind, lol.
You could cut them up and make a scrap quilt with them.
have you seen this ModaBakeShop tute? would work great for binding scraps sewn together...

i save them and sew them together for binding for my scrappy quilts. i do make alot of those, as they are my favortie.
I am saving mine for God's Eye blocks.
I sew them end to end and wrap them around cotton clothesline to make fabric bowls and bags out of the clothesline..... scrappy is very pretty!
At this point the only thing I've done with them is throw them in my scrap box. :)
I make yards of binding and always save the leftovers. I then use them, sometimes several different ones, on charity scrap quilts. They make up really pretty and are always available.
I use them to bind scrap quilts. I put them in a plastic shoe box labeled "binding" until I'm ready for them.
I just started my first string quilt and I have been throwing my binding ends in my scrap box. They do get used.
I keep them and sew them together to make scrappy binding. Quick and easy.
I hang them on a design wall, and hope to use them sometime.
And I have! Or use on a scrappy quilt. |
I sew them end to end to make long binding and then use it on scrappy quilts. Who knows or cares if the binding fabric is in the quilt top? Everything blends.

Yes, I keep all my cuts and use them for various things.
scrappy quilts, journal covers, pockets made out of left over blocks on my recycle bags. Attached is a picture of how I store them, this is one of two jars. binding storage |
Scrappy bindings for scrappy quilts, it makes them more charming.
scrappy bindings, colors that work together with what's on the quilt ~ I just was getting ready to pack up a leftover binding, when I realized it was the perfect length for the runner & matching hotpads I just did for the kitchen... there are a bazillion uses! I fold them and wrap, that way I can see what colors are available in my drawer.
Ditto on the sewing end to end and use as a scrappy binding.
We sure are thrifty aren't we !!

i use them on scrappy quilts or donation quilts
I make strip quilts. I cut pieces of muslin in 1.5" squares and sew the strips diagonally across the muslin. After I trim the edges, the blocks are ready to sew together.
Lay the first piece face up, corner to corner. Lay the next piece right side together with the first piece, sew the edge, flip open and press. Continue until all the muslin is covered. |
I keep a container of them, and use them to bind scrappy quilts, they look great!

Make a scrappy log cabin quilt. I am working on one now, it has a lot of left over binding strips.
I cut them into whatever size squares I can get from them and add them to my scrappy stash boxes.
I'm quite pleased with my use of selvedge strips -- they go into a gardening basket and are used to tie up plants. I figure by the time they rot through the plant shouldn't need support any more, and they certainly add a bit more colour to the garden.

How long are these tails you're all talking about? The trimmings from my bindings are very short (3" maybe) with 45º ends. Sewn together end to end, it'd be so full of seams as to be unuseable as a new binding.
Thanks RkayD- just added ANOTHER one to my favorites-it's so neat and something different. I used the weaving idea on potholders at Christmas, but never thought of doing a rug. Great gift idea!!!!
I save them and sew them together in a long strip. this will make one big piece of material then I will cut out dunkards path from it. I will use some of the strips for half of the dunkards then some plain material for the other half. I saw it on TV. I can't think of the woman's name - big name in quilting. She had some lady on her show that did this. Not with binding strips but just cut strips and sewed them together until she got a big sheet of material.
i am going to sew them together and make a strip quit for charity. I will probably sew them together on the diagoal to give a bit of character. I even save the small triangles that are cut when sewing them together and put two together in a square for the center of a string quilt.
I have used them to bind scrappy quilts, but lately I've just been keeping them in a bag. When I have enough I'm going to make a bunch of log cabin-type blocks. I'll use a foundation and lay a square on it, and then surround it by the pieces of binding.
I have a box full and am going to try the rug with clothes line that is tutored in this board....bought the line at the dollar store..looks like fun
Wow, love that, I have been using quilts for years as rugs, but I like the way that one is pieced together

I seem to have an irrational fear of not having enough binding for a planned quilt so I measure it out a bit too generously. Doesn't help that I don't actually measure it, I run it around the edge of my quilt with ample inches allowed for mitering corners. As a result, I too end up with leftover binding. Sometimes as little as 18" but usually much more. I also have them saved in my scraps in a ziploc baggy marked "bits 'o binding". I will use them in a scrappy quilt as they are already pressed right sides together and ready as binding. I can't be bothered with pressing them flat again to use as strips in piece work, I get enough of those when I am doing regular cutting for patchwork.
someone I know saves all kinds of scraps and either uses them to make stuffing for dog beds for the shelter or cuts them very small and puts them in a basket to hang in a tree for the birds to use in building their nests. Who would have thought??
