For me, scrappy quilting is like what your friends did. Go through the fabrics at hand. Choose what you like best together. Sew. Arrange the blocks in a pleasing manner. Then rearrange tll you love the setting. Sew.
But your way, find some scraps, sew-- that's absolutely fine too. Whatever floats your boat. That's the beauty of quilting. We get to do what we like. |

I really enjoy the way scrappy quilts draw you in for a closer look. After you stand back and admired the overall design, you feel a little tug to look closer at the quilting and another tug to view each one of those little multicolored pieces. |

I am going to try to attach a picture of my scrap crazy quilt (WPI) I started with a box of scraps from a friend who did a lot of craft work and saved the scraps. I mean real scraps. Then I took a lot of my small bits of material and cut out squares from 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 and the left overs are in this quilt. I am not good at matching colors and with this there is no need.

Scrappy - left overs!

You're a scrappy purist, not scrap-happy. Your avatar is beautiful, not a jumble of stuff from the cutting room floor. What you do with scraps takes huge skill and I admire it enormously. I hope someday I will have enough of an eye for color and tone to do it too.
FYI there is not a lot of meat on the knee. A real scrappy quilt would pick a better spot to bite LOL |
I agree with you. That's how those lovely vintage scrap quilts were made :D
|
All my little squares were from different fabrics, I'd gone to a quilting workshop and collected some tiny pieces from everyone.
I really love the scrappy crazy quilt, that is a great way to use up the scraps. |
My scrappy is your scrappy. I save all the fabric shards that aren't big enough to use on their own and "reappropriate" them into scrap quilts. My scraps are really scraps.
I love your avatar, |
I read where scrappy quilts were to be made from whatever fabrics you picked up first. Well, I found out that I had a hard time with that. So I just pick through my scraps and find what I think looks okay,(not necessarily stunning) with whatever it is to be sewn to and go with that. When you get them all together it's fine. So I guess my vote would be for "somewhat controlled scrappy", but definitely from my scrap pile.
