I have a new machine (a Brother Nouvelle 1500S!!) and I absolutely LOVE it for straight stitching and quilting (which it glides through all the layers like butter) but I need to re-organize my sewing room, which is very small. I have a high cutting table which saves on my back but currently I'm also sewing on this table....standing up! I wouldn't mind but I can't stand for very long doing this as it throws my left hip out of whack....aaarrrggghhh!

I've been kicking around ideas with my DH but he isn't up for "building" me what I want. I have one long wall that is 7' that I would like to have a sewing table where I would have room for my quilting machine AND my embroidery machine. I'm not sure what options there are. Tell me what suggestions you have and I'm curious as to what you have to sew and/or quilt on.

Have you considered getting two short filing cabinets and a hollow core door (across them) to make a new table? Doors are usually around 6 feet and the cabinets would give you more storage. Just a thought.

I piece with a featherweight on a plastic folding table from Costco, they come in several lengths. There are plastic bed risers sold at BedBathandBeyond and other national stores that will elevate tables to desired heights. The gals at our senior center use them on their tables to tie /pin quilts. I need to get these for cutting, bending over hurts my lower back.

I have a Bernina 630 and a great sewing desk that I bought from my Bernina dealer. It sinks the sewing machine to level for quilting and I can bring it all the way up if I need to change the bobbin or use the free arm. It will also sink all the way down and I have a cover to go over it to turn it into a flat top in case I wanted to do my cutting there or something. I have 4 drawers and a tray(fits a 12x18 cutting board) on the front left and the desk has an extension on the back that folds up and gives me an even larger surface for quilting.

I have a table up on gallon paint cans...not beautiful but works perfectly.

I got my cabinet from a Bernina dealer back in 96 or 97. It is on wheels & has a drop leaf at the back to make it bigger when needed. It makes machine quilting much easier as the machine sits down on a shelf lower than the cabinet top & has a plastic inser to make fill the space around the machine - making 1 big quilting surface. Behind the door on the left is a drawer for notions & shelves for my iron, etc.

I also have a "Big Board" ironing board that goes on top of my ironing board & sits the the right side of my sewing cabinet. The ironing board lets me adjust the hight to the same as my sewing cabinet & I can press seams without getting out of my chair.

I would just order a laminated kitchen counter to fit the space and then get some of those fence posts and you can drill them in to the top with screws and then you can cut out a hole big enough to put in your machines at counter height with either a air lift or just get a small little table the right height something like a TV tray that is large enough to hold your machine. you and hubby could do this project together. it would be fun.

Almost always Janome 6500 on top of a 4'x14' conference table. Very sturdy and alsmost no vibration to speak of.
